Obviously don’t think he loved it there but OP says he never had a happy childhood with his comrades, assuming his whole life has been hard shit. Barb didn’t really affect me as much Bob made me a bit sad honestly, pretty hurt the first time tbh Billy ngl almost made me cry when I saw him stand up for Elevem Hopper did make me cry when he died but after some thought I realized there is a good chance he’s alive Alexei on the other hand, was the only side character I looked forward to seeing again next season, but NOPE, the Duffer brothers completely made my heart drop when he died and I was in total shock. That could mean a lot of things, but a main theory is that Hopper was sent to the Upside Down, when the portal blew up, just like Eleven in season one.
