Alfa Romeo Giulia QV | Road Atlanta | Chin Track Days | New Setup | 2 Second Faster Lap Time

Lap 11 is the fastest lap. Bested my best lap time ( • Alfa Romeo Giulia QV |... ) of 1:40 by 2 seconds.
This session is originally 35min long, but I cut it down to the faster laps. Each lap of the session was faster and faster thanks to my new suspension setup.
The Giulia Quadrifoglio doesn't have any frontal camber adjustability from the factory. Some negative camber is much needed if you want to track the car, and I finally found a resource in O'Connell Car Development.
Jay O'Connell is a race engineer. He designs and builds race cars for the likes of Turner Motorsports/BMW and recently won Mid-Ohio and 6hrs of Glen. He's the real-deal!
He modified my factory FUCAs so that I could adjust my camber. Now I'm running -3.9* frontal camber with 17mm spacers up front and a square factory 10" Alfa Romeo Tecnicos with 285 CUP2s.
What a tremendous difference! So much more grip that I've exposed other weaknesses in the suspension, namely my KW ST springs and the factory suspension ECU tuning. I've just replaced the suspension ECU with that of the Giulia GTA.
I'll report back once I've had a track day with it installed.

@@FredroStarr12 Thanks! I'm GOT to get back to the track. I've made some changes to the car AND I've been practicing Road Atlanta in my new SIM RIG with a Giulia spec'd like mine. Aiming for October... If not November. Stay tuned. I'm sure I can run 1:30s now.

Ha! Thanks! The new frontal camber adjustments and the wide, square setup made a world of difference. This past weekend I installed the Giulia GTAm suspension ECU. What a difference in the dynamic dampening!! Can't wait to get back out on track with this additional modification.

Thanks! And, you're right. I've been considering doing more than just using GPS data. May be time to invest in some actual OBDII data overlays.

2 seconds faster with the minor suspension adjustments. I can't wait for my next track event now that I'm running the GTAm suspension ECU. And if I also have my new, custom track springs by then...

Thanks, Tom! That means a lot coming from you. I can't wait to get back out on track. Since this video, I've upgraded to the Squadra Massimo tune and the GTAm suspension ECU. Now I'm just waiting on my custom track springs from @alfissimointernational . The spring rates will be 12kg/mm front and 14kg/mm rear. Much stiffer than these soft KW ST sport springs I'm currently running.

Thanks! I have more work taking place. I do a little at a time to see how my times improve. This time, simply adding negative frontal camber and 285 tires up front shaved 2sec. Now I have the GTAm suspension ECU which makes a world of difference. That plus a tune will be my next test. After that I move on to aero, then weight reduction. Stay tuned

Thanks! Yeah... car is undergoing serious transformations now. This is already a dedicated track car that /can/ be driven on the street, but not for long. I'm aiming to build a 155 v6 Ti DTM /Tributo/ 😄 Stripped interior Cage 5pt Harness Wide body (flares) Wider track Tune Exhaust Track-specific springs (higher rate) Wind Tunnel-aided Aero design (front and rear)

Are you going to the BMW Club event August 26th? I'll look for you. Shouldn't be hard to spot. I have 2018 QV yellow calipers, Centerline exhaust, Ideal Race tune, with GMS camber, caster kit. Advan 008R tires, carbotech brakes.

Thanks! Wait until my track-springs are ready and I get to do another weekend with them AND the new GTAm suspension ECU that I installed this weekend. As for the tires, believe it or not, according to my race engineer, I could get another track weekend out of them. They don't look that way to me, but I trust his judgement.

Hey! Thanks! My car is a 2017. As for what I think about the GTAm suspension ECU, I haven't experienced it on track yet, but here's my impression of it on Giulia Forums. Great circuit would love to drive my QV here. Super fast and flowing. What break set up do you have and what tyres are you running? Excellent driving.

Thanks. Yeah, Road Atlanta is my "home" track in the sense it's the closest track to me (4hrs). I have the CCM brake option on my QV, but I put the carbon ceramics on the shelf and use the Girodisc CCM replacements instead. They weigh a little more, but they cost much less to replace! As for my tires, I'm running 285/30/19 Michelin CUP2s on all four corners. Being able to run 285s up front is what has immediately shaved 2sec of my lap times.

What camera set up do you have that keeps the camera stable? I used a phone mount on my Giulia on the windshield and even on the back of my sparco carbon fiber seat but the camera shakes on both and I can’t get a good vid. Looking at your video compared to the one I took it’s night and day difference and I’d love to be able to get good track day video.

I use the Joby locking arm and suction cup for the front. Joby doesn't really sell the locking arm anymore, but you can get it as part of this kit on Amazon ( a.co/d/ca8wgSi ). I also can't find the suction cup separately anymore, but you can get it in this kit ( a.co/d/bIUPPSo ). For the rear-view camera I simply use a GoPro bracket stuck to the rear shelf. My cameras are the older GoPro Hero 5 Black models.

Silver car? GT3. I was gaining slowly. This is a short clip of a 40min session. Later on in the day, as the ambient temps got near 90⁰ F, he was killing it! No gaining on him then. I have more work taking place. I do a little at a time to see how my times improve. This time, simply adding negative frontal camber and 285 tires up front shaved 2sec. @@samthing4thetrack806 still running the Raybestos ST43 and Girodisc rotors and I love them. With the new wider track and square setup braking is way more stable. I want to get my custom track springs and run another event with that and my Giulia GTAm suspension ECU first. Then I may go for my red group checkout drive.

Would you recommend 285s over 295s?

Do you mean for a square setup? If so, yes, I recommend no wider than 285 up front. The 285s were difficult enough to clear for track duty. As a matter of fact, on the first track day with this setup, I rubbed through the body harness that monitors steering angle and brake pad wear. I repaired it at the track and then rerouted the harness so that it doesn't get rubbed by the topside of the tire anymore. So i couldn't imagine trying to run 295s up front without a widebody conversion, which is eventually where I'm headed. I do suppose however, that a higher spring rate could allow for 295s up front. Had it not been for how soft my KW ST springs are, I doubt the tire would ever bump-travel enough to rub that harness. I actually have some custom track-specific springs in development with the help of O'Donnell Car Development and Alfissimo. Soon I'll be running 12kg/mm rates up front and 14kg/mm rates in the rear. These will be very stiff... Not for the street, but great for the track. Stay tuned, and thanks for the question/comments!

OK, I thought this was about rear tyres😬 I'm replacing the tyres on my Giulia Quadrifoglio (not a track car) this fall and have seen some opting for 295 in the rear instead of 285, so I was wondering if that's a good idea. BTW, I see you're running KW springs, personally I think the standard suspension of the car feels rather soft so I've ordered the KW DDC kit. I hope this gives better control and more feel of the road.

@@kasimirdenhertog3516 Haha! I thought you were inquiring about my track setup which is 285s on all four corners. If you simply want to know about 295s on the rear... that's absolutely doable. As a matter of fact, when I still drove this car on public roads, I ran a staggered 255/35/19 front and 295/30/19 rear. No issues at all running 295s in the rear and 255s up front.
