I booked Anvil once and the show bombed. I renegotiated the guarantee with the Agent over the phone and he never clarified it to the band, so they thought I was intentionally shorting them. So they tough guyed the owner of the venue and locked my friend in their van to try to intimidate us. So Anvil is really cool band if you wanted my opinion.

The story with the Dance of Death cover, apparently, is that the artist sent that to the band as like a proof of concept/rough layout kind of thing, just to show the direction he was going to go. Then the band was like "GREAT, SEND IT TO THE PRINTER" without understanding it wasn't the final piece. The artist, as far as I know, asked to not be credited for it

YES!!!! I'VE ALWAYS THOUGHT THE COWBOYS FROM HELL ALBUM ART IS CRAP!!!! It looks legit like a local band who photoshopped themselves in a weird western scene. I'm so happy someone else feels that way!

The Sublime logo just became the first band to surpass Nirvana in most merchandise sold. Bradley bought that design from Opie the tattoo artist for $25 and now it's worth Millions.

Iron Maiden is one of my favorite bands and they had legendary amazing artwork on almost all their albums, so you can imagine my surprise when dance of death came out. I actually thought it was a joke, I was convinced that it wasn't a real album cover until I bought the album and I still can't believe they went through with putting that out. I want to know what was going through their heads. I'm glad you mentioned it because it's definitely probably the worst album cover of all time, the album isn't that bad, it's not one of their best, but it's definitely not as bad as the cover art.

My favourite of all these album art is The Used. I didn't even know about scene art but I'm into it.

White Pony is one of my top 5 albums, I know you dont love them but they just hit when I was an impressionable teen and still love them to this day, respect the opinion tho

I’m a big fan of artwork specially when I’m downloading music on my iPhone the artwork has to come with it. Something about late 90s/early 2000s artwork is not only nostalgic but iconic. Linkin Parks Hybrid Theory, Disturbeds The Sickness, Limp Bizkits Significant Other, Deftones with White Pony, Papa Roach with Infest and Godsmacks debut album in 98. Nu metal albums defiantly have iconic album covers even if some albums aren’t best you have to respect the art cause it tells stories

Deftones self titled album is one of my favorite covers. I had a shirt with it on it that was washed and worn so many times it fell apart. You should also put Polyphia art on the next tier list too.

Genuinely surprised on your take for IL&D, and the lack of mention for Alex Pardee. It’s a sign of the time, sure, but the entire insert/booklet/linear notes was done so well and fit the aesthetic so well.

You should do one of these but just album covers with terrible CGI. Nu-metal especially loved to make these computer generated covers that were awful

I love darkthrone! They’re probably the most influential band in the genre, and their album covers are some of the most iconic in the history of metal, across the board. My transilvanian hunger t shirt is easily my favorite piece of merch besides of course my Lady Gaga tank top

That 5FDP cover is one of those shirts you see at a Flea Market in the biker section and says "Judged by 12, carried by 6"

So glad you talked about Raymond Pettibon. He is one of the most underrated album/flyer artists. I have several of his art books and keep them on my coffee table. Guests always check it out and comment on it. I always thought N.M. Pane, the artist who does 93’s cartoon characters, looks like he was inspired by Raymond.

Gotta turn the rock journalist book of adjectives into a shirt somehow.

I’m not looking to dunk on your work or anything, it’s not like I have any of mine own to stand on, but this video felt like it fits better with your second channel. There wasn’t a whole lot of serious or factual, just zany and fun that was a bit heavy on the dunking. I expect that when I’m on the Finn McKenty channel, but I guess it just caught me off guard here. I suppose I was jonesing to talk some graphic design like you did on the interview with Ryan from Demon Hunter. That said, I did appreciate the talk about Cowboy’s From Hell lack of contrast through the sepia tones, the nods to deviantart during the used cover because I saw tons of that exact style there during my dial up internet days, and you putting respect on Mear One’s name. Also the album art tramp stamp is some very advanced stuff!

Finn did this on his main channel and it’s so much funnier on here you can tell there’s so much more freedom in this channel, this is why I prefer this channel.

You remember pre social media days, when bands made geo-cities websites? Those layouts were next level.

I have always loved the art work associated with converge. I had a Jane Doe shirt and hoodie that I got in 2003 while in junior high. That album was one of my favorites growing up and I still love it today. Converge and TDEP played a massive role in my life.

It'd be awesome to see you make a video about the intersection of punk and graphic design. I wonder if the Metal Magic artwork inspired the Puma Pride mural on an episode of the Simpsons.

I respectfully disagree with the used artwork placement haha. I love Alex Pardee artwork. He may have been the “founder” of that style (maybe, maybe not) but I do agree that it was tainted with all the emo MySpace art. But when this list starts off with weathered going to S tier all bets were off. Keep up the content my friend.

Best thing about the Sunbather artwork is that the colors are supposed to be like looking at the sun with you eyes closed. Not exact obviously, but I think it shows some cool thought behind the design.

Yesss . Just saw Converge open for Meshuggah on Friday! So many beards. I was rockin the studded black leather bustier, wrist cuffs, skinny jeans & platform sandals tho. Hair with a fresh skunk stripe flat ironed to death. Early 2000s metalcore drip forever. You would’ve been proud! Can’t believe I’ve made it to 37 without any band tats. I have considered many including the white pony, danzig logo & linkin park flying solider thingy. However, my drumsticks tramp stamp & emo hello kitty are more than enough.

People who love that Iron Maiden cover are also the same people that argue that Legend of Zelda's Ocarina of Time's graphics on the 64 are still the best even today. "It has charm" they would say

The "Dirt" album art deserves better. What kinda ruins it is the edition and post production, it's has way too much saturation and contrast, but the concept and the original picture are really amazing. Also, we see a lot of parodies out there.

Yep pretty much nailed it with converge. Altho I have the art from the back of the liner notes on my arm. But I do have a beard. A sound of animas fighting tattoo as well as a Circa survive tattoo. I’m now 36 so I have gained dad bod status so I can’t wear all my old band shirts anymore. But I have 1 inch gauges. And still dress like I did 15 years ago. And I’m definitely the type of guy that when asked about different bands I tend to say “I liked their old stuff” Like I’m a meta hipster elder emo 😂

I once in a great while use that word (seminal) it just means they strongly influenced musicians that came after them. Or in this case that, that specific album was extremely influential on musicians that came after it came out.

No Cannibal Corpse!?!? Anyway, some other covers that catch my eye personally is pretty much all Mgła album covers, The Faceless - In Becoming a Ghost and Sleep - Dopesmoker. An iconic cover that comes to mind would have to be Rage Against The Machine self titled, but on the other hand Evil Empire is just goofy looking, though the face itself is technically drawn good. Edit: I had to add Mark Tom Travis show live, I absolutely love that cover.
