Fire activity worsened in Alberta's Jasper National Park on Wednesday, July 24, 2024.
As the afternoon progressed, the sky at the park gates some 50-kilometres east of the Jasper townsite turned dark orange and ash began raining down.
Global News reporter Lisa MacGregor reports from the area, where late in the afternoon, Parks Canada announced due to significant fire activity and forecasted strong winds, first responders will start to be relocated to Hinton. Parks Canada said given the intensity of fire behaviour being observed, the decision has been made to limit the number of responders exposed to this risk.
Firefighting personnel, aircraft and a few incident command staff will remain in the town of Jasper and continue efforts to protect the town.

Disappointed Global News has their reporter working in those conditions with no personal protective equipment! While I appreciate the news update it shouldn't come at the cost of someone else's health and safety. Yes, frontline reporting has hazards but I can't help feeling embarrassed to see her out there as she's reporting on fire fighters being evacuated. Not cool.

After cutting their wildfire budget from $130M in 2017 to $100M, eliminating the 63-man Aerial Rapattack Team, closing 30 of Alberta’s 127 Wildfire Lookout Towers & cutting fire training, Alberta is now preparing to ask the fed gov for Armed Forces help to fight their wildfires -

Prayers go out to all first responders and people who have suffered losses. It’s time we take action to reduce the risk of towns burning down, there are steps we can take immediately such as creating a fire line around vulnerable communities. We can cut down the trees that catch fire easily and plant more fire resistant trees in their place like Ash, maple and Oak.

@user-pt1cs4lq7f
@user-pt1cs4lq7f 2 месяца назад

Notley cut the budget by $15 million in 2016. After the fort Mac fire they added an additional $30 million to offset the previous cut and increase funding. Since 2018 the annual amount allocated has dropped from $130 to $100 million. Budget info can be found in the Edmonton journal and Edmonton sun. I’m sure there are similar articles and info for other news sources.

Yes I'd say but at this rate a fire this bad you'd have to flood out the city. She's a beautiful monster wildfires dangerous yes look at lytton bc. Me and my wife and kids were coming back from seeing my parents in Prince George before this went us in flames

There's potentially up to 15 mm of rainfall expected tonight, but the winds are expected to be 30-50 km/h tonight and potentially reach up to 70 km/h tomorrow. It's not looking promising.

@Alex-js5lg ok I looked up the temps myself and with that heat dome taking off it will make working the fires easier then in the heat dome

I want some one to explain to me what causes these fires ? We were there last Saturday & there was no rain of lightening ! Just dried & high temp & cool at night, In Florida, we have rain, thundering, tornados, hurricanes but there is no gov prohibitions. What I think is that the manufacturing of woods which is large in these provinces create the fires to obtain their wood tree. I saw about 100 trucks carrying wood in BC & Alberta too.
@TalairanPerigord
@TalairanPerigord 2 месяца назад
Well, you're wrong about the lumber industry being responsible for these fires. Lightning caused these ones (whether you saw it personally or not), and unlike Florida, Alberta is a dry, hot climate. And it's been unusually dry and hot for a couple of years now.

Oh brother...forests we have plenty of and they can grow back....any comment on potential lost lives? Isn't that just a titch more important then some trees?
