Great explanation of turning the barrel. Im not sure if anyone else notice, but look how powerful Pujols top hand is as it breaks through the zone. You can see why MLB players are in a class by themselves

Great job explaining the elite vs non-elite swing. It kills me to see coaches telling kids to swing down direct path to the ball. I’m in process of fixing my son’s swing right now because of bad habits he picked up from old-school instruction telling him to hit ground balls to opposite side. The drawings you show in video about time in zone and possible points of contact with each swing really shows very well the benefits of turning the barrel deep in zone. I’ve told him a hundred times; but another voice stating it a different way is helpful. One other thing he’s gotten into is popping his upper body up as he’s swinging. Goes from a lower position to almost upright and on his front toes at last moment just before contact and I can’t get him to stop. I show him videos of it and he sees it. But still does it. Guessing it’s a symptom of different problem; but not sure how to fix. Starting with the bat path and going from there. Thanks for the good work here.

@@AntonelliBaseball Watch Pujols in a more recent video he does not explain this path. He teaches more of a direct/chop path when in reality he had great bat path. Thanks Anthony for dedicating your time to share these helpful videos. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wQ1zxG9-2aM.html

Right on regarding timing issues really are more than likely path issues. My 8 YO daughter drops the barrel such that it is almost level (e.g. almost on laying on her shoulder) before she launches resulting in a really flat bat path. Unless she is perfectly on time with the pitch the result is typically a ground ball (to left or right side depending on pitch location) or popup to right side.

Very interesting! Thanks for sharing!

If the ball is going to the ground, it is because she is coming up with her body as she swings the bat. Body posture go up, ball go down

Awesome shot right there Matt. Question: which Hand do you think he's leading in taking the bat to the ball top or bottom?

Matt what's your thoughts on the front arm in the triangle. I'm thinking that if the triangle maintains it size through the swing it will force you to not arm swing. So the elbows should maintain the distance from each other and not collapse in towards one another.
@AntonelliBaseball
@AntonelliBaseball 6 лет назад
I think the relationship stays pretty much the same. I do think the back elbow lowers a bit more than the front raises, but the relationship is close to the same. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Hey Matt, any advice for a 9 year old that steps in the bucket? Sees the ball well and makes contact consistently but kills his power by stepping back with his front foot. He knows he's doing it but we are struggling to fix it unless something is behind him.
@AntonelliBaseball

I would take 1,000 reps without evening swinging, just striding straight. Put a line down on the ground. If he does it enough he will get it. Thanks for watching and commenting! Good luck to him!

You see in your upper body swing mechanics video and turn the barrel vs push the barrel videos you are literally turning the barrel to get a slightly upward plain in your swing, but in swings like Albert’s I don’t see a turn of the barrel.. if you could just clarify some things for me I would surely appreciate it..
@coachjavierchavez8098

As the back elbow starts to drop to connection, Albert is pivoting the wrist to bring knob to nose first, the leg snap turns his body to the ball
@connectbaseball986

For a young player, how can it b taught without getting a bat that loops under the ball? Explaining connection is what I mean per say.

Lateral tilt of the hip drills plus wrist pivots will take care of that
@noahtorres5553
@noahtorres5553 6 лет назад
Hey Matt my question is you see how Albert Pujols doesn’t physically turn his barrel compared to people like Josh Donaldson and Hank Aaron.. so what do you mean by turning the barrel? Cause I see some that literally turn their barrel and other elite hitter like Albert that don’t really turn their barrel as much.
@AntonelliBaseball

Some definitely do it more than others. Watch our video on manny I go more in depth on it. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Really wish he would have stayed in St. Louis. I think if he had stayed he could have been a Stan Musial type of figure there. I’m not him so I guess I shouldn’t even try to judge. Anyway, my question is bat speed vs. swinging hard. In little league my coaches always told me bat speed was more important, but the difference was a mystery. Any way to clarify the difference? Great breakdown by the way. I can really see the body generating the power instead of the arms. Of course that brings up the question of arm extension. I’ve heard many commentators talk about good arm extension. What about that!? Love your videos, and as always, thanks!

As a life long Third generation Cardinals fan,he is a Stan Musial type figure,his no.5 will be retired,he will have a statue outside of the stadium,and when returns next year,with a series with the Angels for the first time since he left you will see how much he is still loved and appreciated.that is set in stone.book it Danno!

So Pete Rose wasn't an elite hitter? 4,256 hits, .303 career average, 44-game hitting streak, 1,314 RBI's.... all without turning the barrel. All with a flat/downward swing plane, and all while leading with the knob. I'm not saying rotating the barrel is wrong. I'm simply proving that to be an "elite" batter doesn't require it. Rose is the prime example, but there are others.
@AntonelliBaseball
@AntonelliBaseball 6 лет назад
He was great, but I wouldn't say he was a downward swing plane that lead with the knob. Thanks for watching!
@johnnyjohnson1370
@johnnyjohnson1370 6 лет назад
Rose never pushed his knob at the pitch ,he actually was a pinball swinger,bat on back shoulder,upper arm ,shoulders turning the arms staying bent into the zone.A slight upper cut ,on bat path for 4 feet Google Jack Mankin,Bat SPEED com or overhead view of Pete Rose

I've watched that youtube video of Pujols trying to explain his swing. It's crazy. His swing doesn't match what he says. A video with Freeman (Braves) is like that, also. It's a mystery to me why they can't explain what they actually do.

The knob does go to the ball, but the pivot (knob to nose) happens first, then the leg coiled brigs the knob and barrel to the ball
