Al Neri: Michael Corleone's Godfather Luca Brasi... 🐟 | The Godfather Explained
Albert Neri, made an UNBELIEVABLE transformation. He went from a law-abiding cop to Underboss of the most powerful family in the country, under Don Michael Corleone, The New Godfather.🌹
But the thing is…
We don't really know much about him.
But what we found out was truly unbelievable.
So Join us as we will finally uncover the truth behind this mysterious character.
Let's begin...
Now, you probably have noticed the constant comparisons between AL Neri and Luca Brasi. And I'm sure you also thought to yourself as well, who is the better enforcer? There are striking similarities between the 2 ruthless men but let's look into it a bit deeper, because it's Not as simple as it might seem. Neri was not your regular enforcer. Unlike Brasi who was huge and mostly intimidating by appearance, Al was more subtle, gentlemanly and even classy. It wasn’t difficult at all for him to blend into the crowd, and even when he was around Michael to protect him, he didn’t draw much notice to himself. While Al was constantly being compared to Luca Brasi, both men possessed substantial differences. By virtue of mannerism and appearance, Luca was a strong, brute man who looked fierce and fearless. In contrast, Al could do both, look like every other well-meaning Sicilian, as well as look extremely intimidating. By the end you'll know The SHOCKING Secret You Never knew about Michael Corleone’s Ruthless Luca Brasi. Neri would want to serve the Corleone family, but directly under Michael Corleone.
Michael was glad to hear this, he insisted however that Neri should go on an all expenses paid vacation down in Miami first, at the family hotel. Giving AL his first taste of luxury.
On his return he was put in Clemenza’s regime, where he was carefully tested and monitored.
But any doubts they might have had quickly vanished as his natural ferocity showed that although he was a cop, he was still as ruthless as any other mob enforcer.Clemenza reported back to Michael that Neri was in fact even better than Luca Brasi. However Clemenza understood that someone like Neri was not a man to be controlled by someone like himself, therefore Neri had a unique position within the family, where he was to report directly to Michael himself, with Hagen as the “buffer”. And that’s when we finally meet him in the film. However Neri’s true power and impact is not truly known. He isn't given enough credit considering how important he was.
At Don Vito Corleone’s funeral, there was this underlying sense of dread and animosity.
There was a lot of pressure on Michael, But also on Neri.
You see, Neri was part of the new Corleone generation, he was part of a new era headed by Michael, so these next few moves were essentially a matter of life or death.

But what came as a surprise was that Neri’s reputation and name was already widespread across New York. Therefore Peter Clemenza had already known of Albert Neri and his story. He was the fiercest cop on the streets, a man to be reckoned with, and soon word would reach the higher ups in the family. Clemenza was renowned for having the ability to scout out incredible talent for the family. And so he brought it to the attention of consigliere Tom Hagen. Soon making its way to the acting don himself, Who then tasked Hagen and Clemenza to look into the case.
Pete remarked to Tom that “Maybe we have another Luca Brasi here”. After Tom studied the case, he too came to the exact same conclusion as Clemenza.
They saw potential in him. They saw a man who was in many ways as strong and fierce as Luca Brasi. A man who was confident enough to take out evil without a second thought. A man with such a devout sense of right and wrong was exactly the kind of person they needed.

I’d like to know what was going through Al Neri’s mind when Michael walks over to Fredo and they embrace at their momma’s wake. It kinda appears to be a look of WTF. I think Al immediately realizes that Michael is just keeping his enemy closer. That’s why Fredo is so at ease in the fishing boat with Al when Al shoots him. Michael does seem to regret it in part 3. It’s a very quick scene.

I was so happy to see Calo take on such an important, trusted role in GF3. I was always kind of concerned he would be lumped in with Fabrizio and killed. If I had to choose an enforcer, it would be Al Neri. As you rightly pointed out, Neri could blend in with a sophisticated crowd and come across as a gentleman; basically, the sort of man you'd encounter at a chamber of commerce banquet. Then your other point comes into play. Neri knows how to become intimidating when necessary and he was ready for brutality if the situation called for it. Neri was an assassin's dagger. Luci Brasi was a battle axe.

I want them BOTH! But if forced to choose, I’ll go with Al Neri. Al has an understanding of sophistication and nuance. HIGHLY intelligent. He’s the opposite of tone-deaf. He’s tone-AWARE. Absolutely loyal and reliable. He knows and understands what he means to Michael. He is to Michael as St. Peter was to Jesus. I had watched GF and GF2 at least 5 times each. Often I would pause and rewind, just to make sure I heard exactly what was said in each scene and who said it. Al Neri quickly became one of 3 my favorite characters, along with Michael and Peter Clemenza. So GF3 is released in 1990 and I saw it in the theatre. Neri betraying the Corleones in favor of Altobelli doesn't make sense. Why would he then whack Archbishop Gilday? Also, i always thought it was Neri that was the Corleones inside contact in finding out where the McCluskey/Sollazo meeting with Michael was going to take place (Louie's in The Bronx). @spencerferrier3857
@spencerferrier3857 11 месяцев назад
Both Luca and Al were exactly what the Don needed at their times to help get the Corleone family's goals met. Luca came in as an enforcer in the late 20s, before the Olive Oil War. For that time of the Roaring 20's & at the height of Prohibition, a big, scary, and ruthlessly capable man like Luca was one big way of how any boss could project power: the spectre of a grim fate at the hands of someone like Luka Brazzi kept people in line. A Mafioso boogeyman, so to speak. (Does that make the Turk like John Wick?🤔😂) But if Luca Brazzi was the cleaved brought down on Vito's enemies, Al Neri was Michael's rapier. Al Neri was, as stated, much more subtle. Much more refined, more precise. Logically speaking, a weapon is a weapon. But not all weapons bear the same weight, nor do they project the same image. That is the key to their difference here. Luca was Luca. He blended in like an elephant in a tea room; not at all. He imposed himself into a situation. Al Neri could be nobody, or the only somebody in the room that concerned you at any given moment. The only thing that determined which you would see was the will of Michael Corleone.

I don’t think there is a right or wrong answer for which enforcer was better. Luca was best during Don Vito’s era for that was what he needed: brute strength and intimidation. Neri is perfect for Don Michael’s era for his mental aptitude and his knowledge in present day weaponry; as a former cop. Regarding Neri’s death, I would like to think that he got the chance to either retire (OR BETTER YET), give his life for the family via taking a bullet for either Michael or Connie in some story we haven’t heard of yet.

Al Neri is my favorite character from the Godfather book. His wife was an idiot for leaving him. As far as the movie, Bright was great as Neri. Seeing him put his old uniform on, the way he plays cop again so convincingly, even the stance he gets into, sweet perfection. Speaking as a woman, the man is gorgeous, as hot as men come. Therefore, he could never be compared with Luca.

I disagree that Al’s wife was an idiot for leaving him. She was understandably afraid of him since he acted like a lunatic and traumatized her. I’m not saying the situation isn’t nuanced, I get why her leaving hurt Al, but to call her an idiot for it is unwarranted. Her father in the book criticized her for leaving Al too through misogynistic means, so that rhetoric shouldn’t be supported. I agree that Al is hot, but that doesn’t excuse his violent behavior and his wife had every right to flee.

Luca was vicious and only needed an excuse to be let loose, he was Loyal but reckless which is what led to his tragic and painful demise. Al is the Epitome of a Snake, sort of like a Black Mamba... He may look harmless, but he'll strike when you least expect it and you couldn't come back from that. Precision always beats sheer Force. Luca is always ready to rumble, Al would be smart enough to wait for his Target's guard to be down before he gets them....... I'd choose Al on pure Logic. I'd need someone that can be easily overlooked until it's too late.

To me, the third biggest problem in Part 3 (after Sofia Coppola and Michael not acting like the Michael we knew) was Neri. He simply did not seem anything like the character we knew in the first two films. If Part 3 was the first one that someone watched, they'd have a hard time understanding why he was considered to be scary.

Both endings of Al Neri were too schlokey and pulp novelish. A sophisticated, curious ending would be a quick, unexpected natural death such as from a stroke, while doing a mundane assignment for Vincent. Vincent could make a comment, "A loyal warrior, surviving the best of our families enemies, and only Mother Nature could vanquish him." The contrast of a natural death vs a violent death. BTW: Neri would never betray his 'family' totally out of character.

So many great moments in these films. But one I like that a lot of people overlook. Is when connie begs micheal to forgive fredo at their mothers funeral. He goes over to him and they share the hug. It for a second seems sincere then he looks up over to neri. And nothing but a look says Im doing this but its only for show. We are taking him out. And Neri gets it. No words needed. He basically gives him the order with just a look. You shouldve included that in the video.

Ridiculously critical drop CM..you hit on all cylinders here..but then again I knew you would. As far as choice for top enforcer..Al Neri hands down. Luca was like a big rumbling brutish, unrefined tank, dangerous and effective but quite obvious to see. Neri was like a fine tuned Ferrari, sleek, fast, very dangerous, but not easy to see coming until it passed you..but then, it was too late. Al Neri was no doubt the next evolution of Luca Brazi in a much more refined form to better represent the concomitant evolution of the Corleone family.
