Alanis totally nailed the depth of emotion and utter devastation a person could feel when they are so totally in love with someone and are hit with the reality that the love is not reciprocated by the object of their affection! What a performance!!🎭
The word "wasn't" is where her unbridled joy was reduced to the thorns and thistles of heartbreak and betrayal. Haven't heard many other vocalists who can command such emotional impact. She totally changed the feel of the song in one word.
I remember the first time I saw this performance back in 96. All I remember was getting chills. The power and emotion in her vocal was unmatched. I became a fan in that very moment. I made my mom take me to go buy her album (back then there was no streaming lol). I am still taken aback by how astounding her voice is here.
Back in 1996 I played JLP over and over again. I loved Alanis and got so much enjoyment listening to her amazing record. She is three years younger than me and I marveled then and now at how talented and how beautiful her voice was/is. I loved this performance by her at the MTV awards that year!! Stunning . . .
I played her tape...(yeah, I had a tape player, she's from the 90s people) over and over, just turning it over to play each side, or rewind if that's what I felt like doing. One day I walk out the room and the tape kept playing... this song appeared out of no where... WHAT THE F.... OMG.. I LOVE THIS SONG. Played it over and over, so glad I found her again. So glad I walked out the room. Imagine the people who didn't know it's hidden... So sad for them.
Just found this again. Vocals... WOW!! Never gets old. Can't find vocals like this anymore since Amy Winehouse passed. Artists like these are a dieing breed. Thanks to the tiny pop music. And people wonder y I listen to music from the 90's and the early 2000's.
I agree with Justin as well. Remove the guitar and let her do that moment alone. Anyone who’s been through the terror of a broken heart to the magnitude of which she’s describing knows you go through it alone. Her a cappella version does the emotion of moment perfect justice due to the fact that she is doing it alone and completely exposed. Remove the guitar and leave it the way it was.
This song really fits alanis during this time.. Coming off "Oughta know" then this.. She really sounded like a psycho ex gf that will just stab your current girl drug your drink kidnap you..
Interesting projection. Your post paints you as one of those pathologically entitled, empathy-deficient, irreparably-broken males who call borderline females "psychos" because he lacks the most basic knowledge and education that psychopaths are incapable of feeling jealous...or any manner of emotional attachment...or love...or fear...because they're physiologically incapable of processing oxytocin, and almost entirely driven by ruthless greed. So, god help you if you ever possess the kind of wealth that attracts the attention of an actual female psychopath because if you do, she won't bother stabbing your "current girl" or drugging your drink, and when she DOES decide to off you for your wealth and/or insurance money she'll do it in such an icily calm, emotionless manner that you'll not only never anticipate it, you'll never see it coming until it's too late. Same is true for male psychopaths...charming AF...zero jealousy...all about draining your bank account dry and tossing your lifeless carcass aside as they move onto the next victim they bleed dry.
I thought it was incredibly ballsy to sing this song at the event (it was a bonus on the album, without band). It bothers me that she couldn't keep the rythm though. I still keep coming back to ninetees for songs lol, if the rhythm was right here it would be a gem for me. 90's the last era when you could actually hear a tune in most of the songs, and hum along. Too much of studio wizardry in music now for my taste but oh well, it's just business.
Then again when a year earlier she was pretty much unheard of and by this point she was (temporarily) the biggest star on the planet it must take some adaption. Let alone getting into the fact this is autobiographical rather than just singing someone elses words, and that must have influence.
such a beautiful rendition too bad everything is so politicized now tho i dont know and dont care but it wouldnt surprise me one bit if morissette has tds
She's so greedy and controlling in this song lyrics! The young man is trying to be gracious, giving and to share the gifts that the gods gave him with others!
