Alan Ritchson (Reacher, Blue Mountain State) joins us again this week for an open an honest conversation about his current mental health coinciding with the industry validation and massive success of Reacher. Before Alan gets into the idea that he is more than just his work and his role on screen, he discusses the importance of focusing on now and showing yourself compassion - in relation to the difficult physique transformation he’s had to adopt. We also get into the pros and cons of his mania, our ability to connect through pain, and the pivots he’s had to make heading into Reacher Season 2.

The army recommends 160-170lbs as ideal weight for their demands (combat, fighting, running etc.) so for Alan to be doing similar movements/training for the role of Reacher at 240lbs is just astonishing, must really take its tole!
@DwightKSchrute3
@DwightKSchrute3 5 месяцев назад
As someone who is in that weight range I can tell you that really is not ideal. I would say for Infantry or any combat role, it would be way better to be heavier with all the gear you have to carry. I felt like a Turtle just with my plate carrier and plates. Slowed my mobility way down.
@alexandermacneil4430
@alexandermacneil4430 5 месяцев назад
That's Hollywood for you. Embellish everything! Most special forces men are not these physically jacked specimens but are closer to 180 lbs. They are fit dudes but they aren't usually shredded bodybuilders.
@manumaster1990
@manumaster1990 5 месяцев назад
@@DwightKSchrute3 This answer is ridiculous and makes no sense: It doesn't matter if you weigh that much or not if the percentage of that weight is made up of excess fat and little muscle mass! furthermore that figure must be related based on the height of the subject in question. For a person of average height (man) 160 lbs is ideal if he has no more fat than muscle. Because for every additional pound of weight, whether muscle or fat, efficiency and functionality is reduced. The heart and lungs and subsequently the joints suffer greatly from excess weight.
@DwightKSchrute3
@DwightKSchrute3 5 месяцев назад
Well I hope your having a good day too. You took what I said a little too far. To be fair I did not really explain or go into detail on what I was trying to get across in the comment. I was simply trying to say that Mass moves mass. When you have a Plate carrier and plates on someone who is heavier is going to be able to handle that weight much better. That is all I meant to say. I was not really referring to anything regarding stress on joints or anything else. Yes other things come into play other than just simply weight. Sorry for the miss understanding. I was not really disagreeing with him. Just simply I noticed during my time that Heavier set guys could handle the weight much better in my experience. Have a good day. @@manumaster1990

Great interview. Great shows, both Inside You and Reacher. I don't know if you ever read these comments Michael (I hope you do.), because ears perked up when he talked about running sprints and getting winded so easily. The first thought that came to mind was how he was breathing. Also because of his comment about never feeling like he's got enough lung capacity. He might want to check the book Breath, by Jeff Nestor. It's been a life changer for me and the clients I work with. Most people breath through their mouths. Especially when doing something physically taxing like sprinting. We were actually designed to breathe through our noses most of the time. Even when sprinting. When we do, we use our diaphragm to breath, opening up our ribcage and bringing air down into the bottom of our lungs. Two-thirds of the oxygen exchange happens in the lower third of our lungs. When you breathe through your mouth your upper chest is expanding and your shoulders are rising. So, you don't get the air to the bottom of your lungs like you need to. Granted with an activity like sprinting or any short-term high intensity exercise, it is more important to breath through your nose during recovery. It's also important to try and breath through your nose as long as possible through your nose during the activity. I recommend the book to anyone. It can make a dramatic impact on your health, and physical capacity.

Dunno if he addressed this, but I do wish these Hollywood types like the Rock would stop blowing smoke up peoples ass. Nothing wrong with juice when you're not a professional athlete, but there is something wrong when 12 year old kids look at the Rock, and think "bruh he's natty, I can do that". I gotta give props to this dude! As an athlete, the majority of my life playing football up to my 2nd year in the ncaa college football world, I understand what it's like. Although it wasn't prepped for a role in a series or movie, it was definitely a career consistently! From giving up doing normal everyday lifestyle things with myself, friends and family to focus on training, nutrition, workouts and health issues. At 6,3 245lbs consistently as a pass rusher, I had to not only maintain my strength and weight but maintain my speed and explosiveness simultaneously and it sucked lol! After college, I focused on bodybuilding and there I found myself reaching a 264lb physic and the strongest I'd ever been but with substantial physical recessions! I couldn't sleep well and certain body limbs went to sleep and ached more often than not. I got winded extremely easy and keeping my cholesterol and BP normal was equally as hard as the training. So, at 39 now, I continue to train and do my usual cardio but I refuse to gorge myself everyday and neglect a normal lifestyle and I absolutely love it!! I eat clean but I eat what I want especially on the weekends and events. I have some drinks with my friends and family now and instead of dedicating the majority of my life to the gym, I spend about 2 hours a day 5 days a week lifting and cardio in that time frame. My physic isn't as unnatural or intimidating as it has been most of my life but I'm maintaining a 230lb, 14% body fat dad bod very easily lol! I've learnt to enjoy life everyday, especially with friends and family and if can gain a few pounds, I can always lose a few pounds afterwards.

You're to be commended for staying physically fit. But you might find it harder to just shed a few pounds as you age. In my 30s I could yo-yo a bit based on exercise availability and situational diet (e.g. deployment food versus wife's cooking, etc.) . Now that I'm 66, my energy level is lower, despite regular Pickleball and weight seems to stick, which evolutionarily is a good thing to keep seniors alive should the village food supply run down. Just saying thanks to Alan for everything you've done for your viewers. Keep up the good work, fulfill your purpose, and take breaks. And your hard work really paid off. Thanks to Michael, too, for the interviews. They are more insightful and engaging than the majority. And I woke up in the middle of the night, for no discernible reason, just to face the toxicity that is the comments. "He's juiced." "He's lying." So what? He already admitted it, and told of the circumstances. And I can't believe I'm saying the obvious, but anabolic hormones themselves don't build muscle. They tell the body to build more. One still needs nutrition and discipline. So saying that he's juiced has little weight, and contributes to the toxicity. But I guess people have to scrape the bottom for the sake of being jerks, which is why Jack Reacher is such a cathartic character. Lastly, I wish there were a Vin Diesel scene saying "what would Alan Ritchson do?"

I can attest to the issue of having your body used to a certain caloric intake. I'm 6'2, was my best shape around 230, though felt better at 240 as I didn't mind a bit of fat on me. I injured my left ankle severely and was unable to walk without crutches for 8 weeks. My caloric intake didn't change and I ballooned to 280 before I was able to work out again. Maximizing your aerobic workouts helps with feeding O2 to your muscle mass...

Air is mostly nitrogen, not O2 😂 Anyway, your caloric expenditure decreased because you weren’t walking around as much due to the crutches. Your NEAT (non exercise activity thermogenesis) decreased, but your incoming calories stayed the same. That’s why you put on weight. It had zero to do with your muscles somehow being starved of oxygen 🤦‍♂️. Whoever told you that needs a dry slap 👋 😂. Hope your ankle is ok mate. Do you use floss bands? They can be great for increasing bloodflow into that area. Just wrap your ankle up, and they create resistance so that when you perform circles with your foot, blood gets pumped into that area. Take a band off after about a minute and your ankle should feel better (depending on what stage of recovery you’re at)

It is recommended you slowly lower your daily caloric intake over time. For example, if your daily caloric intake is 3,000 calories. Try bumping it down to 2,900 calories for a couple weeks or so. Then lower it to 2,800 for another few weeks. Slow and steady. The body does NOT like drastic change.

@@roryt1983he's actually totally correct. It's by definition that you don't need a surplus. You only need one if you need to gain weight. If you want to maintain it would actually be detrimental to consume at a surplus. Also, there are numerous studies out there confirming that you need roughly a third of the volume to maintain what you have.
@roryt1983
@roryt1983 5 месяцев назад
@@tonypaella you are also incorrect. To maintain the physique Alan has, he needs to remain in a surplus. This is not about maintaining muscle tissue, it is about maintaining a weight on the scales. Alan looks great but his body fat % is not low. You can see in reacher his arms, neck, face are not ‘lean’, he carries more fat and water than a typical athlete. Christian Bale did the same for Batman, got big but wasn’t lean (don’t mistake this with me calling either of them fat - they both looked great imo). So yeah, to maintain this physique he needs to remain in a calorie surplus, if he didn’t he’d lean out and although he’d have more muscle definition he’d look less imposing. Let’s not forget the character doesn’t hit the gym, he’s meant to portray a genetic 1% who’s just naturally big like a bear not a shredded bodybuilder with veins everywhere.
@tonypaella
@tonypaella 5 месяцев назад
@@roryt1983 A surplus by definition means you consume more than you expend which means you gain weight. In order to maintain you costume as many calories as you expend, making it no longer a surplus. In the novels, Reacher never works out but has done a lot of manual labor to support himself. He explains his physique as "genetics". His weight varies in the novels, though I can't remember enough to cite which one. He mentions once that he had been at about 220-225 and his top weight had been 245.
