I like Hobgoblin but will buy the Aldi version its still 5.2% at least for now and a bit cheaper. I can't tell much of a difference might if I did a side by side.
Hobgoblin was the beer that got me into ale, way back in 2007. I've been on a journey through IPAs, NEIPAs, DIPAs, but have now come full circle, and drink Hobgoblin again!
Thanks for that. Hobgoblin was a favourite 20 years ago but my palette has changed with the NEIPAs and stouts. I don’t think it’s as good nowadays but it’s drinkable. I need to try the harpers Ruby.
I'm not keen on the ABV reduction trend in the uk, but I'm glad the Hobgoblin still tastes good, I used to drink it years ago, must try it again.... The Aldi one sounds possibly even more to my tastes, I prefer more savoury tastes...
I absolutely love the Harpers Ruby Ale, it's my 'go to' Winter beer, every bit as good as Hobgoblin Ruby IMO. A couple of years ago it was £1.09 a bottle, which was an absolute bargain, shame that inflation has pushed it up.
Just to let you know it's beer o'clock and that Suffolk Bitter from earlier is very nice indeed. Thank you. Oh, and it's England vs Brazil. Happy days 🍻
hobgoblin hasnt been the beer it was for years i prefer the harpers atm wychwood was my fave brewery in the day since the sell out they just taste like basic beers but i do like the hobgoblin ipa
I still like Hobgoblin although I always thought the draught version wasn’t as flavoursome and was 4.5 % years ago. But I prefer the Harpers which to my tastebuds is like Hobgoblin with bells on.
Yes, it was 5.2% until very recently. I am not quite sure why there has been an erosion of % ABV in so many products in UK recently. It does not seem to match the fiscal tax system very much. The European versions are often higher ABV.
@@americasfavoritehoarder I think beer in America is still a little stronger, I've never seen anything like the ABV reductions in the UK! People in continental Europe wouldn't understand it at all, would laugh at it they take beer much more seriously!
Abv reduction in UK are 2 fold, UK Gov. taxes, the higher abv. more tax due and Scottish and Welsh minimum unit pricing, they probably assume England will follow soon
Remember that a round of drinks many moons ago cost a small fraction of our hourly wage. Now, its a joke. Face to face socialising without the dopamine loaded social media needs to be protected like rainforests.
If you had drank Hobgoblin regularly over the last ten years Simon you would have noticed the steady decline and cheapening of the ingredients with the dreaded overdose of GS that they put in it now, maybe then you'd have a different opinion.
Bit weird this, but in cans, Hobgoblin is only 4.5%! I was gifted some recently and it was truly awful - no resemblance whatsoever of the original beer.
Dunno if you'll see this..... but the Aldi Ruby Red has now been reduced to 5% - spotted tonight 20/09/24 - bet it tastes like piss just like the hobgoblin does after the reduction from 5.2
Hobgoblin used to be 5.6% in bottles & cans and 5.4% on draught. It was then dialled back in 2013 to 5.2% in bottles but cans and draught stayed at 5.4% until 2015/2016 then it all made to the 5.2% recipe. Between 2013 and 2016 it was very difficult to find cans of Hobgoblin as everyone who drank it wanted cans due to the higher ABV. Now all variants of Hobgoblin Ruby are brewed to 5% including the draught version.
Terrible trally the way wychwood went. They had a great range with great bottle art. Hobgoblin, Fiddlers Elbow, Scarecrow, Goliath....all gone now with and replaced with a cheap corporate label
