Yes, this really was the type of conversation from a million London working class terrace houses where the young ones continued to live with their parents and in laws in the 1960s and 70s. Alf is a very real character to me.. I met him in one form or other everyday of my childhood.
Brilliant, loved Till Death Us Do Part.....sadly all four are not with us anymore but leave us with this classic sitcom to watch, thankyou to you all !!
I had the pleasure of working with this amazing man Whenever anyone said anything about him taking the mickey out of the other races, his response was "It isn't them I'm taking the mickey out of" Loved the man, very gentle, caring and incredibly funny Warren Mitchell
Have you seen The Vikings. Dandy Nichols starring along side Kirk Douglas, Tony Curtis, Janet Leigh, Ernest Borgnine, and James Donald. Crazy to think she had starred with screen legends like those, and then later become the character of Alf Garnets wife in a TV series. She is very funny though. 😁
@@rmstitanic8163 I'm sure if you check out Warren Mitchell's career you'll find he had cameos with leading stars of the day, he appeared in a science fiction film with the American actor Forrest Tucker the Trollenberg Terror, which is just one of many appearances he made in films, also check out Diana Dors from sex symbol in the 40s and 50s to matriarch mother symbol in Queenie's Castle etc, you'll be amazed with who they started out with to how they ended up, even Harry H Corbett of Steptoe and Son fame appeared in films with big names one of them titled Floods of Fear with Howerd Keel,
When I watched this as a child I was always sorry for Else and what she had to put up with. Watching it now I see she was the one getting the better of Alf.
@wanderer1955 Dandy Nicolls managed one series of in sickness and in health before she died. You could tell her health was deteriorating though she was so frail bless her.
Bloody brilliant. I was laughing all the way through. What the hell has happened to our world where this type of comedy is frowned upon and banned. Don't even attempt to tell me the world is a better place without it.
Its all gone to PC shit....just like this country.....be careful tho....we arn't allowed freedom of speech anymore ....what would alf think of it now.....god bless him......love this Show...👏
How marvellous to see this, how we all laughed in the 70s, we are all fair game in comedy as long as it is not in bad taste, I don't think anyone was insulted here, it was the humour of the period, we could all be young, old ,mother-in-laws, tyrannical father in laws, white, black, other ethnic origins ,working class (I am ) and here, The Queen Mum, with a very good sense of humour invited to laugh with ground breaking comedy and from leading writers of the day. Times have changed.
EXACTLY ... Alf was always given the run round / out witted by hiswife / daughter / and new wife ... This is one of the best thought out, funniest, series to ever be broadcast ........ As English as roast beef or Darts and Snooker,,,, Warren Mitchel is an acting genius
@@Smithjones12All in the Family is often regarded in the United States as one of the greatest television series in history. (Wikipedia) Why was it dreadful?
I saw warren Mitchell at a cabaret in Australia in about 1974. He came on as Alf garnet in the first half and then as himself after the break. Very funny guy.
Alf Garnett mentions Philip in the navy. He was my fathers immediate officer on HMS Kent until it came under attack in march 1942 at Malta when 128 men were killed, including the captain, by a bombs dropped by JU 88's whilst unloading a merchant ship. My father was crippled for life.
Always love Alf Garnett his always going to make you laugh and smile love this takin the ____love his wife too yep like your old grandad but are grandads still like this crazy but so people say oh them days them days never forgotten
This is real comedy where they talk like real people do. so called comedies today like my family and others I cant even name dont compare to this. I love this show and In Sickness and in health later on
"Those were the days my friend. I thought they'd never end!" Sorry Mary Hopkins but the establishment murdered that line! Dandy Nichols was a British Institution as Alf's silly old moo! The perfect foil!
I got to see Warren Mitchell doing Alf Garnett in the '90s. He was as great as ever. I don't think even this older material is offensive, he's laughing at the people who think like Alf.
@@markharrison2544 It isn't shown now because it isn't 'politically correct' but I would argue that rather than encourage racism, it obviously mocked people who think like 'Alf'. We are laughing at him and his ridiculous rants and opinions. He's an idiot and anyone who is racist because of watching him is a moron.
@@rexterrocks Most people who watched the series did so because they loved the racism and fully agreed with Alf's views. Black children were abused at school by their peers who quoted the evil filth in this sick series.
@@markharrison2544 You are right that kids in particular, along with some idiot adults do copy things they hear but that shows how stupid they are. If you watch 'Til Death do us part', Alf is always an idiot. He's inept and is obviously stupid. I think anyone who thinks anything Alf says is credible and copies it must be an idiot. He's a joke and the programme is meant to show that his opinions are ridiculous. In the last series, he got a home help who turned out to be black and gay.I thought it was hilarious. I would never call this programme sick. Its obviously anti-racist.
They were the good old old days, bit of good old BRITISH HUMOUR , I remember Mary Whitehouse banning Chuck Berry 's song my Dingaling . These days kids of 5 years old swear more than Alf Garnett ever did , now you can't even smack a child , I was smacked by my parents and caned at school , it didn't do me any harm . It made me what I am today respect for the elderly and the disabled people .
You Brits still do the best comedy in the world, I'm lucky being an Aussie , I get the lot of it, just no one comparable to the Poms when a laugh is needed. Love it.
I wonder if Caroline Aherne watched this and said to herself, "I have an idea, I'll make a show about a family, and their surname is Royle , and I'll call it "The Royle Family".
0:45 - Watch Warren's eyes after he said this line here, with the reaction from the audience. He was thinking how the Queen Mother would react to that line, as she was present at this performance.
Tony Booth became Tony Blair’s father-in-law 8 years after this. Cherie would’ve been 18 in 1972, but Booth had left the family 10 years before. She first met Blair 4 years after this Royal Variety show. The Queen Mother died 30 years after this and the Queen died 50 years after. 50 years!
2:10 - Notice how after Dandy Nichols says her line here the is a long pause before Tony Booth starts his line. It is either Dandy had another line to say and forgot it or Tony forgot his line and was dying to think of it and got it after a few seconds.
Live performances can stress even the most experienced actor. That awful moment when your mind goes temporarily blank or a fellow-performer fluffs the cue line.
