Rush legend Alex Lifeson talks about Gibson Custom’s new Alex Lifeson Double Neck EDS-1275. The guitar is a replica of Lifeson's own '70s Gibson Double Neck. Lifeson especially loves the way the guitar has been matched to his original complete with “all these little nicks and scratches and cracks in the finish just like the original has.” One of the scratches reminds of Alex of a rock and roll Rush tale….

Chris Watts; I agree tenfold! That man is who really inspired me to start taking guitar lessons a few years ago. I'm 62, retired, and finally have the time to learn to play the guitars I've bought over the past 40 years or so. Highly, HIGHLY underrated guitarist... the BEST in my opinion.

+A Keeper Of Odd Knowledge He is really underrated. He's my personal favorite guitarist, and even if those who've heard him do love him, he's still always put below more famous guitarists like Jimmy Page or Eddie Van Halen who IMO are just inferior guitarists. Alex has everything a guitarist needs to have. And honestly, I love hearing him talk too. If he were a comedian I think I'd love him the same.
@Lyka-clock
@Lyka-clock 8 лет назад
I think Alex touched on as many styles as Page with as much feel and a heck of a lot more technical ability. I love Page but wonder sometimes why people dismiss Alex so easy. It could be the progressive nature of the music. I know it's not for the general music fan.

When i was 21 and living in toronto canada i was on my way to work one morning on the 401 highway and was in a big 5 ton truck and there was an accident so traffic came to a halt and for a while maybe 25 min we all sat there and out to my right in a vintage brown jaguar convertable was alex and geddy. Being canadian you recognize these guys like you would myles goodwyn or brian adams and gordon downie. I rolled my window down and me and my boss had a full on 40 min or so conversation with them not once mentioning rush except to acknowledge who they were. So down to earth so nice so typically canadian. I even threw them a couple guitar picks with the name of my band on em. Not for p.r but just as a way of breaking bread with 2 legends of canadianna.

@Oneness100
@Oneness100 8 лет назад
But it costs more money in labor to put those scratches and nicks and other wear and tear. ;-) I'm not suggesting that they do it, but for some reason, people THINK that it's better. using aged wood would at least improve the tone, if done properly.
@rockdinosaur666
@rockdinosaur666 7 лет назад
You're completely right about the labour cost but wouldn't the average player (and who do you know that has a double neck) want a pristine guitar without this relic/vintage nonsense and save on that unnecessary labour? I would.

When I started to listen to Rush 40 years ago, my praise was focused primarily on Peart and Lee. I have grown to appreciate Alex so much more in the last 20 years and his role in Rush. In a 3 piece band, the guitar is so crucial in filling the mid range, soprano, background, rhythm, and melodic roles. He has so much more to fill than your average guitarist. Then you hear him solo on La Villa Strangiato and one realizes how important he was. He is a fantastic musician and one hilarious and genuine human being. I love this guy!

@megatop412
@megatop412 Год назад
Thought the exact same thing. His guitar work during the later years became more textual and complimentary rather than the straight-ahead blues rock they started off doing. Not to say you don't hear that vibrato after the 70's ended, but it didn't stand out as much as their arrangements became more complex. By the first time I saw them in 1990, that vibrato had already faded in prominence somewhat.

So many different styles along with acoustic and classical etc. He never took fancy short cuts like eddie vanhalen and his playing was more textured or intricate than most other heavy rock or metal guitarist. Bottom line he is THE most underrated guitarist in music and at least one of THE best guitarist. And to top it off he comes off like a humble and nice and funny guy who seems to have great values.

A couple of days later I went into a local guitar shop asking about a white Epiphone double neck and the first thing the guy said was “you went to see Rush the other night, yes?” Lol! Seems there was a shit load of guys in looking for one who’d all been at the Apollo! Epiphone must’ve sold a ton of those guitars off that Rush tour! I really wanted one but couldn’t afford it. The funny thing is tho’, about ten years later I tried a red Gibson 1275, like the Jimmy Page one, and it weighed a ton! I could only manage about 15 minutes and my back was killing me! It’s funny how cold, hard reality almost always tempers your dreams!

Not to put down Alex, but John McLaughlin was one of the pioneers in using the EDS-1275 as he used it in early '70's on Birds of Fire and their concerts until he received his custom made Rex Bogue guitar. So, he is actually probably the first guitar player to actually use a Gibson double neck throughout an entire live concert instead of just using it for a song or two. I think Gibson should come out with John McLaughlin models Double Neck and Les Paul as he used them as well. He is, after all one of the greatest guitar players that inspired even some of the most prolific players that studied his playing. He's probably one of the most underrated and under appreciated guitar players that actually did influence the rock industry more that just about anyone else other than Hendrix and he started the ground breaking Fusion era of music history. Even Alex was most likely influenced by McLaughlin on some level since a lot of the progressive rock guitarists were also listening to McLaughlin's work. I think John McLaughlin deserves some attention to his contribution to the music industry. If you go by how many notes played during his career, he certainly contributed a lot more than just about anyone else. :-)

@@akeeperofoddknowledge4956 Jimmy Page and John McLaughlin had one as well. No way Lifeson was first.
