A 22-year-old construction manager served as one of the 12 jurors who found Alex Murdaugh guilty of murdering his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, after deliberating for less than three hours. James, who asked that his last name be withheld, spoke to the Law&Crime Network's Angenette Levy about the kennel video, how prayer played a role in the trial, whether Alex Murdaugh's testimony mattered, and more.
NOTE: James' brother is a Colleton County sheriff's deputy who responded to Moselle the night of the murders but was not involved in the investigation. James said both the state and the defense were aware of his brother's employment and approved of him being on the jury.

I've been on jury duty probably five times, and chosen to a jury twice. One thing that always impresses me is that everyone take it very seriously. You sit in judgement of a person's life, and when we found two defendants guilty, you can bet we did it because the case was proved and the law told us what we had to decide.

I didn't realize the jurors could not take notes during the trial. Did the judge (or anyone) give a reason for this directive? I didn't watch the trial -- only the closing arguments. I am a bit surprised that given that this was a 6 week televised trial, having a verdict so quickly means that none of the jurors purposely extended the deliberations for the purpose of writing a book as has happened and one might expect in such a highly publicized case. I really don't feel comfortable with jurors on any case not being able to take personal notes because we all have our own individual ways of remembering things and piecing them together. If there was a concern over a juror using his/her notes for nefarious reasons/financial gain, the notes/notebooks of the jurors could have been collected at the end of each day and locked up in the judge's chambers. I'm a note taker b/c it helps me to sort things out in my head, especially if there's a very specific timeline that is very relevant, esp in a legal case and must be used to determine a verdict. EDIT: I really want to know why the juror who was dismissed at the very end brought a dozen eggs with her?? Were they raw or cooked?

@B_Bodziak Год назад
@@GiftSparks She was dismissed for discussing the case before the trial was over and was not an alternate. Because she couldn't go back ito the area where the jurors keep their belongings while the other jurors were there, the judge said if she had anything in the room , the bailiff to retrieve it. The only thing she said that she wanted was "a dozen eggs" she'd brought. The look on the judge's face when he confirmed she wanted the bailiff to bring her eggs...?

He’s chosen to be chosen at random LOL. After that initial random call to be a potential jury member nothing else is random. Each potential juror is asked very concise and somewhat intimate questions that they must answer honestly. The first questions may weed out more than half of the jury pool with very basic questions, the further it goes the more intimate the questions become. Both prosecution and defense must agree on the chosen jurors as well.

@@richardlawson6787 Attending the courthouse when you are called is mandatory. Being chosen as one of 16 from 600 in the pool, is either good or bad luck, depending on the case. I was one of 16 out of 300 chosen to hear a trial of a young woman with an IQ of 72 (verified by the prosecutors' testing) who dumbly (see her IQ) spoke to cops without an attorney and admitted to knowing a cousin gave her a bag with coke in the lining. We did out duty, but I guarantee you we cried about her life.
@dougiesherwin9591
@dougiesherwin9591 Год назад
@Edward Your are correct. We watched video of her being Mirandized, and it was clear to me she had no idea what they were telling her. The officer said: You have the right to an attorney, and she said she didn't have one. He said: If you cannot afford one, one will be appointed for you, and she repeated that she didn't have one. If I had been her defense attorney, I would have pushed the jury to understand she was too slow to understand her rights. When she told them she knew about the drugs, she was trying to be honest. But sadly the law said that made her guilty. We cried when we found her guilty, and I believe her cousin was ultimately arrested as well.

I didn't look at this articulate young man as someone looking for clout, and if that wasn't what you meant to imply, I apologize, but I still think it needs to be said. I think that the jury has been widely criticized by many for their decision. My perception is that he's granted interviews to give the public a better understanding the jurors and their thought process. I think he's very effectively dispelling any notions that the jury was a vindictive group of individuals that had it out for the Murdaugh family, jealous of their wealth and power. He puts paid to the notion that this jury was a group I've poor, uneducated dirt farmers. I think it's unfortunate that I have to say that, but I have read comments by others on the pages of different creators who covered this trial. I found those comments offensive, personally. He leaves the impression that the jury took their job very seriously, listened to all of the evidence, and even prayed over their verdict, before coming to their final conclusions. What an incredible juror, so articulate and loved how he stayed neutral in observing all the reactions from the defense, the prosecution and the defendant til the end of trial and put it all together in his mind at that time. I would love to have a friend with this kind of state of mind. Very very likable person. Bravo James.

Okay let me edit my own thoughts - he isn’t just mature for a 22 year old, he’s mature for an adult human in general. This is someone who is very intelligent, self-aware, perceptive - he has so much going for him and I hope he has a long and happy life.

This made me cry for Paul and Maggie again, as I have several times during this trial. Alex probably did love them, but he loves HIMSELF more. The young man who spoke on this video, very intelligent, was very respectful, and di a great job, as did the other jurors! Thank you for your service

If I was ever to be a defendant, I would hope my jury would be filled by thoughtful, intelligent people such as this young man. It seems that he truly weighed the evidence and made thoughtful decisions about that which was presented to him.

They took 45 minutes to go over 6 weeks of testimony. They weren't thoughtful at all. They simply didn't like Murdough. There was very obvious reasonable doubt in this trial. The jury chose to ignore it. If I ever have the unfortunate chance of being a defendant in a criminal case I will take a bench trial over an ignorant jury any day.

The jurors thought about the case for 6 weeks I don’t think they can be judged “not thoughtful enough “ because they came back with a decision quickly. They were able to see the whole room and I’m sure the got much more information than we were able to from our limited perspective.

This young man is just 22 years old but he’s so mature and sensible for his age. Very coherent, alert, intelligent and his attention to detail are commendable qualities. Also his demeanor is calm and collected; his talk was well measured. Great upbringing there. He’s definitely got a great future ahead. I wish him the best. I’m an Indian who’s watched the entire trial here in India, so it’s really interesting to see how the judicial system works in the US. I’m so happy that justice was served in the end, all thanks to everyone’s hard work and efforts; but most importantly, thanks to Paul and Bubba ♥️

If every jury were comprised of jurors like this man, we could say that the justice system was performing like it was supposed to. He should be proud of himself, his family should be proud of themselves for raising such an outstanding young man, the company he works for should be grateful to have him as an employee and, the country would be in a much better place if its leaders used him as example of how to govern.

I am humbled listening to this young man. To be so thoughtful and fair, while listening to all the testimony, shows vast maturity. To be steady in his role as a juror makes me proud that our system of trial by jury is mostly fair. Thank you, James and Angenette, for a great interview. 👍🙏🏻👏🏼

I wish. Yes, this man is wise beyond his years. He is an awesome young man. But unfortunately, statistically speaking, of the other eleven jurors, around &6 of them had an IQ under 100. Some of them were probsbly technically considered “persons with intellectual disability”.
