With winter right around the corner it’s time to focus on stocking up on firewood but before that we need to build somewhere to keep it dry. Funds are tight and need to be reserved for the house so we allocated just $50 for this project.

Must say i agree with other comments that your wood shed isnt big enough. Very long winters in Alaska. If it were me after you fill this shed you might consider cutting long lengths of dead trees and haul to your cabin site. You can just cover with a tarp. It will be a time saver doing it this way. Then block up as needed. Better to have a reserve pile close than to be out in deep snow looking for fire wood this winter.
@Chris_at_Home
@Chris_at_Home 10 месяцев назад
The size of their cabin and the way they insulated it they will only need a couple of arms loads a day to heat the place.

@@Chris_at_Home Hope your correct as it sucks to have to look for and cut wood in the deep snow!

@@dcranch4820 I have a bigger cabin than that and I have two wood bags for carrying firewood into it and I only use about 1 1/2 of those bags a day. The cabin is 384 square feet on the living level with an upstairs that is like an A frame roof(18/12 pitch). Many older homes in the lower 48;have crap insulation and vapor barrier. I know someone in upstate NY in an old house that burns close to ten cord a year. We have heated our 3400 house and garage on about half that and we are in a colder area than where this cabin is. We have R-60 ceiling, R-40 foam double stud walls. The place is airtight with a fresh air system. Even the woodstove has an outside air intake.

The house is 20x24 so 480sqft. Winters are mild in this part of the state, I anticipate using no more than 4-5 cord. Hopefully less.

Great video! I love ultra cheap projects. I keep reading these comments from people saying the shed isn't big enough but some simple math says it is. You replied that you're planning on 4-5 cord. A cord is 4x4x8=128cubic feet. Your shed, per the dimensions you gave in the video, is 8x10x8=640cubic feet. Which is exactly 5 cord. I know in your last video you said you "don't math good" but I think, maybe you do.

A wood shed needs to be tall enough to be able to carry a load while standing up straight and not feel as if you are going to hit your head. As the pile dwindles you may end up chopping kindling and other chores under it so again it needs plenty of headroom. It also most, importantly, needs to be close to the house. In the middle of a snowstorm with two or three feet on the ground and sub zero temperatures you don't want it to be a trek to get wood. You also don't want to be shoveling a long path to the woodshed. It also needs to hold a good stock of wood. Seven or eight cords of dried wood won't be too much for an Alaskan winter and that is if it is dry. If it is wet you may well burn twice that much. Most of the heat in wet wood goes to drying the wood out sending steam up the chimney. Ideally you should have three years worth of wood on hand, burning the three year cured wood and seasoning the two and one year stuff. Keep in mind that the wood will be held up by the walls of your shed at the end of the rows so build it accordingly. Log saplings work well for sides and allow air movement to dry the wood while keeping most of the moisture off while being free. It would be ideal to have a wood shed next to the house where you can build a section of the exterior wall between the shed and the stove as a slide out box on tracks with full insulation in the ends. Then you push the box out (into the woodshed) and fill it as needed. Push it back in and the wall seals with a load of wood alongside the stove for burning. Keeps the mess out of the house and off the floor. As a plus you don't carry the wood far and all the bark, needles and sawdust stays in the box and not on your floor.

It looks like it will hold at least 3 cord of wood. He isn’t heating a large house but a small cabin. Also with all that glass on the south wall sunny days starting around the end of February the sun will heat the place in the day as he did a good job insulating the place along with a proper vapor barrier to stop airflow.

An excellent choice to work on as a part of your "getting ready for Winter" checklist. Your idea of getting some live-edge lumber from a sawmill for your sides is a good one. Your dogs are amazing. They are so curios, so eager to serve, and they don't want to be far from their humans. Obviously well loved. You know the priorities of work before winter. Keep plugging away!

So have you bought a snow plow for your truck yet. You may want to get one when winter gets there he'll have a hard time getting out. I realize you don't know that much about Alaska living. But you do need a bigger wood shed. It does have to withstand the snow load, but you do have to put up enough wood to make it through the winter and that's a lot of wood. You can cut beetle kill through the winter as you need it. Just don't take anything that's laying on the ground because it will probably be water-soaked. Good luck to you too Live Well
