I believe the math book story that Matt recalled went one step further (at least it did in the version of the anecdote I had heard). Not only did the Queen want Carroll's next book, she wanted the book to have her in the dedication. So it was an advanced math theory book that opened with "Dedicated to Her Majesty, the Queen."

I haven't seen this version before! If you ever want to revisit the story, I'd recommend Jan Svankmajer's Alice from 1988. It's kind of a stop motion nightmare, but it's a pretty fascinating movie to watch. Anything from Jan Svankmajer usually is.

Paramount wasn't just broke they were dirt broke. They literally gave the crying turtle a cow head and insect arms. Even Cary Grant would be like "can I Cry?"

In Kingpin, the scene where they are pulled over on the side of the road on a bridge and arguing was filmed down the road where I grew up. 528 bridge across Lake Aurther Moraine State Park PA. We used to drag race across that bridge in high school.

ahh there's nothing like that vintage 1930s ""whimsy"". I'd accuse the filmmakers of purposely trying to horrify children if every single thing made for children back then wasn't like this

Cary Grant made his breakthrough early in 1933 via "She Done Him Wrong" with Mae West ("Alice" was released at the end of the year), but it can be argued the full-on Cary Grant persona wasn't completely formed until 1935's "Sylvia Scarlett."

A lot of the effects in this are surprising good for the time this was made. I mean I've seen similar effects in movies and TV shows that came out after this that are terrible but I usually excuse them because I always figured that was the best they could do for the time period. The walking into the mirror effect was especially impressive. I've seen another live action Alice in Wonderland where it obviously wasn't even a mirror but a doorway with an identical room on the other side. And I know it's not a mirror because Alice doesn't have a reflection. But this, Alice is literally walking into her own reflection. The shrinking and growing effects are also very well done. I think this was before blue screens were a thing and I'm pretty sure they had to make sets at different sizes but it looks better than having her standing in front of a blue screen or green screen and adding a background in post. There was also a trick they use to do in older movies where they projected an image of a background on a rear projector but that also created some disconnect of feeling like the actor isn't really there. I don't know how they did the effects for this but it's really impressive for this time period. Everything I'm thinking of for how they could have done it using practical effects I'm pretty sure either weren't possible at the time or were some how done worse in movies that came after this. The costumes are terrible and exactly what I expect for the time period but the effects are actually pretty impressive.
