Hola everyone! Thanks for watching today's upload. Hope you're all doing ok! This is going to be part of a series where I discuss formulation based information as I continue on in my cosmetic sciences program. Let me know what other topics you'd like to see me cover! What're your thoughts on alcohols in skincare formulations? What other ingredients get really bad raps and don't deserve them? Hope you have a great day! xoxo

All my favourite sunscreens contain alcohol🌅 i think if someone is very concerned about alcohol the first step is to stop drinking it, since it’s bad not only for your skin, but your overall health 🥰
3 года назад
Oooooooh this is TEAAAAAA. Real talk though, understanding the effects of alcohol consumption from a cellular level form a biological perspective is very eye opening. Am I typing this while I drink my wine though? Absolutely

I'm pretty sure that Biore sunscreen was breaking my skin out tho lol. I might have never figured it out if it wasn't for youtubers taking about alcohol all the time.

I bought that Biore sunscreen because of your recommendation and I love it!! I do smell the alcohol but since I learned what the function of alcohol is from you and James I don't pay attention to it. Thank you always for teaching from a Science perspective!!!

Personally, I avoid simple alcohols in my skincare products. I tried the Biore sunscreen and I found that repeated use dehydrated my skin. I acknowledge that simple alcohols have a purpose in skincare, but if I can find products that work well without the use of it, I don’t need it in my skincare products. If you don’t mind simple alcohols in your skincare products, then you do you, boo boo.

I got the Skin Aqua Super Moisture Gel and decided it would never go near my face after opening it and smelling all that alcohol. My skin reacts to a lot of sunscreens so I wasn't going to risk it. I've been using it just on my neck and now that the bottle is almost empty, tried it on my face because I heard your recommendation and thought I should give it a chance since I would probably never buy it again. My face didn't react at all. No redness, no burning, nothing!
3 года назад
Oh damn that makes me happy to hear! It can be daunting to try something when you’ve had experiences where you’ve had reactions and you don’t want that to happen again (trust me, I had my own incident this year), but I’m happy this worked out for you after you gave it a shot!

That’s the goal! The stuff I learn and apply in class is so interesting and was honestly what I intended to make the channel more about! As I get further into my program and learn more I’ll definitely be sharing it, but I also have some interesting content lined up with some amazing industry folk

All these are excellent points, however, after frequently using a sunscreen with denatured alcohol, my skin was dehydrated and I personally prefer to avoid it altogether. I’d love it if you could make a collab with dr V discussing your different points of view for skincare for skin of colour!!!

the whole panic around parabens needs to stop lol!! TBH I once was one of those people that would write off a product if it had alcohol... very ashamed lol

Parabens and witch hazel gets demonized a lot. I agree with James and a few other creators who have said that it's the dosage that makes something poisonous not ingredient itself. Also, majority of ingredient lists aren't broken down where the concentration of each ingredient is listed out.

Thank you for this video. I completely agree you can't judge a product just by its ingredient list. Alcohol in skincare doesn't bother me because alcohol can be used for so many formulation reasons and there are so many different types

Honestly seeing you talk about this topic so professionally and in an easy to understand way is rly making me question wether I should go into cosmetic formulation and all that kinda stuff. And also, are you in that program to become a cosmetic formulator, dermatologist, etc or just to knOw thE infO I guess...just wondering

Not bothered by alcohol in skincare. Not that I'm specifically looking for it but here and there it's fine. The whole alcohol in skincare panic makes me think of the movie American Psycho and Patrick Bateman's skincare routine🤭 - he says that he uses an alcohol free toner as alcohol is drying (fair enough, most toners back in the day had alcohol in them, but you know, you get the message lol)

Hi Ramón! Does alcohol age your skin over time?
@eobrien1
@eobrien1 3 года назад
This sounds like a great program you’re in. Super interesting! One way I’ve seen how important formula is - with relation to alcohol - is hand sanitizer. Though ethanol and isopropyl alcohol are always considered drying generally by people, as a teacher in a pandemic, I’m using hand sanitizer probably literally at least 40-50x a day, with touching papers, doorknobs etc. With the glycerin and polymers in these formulas, I am super surprised that the amount of (fragrance free, simple formulas) hand sanitizer i’m using has actually helped my hands to be *less* dry. As compared to when I was at home in spring/summer and just washing all the time. However as you say, “that being said”, as someone w rosacea, alcohol won’t come within 100 ft of the skin on my face 😂 in any product ever

I am a person who never had any issue with alcohol / chemical uv filter / fragrance / paraben People’s nowadays too nervous about ingredients it’s very funny when someone say “oh it contains alcohol , it has fragrance I can’t use it , they always say like that with skincare “but” if those ingredients contain in cosmetics they never care It indicates that they don’t have any prove about it they just scared because people and brand say it

I use tretinoin and dang I cannot tolerate anything with the type of alcohol that you can smell (in some sunscreens or toners), it stings like crazy!!! and at night my skin ends up super red and hurts so bad then I have to put healing ointment to help out. I was never this sensitive before tret, I used to use gel sunscreens with alcohol so well and they felt sooo good!!! I missed them SO much!!!!! But my acne is getting better now, so I choose to just keep using tretinoin and have to use products without any alcohol in it. I cannot have it all XD. I miss those fresh sunscreens so much tho!!!!!!!
3 года назад
Omg what strength tret are you using and how often
@marythr2617

Glow By Ramón I have been using 0.05% tretinoin once every two to three days. I have been on that prescription since about 7 months ago. I do not peel anymore but still cannot tolerate anything with alcohol in it. I use tons of cerave at night and use a creamy P20 sunscreen for kids during the day (this sunscreen is chemical and somehow it does not sting or hurt my sensitive skin at all). I miss gel sunscreens hehe, but cannot use them.

Personally I don’t like alcohol in my skin care, even in sunscreen. My usual sunscreen for years is Paula’s Choice Youth Extending Fluid SPF 50 which I love. I tried a past k beauty sunscreen and also the La Roche Posay (which I was excited for due to the fluid texture and high UVA protection) but both obviously irritated my skin and made it feel more dry and powder did not look great on top.

A couple months ago my skin barrier got compromised (I don't know what caused it, but my skin slowly became red and itchy), so I stopped using my Krave sunscreen (because I would get a burning sensation) and switched to an alcohol free one. Now that my skin is back to normal I'm afraid that my skin might go back to being sensitized. Is it safe for me to go back to the Krave sunscreen now? Or am I one of the people that should avoid drying alcohols on my skincare?
3 года назад
Again, consider that the alcohol is in the formulation with an alternative purpose. It’s not a super high % that is acting directly on the skin, rather serving a role in the over formulation. It’s like eating a raw egg vs the egg in the final baked cake. Unless you’re allergic to egg, it shouldn’t have a harmful effect on you. That being said, ease into it if you’re concerned because that concern after a reaction is very valid. Spot test it behind your ear or on your wrist for a couple days first since those areas are more sensitive and they’re also more discreet, so that if you do get a reaction, it won’t be all over your face.

Parabens get a bad rep. So many companies are not formulating with parabens bc people think is bad😩 but it has been shown to be safe and as far as I know it’s like one of the best preservatives. Question does biore sunscreen sting your eyes???
3 года назад
It doesn’t sting the area around my eyes or get into my eyes easily since it’s not very emollient and I find it sets down very quickly!

Weird question, but I'm interested to know if you have any insight: can wearing sunscreen prevent you from absorbing vitamin D from the sun? I found out on my recent lab work that I'm extremely vitamin D deficient, and while I know that can be caused by a number of reasons and you're not a doctor and I'm not asking you to diagnose me or anything, it got me thinking and you're the sunscreen expert. So I was hoping you would know the answer of if sunscreen filters could block you from getting vitamin D from sunlight. I'm out in the sun all the time, but I'm RELIGIOUS about using sunscreen anywhere my skin's exposed and actually reapply it, so could that actually have any downsides I haven't heard of?
3 года назад
As far as I’m aware no! Mainly because there’s a lot of other ways to absorb Vit D through dietary means, but also because you’re still able to get some Vit D even if you wear sunscreen

Never bother with all those complicated ingredients BUT....like you always say..." THAT BEING SAAAAIIIDD"...the formulation does matter...if it works for you....go for it!!!!...the same for preservatives!!!... so complicated...by the way...think about all those great Korean or Japanese sunscreens without some kind of alcohol ingredients to make it "disappear "...
