People should ease off Duvall. No one expected him to be like Staley. Guy's good and he has balls to even take on the job that used to belong to a true legend!
DuVall really does a great job. Everyone is unique. Layne was unique. you can't replace someone when they die. That's what death is. Still, DuVall really has shown himself to be one of the best after joining AIC.
Everone expected AIC to pull a AC/DC and get a vocalist who would mimic Layne. If you want an Layne copycat go see an AIC cover band. This is the REAL AIC!
Duvall definitely sounds like Layne, not exactly but you can definitely hear the similarities. When I first heard Check My Brain I thought it was Layne.
I think what differs DuVall's voice from Staley's is how unlike than Layne Staley's voice which is heterogeneous or distinguishable when mixed with Jerry Cantrell's voice, DuVall's voice is more homogeneous when mixed with Cantrell.
+KoolAidAlex I agree completely. I was just listening to The Devil put Dinosaurs Here today. WHile it's super fricking heavy and I enjoy it, DuVall's vocals just don't stand out against Jerry
That’s a very great explanation. Man, Layne and Jerry connected/were synergetic, so amazing in their vocals. Listening to isolated vocal tracks from MITB or Would show their amazing vocals.
Long time AIC fan and for me their newer stuff is really top quality. Also Duvall is a perfect fit. Of course Layne will always be unique but I really don't think they could get a better singer to carry on.
I don't think talent difference is a factor. Sure Layne is a one of a kind talent, but one could argue that the real appeal to him is his raw emotion and intensity of his singing. Especially on the songs he wrote about his own life experiences, like this one. Duvall is a great vocal talent, but you can't replicate the personal emotions behind those songs, but I think its good that those songs live on.
Duval does an amazing job. I'm sure there were times where he felt like I'm just a guy replacing Layne Staley. But became the driving force keeping the band together
I think Layne did a lot of things better but DuVall does him justice i’ll give him that. I have mad respect for DuVall because he knew full well when he joined the band that people were going to hate him and he still went through with it and it really worked out.
I’m just gonna come out with this: Duvall is not Staley, but he at least keeps the band sounding somewhat the same. Blink 182 choosing Matt skiba was an example of changing a bands sound dramatically as skiba doesn’t even begin to resemble delonge.
@ Murf why do you think this is , is he somewhat unsure of deval , honesty I like him and he is good but somehow not singing the way Layne did is kinds getting to me a little even though I want Will to succeed
I really liked the comment that William will never be able to sing Layne's songs with the same kind of pain and emotion because these songs are about Layne's struggles and Angry Chair was entirely written by Layne (both lyrics and music). But I also like one of the comments I read that William should not sing Layne's songs. I totally agree
IMO, they're not A.I.C though. When 50% of the band is gone, just change the name like Face-lift or Angry Chair. It's like PanterA playing without Dime and Vinnie. Nothing wrong with it, it's just not Alice anymore. Duvall is an awesome frontman for sure no doubt but it's a different dynamic
While you're busy hating on William, remember that without him Alice would have died right along with Layne... William got them moving again, has a great voice, and brings the second guitar to the stage. I think he's a badass.
Alice In Chains is the best band ever, but with amazing Layne and because of incredibly talented Layne. I cannot listen to these songs with the new singer. To me, this new AIC is just a totally different band
I absolutely agree! This is a joke without beautiful, so very talented Layne. And this new guy sounds horrible. He ruined such an amazing song written by Layne. At least they should not sing the songs wonderful, sweet Layne used to sing
How do you "spite" coffee? That's interesting. I know you can spit it, but I guess there are new things I never heard of that are being revealed as we speak ;-)
