Acclaimed Magnum photographer Alex Webb gives an Artist Talk on the release of his latest monograph, The Suffering of Light: Thirty Years of Photographs. This exquisite book is the first comprehensive monograph charting the career of the American photographer. The collection presents his most iconic images, many of which were taken in the far corners of the earth, and brings a fresh perspective to his extensive catalog.
Alex Webb‘s photographs have appeared in a wide range of publications, including the New York Times Magazine, Life, Stern, and National Geographic, and have been exhibited at the International Center of Photography, New York; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. He is a recipient of the Leica Medal of Excellence (2000) and the Premio Internacional de Fotografia Alcobendas (2009). Webb, a member of Magnum Photos since 1976, lives in New York City.

Thank you for such an illuminating talk! I've always admired Alex Webb's work and this is gold, to me.

I'm fascinated by how close Mr. Webb can get to his subjects without them looking at the camera. Some of the particular close ones I have to think aren't candid. I'd love to see him working on the street.

Too many photographers believe BW is the master way of photojournalism. We must embrace colour! Cave man painted in colours! Digital allows us all the controls of making images, ours! No better guide is Alex Webb and wife Rachel. Switch off the Auto colour and light balance! Seize the light and colours! Work simply, small camera and lenses. Be fluid and appreciative of your seeing. Bravo!
