In three decades as a DJ, record producer, composer, session player, music director, recording artist, engineer, and studio owner/designer, Stephen Webber has always strived to keep things fresh. He has performed with artists ranging from hip-hop pioneer Grandmixer DXT to bluegrass legend Earl Scruggs.
Webber authored the first book to approach the turntable as a musical instrument, and designed the country's first college-level curriculum on turntablism at Berklee College of Music, where he's welcomed Grandmaster Flash, Grand Wizzard Theodore, Chuck D, Roc Raida, Fab Five Freddie, DJ Swamp, and DJ Shadow as visiting artists.
His cutting, scratching, and beat manipulations can be heard on numerous records and soundtracks, including two large-scale sample libraries for Big Fish Audio, Hip-Hop City, and Acid Jazz City. His six-volume Vital Vinyl series of tools for DJs have been used by thousands of DJs, including DJ Logic and the Yohimbe Brothers.
Webber has been featured on NBC's Today Show, CBS Sunday Morning, NPR's All Things Considered, CNN Live, and the Mitch Albom Show, and has appeared in the New York Times, DJ Times, Rolling Stone, Source, XLR, and DJ Pro magazines. He has performed and presented workshops across the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Australia.
An Emmy Award-winning composer, Webber's Stylus Symphony premiered to a standing ovation at the Berklee Performance Center in November 2007. Webber received his bachelor of music in jazz studies from the University of North Texas, and his master of music in guitar performance. He has written for Mix Magazine, Electronic Musician, Remix, Audio Media, and Pro Sound News, and is the author of the new book DJ Skills: The Ultimate Guide to Mixing and Scratching on Focal Press.
