In July 2021, the Morris-Jumel Mansion and the Alexander Hamilton Awareness Society hosted a free presentation by Dr. Tom Oller on the complicated relationship between Alexander Hamilton and James Madison. Madison, known as the "Father of the Constitution," worked closely with Alexander Hamilton to write The Federalist, a series of essays explaining and defending the new framework of government. However, after Hamilton became Treasury Secretary, Madison (and Jefferson) strongly opposed Hamilton’s ambitious financial programs, leading to the creation of the Federalist and Republican Parties. This pre-recorded talk will examine how their political thinking evolved, turning them from partners to bitter rivals.
Dr. Tom Oller is the Vice Chair of the Alexander Hamilton Awareness Society. Tom is also a senior lecturer in the Writing Program at Boston University, where he teaches a course titled, "Hamilton and Jefferson: Competing Visions of America." Previously, he taught at Harvard Extension School and at Harvard's Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning.
