The entire history of Christianity is riddled with wars and conquest, first the cleansing of pagan cultures and eventually wars between Christian nations, escalating after the Lutheran reformation. Christianity was used to justify slaughtering native Americans and the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, and segregation in the south. These are all uncontroversial and well-documented facts. Just because today's church is kinder doesn't erase the thousands of years of religious violence.

I think they mean that to have greater understanding of life then one must take a look at all the material we humans have created and discern it with an objective view and also with a moral perspective. To only look at everything through a narrow lens is to disable one's understanding of life. Everything we think we know now is really a fragment of the superunknown. Still I think its best to look at all aspects of reality and sort through them with with logic but also seek to keep the moral compass intact lest we become heartless robots. I hope this makes sense it makes sense to me anyway.
