It is back, I just watched an episode on That's TV (UK), They put it on after midnight I missed the beginning but I have no doubt there was a Warning beforehand and so many 🤬words bleeped out
I'm of British Caribbean background. Born and bred in London from 1964. We grew up on this and we loved it. My dad understood that it was possible to make fun of each other without it being hatred. That's the problem today. People don't understand that working class people of all races at that time proudly called themselves British. Things were not perfect, but in many ways, race relations has now gone backwards. My dad taught us assimilation, today parents practice and teach division.
@fpvDRE thank you. He was. He worked hard and taught us the importance of valuing people on the basis of their values, not their skin colour. I love being a continuation of his values, and those who share them, irrespective of race, are my brothers. .
Granted the humor was different back then, but these sitcoms were fucked up. It portrays blacks and South Asians are lesser or cultural aliens to the white man in Britain. If anything it perpetuated racism. I’m blessed to be living in this time than the 70s and 80s could only imagine what people of color went through in England.
Floyd1504 If someone has to result to racial stereotypes or talk about ethnicity to get laughs , then that is a lack of comedy in generational. I would rather talk about somebody’s character or integrity.
Floyd1504 and granted I’m not being biased towards I hate when comedians come up their and talk about race all of them Black, Brown, Yellow also. I don’t understand the humor in it and it’s not intelligent comedy either. Any moron on the street can make a joke about that material.
People say this is deep hatred racism etc, you say you loved Winston and I think if you look at the whole show even though Alf gave him a hard time deep down Alf loved him too.
Shane Joshua.....I am white and I hate how it disrespects anyone who isn't Male whites heterosexual and British. Sorry. That you are black doesnt add weight to those who explain how it is well meaning. I think it is raping society of its unity, it promotes intolerance is hate fuelled and vulgar. I suspect those who enjoy this show have poor income, are incapable of pleasuring their partners have very small genitalia. I hope God forgives you
@@ryanskeffers5286 "I hope God forgives you" And I hope God has better things to do than sit up in Heaven policing political correctness and every petty thing people laugh at.
Well said! I remember watching something once, where a White British soldier who was training a Black soldier said something along the lines of "Come on you Black b*stard, get a move on!" The soldier's reply went something like "I'm trying, you White b*stard!" No offence taken on either side! Like the 'F' word, its just used as a form of emphasis!...
Top notch, mate, i agree. The problem we have in the UK is white people getting offended on behalf of the minorities. (Who can speak for themselves, and don't need patronising)
A funny programme done in good humour with no malicious intent whatsoever. Nice to see that guy who played the shopkeeper again, he was a good comedic actor.
Brilliant so funny, imagine airing it on tv today 2020... be uproar 😂 instead we have to put up with crap reality shows like love island big brother X factor etc etc
In the UK, Indian = Asian, Yes 👍. If describing someone Chinese we tend to say "Oriental". Perhaps not everywhere but in my area if you say "Asian" folk assume you mean Indian (or that neck of the woods).
This was and still is absolute quality, This was a time when ALL of us could laugh together, I believe the vast majority still can, and why?,because there was never any malice toward anyone.
My brother and I loved this show. Our mother hated it. I can see it's probably dated now in terms of some of the stuff he came out with, and we probably don't want to normalise that level of overt bigotry, but it was funny social satire. A bit like the Northern Ireland show "Give My Head Peace", or Margary Doors on Little Britain These things can be an outlet for dealing with the taboos around prejudice, and I think laughing at bigots is often a really effective way to challenge them.
I'm 15 and I find this hilarious and I wish that either ITV3/4 or GOLD would show this, Love Thy Neighbor,Mind Your Language and Johnny Speights other sitcom Curry And Chips would be repeated in a Prime Time slot
I had the privilege of bumping into Warren Mitchell at Lower Edmonton whilst he was collecting for Children in Need. Having to endure hateful racism most my childhood it was a joy to find him so funny. Also Love Thy Neighbour was a classic.
Here was a black man and a brown man and a white man throwing racial slurs at each other and when they looked at the script they knew what they were doing. They were highlighting the ignorance of each other and laughing at those characters together. Pure comic real genius!
It highlights racism and belittles other cultures in the UK. This is not intelligent humor at all and usually appeals to people with low IQs or are narrow minded.
@@vijaydanushkodi4980 Was it ever pitched as "Intelligent Humour?" It is, however, humour! Maybe of its time, but it is still humour! I haven't taken an IQ test recently and I can be narrow minded - but primarily I enjoy a laugh. With me - or at me, I'm not that bothered...
I remember watching Alf garnett as a kid loved it you know they will never put this back on tv again for me this show was just as good as only fools and horses r.i.p legend
I used to work over in Battersea in the 80s and they filmed this series not far from Queenstown rd and during our lunchbreak, me and my workmates used to watch it on location. Warren Mitchell was a lovely bloke, very friendly. Great memories.
The actor is Renu Setna,He also been in 'Doctor Who' in the first episode of 'The Hand of Evil' and an Episode of 'Return Of The Saint' entitled 'Signal Stop'.
The days when we could laugh at ourselves, black and white. Racist was not a word we knew. All just such loveable characters. Timeless classics. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
@@neothegsd7292 all characters were using casual racism, winston called alf bueno and whitey and the shopkeeper gungadin, shopkeeper called winston sambo and alf called everybody. and alf always ended up.looking stupid and was laughed at not with. you obviously missed the point of the show which was to highlight racism, bigotry and ignorance.
Of course jine if you have done proper research into this show. It was the work of genius Johnny Speight who used irony to highlight blatant racism and was ground breaking comedy at the time.
I was bullied at school both physically and mentally. Scottish, all white. My parents always taught me not to get involved with fisty cuffs and learn how to fight with my mouth! I'm 60+ still with my own teeth and a straight nose! This video is a fantastic example of how proper people, who perhaps didn't have the artulacy of a judge, sorted things out! Nowadays, people like me have been deprived of all our ammunition and I can't believe that even when a serious situation is being defused, through verbal communication and humour, some fucking fanny is able to waste police time because they've been offended by the language used to? perhaps stop a murder. Offence is taken too 'conveniently' these days! In the days before the strangulation of free speech, there was a poem that my Dad used to recite as he beat me (That is an impromptu, and probably not funny joke to some folk), but not entirely untrue. Sticks and stones will break my bones, but word's will never hurt me. There are TOO MANY folk in this country take offence at what should really be classed as fuck all. Great video. MY GOODNESS!! Just realised! Nobody had to whiten down to play a bigoted, racist, engl/British, misogynistic old fart!! That's done somebody out of ammunition! X
@sw72UK The differences among the races is not just skin deep, some orientals have just as pale skin as northern Europeans and still don't look like them. Stop trying to be a do-gooder and acknowledge the differences you numbty.
What a revelation it is to read so many people of different origins back grounds and so on, appreciate not only good old fashioned comedy but to also recognise that TV was better then, than it is now!
@@ianbennett1491 and where is this loony left? sending refugees to Rwanda, sending retired brits who have worked hard for the NHS "back" to Jamaica. think you've been brainwashed mate.
I think it's more each side is fed up of the other side's comedy as it's based on ridicule and exaggerated stereotyping. It's really immature, like our brainwashed parents and grandparents - willing subjects of The Empire / Commonwealth... Mass invasion ruined everything on the race/culture relations and integration front. Polarisation and social division ensued, as was easily predicted. and now Libs are as racist and sexist as old Cons, hating on white straight males and white 'TERFS' mainly.. Anti-racism and anti-sexism quickly turned into racism and sexism.
Sabu sad at silly Mo not paying the bill . Absolutely comedy brilliance. Tell me any comedy that is better than this today . Sabu complaining she died on a Wednesday. Brilliant.
Racism? The program is all about laughing at Racism and Bigotry hence why Alf is the but of all the jokes. The whole point of these two series was make fun of such backwards small minded mindset.
An absolute gem from a much lamented bygone era of comedy. The very best ...please come back Alf, this country needs your political wisdom more than ever now.
It was supposed to be satire, the writers and the actors certainly knew, but unfortunately the majority of the audience and viewers of the time took it at face value.
castiger1000 Happy place to live??? It was so happy that you could discriminate against someone because of their skin color or commit a hate crime. You fucking dumbass this isn’t comedy it’s belittling humans. I would like sitcoms more about life or character rather than pinpointing race and feeding off of cultural stereotypes.
@@vijaydanushkodi4980 The makers of this show did far more to combat racism than the likes of you ever will. They made the character of Alf Garnet a figure of fun for the views he holds. They were mocking racism and racists and making them look ridiculous. That's far more effective and much more freedom loving than trying to silence people like people like you try to do today.
@@vijaydanushkodi4980 - giving all the bollocks 'Happy place to live.. I bet you wasnt even growing up in 70s England with a childish comment like that
You should really examine the state of race relations in those days before making silly comments. Only white people think it was better. Or try to pretend it was so they can bring back the old racist days.
Fine Actor. 'Lord of War' particularly good film. His roles are all serious now, but Marigold and his role in 'One foot in the Algarve' , shows a great talent for comedy. Wish he'd do more
@bobby macdiarmid Yes! Yes a snowflake to call my very own , dancing on the breathlike breeze as a fairytale ballerina on a frigid stage...touching my hand and then she's gone.......FRIGID INDEED!
@Max Hart I'm probably one then but this show was a send-up of the ignorant white working class. Warren was a socialist and a Jew. The writers were Socialists too. I was never offended by it. I'm aware of other people's feelings and don't feel I can steamroller views across. Debate on subjects like this is healthy without the need to label someone as a snowflake.
I can remember watching this when I was really young and thinking that Guy was camper than a Van. It didn't go over my head at all even though I was very Young.
I’m Indian and found these so funny when growing up 70’s 80’s even now. That’s how people were talking in those days. So the sitcoms reflected the sign of the times.
Pure class, this humour should not have been stopped. This is what breaks social barriers between races and makes us all friends you would never find this on TV in the 21st century. It's a shame because please bring back great Britain! All colours all races combined together to get along and laugh.
“John John”.... superb old days comedy ! Laughing is the tonic we all need. This was never about racism, it was about how we could laugh at each other !
This is brilliant and anyone who thinks its racist are small minded idiots - the world is too politically correct these days, no doubt they will be trying to take this down next
@@jkue9240 Of course it is funny - it's a joke. Brit.s laugh at themselves and expect other people to as well. Alf Garnett was a complete joke, an exaggeration... so is 'banana boat'. Lighten up and stop talking about white and black as though it is all about skin colour. It is not. It is about life. No-one is forcing you to watch or to try and understand Brits (who are of course, mostly white don't you know!).
There not meny of us left who us this sense of humour now. People don't realise this was alll over the world apart from usa and a faw others but in one room you have 3 Reaces Jamaica India and a brit. Comes to show how sad this new generation is if we put this on TV now or amazon people would say this is racist and it be all over the news the soft people have spoken getting offensive. I will watch and I will let me kids what it like my dad did to me and I'm british 😀
Lovely to hear comments that reflect the comedy and the way the characters work together, it's just comedy at its best, comedy is comedy, it's not demeaning, each character gives as good as they get, why have times changed so much where the laughter has gone
Me and me old grandad (god rest his soul) would be in stitches watching this down the local with a couple of pints of London pride. We watched it on our iPhones in the late 80s and said we knew comedy would never be the same after covid. He was black and I was Indian but both born to English parents in London. Nothing wrong with comedy like this, it’s golden: shame no one can have a laugh any more.
Used to love watching "In Sickness and In Health." Winston was a real favourite in our house and he was one of the first black people I saw on TV along with legends like Lenny Henry and Floella Benjamin . I'm not old enough to remember Til Death Us Do Part but I never saw Alf Garnet as much of a hero. More like a grumpy angry old man. Can't say the same for actor Warren Mitchell though. He's more like a comedy hero for bringing us a comedy monster like Alf Garnet to laugh at.
Good comedy is timeless. Warren Michell and Eamonn Walker were brilliant together and such a shame Eamonn Walker left at the half way stage. With deaths, illness and actors leaving it’s a testament to Johnny Speight’s writing that he managed to maintain the quality.
At 64 I rolled in my chair out standing comedy then and now!! I could play this and make a lot of people from different cultures all laugh what have we become 🇬🇧🏴☠️
