He was in a bad place in every possible way. Amazing that he fully recovered, physically, mentally and financially. His career arc has been the most amazing of all.
Poor Alice; he looks frail, fragile, and on the verge of death here. You can see his heart beating and he seems winded just speaking. Glad he made it through.
@@wmbrown6 Through it all, it's amazing how lucid and humorous Alice still is (in this interview)...impressed at how he's always in on his own joke, and not trying to "put over" a contrived character with never cracking a smile. Bet he even won over some grandparents in the audience initially turned off by his visage! He even made Tom laugh, who was a good sport in giving Alice some support.
At this point in time, Alice was not ONLY addicted to Alcohol, but he was heavily into Free - Basing Cocaine. And during this period in time, Cocaine was running RAMPANT not just in the Musicians and band circles, but with the General Populace as well. But this was MAINLY in California as the state was being FLOODED with the stuff. Of course I'm not forgetting about Florida and New York as THEY TOO were being under that utterly addictive yet oh so wonderful drug. The Cocaine wars of Florida is legendary as it was tearing apart THAT STATE. I was living in San Diego throughout most of the 80's and I too was a heavy partyer. Me and ALL my friends in the restaurant biz were doing lots of the stuff. But we did other drugs as well and not JUST Coke. Once Crystal Meth hit the state, it pretty much equalled and then took over as the most obtainable and desireable drug over Coke. San Diego was full of the stuff and El Cajon (A part of San Diego) became the Crystal Meth Capitol of THE ENTIRE WORLD. That was where == EVERYBODY == was setting up clandestined LABS and making that shit BY THE TON. You could always tell who was making it by how they LOOKED. You would see someone out on the streets that looked to be in their late thirties to mid forties as they looked SO AGED. They looked so frail and shrunken in. But the SAD THING about them was that they were usually ONLY in their . . == EARLY TO MID TWENTIES ==. . They would be up FOR DAYS upon end as they were making AND USING it. I am just glad that Alice was able to stop. He is my Musical Idol. I by the way, am 61 years old now and no longer do the things I used to. I no longer live in California and am just fine over here in Kentucky. Alice survived it. I survived it.
@@rayjingloryproductions3770 Good on you for seeing the light, Ray! I lived in L.A. from '80-'93, and remember a lot of cocaine usage, including my brother, who had moved there from Houston a couple years prior. I wasn't interested, so I have no personal stories. I always knew (saw at least his "Killer" tour, and maybe one or two others) he was way into alcohol, which would have bloated him up, if nothing else. I had no idea he was so into coke, which would certainly explain his gaunt look here! Really scary...wonder how long he looked like this!
Well he eventually got his teeth fixed up a bit. He stopped his heavy drinking and coke use and straightened his life out...... It is pretty crazy that alot of ppl do look much better in the 2000s- and 2020's than they did in the 80's or 90's. The dorky huge glasses that were popular ( Or just the way they were made) in the 80's and 90's did not help peoples looks. I think a good amount of the reasons are changes in fashion and style. Of course in the 80's and 90's at the time the styles were cutting edge and popular. Even though hair was crazy big and curly clothes were sort of boxy and lose fitting with clashing colors and clothes that didn't enhance ppl attributes. 90's was a dress down era with big shirts and baggy jeans. These days things are more form fitting and accentuate body parts and hair is more natural styles. Curly hair is not what people strive for unless its natural curls. Straight long hair for women is popular. and more form fitting clothes. Dental product such as whitening systems and toothpastes among other stuff have come along way.
very impressive how he kept all his humor even though you could clearly tell he's in a very bad condition. It's great to see that he recoverd from these bed times.
Good lord he looks terrible here. If this had been five years later people might have thought he had AIDS after watching Rock Hudson go from normal to super gaunt like this right before his death. Sad times. Coke is a hell of a drug if you can afford large quantities of it. The Special Forces album is one of my favorites from Alice Cooper.
Completely coked up at this stage of his career... yet still able to carry on a totally intelligent conversation. Same thing during his extreme alcoholism. Fully functional. Amazing.
saw him shopping one day in the 90s at the swap shop ( flea market ) in fort lauderdale fl. i said hey vince , how ya doin ? he smiled and we chatted for 5 minutes . real nice guy !
Actually, she ditched him around this time, filing for divorce and going home to Chicago. I mean, who can blame her, the guy was killing himself on crack right in from of both her and their daughter, and she did came back to him and supported him during his recovery.
I saw somewhere where Groucho Marx went backstage, shook his hand, and thanked him for bringing Vaudeville back and Alice said he got it what we are doing on stage, he gets it.
@@natashanyxx9486 He said he was in the "Super Dooper Alice Cooper" documentary, Dennis Dunaway's book has a story too, they meet him when he was in NYC to tape this show and a tooth fell out when they were talking to him.
Alive was 31 years old in 1981 but that are just 4 years more to live but I am also glad that he is clean now and still alive with 73....Ouu,I missed his birthday on the 4th of februrary🎸🎆
Alice Cooper is the nicest celebrity I ever met. Real cool, awesome personality ,very much a gentleman. Glad he got past this time in his life and is doing GREAT! We love you Alice!!!!!!!!!!!!
I met him at the Memphis, TN show on 09-27-2022. He couldn't have been more kind. I brought a pen so he could sign my arm, but as a Covid precaution, the venue wouldn't allow it. He apologized to me and said, "If you want, you can leave your arm backstage and I'll sign it later!" The legendary Alice Cooper told me a dad joke. I can die happy.
One thing can be said about Alice Cooper: Even during the darkest times in his personal life, he always had an amazing sense of humor & continued to deliver amazing music. God bless him.
@@AngryHybridApe I never saw Alice live but I saw many bands like The Stones,Debbie Harry,Reggae Bands, german bands live.I'm glad that he survived 1981🎸👍
@@danielaschwarz1971 His concerts are more theatrical than others. Lots of visuals. It's kinda like the Vandals. They consider their shows a "show" because its more than just a band playing music. Audience participation, corny games and stuff. Never boring.
Finally, a much higher quality upload! I find this to be the most fascinating stage of Cooper's career and it's fascinating to see the physical evidence that he's struggling...yet he manages to be so articulate and engaging.
Alcohol had him by the balls. A lot of people don't understand because alcohol is so accessible unlike heroin, crack, coke amphetamines.ect...ALCOHOL IS JUST AS DEADLY AS THE OTHERS.. Glad you made it out Alice...
Oh my gosh, I’ve never seen this! Alice looked like he was going through a pretty rough time for sure and I’m glad he made it through that phase. I love the guy!
One of the most memorable moments I have experienced at a concert was the guillotine bit during his Billion Dollar Babies tour. After he lost his head the executioner retrieved it and was carrying it up the steps held high by the hair. There were so many flashbulbs going off that he was stobing, or it could have been the acid.
At least the guy did retrieve the head, as opposed on the Gong Show. Chuck Barris almost messed up the whole thing and you can see it here in this collection of comedy moments featuring Alice: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qx79fSkuqf4.html
@@derwolfenbaron3014 But you claimed it as well when you declared him living "proof" . the only thing proven is his overcoming addictions. That a god had anything to do with it hasnt been proven in the slightest
I am a huge Alice Cooper fan, and I liked his stuff even when I was a kid, (I was almost 10 when he showed up on the Muppet Show in 1978 and I really took notice); but it’s painful seeing him at this point in his life. I’m glad he came out of it. Think of all the amazing music we’ve had from him since that we wouldn’t have had if he had continued down the path he was on then.
@@benjaminbreeg9838 Teenage Lament is a GREAT ballad. Alice has a SHIT - LOAD of ballads. Way more than I am going to list. I love just about ALL of them. I just remembered --- Hard Hearted Alice.
I saw him on the FlushThe Fashion Tour. It was 1980. Ft. Worth TX. Billy Squier opened the show. The big hit from that album was Clones (We're all). He was rail thin and looked very similar to this with more of a punk rock vibe.
@@Pellefication ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0uJXZdaD3NY.html sorry you are wrong. Super Duper Alice Cooper he is very forward on his drug use.
When I saw this footage on a Alice documentary I couldn't believe my eyes. He looks like he's been caning the crystal meth for years. The living dead. Amazing he got out of it and is now in his 70s. I hope I make it to 70. Better start going to the gym 😆
Tom Snyder had some really cool guests, his show really could have been on prime time. His style was very reminiscent of Dinah Shore, who also had Alice and Vincent Price on together. I missed this one. Thanks for sharing.
You're giving him way too much credit. Read Hunter Thompson. The hippie scene was killed by its own utopianism. It could have never sustained the weight of its idealism.
Next year, 2024, Alice will have been performing for 60 years! And he's been married to the same woman since 1976. He's a lot more than what he appears to be.
I loved Alice Cooper since I was a kid cranking out the Schools out album.I was worried about him at this time.He got healthy and returned to Rock and Roll greatness.I give thanks for that.An amazing man and an inspiration.⭐
We just loved Alice Cooper's visuals and music + the Thriller music video so much, we tried to do our own little Horror/Rock video with Full Moon. Great photographer shot it with dancers and the all deal. I would love your views on it if you get the time ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fz0484priyA.html
I read somewhere that Jim Morrison got a lyric for 'Roadhouse Blues' from a phone convo and he asked Alice what he was up to? Alice replied "Well, I woke up this morning and I got myself a beer!" Looking at this interview seems like he did that every morning!?! Lol Love Alice and his music! Saw him live and he and his band were awesome!Glad he made it thru it, still going today! Legend ...
Cant believe this is Alice Cooper. When i saw the thumbnail i assumed it was the host. Very shocked to find out it was indeed him. Glad he got back on track. Hes a legend and puts on 1 hell of a live show
Like most people are saying as it's been common knowledge for some time: He was a major Coke/Base head all thru the early eighties as he thought he could stop his alcoholism by switching to cocaine no less! Went into rehab for his alcohol addiction in the late '70's, and even made an album about his experiences (From the Inside) then started doing cocaine like a feind. Saw the "Flush the Fashion ('80) and Special Forces ('81) tours in Florida and he looked just like this. Took him more than several years to get clean but finally did after almost dying - had to be hospitalized. True Legend & Survivor. Respect! 🤘🙌
These days I live down the street from Alice (Vince) and occasionally join him for a few holes of golf here in Arizona, outside of Phoenix. He's a very interesting and super polite guy. Very mellow.
Thank the Lord this man survived his darkest days. His face is sunken in so badly he looks on the verge of death. He looked like this for official video of Generation Landslide and I was horrified. I love Alice and seen him in concert many times. He invented shock rock and his shows were nothing less because he’s a crafty performer in that regard. I still have Goes to Hell 33LP. My Mom gave it to me for Christmas when I was 8 years old! What an epic icon Alice is. He’s is the Coolest and I Never Cry when I Gotta Dance to Wish You Were Here. Just hope I don’t Go To Hell cause I’m just a Generation Landslide!
Cooper was never as good as he was with the band that brought him/them fame. It was the band's disparate style of writing songs that got people's attention. Cooper then abandoned the band to go solo at the height of their fame. IMO, a very low-class move. People in my circles stopped listening to him after he left AC. Then Cooper started passing himself off as some kind of metal guru, but the music was weak sauce and he was never as strong as he was with AC the band and people no longer cared.
Thank God he cleaned himself up, he was in bad shape, close to death, in his own words to be exact. Seen him with my son with motley crue, awesome show. Thank you Alice 😊
He's talking so quickly here and his speech is slurred. Amazing how bad he got when on drugs in the early 80's. The alcohol in the 70's didn't affect his speech in his 1970's interviews. It also didn't affect his body weight.
