I'm really glad that Thiem got through to his first Slam victory, even if the circumstances and uneven match quality were anything but optimal. If nothing else, Thiem amply demonstrated in this final that he's developing the mental strength to stand against any player. A VERY gutsy performance, if not one of his prettiest or most commanding. I was shocked when he went down 2 sets at the outset, and, as a fan, very nervous for his chances. I have seen nothing, in terms of post-match commentary or press, and this is one of those matches where I really have to wonder what might have been factoring into the play - on both sides, but particularly for Thiem. Injury? Just nerves? Regardless, he came through, and huge props to him!
He hurt his Achilles in the previous match and was obviously cramping close to the end. The cramps were probably brought on by nerves, he had a much tougher draw at the AO this year and was still pretty fit throughout the 5-set final.
Agree In the first set and a half Thiem was too slow in movement. I was watching the match and nearly hopeless. But kudos to him trying to get out of his worry about his body, pressure and everything and win the match. In 5th set tiebreak, he stepped up the game and managed the belief that he can win the match and he did. What an amazing final.
In the Austrian media he explained that it was purely nerves, not the injury. He didn't want to admit it before but Djokovic being out was a major factor for him getting more and more nervous towards the end of the tournament. Obviously, this could have been a now-or-never opportunity for him. I'm sure he'll be more relaxed and on better form in Grand Slam finals that are hopefully still to come.
@@clemensk.2643 Both physically and mentally really tough. He knew that most people will put pressure on him for winning the title without the big 3. I'm sure this title is a breaking through for him so now he's ready to conquer another slam. No need to hear about "no big 3" or whatever.
Thiem was down 2 sets and a break in the 3rd set, and how he miraculously turned around the match was amazing. He knew that if he didn't when this, he would have been 0-4 in grand slam finals, and if he would make another one, it most likely would have been against novak or rafa, and we all know who wins those matchups. I only hope that thiem keeps improving, because I know he has not reached his full potential, and when he does, he can win more grand slams. Even though zverev lost, he played well for the first 2 and a half sets, for his first grand slam final. Zverev needs to improve more physically and mentally, and if he does, then I feel he will have more chances to win grand slam titles.
He deserved the title after 3 lost GS-Finals Everytime I had tears in my eyes when I remembered Thiem winning moment and this was the most emotinally tennis final match in my life and I will never forget this night in my life
Many Austrian went to sleep after two sets. I was also deeply disappointed at this point, but I stayed awake and experienced one of the most exciting TV moments of my life.
I'm so done with some people keep saying that this final is bad because ofthe absence of the big 3. The big 3 this the big 3 that. Is it anyone's fault that Nole didn't make it to the final? Is it anyone's fault that Rafa & Rog not there? Nonsense people. I was watching the match at 4 am in the morning and it was really a thriller. I knew if Thiem could win the 3rd set then it would be him to be the winner. Even Thiem was not there in the first set and a half, but his eyes shown the belief that he could win the match. Thiem was a little worry about his physical condition so that's why his movement and his shots were just off at the beginning of the match. In the 3rd & 4th set he managed to free himself and not to worry about everything. In the final set he felt his body a bit painful but still managed to stay up there and produced great shots when needed to. He deserved it because of the never give up spirit and attitude from 2 sets down and a break, injury and nerves. In the end, i was so happy that i witnessed a memorable match like this.
Andrew Thank you! I do like Federer and Nadal but it gets boring when the Big 3 keep winning. I was actually happy to see Thiem win, because with his consistent performances against the Big 3, it was only a matter of time before he would win a major title. He never gave up and it paid off, and I believe he will keep going further from here with possibly more major title wins to come. I’m proud of Zverev for fighting hard as well.
The match was not bad because it was thrilling, but it had low level of tennis. But not because of the absence of Big3. It's because both players were extremely nervous and couldn't give their best performance.
I was so touched by his speech. Domi’s speech mentioning that there should have been two winners was very moving as well, because he knew Sascha deserved the trophy as much as he did.
IMO, I think Zverev will be like Cilic or Delpo. If the draw opens up for him, he'll have a shot at more GS titles, but I don't see him as a 'fighter' the way Thiem is. I think the next great rivalry is going to come from Thiem, Tsitsipas, Medvedev and FAA & Sinner in a few years. We'll see...
True, there is a big chance he playing at the same level on this tournament, and make let say only 4 round. In this tourney had some lucky that he couldnt finish to capitalize. If he had won that five set he would be the champion with more set lost in a tournament in history? I remember Gaudio (2004 FO) and Federe (2017 AO) both lost 7 sets through the entire tournament. Zverev was 8 after the fourth set. He is young but need some time and urgently needs to improve his second serve
The highlights that we are all waiting for. Hope that Zverev and Thiem can keep their consistency so that they can win more titles, especially when the Big 3 are still around.
Ich frag mich immer, ob andere Lichtenwörther wissen, wo er wohnt? Falls ja, sind denn dann alle respektvoll ihm und seiner Familie gegenüber? Und tauchen dort nicht dauernd auf mein ich damit 😊
At the post match interview Dominic said his emotions got the better of him. He was so nervous and he didn't know how to deal with it he was so uptight. Just so happy for him. Game. Set. And Match. Exactly.
this game had it all. bad second services, double faults, weak level of both in crucial moments, nerves, comeback, break points that later could not be revalidated, match points saved, the two served for the championship and could not win, first us open final that is defined in a tie break. great start to thiem vs zverev rivalry.
The occasion got to Zverev in the end; it was his first slam final and when he got close to achieving it, he started to play to not lose instead of playing to win, which let Thiem back in. Thiem did lift his game up but not by a huge amount. He was mentally more stable in the end though, since he had already been to 3 Finals. Pretty sure Zverev will learn from this loss and hope he will win a Slam in the near future since he has the potential to play some great tennis.
I am so happy to have seen this final, I was excited as I had not done it for a long time. Great finalists, they gave it their all until the last second. I think it was time for Thiem to win a Grand Slam, and I hope that in the future Zverev will also have the possibility
Thiem couldn’t realise that every time he sliced to Zverev’s forehand from the far left side of the court he was just getting punished by Zverev’s forehand down the line.. if Zverev played the same way and served the same way like the first two sets he would have probably taken the title. But serious credits to Thiem with being two sets down and trying to find the rhythm and his natural free power game and immense mental strength to get back up and at the end the physical strength needed to get past the line in tie break is just inspiring.. Multiple grand slam players right there.. cheers 🥂
One of the best matches I've ever watched. There were stages when the match could go either player's way. Was worth staying up to watch from Singapore. Glad that Domi won but Sascha will also get a GS one day.
Just randomly watching tennis games every time I get home from work and just realised how different games were without crowd crazy how we got used to the world with covid
Players with big style like Alexander Zverev. are overlooked as either having pace difficulty or too many double faults. He plays the game of tennis with excellence , for his age and number of titles and rank. This match is a testament to those facts.
I don’t see a weakness in his game. He’s definitely winning his next slam final (even if against roger Rafa or Novak). He has consistently played this level of tennis for over a year now
Rahul Dev I think he is hitting or is about to hit the peak of his career. Considering that he beat Nadal and how close he got to beating Djokovic at the Australian Open, I think he’s definitely been evolving his game over the past year. It’s definitely seen when he won Indian Wells, in that such an achievement at Masters 1000 level was probably a sign that a Grand Slam title was next. Djokovic even said in his winner’s speech at AO that Thiem would win several Grand Slam titles, so it’s clear that even the Big 3 know that he can go far. Winning the US Open will definitely lead to a boost of confidence for Thiem now that he achieved his one lifelong dream, and that could inspire him to beat the Big 3 at major tournaments on a more regular basis. It would definitely be exciting if he was to beat Nadal at RG.
@@rishbahpandey8697 I mean he could beat Rafa at RG in coming years. Domi was very burned out by the time RG came around due to a combination of fatigue, a tough draw and not much time to prepare for the transition to clay after the US Open. That’s probably why Rafa got such an easy run to the title this year, but he is showing his age and may not dominate as much as he used to. RG will be back to its usual slot in 2021, and Domi will likely be back to his usual dominant form, so I do think we’ll see an exciting new chapter in that rivalry unfold.
I like Theim and played well even when he was about to drop dead on the court but Sasha should have got this us open. Still more finesse and fighting spirit needed to reach slams.
I think Thiem's win here will give him the confidence he needs to win more Grand Slams and maybe even beat Djokovic and Nadal in GS finals (Nadal in RG final 2020?).
Dragan Agreed. I watched the AO final live and Domi was playing very well, having a 2-1 lead going into the fourth set. Had it not been for Nole’s miracle comeback, Domi would have easily won.
I think his mental strength will develop a lot from this win, considering how much he never gave up until the end to win his elusive first major title. It was his lifelong dream to win a Grand Slam, and now that he’s accomplished that, I think he knows that he can go further and win more titles to come. Winning Indian Wells was already a breakthrough for him at Masters level, so I’m sure the US Open will be an even bigger breakthrough for him, to know that he can do it.
This was a messy match, both facing pressure and internal struggle, but props to Thiem for lasting and lifting a well-deserved slam even with the Djokovic saga. As for zverev, he can hopefully build off this experience for better performances in big moments.
I don't know what injury everybody seems to think Thiem had. He hurt his foot/ankle against Medvedev, but it didn't appear to be bothering him at all in this match, and if we're talking about cramping, both of them were suffering towards the end. Great effort mentally to come back and win, but let's not pretend like it was a herculean physical feat for a guy that we already know is one of the fittest on tour.
Yeah He said he was 100% fit. It was his nerves and he was worried that despite having a great career, if he doesnt win this, he may not win a slam or have a chance. He would be 4-0 at GS finals. So he lowkey had Big 3 mentality level at the last 3 sets
He hurt his foot because of his shoes slipped. And that worried him, thinking it'd cost him the final. Imagine you're on your chance to win the GS, with some records were against you. If that were me, i'd want every bit of my days before final went smoothly. For example, in semis i'd like to beat my opponent 3-0, as quick as possible. USO final 2013, if i remember correctly, nadal had an easy semi win, while djokovic had a gruelling war against wawrinka. In final, djokovic lost because he was thought to be 'in a hurry' to finish the point.
Dominic Thiem is 7-2 against Big Three in the past 12 months: 3-0 vs Federer (W Indian Wells, Madrid, YEC) 2-1 vs Djokovic (W Roland Garros, YEC; L Madrid) 2-1 vs Nadal (W Barcelona, AusOpen; L Roland Garros)
After seeing this compilation I could see that the weak point and the great weapon at the same time of Thiem is his Backhand because if it works 100% he can beat any of the big3 as he did with Federer in Indian Wells and Nadal on quarter of finals at AO but if failed him like this final, he can lose a lot of titles like AO with Djokovich, I really think that he need to improving his backhand a little more, he is a very complete player I really have faith in this boy.
Is it just me or this should be the normal length of match highlights? You don’t give justice to a match of badminton, volleyball or tennis (sports that I watch) at only 10 minutes or below. 😅 But thanks for the upload 🙏
ya i still remember AO 2012, both djokovic and nadal were still firing rockets after 5 hours into the match. Thiem backhand is explosive but in a 5 set match, he tire himself out too quick
@@JasminGardenia That's true, especially for their recent h2h, thiem is actually on the upper hand. Dictate a point I mean take control, chipping the ball very often means directly hand over the control of the rally to the opponents. Thiem needs to reduce the amount of slice to go to the next level.
@@yuanhu7264 some say the slice is what made him overcome Medvedev in the semis. Perhaps against Zverev it was less effective. Against Rafa or Djokovic I have never seen Thiem play many slices.
Incredible!! Just incredible tennis from Them. It was a game of stamina and discipline in which Thiem beat Zverev. Moreover, Thiem overcome the opponent in net play.
