You guys clearly don't follow the team. 😂 The last WC were mostly new young players. They just had a horrible coach. Oh and Alex and Megan sucked in it too.
@mikethomas860 emma hayes is building a team fir the world cup in 3 years, morgan will be 37/38, Hayes isn't a puppet, if she was the coach at the last World Cup I can guarantee megan rapinoe doesn't go. The last coach basically let the veterans pick the team just like the WNBA let their players pich their team. I mean the US women's basketball team is guaranteed to win gold and could have done it with one of the best rookie classes ever & no I am not just speaking about clark
I remember Jill took an 'old' 35 year old Ali Krieger to the 2019 World Cup where she mostly rode the bench until the second half of the final when Kelly O'Hara got injured. It felt so good to have a seasoned veteran available and ready to step in and get the job done.
That's Ali Krieger and not Alex Morgan though. She also won the NWSL championship last season at 39 years old because she still performed as a defender. Alex Morgan hasn't scored a goal for her club this season and she has averaged 2.3 goals per year for the USWNT for the past 3 years.
That's true, but this is the Olympics and there's just so few roster spots. Every player needs to be in great form and versatile. Unfortunately Morgan is neither one of those things. If it was a 23 woman squad, Alex probably makes it
This shows this crew does not watch the USWNT play! I don’t watch and I know Morgan does not contribute anything. She has been on the decline since the last Olympics. Props on Emma Hayes moving on from Morgan. Naeher should’ve been gone also
Clearly she is NOT ALL that says Hayes.... It's time she is replaced. Chance for other deserving players to go prove their worth. Let her sit at home enjoy the games with a home cooked meal.
emma hayes is doing what the last useless coach refused to do and that's bring in young players. The last coach basically let megan rapinoe pick the team.
Ronaldo literally throws fits when he gets subbed out in a meaningless 3rd group stage game (they already won the group), because he loses out on a chance to pad his stats. Alex was willing to take on a role player's role. She wasn't the featured player at the Gold Cup (Jaedyn was). But her demeanor was that she was happy to be a part of the winning team. There's a difference. Besides that, they just don't have room for her with only 18 roster spots.
Sucks, but I also get it. Hopefully she takes pride in knowing she has been mentoring Jadeyn Shaw and look at what all she's doing. Changing of the guard.
"Can she help you in big games- absolutely." When was the last time? Against England in the 2019 WWC Semis- last time I can think of. Outstanding player who will continue to have club success, but it's overdue.
The future is doing what the men are doing - going to Europe young. No college ball. The Europeans are now leveraging the institutional excellence in the men's game to benefit the Women and it's working. The best coaching methods, tactic, academies, trainers, doctors, pitches, stadiums. The title IX advantage is way past now. On the men's side, it was Pulisic, on the women's it was Horan. Leaders, examples. Before that, Tim Howard. The world of women's football is changing.
Carli Lloyd was right of course with her analysis during last year's World Cup. She criticized the tactics and culture of the team. The coach was subsequently fired soon after and several players have been subtracted and added to the team. Guess what, the team is playing better.
Let's hope the games go well but if things go south there will be no Alex there to calm things down. Emma is taking a huge risk IMO Horan is not the leader Alex is!
agree, if things go south people will look back on and wonder if this was the best decision to make. Having a bench player like Kruger, who doesn’t have that much of an impact fails in comparison having a player (Morgan) who on the bench still plays a role
Even if things don't go well, Letting go of Morgan was the right move. She was not performing. Keeping Morgan could very well be why things don't go well.
Alex Morgan knows that her game has dropped off and that she is no longer qualified to be on this roster. She was a great great player! Look at the last World Cup - Alex and several other veterans were not strong. Andonovsky built a flawed roster and it showed in the team’s poor performance! We finally have a top quality coach once again on the women’s side! Emma built a strong roster abd was not trying to rock the boat but trying to choose the best players. There are a few veterans on this roster who could have been ousted out. Lindsey Horan has not played well…..Emma gave her a break. We may not win gold but we do have a strong merit based roster!
Morgan should not be on the roster but definitely as an alternate. Her on field leadership and experience of international play should have been considered by Emma Hayes. Going with 5 forwards and no true #9 might cost the US especially if an injury to one or more of the 5 forwards occurs. I do think the US will go deep into the tournament, depending on how they can handle physicality, speed and talent of other teams Emma Hayes could have selected Morgan as an alternate instead of a third goalie, then have the option to insert her into roster. Granted a single player can rarely make the difference in the game of football. People are forgetting what an impact player Morgan can be on the world stage, even with recent lackluster performances. We will see if Hayes made the right choices.
I applaud Emma for her deletion of Morgan. As much as I love Alex, her halcyon days are long past. She was a massive failure at the 23 WC and the upcoming stars deserve their turn in the sun.
Alex Morgan was not ignored. The selection committee considered her well being as soccer mom and the opportunity to give the new generation. That is how Alex also started out, they gave her a chance when she was young. Another reason she was not offer any spots on the team is her tea celebration. In soccer there are 2 types of celebrations that are acceptable. The soccer celebration, and the non-soccer celebration. The celebration has to have physical moves like Ronaldo's, The Swedish striker his celebration was like Rugby end zone. And lets not forget Bolivian striker Moreno, his celebration was as if he was aiming with a bow. 1994 Bebeto celebrated that goal and his team mates joined the celebration. Soccer is not a sorority type of organization. Soccer is passion, and madness.
Ali krieger coming in hot and heavy. I agree with her 100%. Just because she’s having a rough year doesn’t mean she can’t come in and be a game changer. We’ve seen that in the gold cup, we’ve seen how she impacts a team. Big mistake & like the other gentleman said, understand the need for the growth of this program but the Olympics is here and now. Leaving a younger player off this roster like a Kruger and moving Dunn to a defender wouldn’t have hurt this roster. what does Kruger add that Morgan doesn’t
Thank heavens for Ali Krieger on this panel. She seems to be the only one that has a clue. How many goals does Alex Morgan have this year (0). How many goals does Sophia Smith have this season (10)? When the US team needs a goal late in a game it wouldn't be Alex Morgan that would get it for them.
What you blabbering armchair coaches forget is this ... Morgan did not have Mallory Swanson to feed her the ball at the last big dance bacause she was injured. Morgan was blowing by the defense but the lead pass was either LATE or NON EXISTENT. That is why she got a few offside calls. There is no one on this squad who is a better on goal striker and finisher. Mallory and Morgan would have been a lethal combo for this team. You know who's glad Morgan is out? Sweden, Netherlands, Germany etc. I predict Mallory will star. The kids will flop. And Dunn will pass more often to the other team. Thank you :-)
Yes (and this is why this argument is different than having a Caitlin Clark, and potentially Angel Reese, on the US women's basketball team. Morgan is the most well-known/marketable player on that team but women's soccer is now at a point where there's no room for legacy appointments. For the US women's basketball team, they're going to go undefeated and win gold regardless and so leaving Clark off the team is a missed opportunity.
There are still questions if Sophia Smith is good enough at the international level and she has 10 goals 6 assists this season in NWSL while Morgan is still stuck on 0 goals 1 assist. She's just not been in good form.
This narrative needs to go. Smith also has 4 goals and 2 assists for the national team so far this year plus 2 pks made. We don’t beat Canada in the gold cup without her play and she was MVP at SBC. A poor WWC also doesn’t take away the fact she was USWNT player of the year in 2022. She has performed well internationally. She’s just unfairly criticized for not having the same output as the NWSL.
@@candacelong7643 yeah I really like Smith to be clear. She's asked to play wide a lot for the US and that's not really her position. I think we need her in the middle.
@@jackied962 We need her primarily in the middle but she’s best when she can move across the frontline. Keeping her central an entire game just allows defenses to neutralize her. Moving her around is what has allowed her to thrive with the Thorns. Emma is already having her move around. Of her last three goals with the national team, two were from the wings, one central
Absolutely makes a statement that you have to be in-form to make the team and resting on past success is not going to cut it. Only Emma Hayes has the credibility to make a decision like this, other managers were probably scared of the blowback they would receive from sponsors and fans. This decision actually makes me feel confident that we are serious about fielding a contending team and not just picking the players the fans and media want.
Perhaps we can talk more now about Horan, the top US player male or female. Her resume is better than any US player on the planet, including Morgan. Two 90 minutes Champion's League finals, tropies galore, #10, Captaincy, and chosen first now by four of the top coaches in the world.
It's about time. Morgan hasn't been effective for years. If Hayes had dropped Rodman it would have been even better. Offense has been the weakest aspect of the WNT for a long time and Morgan and Rodman are the primary reason. It's way past time to move on from them. It the WNT had spent the past year developing new talent they would be in a much better position. Perhaps they would not have been beat by Mexico and lost so many other games. You can't win games without scoring goals and Morgan and Rodman do not score goals. I'll be surprised (pleasantly) if they make it out of the group stage at the Olympics. Germany and Australia have the potential to dominate the U.S. Hopefully the U.S. defense can keep them at bay, but unless the U.S. scores some goals, they are going home. If Morgan was really dedicated to what's best for the team she would have retired when she stopped being effective. A true leader knows when it's time to step aside. There are plenty of players who can provide the leadership to help the younger players (Dunn, Horan, Lavelle), not that many of them appear to need it. E.g. Shaw plays like she has years of experience at the international level. Smith, Sawnson and Macario are leaders themselves. All the team will miss from Morgan is not scoring goals and being offside.
Drop Rodman??!! Did you watch her play in either of the games vs. Korea? Their defenders couldn't handle her on the right wing at all. She's playing great right now.
Did Rodman dump you or something? This gotta be someone’s burner. You pile on her everywhere. Like putting her and Morgan in the same sentence is insane. They’re in different career trajectories. Her stock is going way up. Morgan’s not so much.
Agree 1000% on Morgan - past it for quite a while now. Should have stepped aside with some class, but she loves the sponsorship money too much. I agree that Rodman isn't nails yet, but not sure there's a better first choice. Other players will get that spot off the bench and they have a chance to prove themselves.
What is the big deal Alex is not Olympic roster, she was an amazing performer on her time but this time she is not good enough Amma did the right way but strongly disagreed with Lilly Yohannes, she is supposed to be on the roster .
It is not cool that Emma didn’t choose the best looking woman for this team. However USWNT player in general is so much better than the rest of the world with their talent and skill, Olympic should be a cakewalk and Gold is as easy as taking candy from the kids. Team like Spain. Germany, Japan and Netherland have NO chance. This one is in the bag.
"However USWNT player in general is so much better than the rest of the world with their talent and skill, Olympic should be a cakewalk and Gold is as easy as taking candy from the kids." That WAS true. Did you watch the last World Cup? lol
She is toxic and her age has nothing to do with it, she brings divisiveness to the locker room! Age is only an issue when you are over 80, like our presidential candidates from our 2 party system!
This is not surprising at all. Alex Morgan is past it. Too slow, can’t beat her first defender anymore, and can’t hold up play anymore. She should just enjoy the WSL as much as she can
At some point there is always a need to rejuvenate. So this is her time, everyone has their time and hers has passed or is passing. So no objections you need to grow your team.
What happened at the WC ? Too many old, unfit players on the team placed there based on their history. Let the kids play.... Morgan is well past it. How many of you guys have watched her play in the past several years ? She is horrid...
anyone who is upset about morgan getting dropped need to get real. Emma Hayes is building a team to win the next world cup, a 38 year old morgan isn't going to do that. it's just a fact. It's like people saying 39 year old Becky Saurerbrunn should still be getting picked. The problem is these us players don't know when to retire. Megan rapinoe being case and point, it just shows weakness when you don't drop them.
This is overdue. She's not scoring and is ALWAYS offsides because she can't outrun anyone and she knows it. I think she should have retired from the USWNT a year ago and had a nice sendoff. We could have given younger players important minutes.
Albert out, Staab in.. Dunn to midfield. Williams starts, Rodman alternate. Otherwise, it's a terrific roster. We have an excellent team but remember, so does Spain, and England, and Germany, and Sweden, etc. No cakewalk for any team. Should be an exciting tournament and loads of fun. Can't wait !!
Alex Morgan has to earn her place, Emma Hayes is not looking to win gold, if she does great, but her focus is on building the team to win the next world cup and a 37/38 year old alex morgan isnt going to be there
It will be okay. The sponsors will find another player to over-hype. Sports Illustrated will find another player to take their clothes off for money. LIfe will go on and Morgan's bank account is just fine.
