Carl Barks was a genius and no story displays this better than 'The Second-Richest Duck', originally published in Uncle Scrooge #15 from Dell Comics. This latest episode of our deep-dive series 'Single Issues I Love' summarizes and analyses this story focusing on Bark's wonderful art, dynamism, expressions and immaculate use of the comics medium, in both art and writing. Featuring a close look at the main story in this issue, and a discussion on why a children's comic from the 1950s deserves a spot among the most impressive and wonderful comics of all time!
This story appears in the collected volume The Lost Crown of Genghis Khan, from Fantagraphics!

Thanks! This was really interesting. Is there a starting place for reading Carl Barks that you’d recommend, as far as trades/collected editions?

Fantagraphics has a great series of hardcovers reprinting Barks chronologically, in Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge volumes. If you take a look at my Shelf 10 video, you’ll get a look at some of them. Any of those would be a great start, especially ‘Only a Poor Old Man’ and ‘Lost in the Andes’.

@@ftlocThanks. I get that all the time. LOL! Are you a Rosa fan as well? I've met him many times and have about 30 prints and multiple sketches from him on my wall. I'm gonna be seeing him here in just a couple of weeks again actually. I would just HIIIIIIGHLY suggest to anyone that loves the work of Barks to get the Rosa work as well. Almost literally every single story of his is packed with Barks details and it's all based ONLY on the Barks work. For me, as an American, I only consider Barks and Rosa to be canon.

@@SimpleManGuitars1973 Oh yes, of course I love Don Rosa as well. I have the Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck and then the 8 volumes in the Fantagraphics library, which saved me from having to hunt everything down piecemeal.

I don't understand people who were surprised by your choice of a "children" comic story for one of your top ten. A good work is a good work wether it is aimed for children or not. Tintin was made for children and nobody raised an eyebrow when he was featured in many of your videos. People who snub great classic comic book aimed at younger readers (as they all were before the 1970's) are snubbing the foundations on which today's comic books were built on. Carl Barks's masterful work has inspired not only tons of comic book creators, but also scientific inventors (search it up!), filmmakers, and many other creative people. Yes, Carl Barks wrote and drew mainly for a young public but he never did so in a condescending way. John Stanley is another master storyteller from the same period who did great work.

Absolutely, and you know I agree with that. Still, this channel does seem to have a wide viewership (In range, I'm saying, not sheer numbers) so there will always be people watching who are just getting started reading comics, or have only seen one or two types of comics etc. Additionally, not all of the Golden Age stands up to modern eyes, so someone who is familiar but only with superhero comics from that time could be forgiven for thinking all of the storytelling at the time was the same. That's one of the great things about having one's own channel, I can turn the spotlight wherever I want based on what I see people reading or reacting to around me. At the same time, it's always a pleasure to mingle with those 'in the know' 😀

The whole thing reminds me of the rivalry between Carnegie and Rockefeller. They were both equally rich and they just decided to take shots at each other. Rockefeller sending Carnegie a brown paper bag to mock his poor upbringing and Carnegie sending Rockefeller an expensive bottle of whiskey knowing Rockefeller was a devout Baptist. It's just two egos trying to win a contest only they care about.

This particular issue of Scrooge was particularly remarkable. What a plot! Scrooge and Glomgold matched each others' fortunes into ridiculous detail. Finally it seemed their possesions came out EXACTLY EQUAL! Each of them possesed, like, 600 sentillion, 500 quacktillion, 900 obsquatamatillion dollars exactly! But it just so happened that since they were both string collectors, they could find out who was the richest by unrolling and measuring their string balls right across the heart of Africa! Barks really outdid himself on this masterpiece. It was an incredible and insane work of comic genius! It's the reason Carl Barks is widely respected as the greatest creator in his field! In BOTH the art AND the writing! And it was truly a labor of love, because Barks was outrageously underpaid by Disney, who took ALL the credit! As a child in the 1950's, I actually assumed Uncle Walt himself actually drew this stuff himself. I didnt understand that Disney was a corporate glomgold himself, who employed dozens of starving artists to sweat out all the actual work! 😮

Thank you so much for this video. It's an excellent analysis of Carl Barks' work boiled down into a single issue. I first read "The Second Richest Duck" probably in the late 1950s and it has remained one of my favorites, along with "The Land Beneath the Ground" in #13. Speaking as someone who has a complete collection of all of Carl Barks' comic book work, I really, REALLY enjoyed your video. You displayed a total understanding of Barks' comic book techniques. Thank you again!

Thank you so much - that is indeed high praise coming from a lifelong fan such as yourself. In some ways I find my experience similar to those who read these Disney comics when they were first coming out. Although I read them in reprints, these stories never had any creator credits on them, but I could always tell which stories were done by the 'good duck artist' ! 😁

Carl Barks' use of ancient myths and legends to weave the long adventure stories completely drew me in as a kid and filled me with wonder and a strong desire to research and read about history which has stayed with me my entire life. My favourite parts of Barks works are when the characters are alone and quietly reflecting. You get to read that inner monologue and it makes the ducks seem so real. Barks' ducks are not just one dimensional funny animals. They are true personalities, each with their different faults and strengths. They are not unrealistically perfect and it makes them so much more interesting and gives the stories twists and different places to go. People seem to look down on Disney comics but they seriously don't know what they are missing!

In Dennis O’Neill’s “The DC Comics Guide to Writing Comics”, he felt Barks’s plotting technique was worth mentioning, and it’s become the device I have become most comfortable in using, especially since you have to break it all all down to usually 22 pages.

@ftloc
@ftloc 3 года назад
Carl Barks is the 'OG', he created Scrooge and many other characters , and wrote brilliant stories for many decades. Don Rosa came to prominence after Barks had retired, but is seen as a true sucessor, who built on Barks' rich stories and expanded on them, while creating modern stories. Both are brilliant and I talk about them a bit in my Best Comics for Young Readers video The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck by Rosa is a 12 issue series that you can find not only in the two volume set, but also Volumes 4 and 5 of the Don Rosa library. Hope this helps!

This video is so good in so many levels that I feel I should stop making them myself...But focusing on Carl Barks is very much justifiable. He is - as you stated - one of the true greats, both in story telling and art. It is such a rare talent to be able to create stories that work both with adults and children. You make a very good - and important - point that while many childrens comics are boring there are these exceptions.

Thanks so much! Yes, there's really no one quite like Barks is there? I'm very envious of the gorgeous editions, as well as the lovely originals, the Duck stories see in Europe. Very few of them seem to be translated into English, and extremely expensive whenever they do become available here, unfortunately...

I see nothing wrong with Donald wrong with Donald wanting an ice cream soda . I’ve been reading Don Rosa collection vol.9. And Donald seems like a hard worker . So him wanting ice cream soda for a treat after a hard work seems fair . With scourge and glomgold makes think of Nero wolf and his orchids . And the pride he takes in his orchids .

I'm 2 years too late, but I completely agree! So called children's comics are still comics and some of the art is absolutely incredible and detailed. Great diatribe on your choice and remember, great art is great art, no matter the audience. I'd also add, when I was a kid, my family would go on vacation and I only brought or bought Disney and other kids comics like Ritchie Rich etc. Thing is, you'd get your monies worth, lots of stories, great art and you'd reread them consistently. Donald Duck and Scooge McDuck ( Uncle Scrooge) as drawn by Carl Barks are classics. Anyways, for the love of comics...Indeed!

You've got a subscriber just on the strength of having a video that gives due credit to Carl Barks. You might be interested to know that my father, an English professor who wrote books on literary criticism was quite traditional in many ways, including the idea that there was a meaningful distinction to be made between the products of popular media and great literature, absolutely loved Carl Barks. In fact, early on in their marriage, my mother believed my father was hiding a porn stash from her, when she noticed certain hidden boxes he had. When he was out, she did some snooping, only to discover that rather than adult magazines, my Dad was hiding a collection of Carl Barks comics! He had 'How to Read Donald Duck' in his vast library of books, but of course, he vigorously disagreed with its negative conclusions about Barks' works. Anyway, thanks for the great video!
