This is something you probably won't see any time soon. 4 top tennis players all playing with one-handed backhands in a doubles match! Amazing!

Prior to this match, Fed & Stan took out the Indian duo of Doubles specialists Leander Paes & Mahesh Bhupathi as well in Quarters. I remember being extremely heartbroken with that result as I was expecting Paes/Bhupathi to bring a medal for us. Goes to show that when the best of singles players team up, they can take out the top Doubles specialists. Much deserved Gold for Fed & Stan that year in Beijing 🥇🥇

God damn i would have want those cheap tickets to this masterpiece. One of the best matchup doubles u will ever get.

It's the Olympics. Favouring the 'Stars' goes completely against the Olympics ethos. They surely just need to draw lots - so court 2 is entirely appropriate.

@@jer8279 after years of amazing dominance, he contracted Epstein-Barr virus (Mononucleosis) at the beginning of 2008, and played over that illness. He lose badly the Australian Open semifinal against Djokovic, and continued to suffer unexpected losses in the subsequent months. Apart from the consequences of the illness, which are sometimes very serious and very long lasting (some players were forced to basically quit playing foreverafter mononucleosis, Federer was even comparatively lucky), he suffered a loss of confidence too, which was the main reason behind his very tentative first 2 sets vs Nadal in the Wimbledon final the same year, when he had to be considered reasonably healed from the illness. Despite his loss in the singles vs Blake, a player he was mostly used to dismantle with ease (this says a lot about how long can take to recover completely from a serious illness like mono), this doubles gold medal helped him in finding back his confidence, and for UsOpen, he was back at full force.

Apart from their high singles rankings - there are a few very good reasons why these two were able to push past the best specialist doubles team ever : 1 they both have premior single handed back hands - so they volley better than any double hander on that side especially;2 they both have top 5 best serves going ; Feds is crazy good ; 3 they both can rip the ball from both wings - handy in doubles 4 they move better than 99 % of others on tourer - put them both in any tournament in the world they would repeated ly win against the best
@bigrobsydney
@bigrobsydney 2 года назад
The grip on the single handed backhand is completely different to the volley grip. There is no direct correlation here. On the other hand, they volley well because they are world class tennis players.
@jesse9307

Patrick MacEnroe talks about this in his horribly written book. He said that everytime federer touched the ball it was either a winner or it have so much backspin it stuck to the ground.

The Bryan brothers certainly the most successful, but questionable whether they were the best. They played in an era when doubles was very much the poor relation of singles, and where very few players play both events. Mens doubles very debilitated as a result. The great doubles players of the past were often playing all three events. The fact they lost in two sets here to two players who rarely played doubles says quite a bit.

Nadal is the only player who comes close to Stans record - with wins over him at GS s ..... So thats why many know and admire Stan - hes a legend in my book

Because Stan the Man seems to be one of the few players for whom the court aside the player at the net never seems wide enough. It's understandable to play body shots sometimes, but I haven't seen him play any match without a couple of those. Some say it's fine, not me.
