Lyrics:
My pain... is self-chosen
At least so the prophet says
I could either burn
Or cut off my pride and buy some time
A head full of lies is the weight
Tied to my waist
The river of deceit pulls down
The only direction we flow is down
Down, oh down
My pain... is self-chosen
At least I believe it to be
I could either drown
Or pull off my skin and swim to shore
Now I can grow a beautiful
Shell for all to see
The river of deceit pulls down
The only direction we flow is down
Down, oh down

Asked to explain further Layne told her that the songs meaning is meant to be derived by the person listening to it. Sure, he wrote the songs based off of his own life experiences but theyre simple in their messages for a reason. So many people can relate to them. After an intervention by my family and sent to a rehab facility in FL for an opioid addiction I was allowed music for 1 hr a week this song was the one I played over and over. Away from family and friends this song really hit home. This is how you feel when you know you have to make that decision to get your shit together or your going to die eventually, or end up in prison. 4 yrs clean now still makes me almost cry when hearing it!! Now looking back at everything that was lost and hitting rock bottom the only direction was "Down so Down".

someday we wont have to do this; there will be fun drugs with no negative consequences. It's not wrong to want to alter one's mind; just so far the only ways to do it usually turn out badly but if you look at all of human history, we are still in the primitive experimental stages of discovering and creating mind altering substances. We'll get it down eventually and life will be better.

Today he is a beautiful, loving, healthy, caring, providing husband to me and an incredible, nurturing father to 5 children ages 5-29. We both came of age in the 90s. I don't know how many times I educate my coworkers on addiction and how there isn't a choice while in it's grasp until there is a spiritual intervention of sorts..I was an addict and I know how easy it is to slip from taking a few pills to get through the day to selling your kids stuff to get that through the next few hours...unless you have been through it it's really indescribable with words.

But listen, if you have never walked the road of addiction then PLEASE don't judge someone else who has. I agree 110% the world truly lost a BEAUTIFUL soul with an amazing voice.. his pain is so REAL and you can feel it.. I LOVED Layne... there will NEVER EVER be another musician with that gorgeous yet painful sound.. there needs to be more options for Addicts of all kinds.. heroin, opiates, crack, coke, meth, alcohol etc.. People don't just wake up one morning and say Hey, I think I will get strung out today n ruin my life.. I am speaking from experience.. I was an opiate addict for 6 years and my doctor was my dealer.. I had a severe back injury and seen multiple doctors for different opinions bcuz I absolutely did not want to undergo surgery.. so instead of my doctor educating me and taking other routes and exploring different options available for me, he just kept writing scripts.. before I knew it I was an addict.. I couldn't function without the meds, I would get extremely sick of I ran out and it was HORRIBLE.. I finally had to make a HUGE decision to move away from everyone I knew and loved to get myself some help. I couldn't go on like I was anymore. I was hurting my husband and children so bad that I had to do it for THEM, as well as myself. I am happy to say that 4/1/17 will be 3 years clean for me! It hasn't been easy but I have a wonderful support system, my husband, children, and a few REAL friends. I wish someone could have helped Layne.. I know that struggle and it kills me that we lost him to the addiction, he truly was AMAZING.. RIP LAYNE

You should, it is a powerful introspection sparked by an incredible author - Kahlil Gibran This song quotes the "On Pain" section of Gibran's classic, The Prophet (which lent itself to the lyrics "or so The Prophet says" in this song).

To all the people that are coming here with a struggle: You are loved. You are needed. Your are wanted. Though it may not seem like it, a light is there at you back. The warmth of your day is coming. Don't give up. Don't stop fighting for yourself. Just wait... It will come. With hope and love I pray for your sun to rise quickly and it's setting to come slow. I come to this comment section every time I’m about to cross the tracks. Addiction has had a strangle hold on me for such a long time. I lost my mother to addiction and then I began to follow her same path. Then I lost my wife because of decisions fueled by addiction. All of my pain has been self chosen and it’s too much to bear sometimes. God’s grace and knowing I’m not struggling alone is enough to get me through my roughest days. I was so lost and hopelessly drowning in the River of deceit. God’s grace finally found me and I was able to swim to shore. Thank you all for sharing your testimonies. It has helped me more than you know! RIP Layne

I love this song and the way Jerry uses it to talk to his friends that I know he misses, and the music they all played together. All the Artists who came out of the NW during the early 90's are some uniquely talented musicians and song writers, that to me transcends that thing called Grunge. It's more than that....way more. It's incredible story telling, and some awesome rock n roll music.

The highs end fairly quickly and the lows aren't the end of the world. Make sure your toes keep tappin' until the drabs leave ya. Which they will. You can still reach some of your potential but realize being content and somewhat happy is more important especially in the short and long run.

A few years after I first heard this song, I read The Prophet by Khalil Gibran and realised this song was directly referring to this poem. It was such a revelation for me, as I read it, I could hear Layne’s words in my ears. And a woman spoke, saying, Tell us of Pain. And he said: Your pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding. Even as the stone of the fruit must break, that its heart may stand in the sun, so must you know pain. And could you keep your heart in wonder at the daily miracles of your life your pain would not seem less wondrous than your joy; And you would accept the seasons of your heart, even as you have always accepted the seasons that pass over your fields. And you would watch with serenity through the winters of your grief. Much of your pain is self-chosen. It is the bitter potion by which the physician within you heals your sick self. Therefore trust the physician, and drink his remedy in silence and tranquility: For his hand, though heavy and hard, is guided by the tender hand of the Unseen, And the cup he brings, though it burn your lips, has been fashioned of the clay which the Potter has moistened with His own sacred tears. RIP Layne Staley, 20 years since you walked this Earth but your presence is still felt.
