Hey there fellow travelers! Greetings from the beautiful state of Alabama. Today we have what tourists should and should not do when they visit Alabama. From not missing out on some of the most important civil rights sights in the US to the beaches of Gulf Shores to having fun at Space Camp there is a lot to do and not do when you visit Alabama.
Let's not forget the important part of picking your Alabama football team, either the Crimson Tide of the University of Alabama or the Auburn Tigers.

Seriously though, you are right about the manners. Even at Auburn where a bunch of college students are rushing trying to get to class, you hold the door and you check behind you to hold it for the next person and don’t let go until you pass it off. You do NOT drop the door on someone’s butt, no matter what age they are. 😂 And THANK YOU for reminding people to check their elitist attitudes towards Southerners at the state line. We get it enough from the media and Hollywood and believe me, even if we’re too polite to say it to your face, don’t bring that attitude here in person. If your idea of “fun” is fun at our expense, stay home.

The problem I have with "southern manners" is that it was created and is a hold over from the lessons african slaves had to learn about their white masters. Be kind, be respectful or be dead a saying goes. This was also a result of the placating "southern gentlemen" swindling northerners out of their money if they happen to travel in the south. You here, Yesa Mr. Mark, nosa Mr. Mark to this day and it isn't respect because it is deserved it is respect because it was beaten into the psyche of black people for over four hundred years.

In Northeast Alabama, you have Noccalula Falls in Gadsden. A little further north on I-59, you have Cherokee Rock Village, if you like to do rock climbing and hiking thru large monolithic rocks. Further NE, you have Ft Payne, Al. Home of the famous southern band, Alabama. They have a museum dedicated to the band. Just outside Ft Payne is Little River Canyon. Beautiful waterfall, and when winter and spring rains come, you might find kayakers taking a dive over the falls while it's heavily flooded. Lovely nature drive around the park, and plenty more hiking. Last stop on I-59 in Alabama is the beautiful town of Mentone. It features a weekend market with all kinds of home crafts and other neat things. Desoto Falls and Desoto Park is nearby. There is a church in Mentone built into a rock. Mentone is also on the trail of the World's Longest Yard Sale. If you want good BBQ, go to Henagar, Al, and treat yourself to Bama Boys BBQ. Great BBQ, and their mac n cheese is amazing! I moved to NE Bama in 2019, and still discovering wonderful places to visit.

Born and raised in Gadsden, Al. Moved to Orlando 3 days after I graduated high school to work before I left for college in Carbondale, IL. Joined the Navy and went around the world....twice. I've lived in 12 different states and after all that, I moved back in 2003. Left and then came back in 2008. I can honestly say that Alabama is far from what it once was. It's been said, that when visiting here, racism wasn't an issue and people actually got along. Steve Harvey said that he didn't experience any kind of prejudice from anyone here and that we just talk different. He said he couldn't believe that when he went up back up north, he noticed how much racism was an issue. We do have some "not so great" people who have taken advantage of their political positions and we still have those who are out for themselves and a standing member of the "good ol boy" fraternity but we are close to pushing them out of office. Those that claim we're a bunch of uneducated, slow, redneck idiots haven't heard that Huntsville, Al. population has highest number of people with an above average IQ. We do have the University of Alabama football fans that dumb down our stats. Those are the sister kissing, cousin marrying, crayon eating, mentally challenged people that should be avoided at all costs. They do not discriminate whenever they become sexually excited . The "Welccome to Tuscaloosa" sign says, "Where men are men and sheep are scared!" Auburn is the best choice. Auburn has been the creator of many other colleges traditions on game day. We have the best pre game tradition of all other football teams ( that includes NCAA,NFL,USFL, High Scool, CFL ...). Just search Auburn Tigers Eagle flight. We started what we call "the tiger walk" where the players walk to the stadium with hyped fans lined up on either side. Our fight song is awesome, our school creed is even better, and wherever we see an Auburn logo on anyone, anywhere in the world, we say "War Eagle!" and it's always repeated back because we are family. Oh, and Aubie, our schools mascot, has been voted the top mascot in the NCAA more than any other. Hope this helps.

As a resident of Alabama, we call July and August “wear your air” season. Walk out the door, do nothing, still get instant sweat. Also, if you visit in winter, bring tank tops and heavy winter apparel. Because we can have 80 degrees and tornadoes in the same week as an ice storm.

Couple of adds: Don't pass up the German food in Huntsville. The pecan crusted chicken schnitzel at Ol' Heidelberg is fantastic (we drive the two hours from our place just to eat there). And don't be afraid to were your Orange (Go Vols) proudly - just keep your mouth closed. And on the interstates, don't drive in the fast lane unless passing as you will (well may) get a ticket. They're funny about that for some reason.

If you turn down Tupelo Pike there (Route 21) and drive for about 8 minutes, you’ll see an old-fashioned country store just ahead called Pikeville Deli. Native Alabamian here. Yeah, it gets warm here in Alabama in July and August (and also most of June and the first half of September). But, c'mon, it's not THAT bad. Stay out of the sun, wear light weight and light colored clothes, keep the air circulating around you, and you'll do just fine. Air conditioning is now ubiquitous even in the small towns, so things are not quite as laid-back in the summer as they were in the summer months back in the 1950s and '60s. One of my childhood memories (which I was too dumb to appreciate at the time) was the front porch that most houses had. Neighbors would come over, or we'd visit, and sit on the porch with a floor fan blowing, while talking up a storm. Air conditioning, and houses designed for air conditioning, has fairly much done away with that.

@taberm2000

@@omfghaxpixel8091 No more poverty here than anywhere else. The difference is, we don't treat people differently just because they are not as financially advantaged. The philosophy is that manners are the same no matter who you are interacting with. We get a bad rap because incomes are not as high here as in some areas. But here, even poor people own homes and feed their families. They need to find a way of balancing income with affordability before they claim that there is a high poverty rate.
