Alan Whicker reports on the contention over plans to extend the ferry service between the Isle of Skye and the mainland to Sunday, still strictly observed as the Sabbath. First broadcast in 1964.
Alan Whickers brilliant question: do you read a paper on a Monday? No fancy tricks, good questions that everyone could make their own minds up about the answer given. A great presenter.
Home! Grew up in Kyle and live a couple of miles outside it now. Used to love going on the ferry in the 80s and 90s as a kid. I remember the massive queues in the summer and I’m glad we have a bridge now.
Where I’m from that day’s paper was printed after 12:00am, which would make it that day’s news. I’m also old enough to remember that Monday’s paper was rather skimpy in size. 🌿
Crikey! ........ one forgets just how parochial those old time Bible Thumpers were back in those days. The Portree publican nailed the argument perfectly by simply regarding the ferry service (quite rightly) as an extension of the roads, and did the Clergy expect the roads to be shut down on a Sunday? The remains of the old ferry ramp were still there at Castle Moil when I was last on Skye in 2009... Good pub and B&B at the McKinnon, owned and operated by a great bloke called Iain.
This lot of Wee Frees, kept Scotland back for ages. Although now there are too many going to Skye and buying property in Skye. So maybe the wee Frees were right after all.
Clergy concerned for the soul of their flock?! They weren’t so fussy about their flock fighting and killing fellow Christians during two world wars..in fact, they used to pray for victory and bless the rifles of those sent to kill.
What would you have done in the circumstances? Perhaps you would have endeavoured to persuade Herr Hitler not to invade Czechoslovakia or Poland or Belgium because it wasn't "the done thing." Do you really mean to be taken seriously with such a trite, insencere, throw-away line? Perhaps of course you had also a masterplan to immediately halt the agression of the Austro-Hungarian Empire towards Serbia. Perhaps you could also have forestalled any plan by Britain to defend Belgium when it was attacked by Germany, the ally of Austria-Hungary, who would inevitably go on to attack France and if not defeated would leave them in control of Western Europe. And where were your people when this was taking place? My grandfather's two brothers died in WW1 but I don't hold the clergy responsible but rather the Kaiser and the Emperor Franz Joseph I who were absolute rulers in a way that neither King George V nor any clergy were.
@@UISTMAN59 Quite right Sir & yet again Alan Whicker at his very best. I remember years ago the Archbishop of Canterbury being reminded that he had once been Major Robert "Butcher" Runcie MC-a tank Commander.
Shame none of these "brave" reporters can never show the hypocrisy in judaism, and all the racial supremacist teachings. But then they wouldn't. Too afraid of being called anti-semites. Whicker was a wanker who chose easy targets.
Haha Skye bridge fucked on 'em all! This old boy will be brown bread by now, but if he had respected the sabbath, then Saturday was the Sabbath; not Sunday!
