Once upon a time, I was a very young, strong buck with dreams of moving to Alaska and building a cabin. Thank you for showing us this part of your life.
Your welcome Robert. Maybe one day I will do a "tour" video of the places Ive built in Alaska. Its a great state to build anything in, as the weather is mild in the summer and there are loads of places for construction materials.
I bought 2.3 acres and am so doing a stockade style cabin. I’m pretty new to this kind stuff so your videos have been a godsend! Thank you for sharing your journey! I love your channel!
I used to frame custom homes for a living, one of the most satisfying and enjoyable things I've done, I can't even imagine the satisfaction from building your own cabin, she's coming along so sweet! Thanks dave
I've only heard him not say his ending 1 time. That was when he was dealing with his destroyed tent....he looked so defeated 😔 but he fixed everything!!! Very proud moment Dave...for sure😊
Dude you are clear concise...all the information needed is there perfectly explained i watched a few videos before i came across this one. Why can't everyone have your teaching skills?...Instead of assuming were all natural born builders?? Keep up the good work my brother.
Making progress! Like your system for one man operation...you got it down! Looks like the weather was nice while you were building the truss's. And hey...That's a mighty sharp shirt you got on there! Thanks for sharing!
I am grateful that you take the time to video this project. I'm learning as well as having the feeling that I am doing that work, well you know, I substitute me for you! My body is old and tired and so you are providing me with the opportunity to build a cabin that I cannot do. So thanks. I'll continue looking for updates.
Sage One, Isn't amazing the mind doesn't get old and thinks like the body can still do it ! But then reality its you :-( Old disable combat vet, hit old before my time . Thanks to my Gov't that sprayed me with agent orange one evening in the jungle of Viet Nam and 50 yrs later is still giving, new problems. This is my escape through Dave Whipple also. Such a soothing voice to listen to. He helps sooth the anger that still oozes through, from time to time.
Love your videos Dave. I live in Pickford, mi... started watching your buildings go up and love em.. Hope to watch more. Put a 12x26 cabin in myself and enjoyed every minute. I am putting an rv shower in as i have a 12 v. pump system. Looking forward to your next video. I am 70 yrs young, n on disability from the army (va). but am still mobile,,, have a great 4th... Tom n Rocky
I'm building a 16'x16' traditional framing cabin. About to start the roof. Was planning on using a king post with a ridge beam and 2x6 rafters. The slope is 12 on 12. Questions for you... 1. You recommend 16" or 24" cents on the rafters? 2. Your way of installing the rafters or my way, Is one better over the other? Yours looks so much easier!
I am New To Your Channel,,Never Built A Log Cabin,, Live In South Carolina,,First Married A woman From Michigan,, But Do Work By And For My Self....But Interesting,, You Make All The Grunts I Do !!! I Feel Your Pain Brother..And I Too Live Off The Grid,,But Only A Mile From Home !! LOL
Thanks for the update Dave, coming right along. Oh, and don't forget to pack a can of Rislone (Bar's Leaks) Head Gasket Fix for that trip back to Michigan eh :-)
I already am back in MI. Had to come back super early this year.......and BTW I just blew out the old radiator 1/2 hour ago while yard-sale'n. Ill have to order another on today.
You need a tool belt and a good helper, and that will speed it up. Decades ago I used to work alone just like you, everything by myself, hard worker like you will be great reward.
I have a tool belt, but I just nor wear it much. I clip my tape on my back pocket and usually have a nail bag on the other side. Speed square in my back pocket, and a hammer loop on my belt. I do like to work alone...For years I ran a concrete construction business and I poured LOTS of concrete with myself and one other guy. I like small crews.
Hi Dave, it sure does look like a lot of fun bud! I was curious how you planned to set the rafters in place, cool idea. Oh, I keep forgetting to mention that I live in Michigan too, Sanford, so here's an early "Welcome Back". Anyway, I'm looking forward to more videos, Rock On!
Oh , the "eh" thing has been with me for a long time. I lived a year in the upper peninsula of Michigan where there are lots of Finns and Swedes and the word "eh" finishes every sentence. I used to get asked a lot ( in Alaska) if I was Canadian because of it.
It's looking good! Who needs a gym when you can just build a house by yourself. Haha! I know that's some hard work brother. It's gonna look amazing when you're finished!
Couldn't imagine building a cabin by myself, but its comming along great. Im from michigan also, house is down state in garden city and cottage is central mich in hale.
Hi Dave, what’s with not having a ridge beam at the peak? I’m working on building my own Cabin in Michigan and am wondering what the pros and cons are.
What an awesome view from your second story looking towards the lake! Are you installing trap door, or sky light windows along the roof? I lived in a 150 year old house that had incredibly beautiful wood panels, and trimming throughout, and it was walnut, which is my favorite wood, and I like a warm medium stain, which this place had. The walls were at least 8 foot, although I never did measure them but I was a cabinet and furniture maker for several years with a very close friend who owned the business, and we also did custom panel and crown molding. In my bedroom, there was a chain on an old, really cool pulley which was an original feature that was adorned with an absolutely incredible cover which had intricate period embossed scenes all over it. You would pull that chain and a hidden panel on the ceiling, which was above the 8 foot walls, in a shaft about 3 X 3 wide and 4 feet tall, and the panel would open to reveal an original glass window to the stars! It was a moon roof, and it also brought light into the room which had no windows. I positioned my bed directly beneath it and spent many, many nights just watching the stars slowly passing by. I also saw quite a lot of satellite, and yes, even UFO activity! Another awesome video Dave, thank you so much for sharing these with us. Jack Southern Ontario Canada...aye!
really appreciate you taking the time to show us your build. This spring/ summer I am starting on my own 16 x 24 foot cabin. Hopefully it turns out as good as yours lol. quick question. what is the spacing between your rafters?
I will definitely do that. I'm hoping to make a few videos of its progress and posting them. Last year I cleared and built a outhouse for the site. I just haven't had a chance to post the videos yet.
Ever think about building small cabins for others? I'm looking for someone to help me build a 16x28 cabin. I'll probably use rough cut dimensional lumber.
I'm building a stockade style cabin as well in North eastern WA. I have been following you throughout the process and have implemented several of your techniques. I see that you are using green aspen. How much shrinkage do you plan to have and how will that effect the cabin? I had a forest fire come through my property a couple years ago and plan to use all the standing dead red fir hoping that eliminates some shrinkage.
The standing dead will be superior to what I'm using for sure. When building horizonatal log Ive always used green logs and they "settle " as they srink. Building with green logs vertical I've noticed ZERO settleing, but the spaces between the logs open up a bit, but because they have fiberglass insulation between them it just "lofts" up and you dont notice the gaps. As for rigidity, the logs are scewed to the floor and screwed to the double top plate so they are solid either way. So far so good, LOL
No K , I never did fix it. But I do have a head gasket ready to go if it fails outright. And A new set of head bolts. But for now the "head gasket sealant" in a can , is working fine.
May I ask? R those ray bans u are wearing? I like them. Looking to change and seems like u have plenty of lens. I have oakleys and the lens height is very small. Thanks!
I use a Heddon lumber maker mill to do all the two-siding of the logs. As for the dimensional lumber I just buy that from Northland wood on the other side of Fairbanks.
Looks so nice and peaceful there, no neighbors...at all?? And nice and sunny, but you said it rains a lot there?? Summer times?? And one more: have you seen any animals around you?? Bears...wolfs or even grizzlys??/ Good job, and nice place, I am/ live in Florida now, but originally from Arctic Circle, Finland, Alaska is pretty similar, we just don't have high mountains...or grizzlys over there ;O)
Thanks, there are some neighbors but you can't see them. As for animals there really isn't any up on the hillside to speak of......down in the valley where its wet there are Mooose and once in a while a bear might come through but there isn't much reason for any large animals to be up on the mountain where we are.
I can't have been the only one to notice but at 4:11 look in the upper left corner. Looks like a deer passing under the spruce tree or is it Daisy? P.S- New subscriber here , really enjoying your videos. Thank you for sharing.
Yup , you hook the tape on the end of the plate and mark 1.5" then you 24 3/4" and 23 1/4" --------- 48, 3/4" - 47,1/4" Basically after the end mark you go 3/4" under and 3/4" over your center mark so when you install sheet goods ( plywood, OSB, dimensional insulation, etc. all your goods end right in the center of your rafter/joist/stud.
i know you say alot of this is repetitive, but thats why i watch these vids. set ur cam up somewhere & just handle it. my piont is that i wanna see all of it...ALL the steps no matter how repetitive or small...pleeeeease
@@Bushradical nothing specifically, its just as you go along there are certain little knacks/skills/ways you do things here n there that i find very interesting and i learn immensely from this. while things may seem boring & repetitive to you, they're SUPER fascinating to most of your viewers (like me 😁)
Dude.. warn out blues song?? Seriously?? blues never wares out.. especially that back room gut bucket blues of the greats.... J oh yea .. Niiiiiiicccceeeee! good work on that roof . this is better than "The New Yankee Workshop" even Norm would approve !
@@Bushradical any concern on no rafter ties? Im doing a 16 wide cabin with a 13-12 pitch. Same double top plate on 3x10 floor beams (36 oc) kinda like you have there doing 2x10 rafters but concerned if not tieing in to a dedicated floor beem on each one is a concern. (Fairbanks snow load)
each rafter is spiked to the double top plate and that is lag screwed into each log joist......so the two sides of the roof are held together with 5 logs floor joists and 2 gable end walls.
I had another just like it I wore for 10+ years until I burned it in a fire trying to dry it out , at George lake southeast of Delta junction in Alaska......that was in 2008....so Ive been wearing this one since then.
Thanks. We had every intention to win, but Brooke was the smallest person ever to be on the show and she starved faster than I did and we had to bow out. I'd love to try it again!
