It's funny, because Pacino, Caan and Sheen are the same age, but Al was just boyish, just innocent-looking enough to make Michael's transformation in Part One seem truly insidious.
That would have made a good scene for the movie. Sonny ribbing Michael about being a war hero while wearing his too small uniform and acting all stiff like Michael. Out of place, but funny.
I thought sonny was great, loved James Caan in the role and thought it really stupid that they killed him off so early in the film...he's a brilliant actor
And in "Scarface" you can see that he acts with his whole body. As for talking with his eyes, you can definitely see that in the restaurant scene just before he pulls the gun out and kills Sollozzo and McCluskey.
Not many women liked the godfather when it first came out, or even later on. I think had it come out today, women would finally get it. I being 13 when the movie came to theaters remember for years after that, not one woman of color ever mentioned how god looking Pacino was....for years and years after he was acting in many other pics after GF1. My suspision today is that with the female black show hosts they now have today, and more media coverage, they would make Michael into a black womans dream. I still at 55 am amazed I STILL never heard a black woman ever talk about Pacino. What was he invisible to black women. Yes I know, black women generally go for the muscular slap em around type. But michael? How could you not love him as ANY color woman?
Marc Vince Are you kidding?? The only issue I have with The Godfather is I don't know if 1 or 2 is my favorite movie of all time. I constantly quote it driving my husband insane. Now Godfather 3 I could have done without. Well except that last scene where Michael's daughter gets whacked. Pacino was brilliant in that scene. The man is a god.
Mark Schirripa No offense dude but Godfather 3 was released in 1990. If you haven't seen it yet chances are you aren't chomping at the bit to see it. It's been 25 years. The cat's out of the bag.
@@jedisquidward I dont think he aged too well he looks so different now, more different than other people when they were young compared to when they are old.
Its a shame he didn't win an oscar for 1 or 2. As great as Brando and De Niro were, Al Pacino stole the show both times for me, and I don't say that lightly. I think his performance in 2 is one of the greatest movie performances ever.
she was acting though. a lot of the visible infatuation would've been deliberately, though you're right that it still would've likely have come from a genuine place
D. Dios yes they did .. he was so gorgeous back then and she was cute.. they made a nice looking couple..he looked better than warren Beatty in my opinion of course ..
They were dating off and on for 20 years or something, she wanted to marry Al and it seems he got scared but kinda looks like they both messed up. So Im pretty sure that she had at least a terrible crush on him while they were recording this.
She wasn't the editor's wife. She /was/ the editor. Marcia Lucas (George Lucas' wife) worked on multiple Scorsese films in the 70s before she edited Star Wars and won an Oscar for it.
All the other actors were charismatic but Al made a good Michael BECAUSE he was understated. He was quiet, dark and thoughtful and I think the audience could identify with him because in many ways, he was an outsider to mob life.
Just like so many other actors and roles they portrayed, there is no Godfather without Pacino as Michael Corleone. Perfect casting all around and an all-time classic movie.
This is why the Director (Not some idiot Studio Exec) is the ultimate judge of who should play what role. In this case Al Pacino was the prefect Micheal Corleone.
one of the reasons godffather 1 was the best film of the 3 was al pacino`s transformation from fresh eyed army hero to cold, calculating don. in the other godfathers he remained the cold hearted chilling leader all through....and, of course, godfather 1 had brando at his best.
his young voice is very strange, it sounds weak. Yet his movies godfather on its so strong, possessive almost. you can see Pacino is the best easily: Caan is too cocky, Sheen is overly downbeat and trodden. Pacino is still this wide eyed, innocent kid, yet he has this surmounting rage within him. it makes it interesting to see what will happen to him and his fall even greater
Wow. I dont believe what I just saw. Michael in the auditions, looked like a high school kid. Even his voice was almost childish. If you told me he was 17 in that audition, I wouldnt think twice. But then when they showed the real shooting outside instead of inside...its like he "morphed" into something else. This is inspiring to me. Do all of us have that thing in us that can just come out at the right time? Also, I am doubly shocked that Diane Keaton was in side at the table the best actor out of the bunch. To me she was better inside at the table than in the real scene. I love the way James Caan said and few outide of NY would really get this "They spent $400,000 to do the testing, and wound up with 4 corned beef sandwiches." He is a guy that while not as great as Pacino, I never understood why he didnt make a lot more gangster pics or even just pics over the years.
man he does even coppola joked about him being ladies man back then and how diane keaton picked al despite screentesting with hundreds of actors lmao. well you cant resist those eyes.
Turbo9987 It’s sad though she gets compared negatively to Simonetta who played Appoloni. Both ladies were lovely in their own ways. One was sweet, charming, waif type & the other an Italian hottie..
Or...is Michael the perfect Pacino? lol Because Michael could play or be an actor, the real Al Pacino could never be a killer. He's very sensitive in real life.
Marc Vince Michael Corleone was sensitive too. My interpretation of his character in the novel and films was that he changed as he took the actions that he believed circumstances compelled.
Al Pacino knows how to make the idea he sees in his head of who the character is come out of his eyes, hands, face, body, voice. He is a consummate actor. And Diane Keaton has the same gift. Which is the reason they were perfect together. They both are very old spirits.
He's an angel. His face, I couldn't believe a face like that existed. I used to imagine that one day everything went back and Al is the only person in the world to ever go back to being young and I am the happiest 17 year old girl ever.
Seeing his audition, he really was very awkward and I can see why they thought he wasn't right for the part. Thankfully he seemed to get a feel for the part somewhere between his audition and the actual filming and nailed it when it came to actually filming.
They hated him even before he did those tests, they straight up hated the casting choice, 'cause he was short and not a big star. He went to those trials knowing he was unwanted and so had an attitude of something like "fuck this shit they'll hate me anyway". And yeah, it shows in these trials.
He was the most handsome actor of 70's.He should have made commercials at that stage of his life.Hollywood has been unfair to him.Who are these 3 people who have disliked this video?
I'm glad that they chose Al to play Michael, which turned out to be an absolutely right decision. I cannot think of any other actors who would play this character. Al Pacino is one of a kind.
You can see by the look of Diane's eyes, looking at Pacino's eyes and lips back and forth, her smiling and overall behavior that she had quite a huge crush on him, at least.
The first time watching this and you could see that Diane Keaton and Al Pacino had chemistry. This accommodated the acting and the characters they were playing. Great actors working together. Thank goodness Al played Michael.
It’s so interesting how cast chemistry can radically alter a scene. Young Pacino as Michael with Diane Keaton as Kay is a tender, youthful love. Caan as Michael? Just his presence alone in the scene and suddenly you feel yourself fear for Kay’s safety.
He's the most adorable actor ever for me and even now that's he has aged, my outlook for him will never ever change. He was once an adorable man therefore he'll always be handsome ♥
Thank you Francis for fighting for Al. Because of that we have one of the greatest performances in a movie ever in Godfather 2. He should´ve won an Oscar for that.
What the heck? Martin is the great actor (btw so is Carrey) and he would easily give the justice to the part of Michael. He was just less desperate and less lucky in his career. Al did better choices, got more chances to show his talent and took it all. Seems fair to me.
Look whenever I read that book I always envisioned a dark and good looking, quiet and cautious " little brother " type. Remember at one point in the novel, Vito was a little bit worried about the masculinity of his youngest boy. Pacino IS Mike. We're talking Sicilians here, not Milan or Turin.
So...James Caan goes no Sicilian can refuse a request on his daughter's wedding day....and Diane says "oh good!" with this freaked out expression LOL.... It just looks like Sonny and Kay are talking... and not Michael
"il padrino" credo che sia il film più bello di sempre ... poi amo AL PACINO😍, è bellissimo anche ora all'età di 74 anni lo amoooooo TI AMO AL 💖💖💖😢😢😢😍💋💋
robert redford ! thank fuck he didnt get the part would have spoiled a masterpiece and pacinos career might not have kicked of thank you coppola for your tenacity
I just cry whenever i see some scene with michael and fredo laughing together. that's the main reason i love this saga as a masterpiece...the way power and burden completely corrupts Michael is just visceral
You brought something up that I never thought of since I saw the movie 42 yrs ago in the theaters. I say, if he didnt whack Fredo, the movie would have been even better. Think....did one person in 40 years ever go...."yeah! wasnt that great the way he kiled his own brother. I think that was the worst part of the film. They should have had him do something else evil to show him changing as a human being. That was too over the top. Wow, 42 yrs since I saw that and I never thought they should have left that out.Plus the fact that they had him standing right there in the boathouse while it was done, thats totally rediculous, science fiction even. Bad mistake francis. But I guess thats why no movie no matter how much genius is put into it,ever gets it all right.
@@MarcV8888 lol what a dumb comment. 'michael killing redo was *rediculous* , science fiction even'. thank god you're not a film critic (or in any position that requires critical thinking, hopefully). overall though he killed Fredo because his mother died. He swore to keep Fredo alive whilst their mother was alive so she didn't have to suffer another son dying, but once the mother died then Michael killed Fredo. It made sense too. Fredo was a risk to the family's reputation (because don't forget Michael's irrational hunger for power was a big part of what changed him from the end of Godfather 1 to Godfather 2. Godfather 2 was when he went from being in an immoral position to being completely soulless). And Fredo was also a risk to his family's health too. After already helping people put out a hit on Michael and after betraying the family multiple times, it made sense now that Michael had his own family and would be growing older that he wouldn't be able to keep a threat like that so close and let down his guard with someone like fredo around. Fredo had to die.
Apart from in the third one. As she aged she resembled less of what I imagined an older Kay would be like visually & personality-wise, and it didn't help that her and Al weren't getting along for the third film. But I agree she was one of the unsung heroes of the first two.
@@KaizerBeatz-vf9wf The Kay character didn't even belong in Part 3, not at all. Not after the way Michael closed the door in her face in Part 2. *That* was final.
Someone at the end (I like it's Francis Ford) says "...get inside Al's head...(attempting to correct) Michael's..character" It should be the other way around. Al plays Michael so well that even the director mixes it up and just believes that Al is Michael.
Godfather , Carlitos way, Scarface, Heat, ofcourse all the others are greatttt movies. Gotta give it to Deniro he is equally a legend of his own work. Love them both as actors.
