Alec Longstreth Talks About Carl Barks

Folks, Carl Barks was one of my greatest inspirations in my youth. Here in Brazil, his comics went full power in the 70s and the 80s, with many Disney publications by Editora Abril, one of the biggest publishers in the country. We always noticed a big difference between Carl's stories and the rest. And they kept it the way it should be: the first and last stories on any publication were always Barks stories! Just for the record, the names of the Duck family in Brazilian Portuguese: Pato Donald (Donald Duck), Tio Patinhas (Uncle Scrooge), Gastão (Gladstone Gander), Vovó Donalda (Grandma Duck), Margarida (Daisy Duck), Huguinho, Luizinho, Zezinho (Huey, Louie, Dewey Duck).

Great job, great presentation! And what a sweet thing to do, to prompt Fantagraphics to send the Duck books to the library! Very glad there is a park there now, and some recognition! :) Those stories! I used to get the Disney digests as a young kid; I always thought it was strange that the Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge stories were so much better than the rest! In one of them, some dialogue confused me and I asked my dad, "What's a Rolls-Caddy?" Dad got a kick out of that joke! :) Good times!

When I was a child growing up in Georgia in the 1950's, I was lucky enough to live around the corner from a soda shop where they had a wall of all the latest comic books and magazines. It never ocurred to me to buy one because the proprietor was happy to let me sit there for hours reading one after the next while sipping a 5 cent coke. My favorite comics were those by Carl Barks. I remember one in particular that really impressed me. Uncle Scrooge decided to buy up all the 1926 quarters in the country and then melt them down so he would have the most valuable coin ever. Unfortunately, Donald bumped into him, knocked the coin out of his hand and it rolled out into the street where it was run over by a STEAMROLLER! Uncle Scrooge was none-too-happy, lemme tellya....20 years later when I was working at Marvel, I noticed my boss, the late John Verpoorten kept a framed photo on his desk of Mr. Barks and himself standing outside Mr. Barks' house in Oregon. Apparently he and a friend went to see Mr. Barks and his friend took the photo. "What do you want to do today, John...?" "I dunno, Bill, let's go over and have a little visit with Carl Barks...he lives not too far from here."

Is the Dane Martin mentioned around the 21:37 mark the cartoonist? The one from Debbie’s comics? I would really love to see an interview with him. One of the most idiosyncratic voices in comics and has only self-published, from what I understand. Also seems like a human repository for funny animals and Disney comics trivia. Anyway, great show! Keep pumping these interviews, they’re great!

The title of "The Good Duck Artist" always sounded to me like a prequel to The Great Mouse Detective.

I find it kinda odd to not read specific stories, because of "racism" in the some stories. I think Barks was very respectful in his comics, if painting some people yellow is strictly racism to you, i might get it, but it was never his intention to make fun of different people. Of all the horrid stuff out there today, it seems pretty mild to me

It was really nice to listen this, And in the end ,The story that you made Carl Barks recognized in his town. So good you did that! And omg, I cant belive its like that. Yes, in Europe Carl Barks is like a god. There is no house with out a stack of Donal Duck magasin. Donal is a faliur,I think that is what Europeans like,Its so good to read about someone who is a complete looser,and almost desperate to turn things around

Carl Barks is amazing, but Alec Longstreth is insufferable. Spends way too much time tearing his hair out about alleged racism and reading Barks' work "responsibly." Neurotic Liberalism at is worst. Your kids wont become racist just because they read "Tralla La."

Complaining about some silly interpretations of races as cartoon animals is very silly. All his work should be remember, to only want the ones you find appropriate to be reprinted is ridiculous everything should be remember so that everyone has the chance to read what they want to read.
