William DuVall doesn’t deserve any of the crap he gets. He’s not trying to replace or be Layne, he’s just another guitarist/singer who AIC thought would be good for their band. As amazing as Layne was, William is doing a good job paying tribute.
Jerry Cantrel has always been the heart of Alice In Chains, this song just proves it, his vocals are haunting, Layne is missed, but Jerry still carries on.
@@sanzen1234 He sang lead on a LOT of older songs- "Brother", "Got Me Wrong", "Would?", "No Excuses", "Don't Follow", "Heaven Beside You", "Over Now", and more.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame does not deserve Alice In Chains.. The Rock And Roll Hall of Fame is a complete FRAUD.... Deserving bands are being passed over for BULLSHIT RAP STARS... The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is complete GARBAGE!!!
@@adamlawrence8433 ...agreed. Anymore, rock musicians should be demanding their name not be added to the ballot. Going back to the mid-80's, there were acts inducted that WERE NOT ROCK AND ROLL. Let nominate Nugent/Aerosmith/Zeppelin/REO/Styx/Boston, etc for the R&B or Country Music HOF and see how that goes over. Just like the girls that want to be in Boy Scouts even though there is such as thing as the Girl Scouts. Its a f**ked up world we live in.
Thank you Alice in Chains for not rolling over and dying because you lost a main member. You restocked and moved on and just as good as the 90's. Yeah, people miss Layne, but the show must go on............
@@yosoywilson78 Only because you were used to Layne. I bet if William DuVall was the original singer and died and was replaced by Layne, you'd say "nobody could ever be William" .....
@@ignaciocuello3929 I disagree. Here we can hear: Em, Gmaj, Dmaj and Cmaj. In nutshell it is Cm9, Gmaj, Dmaj. Rhythmically they are total different ,but yes the chords are a little similar
William does a phenomenal job. No he's not Layne, he's not trying to be. Give the man some respect . AIC new stuff sounds so very authentic and I love it. Lyrics and all. 🤘
I think he is saying no one plans on taking the path that brings you lower, not (nowhere) it actually makes more sense that he says lower. Smart line but maybe too forgiving. Some people don't care.
I miss Layne too but damn... the man died... what they hell are they supposed to do? It took me a while to warm up to Alice in Chains without him but the music is good so just sit back and enjoy!
X allthatremains I get what you mean but I wish they’d used a new band name and leave Alice in chains as a legendary band. And I think it’s because Alice without Layne is very different to Alice with William there will always be a conflict here.
This song literally saved my life. December 14, 2017. Love every chord, every note, every single second of this song resonates to my soul. Unreal what music can do to a person.
I’ll just never forget the first time I heard Layne belting it out when the Man in the Box video came out back in like 92 was it? I was hooked from then on & they STILL rock.
@Jerry Cantrell you shouldnt be impersonating someone your not you gave yourself away by saying I bet your surprised to hear from me...I dont think jerry has that big of an ego...later
I will always love and miss Layne but Jerry did the right thing keeping this band alive because the stuff they put out since William joined the band has been GREAT. Black Gives Way To Blue is a fuckin great album. AiC lives on just like AC/DC did after Bon Scott died.
Jerry's solo albums are sheer brilliant as well. I think it's not special AiC magic, it's just Jerry's talent what we love. But having full AiC around is sure better then not to)
Black Gives Way 2 Blue is an Amazing song he wrote 4 Layne.. I hope Jerry always sings it. I would hope William NEVER sings it. It is from Jerry to Layne..
Love the Lyrics in this song, the first verse always hits me hard. "Time to change has come and gone. Watched your fears become your God. It's your decision."
I love that part too. It seems to be about the way the industry chews people up & spits them out. Been seeing more videos about how the Hollywood elite crowd is really a depraved soul-sucking death cult. Robin Martyr goes in depth about this stuff in his videos.
Any band that can endure the loss of someone like Layne - and still thrive and put out great music - is simply amazing. (no offense to VH but they were never the same after DLR)
I kinda like how he kept AIC going. The legacy of Layne has definitely inspired Jerry too keep writing. Jerry wrote most of the songs, as is. Duvall is a fine muse for Jerry and AIC.
I like how Jerry decided to change their sound and style instead of trying to replace Layne. That way those who preferred them in the 90's won't get as angry since you can say they're moving on instead of trying to replicate him
I think their sound has evolved.....and the vocals changed because obvious reasons but the harmonies are still there. Rainier Fog breaks into my top 3 AiC records....
people need to relax when bands change their sound. Big deal. When something sounds the same all the time, it gets boring. You want to hear music evolve. And AIC did that with this CD.
@@jeffsmith9832 I personally like Private Hell more but I do love this song almost as much. Those layered guitars are amazing. Jerry might be the best rhythm guitarist ever...aside from Alex Lifeson.
Awesome song!! It became one of my absolute favourite songs from the first time I heard It..I can listen to It non stop ,never ever get tired of It!! Wow what a brilliant amazing masterpiece..one of the most beautiful magical amazing songs I've ever heard of all time..It's freakin Immortal ..R.I.P Layne...❤️
I'm a guitarist so I don't usually pay attention to drums, but when I watch Sean play in this, I can see that he's a good dang drummer. It seems so natural.
Watching him play live is amazing. He is very precise. He actually at times does a crazy move to keep one or the other hand from moving forward. He's a drum surgeon!
Love this song. I like most loved Layne Staley. He can't ever be replaced but how amazing is it that we have this incarnation of the band with Jerry and William writing some amazing songs whilst holding that flame for Layne and Mike Starr with dignity and, respect. AIC are one special band.
Chain's are one of the most talented rock band ever produced in our human history. 2021 who is still listening ? I think most of our true Rock lovers those who are fond of 80's &90's old school classic rock bands . Love from India, Kolkata.
Time to change has come and gone Watched your fears become your god It's your decision It's your decision Overwhelmed you chose to run Apathetic to the stunned It's your decision It's your decision You feed the fire that burned us all When you lied To feel the pain that spurs you on Black inside No one plans to take the path that brings you lower And here you stand before us all and say it's over It's over It might seem an afterthought Yes it hurts to know you're bought It's your decision It's your decision You feed the fire that…
Just because Layne died doesn't mean that the music is dead too. I believe if there's an afterlife Layne is super stoked about what Jerry and the guys have done to keep it going.
Jerry was the mind behind this band. Not Layne. Layne just made the bands unique vocal sound. Jerry created this band and made the amazing AIC sound. I'm not hating on Layne at all, I love what he did for this band but Jerry never gets the credit for anything. Much respect to him. R.I.P. Layne Staley
I saw Aic first tour/show with William in Portland, M.E. Jerry opened saying we love and miss you every day Layne, almost brought a tear to my eye. Then they rocked.Wish I had been a little older so I could’ve seen Layne play in 90’s.
The number printed on the hand at 4:11 is 9687.. Alice in Chains formed with Layne in 1987 and Layne last performance with AIC was in 96. I guess thats the meaning behind 9687. This is about Layne..
For some reason I thought it was about mike starr "yes it hurts to know you're bought" perhaps refrencing him trying to achieve money or popularity through appearing on celebrity rehab?
I first heard Alice in Chains when I was hired to work for an Active Rock station in 2001. Loved every song we ever played by Alice In Chains. Can't get enough of their music. This video must be about Hotel California. You can check out but you can never leave.
The fact that AIC isnt in the rock and roll hall of fame blows my mind. They revolutionised rock music in the 90s along with nirvana, metallica, soundgarden, and many other amazing bands i could name but the list would be long as hell. My point is they changed history as we know it, they deserve the rock and roll hall of fame. Its disgusting they arent in it honestly, whoever runs that shit needs to be fired lol
I know I might be in the minority but this song is one of my absolute favorite songs and one of my favorite AIC songs.. It just sounds so good and perfect
This is one of those songs you have to listen to more than a few times before it hooks you in. As far as light rock is concerned, which is what this is, light rock, this song is a masterpiece. cheers!!
Awesome song 🔥 This guy is keeping Alice in chains alive . I feel like a teen again, listening to the band that never had one bad song on either side of the cassette tape I just bought from musicland at the mall.
Had the honor of seeing this wonderful band in 2012 my younger kids first concert ever on our shoulders in a small venue at Monmouth college NJ it was the most amazing experience!💖 Magical performance.
or even now if they had chris cornell as lead vocals ..the emotion would return in the music there's just no emotion in this band anymore at least that's how it seems to me
+Rick and it sounds like that because the true pain and misery of art died. thats the epitomy of creation,,,pain and misery with whats bared before your life, the creation of art off of misery is a form of trying to create something interesting something that doesnt make u want to pull ur hair out and gouge out on eye just for fun.h he became bored becoming commercialized and ended the artistic misery he felt. plus withdraws a btch.
Great song. Thank you Lane for all the inspiration. Thank you Jerry for keeping it going. Thank you Alice in Chains for coming back and keeping this alive.
Call me crazy but this track is probably my favorite by AIC both new and old lineup. It’s got the classic harmonies but it’s groove is just awesome with heartfelt and heartbreaking lyrics
The one thing you have to realize with the new line up for AiC is that Jerry is singing a lot more which is why the songs sound very similar to the original line up with Layne. The new singer has talent but Jerry is what pulls the two versions together.
Jerry C is the man!!! I put my hat down to the guy and his musical style captures me....he song wrote majority for AIC, his signature rhythms are fricken out of this world!! especially when he creates those dark sounding string bending riffs. The guy is a legend!!! And at this present, is still representing. He ain't no sell out that's for sure. And you can tell when he heavily implements his style in some tracks.
+KalarniaTamila Yeah, as it is with just about everything associated with Alice In Chains, Jerry Cantrell is among the most overlooked & underrated guitarists & songwriters of his era. Alice always had that extra dimension of blues & classic Southern rock in their arsenal that was every bit as mindblowing as their crunchy, monster riffs and fist pumping headbangers.
The majority of the ones that complain about AiC post Layne Staley fail to realize that if it wasn't for Jerry 85% of the songs in the entire AiC catalog wouldn't exist. This is def the album that divided the fan base but shit give it a rest. Jerry Cantrell is the mind behind most of the songs. Enjoy it while we still have them around.
Alice in chains is still one of my favorite bands even without Layne Staley the fact that the spirit of that band has survived and stayed alive for so long is amazing.
David Jimenez David You Did Exactly As I Did! When This IMCREDIBLE AMAZING Album Came Out I Listened To This Song Non Stop Every Day! Totally Crazy In Love With This So Perfect Amazing Masterpiece WOOOW♥ ♥ ♥ \m/
The whole album is a masterpiece but when I found this song, it blew my mind into space and visualised an image of Layne Staley looking down and smiling.
Always loved alice in chains ,rip Layne, but my wife left me when this song came out ,I was in a dark place ,I listened to this song every day ,and by the grace of God I cleaned myself up and reunited with my wife 5 years later ,we're still together ,and I still listen to this song to remind me of where I was ,and where I never want to be again ,beautiful song.
Layne would have loved this album and the direction the band went. This album is literally a tribute to him. *Listen to the words* in this song. It says all you need to hear.
Most of the bands that release a new album after a long time use to make it according the new sounds and they don't seem the same band, specially if the main singer is different. However, this song is like time never went by and Layne Staley was still alive: same groove, same vocal armonies... it's like it was 1994 again.
@Jerrycantrell_12 Thank you , you have just made my life ❤️ WOW !!! I am so much admiration for what you do!!! When I pick myself up off the floor I will get back to you!! OMG
