Vicki posed the question, on the video I posted about how to make Alcohol Ink Ornaments, if you could add glitter to them. The short answer - Of course! This video is the longer answer... I give you three different methods of adding the glitter. Even one method that isn't my favourite but one that many use!
Check out the three versions and see which one appeals more to you! I've posted links below to the original version of the ornaments (dare I say the 'classic'), along with a second where I did a mirror finish backing and the 'live' I completed answering some of the most common questions I get asked... helping to troubleshoot issues... should you have any!
Alcohol Ink Ornaments: • Alcohol Ink Xmas Ornam...
Mirrored Alcohol Ink Ornaments: • Making Mirrored Alcoho...
Live Q&A Troubleshooting the making: • Post

I’ve watched far too many videos and your technique is my favorite! I used a small syringe of polycrylic before adding glitter to my ornaments last year, but I’m going to try spray adhesive this time around. Thanks for great tutorials and inspiration!

Suzy... I did a class a couple of weeks ago and we did just the alcohol ink with glitter... worked great... and the balls I did with the same method still all have glitter intact. That said... so do the ones with the spray adhesive!!

I like to stamp my Alcohol Inks on the outside of the ornaments. Because I love the stamped look! I also put irridesent fine glitter into the ball. I use polyacrylic to keep the glitter stuck to the inside. I also have coated the inside with matte white paint and like the look of that too! Then I spray with UV protective spray. I don't find it very expensive as I can get a lot of balls done with one bottle even with 2 coats! ❤❤❤ I'm going to try the wet ink with glitter and see how I like it, as that's a method I havent tried yet. With two new trees to cover in ornaments, I'm willing to try any method. I love the stamped Alcohol Ink because it reminds me of stained glass. My inside tree is going to have a very elegant look. Where my porch tree is more fun and whimsical. So, I have the best of both worlds going on! 😂 Hopefully, there's not any or very few "mistake balls" . Any I have will go on the very back of the pirch tree. I'm about half way through and so far no mistakes, but one! I can live with that!!! It's only a mistake because I personally don't like the colors! 😊😊😊

Looking back at the glitter balls i made... I like the version with adding the glitter to the wet ink best. It was easiest, quickest and seems to have the best 'finished' look. I hope you're as pleased!!!

A tip to drying these a bit faster is to have a hair dryer on low heat on low fan & it evaporated faster

I've done a class on this since this video - we all used the method I preferred... adding the alcohol ink then the glitter while still wet, then more ink, more glitter... They all looked lovely, were easy and have continued to look great!!

What colors would u add to make a clear ball look iridescent? I have so many clear balls and have just thought about trying alcohol inks. Thanks for the info in your video. Answered a bunch of questions for me!
@QueenBeeCreations
@QueenBeeCreations 9 месяцев назад
Hmmm… iridescent would mean there’s a bit of a reflective sheen to it. Check out the Alcohol ink ornaments I did with a mirror backing and see if that works for you.

What an absolutely wonderful video. I noticed right off before even looking at your Channel information that you must be from Ontario Canada because of that White Rose spray can off to the side that company was a from Ontario which unfortunately closed down almost 20 years I think or maybe more. I had that exact same can to. I live in Oakville, Ontario the city right next door to you so hiya Neighbor. I love all sort of crafts I hav done ornaments like yours but differently but I love your ideas better. I also do painting and resin works plus I also make greetings cards with rubber stamps and dies. Maybe you would like to talk since we are so close that’s if you want to that is. I would totally understand if you don’t. I will leave it up to you. Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Mary Katherine

Wow! You are observant! I get all kinds of 'older' items from folks clearing out their craft stashes... that one is old but still works fine though! I do remember when White Rose was around though so... memories there! I actually grew up in Oakville and lived there until about 10 years ago when I moved to Burlington. You'll have to pop by the shop sometime when you're out this way, say Hi and talk crafting!!

Love your videos Cindy! Just curious why you don’t add the white acrylic paint after the glitter step? Have you tried mixing glitter in the white acrylic paint and then adding it?
@QueenBeeCreations
@QueenBeeCreations 11 месяцев назад
The white isn't needed in this version. The acrylic is added to help the alcohol inks stand out - which is what the glitter does. If you added the glitter to the acrylic - which is opaque... you would not see the glitter at all, the white would coat/mask it. The glitter itself is opaque so you actually wouldn't really see the white if you added it over the glitter layer so really, it's an unnecessary step.

When you use white paint inside, does gesso work well. I want to make sure it does not crack. Thank you PS love your videos!!

Beverly… unfortunately I haven’t tried gesso so I can’t address that one for you. I know that I have balls from 3 years ago using the method I demonstrated with no cracking though.

What is the best gloss to use to give them a glass like finish? After pouring paint or alcohol ink on the outside?
@QueenBeeCreations
@QueenBeeCreations 9 месяцев назад
Ahhh.. Teresa, I’m not sure I’ve got the best advice for you on this since I don’t often do finishes on the outside of the balls, preferring the glass finish, so I haven’t tried many, and it will depend upon where you are and what you can get. That said though, look for one that says non-yellowing and is high-gloss, not just glossy if you can.

These are real pretty! I'm curious now that the inks have been done for quite awhile how the glitter stuck to the ink long-term?
@QueenBeeCreations
@QueenBeeCreations 11 месяцев назад
So far they are still fine! If you were concerned you could perhaps spray a clear coat sealer in after everything has dried but it hasn't proven problematic so far. That said... the real test is after storing for a year....

I have had the best reactions with simply using the alcohol inks with the glitter added. Just had a group do them them this way in a class with awesome results. Just add one colour of the alcohol inks into the ball, swirl (but don't used canned air), add glitter to the wet ornament - that's what gets the glitter to stick. Then add another colour (or more of the same) and add glitter again. If you have clear spaces to fill you can add a spritz or two of plain alcohol - adding glitter again. The combinations of ink colours to glitter colours are endless and create beautiful contrasts.

You've said you purchase your ornaments in bulk. Can you say where you get them? Also, in your opinion, what's the best size to use? Thanks!
@QueenBeeCreations
@QueenBeeCreations 10 месяцев назад
In all honesty, I bought a bulk of 500 a little over 2 years ago. Ultimately, they came from China and... after the order was placed I figured I was likely out of luck. However, after a couple of months they did arrive with minimal breakage surprisingly. I believe I ordered them through AliBaba because the price point was right. As for size... these are the regular size balls, which I find is just about right. The flatter 'lentil' shaped ones also work well... I think I used a couple of that shape when I did the mirror effect version of the alcohol ink balls. regular sized ornament balls are usually about 2.5 to 3" I think.
