Love these ever since a neighbour bought a 1.7 Cloverleaf in the late 80's. A real shame that they suffer the Alfasud tinworm infestation and there aren't more around. Respect to the owner for saving a lovely little car.

Brilliant that this is being saved. My first Alfa was a 1.5 Sprint Green Cloverleaf - rust was a nightmare but I had the best fun in it, what a fun car to drive, and it looked fab, especially once I'd restored it. Mine was piano black - I always planned to get another but they are very rare now. I hope the owner gets this one restored and has many hours of fun driving it.

My mom had a nasty accident in her 1980 Sprint Veloce 1.5 when the tire blew up. When you showed those dates on the tires it brought bad those bad memories. I hope the owner changes those tires ASAP!

Hi Neil , I thought you might be puzzled by the odd spring on the front . Essentially the new red one is actually off a new old stock set I bought online but they were for a earlier model with inboard brakes, I did know this at the time . Trying to get a proper new set is proving difficult at the moment. Ian from Sudshop is looking into getting some for me. To get the red ones to fit I had to cut a coil off to get to the correct ride height as the inboard springs are taller . By cutting the spring though it’s no longer sitting square on the spring pan. Before it came up to you I wasn’t happy with how the one on the off side was sitting so I threw the old one back on temporarily to transport it . Hopefully I’ll have a proper new set soon to go on . Thanks for all your hard work . It’s definitely a work in progress at the moment and I try and get various stuff done on my days off .

But I wanted a project to play around with and I’ve had fun so far and that’s all that matters to me . I just want to have a bit of fun with it first before I strip it all back . @@mattbettany1174 I had a few Suds and they are sublime on the road. The early 1.3 TI's used to just grip and grip and hang on. Engine loved to rev. Steering lovely. I like the 70's interior. Has some Giulia 105 DNA here and there in my eyes. Or of the time at least.. Good luck with it. It's never going to a condition 1 for the anoraks to masturbate over. If it's reliable and solid/tidy enough then get the thing as together as you can or are prepared to do and enjoy it. At least you have outboard front discs!!!

Hello Neil, this Sprint video brought back old memories for me. Back in 1983 I bought of the last of the original Sprint 1.5 veloces to be manufactured. The one shown here with the changes to the plastic bits was the following model. The red Sprint I owned had been Dinitrol rustproofed by the Alfa importer in the UK before being placed on sale. Most exciting car I ever owned. Kept it for eight years. But reliability wasn't perfect ... lots of niggles all the time I owned it.

@@KenFingerlove Probably the same time I owned my Veloce which was also dinatol treated. My Sprint was rusting after I few years. I kept it for 8 years because my mileage was very low.

You say it has starting problems. I've owned two of these and the trick I found on a stone cold engine like this was: (1) don't touch the cold-starter (2) dab the pedal twice to squirt petrol in from the accelerator pumps in the carbs (3) take your foot away from the pedal, that allows the the butterflies to close fully and act like a choke. (4) turn it over (5) the moment it fires, gently dab the pedal again to squirt in more rich mixture. Do no more than dabbing because if you open the butterflies it will lean off the mixture and stall. (6) keep gently tickling the pedal until it settles down to an even idle. With this method I could get mine to start first time, even in minus -10°C. With a hot engine they suffer from vapour lock. Gently depress the pedal fully to open the butterflies fully, turn it over and keep it churning until the squirt of rich mixture from the accelerator pump has blown through, then it'll fire, release the pedal. I hope this one can be saved. Love the videos 👍

Great content, keep up the good work mate. I used to own a 1.7 boxer qv but ended up selling to someone in Holland when the prices started to hike. Can't say I miss the patchwork it had. I do miss the sound of that double Weber carburetted 8v engine though.

A chap in college with me had one of these bought for him brand new from his father after passing his driving test back in 1988.- I was well jealous! 7 years later my mate picked up the exact car from a trader after swapping it for a Mk1 Honda Prelude and even back then in the mid 90s it had the common issues of rot around the scuttle and below the rear side windows bubbling up and had seen a lot of paint. A wonderful car to drive though and such fun.- this example is well worth saving - it exists for starters - most examples weren't so lucky. This car isn't wearing it's original wheels though - the originality nerd in me would prefer it on the factory spec 33 style 1.7 alloys. I'm not sure what the panel situation is like for these but it deserves a proper restoration sooner rather than later.

I found the way to start the carb flat four was..no choke, one press of the throttle pedal, turn the key and try and catch it on the throttle. That's the only way we could get a colleagues 33 1.5 started.

My first car was a 1.3 Sprint - A91HEA. Did collect a lot of the panels to fix it but it was too far gone . Still love the boxer engined cars. Sprint was a lovely car, and the 33 P4 I had was great (just treat the throttle as a switch!).

I owned E189CUF. 1.5 Green Cloverleaf in red. Bought as a spares or repair for £500. Ran it til one night thieves broke into it to steal a pushbike that was in the back wrecking the tailgate and rear panel really badly. Didn't seem worth repairing at the time. I'd love to see it again, fully restored. Great car.

Well, in wormer climetes the sprints are known to be bucketts of filler. In this one can not imagine what will remain after a trip to the blasters... Thank you for finally having the great Boxer in the workshop!!!

As much as I love these, this car is well beyond saving unless serious money is thrown at it. Shame, but I hope it gets saved. I grew up on this era of Alfa with my elder brother. They were knackered back then, and one of his Sprint Cloverleafs was rusting at 6 months old. My other brother and I still keep some Alfas including a pair of 164 Cloverleafs and a 75 3.0 V6 Veloce but the 80’s stuff is a real labour of love. Last year we had two Alfetta GTV6’s on the drive trying to make a good car. I was stripping trim in the rusty one and as I was in the rear footwell the floor gave way beneath me. Utterly rotten. Shame, but that’s old Alfas.

I had a red cloverleaf sprint. Put a 1.7 8 valve Alfa 33 engine in it with twin Dellorto carbs. Went round corners like it was on rails. Sold it for £350 after it failed the MOT. The whole rear end rusted through and I couldn't afford to get it fixed up at the time. Always regret having to part with it. I borrowed some cash and bought a 147 Ducati Corsa and have had several Aflas since then including a 159 Veloce, a Giulietta QV 235 BHP and now run a Mito 1.4 QV with lowered springs, short shifter, sports exhaust and remapped to 203 BHP. It may not outrun modern hot hatches but who cares? its an Alfa..

I had the same in Sweden. Left hand drive. Had green stripes. And red to also . Very hard at the time to get an exhaust system . Had to spot weld the holes . Engine slightly over heated . In traffic

a highschool mate and i drove one of these to school, parts are nightmare to get a hold of. if its working its a stellar car to drive, the gearbox is a bit notchy.

When full resto time comes around, that body and chassis are going to be like taking apart a jigsaw puzzle. To do this properly is going to be tens of thousands.

Just wonder how they will deal with the dozens of patch repairs ?, cut them out and butt weld in steel then grind flush so it's invisible (which can be done but it's an art), a full bare shell resto could easily run to 60-70K, fair play and good luck to the owner though.

I once bought a 67 Hillman Imp van which was pretty much a patchwork quilt underneath, plates were welded onto plates then smeared with seam sealer and underseal, it was far too much for me to deal with so i sold it to a guy who cut the whole floor from another Imp saloon and welded it into the van, was a shame to sacrifice a solid Imp saloon but Vans are far more rare. Also, i had a Mk4 Escort years ago, ex-rally car that had been converted to rear wheel drive, (like a Gartrac) the amount of welding in that was unbelievable, was all fabrication though.

I restored a 1984 white Green Cloverleaf in 1995. I don't own it now, life got in the way, but it sold it in 2014 for £4k. It sold at auction a few years later for £12k! Wish I'd kept it now!

I too restored a 1984 green cloverleaf, in the 90’s Was my daily driver till 2000, had to weld/replace the inner wings, middle and outer sills, front bulkhead under the battery parts of the floor and rear arches. Made a big mistake when I lowered the suspension. Fitted Koni adjustable dampers though so it stuck to the road like glue. Also got the last ever rear axle from the factory. Mangoletsi were my life saver for parts at the time. It and the 1981 Giulietta taught me how to weld and mechanics!

Had a 1980 Sprint Veloce in 1982 , great car , when it drove , a cloud in the sky meant taking plugs out and heating under grill . As for rust , well it was white , bad mistake .still loved though . Bit of an S/ M relationship .

Christ that's rough. It wants putting back to the original black, but getting the shell nice again will be a lot of work - cutting all the patches out for a start. An F plate Sprint should have plastic front arch liners. I had lots of these back in the eighties and nineties. The last two were C240GGK, a red 1.5 Sprint Green Cloverleaf and B203FBL, a metallic light green Sprint 1.3 (1351 twin carb).

Did same. I put the 1.7 engine from an Alfa 33 in my sprint Green cloverleaf. Loved that car bit it dissolved around me and I sold it for £350 to an enthusiastic youth who wanted to do it up. Dont think he ever did anything with it though. It was only the paint holding the rear end together...

Shame that they had some bad repairs done, awful body repairs done It needs a sand blast, that will be scary to see the result and lots of new panels, some can be bought, not many and many have to be done by hand. Great car. The start will not surprise me he couldn't find the proper spark plugs and put some random ones. I had a 33 MK1 1.3 and i sold it with a big stock of Golden Lodge spark plugs, never thought they will be worth so much nowadays hahaha

Loved the Alfasud. The boxer engine is so underrated when compared with the Busso V6 and Biabero ( twin cam ) from the 1950s - early 1990s . Lovely rasp to exhaust, cracking throttle response. Had a Sprint Veloce Speciale’ , which was run out model on 95bhp and the original specification 70s series tyres, before they moved on to the later tweaked 105bhp model and lower profile tyres., such as this model which being later still was based on the 33 model with outboard discs in front and drums at rear. Early models , like mine had discs all round , being inboard at the front. Although , I had her from 1988 -1994. , getting the engine rebuilt , and having her re sprayed , I had chassis twist issues , possibly been in accident prior my ownership, which progressively became worse as time went on.. such a shame as I loved her immensely but later traded her in for a 75 Twin Spark.

I'd say this one is beyond economic repair. Trouble is you can't get the panels anymore. It's a parts car. Find a better one with a more complete body, of you can. I got away lightly with mine, it only needed rear arches and front wings. The front wheel arch liners from the 89 models are worth retro fitting to protect inside the front wings.

ASA bit of an expert on these, I am not sure it’s got the right engine. That would have been a 1.7 with 118bhp, and a power to weight ratio close to an original Lotus Elise 😳I think the cam covers look like a 1.5 to me. I could be wrong. I will forward the video to our Facebook group, because it’s always good to see one being saved. 😀😀😀😀

@@mattbettany1174 this should be one of the last 1.7s. They hadn’t fitted a1.5 since 2 years before. The 1.7s had very ugly cylinder heads, and were torque steer like you wouldn’t believe. I think it’s better off a 1.5 😂 wheels are from a 1.5 as well. Without seeing the seats, I think they are 1.5 as well. It is possible this was forgotten by Alfa Romeo GB, and is, a 1.5, but 2 years late to be registered? 😳 I’ll see what all the members on .Facebook have said. I am more a Sud expert. But it’s still a fascinating project 😀

@@howardlake6178 so I bought this car off Chris Davis the Alfanut on RU-vid. I didn’t realise it was him at first until I noticed he was in Devon. He bought it and then realised it needed loads doing so quickly shifted it on. I suspect the previous owner before him made it look as best as he could to get a good price. It allegedly came from a collection of Alfas . I do have photos of it under going quite substantial bear metal body repairs but alas nothing to the chassis. I think they probably decided it was too much effort to carry on . I really just wanted it as a pet project to tinker and play around on . I’ll even use it to go the short trip to work once it’s road legal. It really needs a full resto as you can see . I might get Retropower to turn it into a 6C ! That would be fun and expensive 😅

No don't do are your unhelpfull self so there is no point asking you any questions about a year ago I had no experience on alfa and wanted to know the best way to remove it any body would think I wanted your bank account details you totally refused to give me any advise luckally I befriended a alfa romeo master technician his name is Leno in west yorkshir the most helpful man I have ever met he told me every thing I ever wanted to know along with work shop diagrams so I hope your knowledge is power serves you well and one day somebody may not give you any simple info so good look I thought you posts were excellent and still do it's just your attitude to people in the trade 😊

I would lay it up in a weather proof environment until the restoration is undertaken. Not sure why you would waste time and money on it now as it will just be another patch job and it will only continue to deteriorate if still driven in its 'repaired" state.

Looks a nail but ive got a,25 yr old fiat thats had its fair share of welding. Its,always subjective to the owner and how much they just love the car evem if to an outsider its a cash cow.....his full resto in 2 yrs will cost an absolute fortune.

These were terrible for rust needed welding for first mot.on the alfasud which these were based on I can just see a money pit to do total resto on that I can see £££££ if all the rust is going to be eliminated only way is start from.scratch or be chasing rust forever

That' shells rotten its going cost the owner thousands of thousands pounds to restore. Once he delves in deep he will find more horrors. The welding over the years is shocking workmanship . Your welding puts rest to shame. someone should of stripped the underside of the car. done proper job from day one when they done the paint work bodywork my dad drove one of these in 1983. He tolde it was starting to rot wasn't a old car at the time

The owner is running tyres that are 25years old🥴? Really? How does this get through the mot? Just from that observation, the owner doesn’t really care about his Alfa😢.

The new owner (Me) is doing a lot of work and spending a lot of money on something he dearly loves . I’ve only owned it a few months and I’m slowly getting it ready to be back on the road . Rest assured it will have a new set of everything once I’m done . So no tears required 😁

Prob fiats alfas msde after 1990 ..were better body wise .. but stll had tin worm ..70 s 80 s italian cars ..even italisn procesessed steel ..wasnt much better ...thsn esst european steel..

Italian disaster pieces. Well if someone wants to save it good luck and better have deep pockets. Harry Metcalfes Lancia Fulvia Zagato is now better than new and cost a fortune. They sure did uncover some horrific previous work and bodge-ups.
