thanks for your response ken. for some reason I'm really fascinated by the field of bamboo.

Lol that bamboo in the bonus footage is crazy. I actually have the same stuff in my front yard under my kitchen window, It will NOT go away. We planted it and then got tired of it and we ended up taking it out. Well a little less than a month later it was back! So, if you'd like some of that stuff for your house just take a few from your spot and plant it in the yard. It will take over within 3 months lol

Thanks for an informative video. Some of the areas I can hunt up here are several miles down some railway tracks into the bush, and we could easily face winter conditions here by the time deer season rolls along in Southern Ontario. I'll use these pointers to try to set up an ALICE pack for a whole weekend in the bush.

you know that's a really good idea I'm going to have to try that and see if it fits in my sleep system. as far is lashing the polls to your frame try velcro strips they seem to work good. thanks for joining my video. I'm still looking forward to watching yours.

That's a perfectly reasonable amount of weight to carry in, as you said, Bob. Especially doing the kind of woodcraft skills you practice, I think that's a very do-able weight. Sure like all your gear and that compact, secure load. You've thought this through and brought only what you need and use. Cool. That Bamboo plant grows out here, too. It mostly associated with wet areas. I don't know its name, either, but its quite common up here in the Intermountain West, were I live. Good Job, Bob.

Nice winter pack set up Bob,great campsite too. I want to do some winter camping over here but everything is flooded out,could use the hammock though.As to the bamboo crop,you said you were near a railroad,could that possibly be due to the construction of the railroads over there,they used to use a lot of Chinese labour on the railroads,could have been planted as part of their diet(bamboo shoots) and it has kept growing ever since,just a thought. Thanks.

Hi Bob, I always come back to your videos. First, content of what interests me; Second, even though I prefer shorter videos, you never drone on and on repeating yourself, you stick to the subject not to a vocal rut; Your gear and thought processes are basic and sound; and lastly your video and audio quality are great. Thanks for a great channel.

Many of the bamboo species in the midwest are non-native invasive species. However, several bamboo species in this are native river-reeds. I'd need to look up information on bamboo to say more. Also I could check with "botany" / "Master Gardner" friends to answer your question more thoroughly. Take care, Ken

Really cool video... I like your laid back attitude and actually really informative, I definitely agree that the Medium Alice pack and the MOLLE II Sleep carrier, shoulder straps /waist belt, and sustainment pouches really make the Med. Alice the ultimate pack....very versatile. I have set mine up the same way, by the way..how did you attach the bottom 2 MOLLE straps on sustainment pouches to the Alice pack?, I could only connect 1 strap on the bottom?, also I believe that you were sporting a military issue green parka of some kind?, can u give me the info on that also? Great looking spot to set up shop for a while, great video and keep’em comin.

Hey Bob, It's been a long time since we last communicated. You have evolved and come a long way with your gear since this video almost 8 years ago. It was fun to watch it again. You now use titanium everything and a much lighter pack than Dear old, and heavy, ALICE. I still love ALICE. I have three of them but they just weigh a lot don't they? I use mine for a Get home Bag, 72 hour kit situation. They are so reliable and adjustable aren't they? I like your videos, the old ones and the new ones. Keep up the great work Bob. Wear you mask and social distance.

It has been a long time Bart. Thanks for coming back. Yes over the years I have been streamlining my gear. I'm still not going to give up on the Alice. It is currently set up as my summer bug out bag in the winter I switch over to the Molle II. I don't have three of them I only have two. I'm not allowed to buy any more packs. You would not believe how many I have. For the last year I've been trying a 3-Day Assault Pack. I do like it. But not happy about the zippers. I'll have to do a future video on that. I'm glad you still enjoy my videos after all these years. You think I'd run out of things to talk about. LOL I've been trying to social distance but all my accounts opened up. Now I'm back to work. Yes I am wearing a mask... talk to you later and have a happy Fourth of July.

@@Bob808Knight It has been WAY too long since we last emailed or communicated. I see all your videos and I like them alot. I have a Gen 3 or 4 Molle II nylon frame and the complete riflemans pack and sleep system back and sustainment pouches and radio pouches and butt pack. I've never even set it up yet. I also bought a modern three day assault pack too. I love that thing! I have also been banned from buying pretty much anything in the way of camping, hiking, outdoorsy type stuff unless I can prove we need it. My wife is a pretty harsh boss nowadays about my spending. One of those ALICE packs fits her perfectly so we take it when going backpacking. She actually can hike several hours in it without complaining it hurts her. I got her the newer waist belt and shoulder pads like on yours. Have a great 4th of July Bob and please keep in touch Sir! Glad you even remembered who I am. I really love the videos you make. Isn't it almost time for canteen cup Tuesday again? Ha Ha Take Care Bob.

Hello, Bob. I always look forward to your videos, as they are always entertaining and informative. Thanks! BTW, just so you know, MOLLE, the system you are calling "mole," is actually pronounced like the female name "Molly." It stands for Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment. Anyway, you made me want to try some winter camping!

Hi Bob, great video. To answer you question on if that is real bamboo, it is bamboo. The previous comment called it correctly river cane which is one of 500 species of bamboo. Native Americans made and still make flutes from is. Is called Arundinaria. Happy holidays to you and yours.

+maggiealena mmmm so that is river cane. I've been calling it River weed. Lol of course I heard a new name for it the other day..snake grass. So I think I'm going to start calling is that....whatever it is I know it makes great building material. You know a friend of mine Billy Joe can make a flute out of it. I don't think I could I'm not that talented. Lol..hey thanks for the Christmas wishes. & I like to wish you a Happy New Year. And I'll talk to you later.

@Detman101
@Detman101 10 лет назад
I've been checking Amazon for the Alice pack, but it's always overpriced. Everyone on youtube says that I should be getting this pack with the frame for no more than 25 dollars. On amazon the medium pack is over 80 dollars. The "Tru-Spec Tour-of-duty" pack I originally wanted to get is 90 dollars on amazon.com. I dunno...I may get that first for my hiking/camping pack and get the alice pack for my BOB/INCH bag. I can see using the T-O-D pack for either of those situations, but I don't think I could use the Alice pack for everyday hiking like I do with my current Falcon-II. I dunno...I'm so on the fence...I'll know better once I get to the store and compare them both.

Hey awesome video, Big Dirt told me about your PVC Frame and I am looking at your other videos. Nice to know a general Idea of what to bring winter camping. I was wondering, what type of coat is that your wearing, I have a feeling its a U.S. Parka, but can you give me the official name of it? I have always wanted one of those...
@Bob808Knight
@Bob808Knight 10 лет назад
Hi Jacob ..oh yes the Big D. How is he you doing I really miss his videos...has he moved to St Louis yet?next time you talk to him tell him I said hello.the PVC frame project was a lot of fun to build.I still use it every once in awhile. I have made some design modifications I really need to shoot video about. As far as the coat I'm wearing that is somewhat of an interesting story. I have a friend that has a neighborhood trash day twice a year. They rent several big dumpsters and put them throughout the neighborhood....I went there to throw some trash away. As I was doing it I noticed a military duffle bag in the dumpster.I dug it out and inside was the old half shelter..several other duffle bags. and that coat.so you know I grabbed it immediately. I wasn't sure of history of it so I I took it to my dad who is ex military .he said it was used during the Korean War by officers. He was surprised on the good condition of the coat. I'll have to do a video on sometimes you can get a closer look. I can tell you it's extremely warm. Wow that was a long story lol so in the end I'm really not sure of the name of it. When I find out I will PM you and let you know. Thanks for your comment my friend.

No he hasn't moved yet, but he has found a potential girlfriend lol. The way I found you was funny too, Dirt told me about your PVC frame a long time ago and I never looked at it. then just a few days ago I was looking at videos of Alice packs and liked them. I was talking to dirt saying I found this guy named bob and I think he is a lot cooler then you, then he was like no bob is stupid (not knowing it was you) then I was like oh dirt he does a video on a PVC frame and he was like cool, you should go look at my friend Bob808Knight's video on that, I told him that is who I have bin watching and he laughed saying he did not think of that. Actually I found a coat like that today for $12 and got it, now I need to find a liner hat fits it.

Can you successfully go prone and shoot with it on your back? My CFP-90 is a pain in the ass to shoot with from the prone. Also I'm sure it's been addressed already, but MOLLE is pronounced Molly. Like the name or like the drug.

shaydeinsun honestly I don't know I've never tried..I know deer season is coming up. I'll try it and let you know how it works out..yes I've been corrected on the Molly..lol on a side note great profile pic brother.....

funny you should mention that. I did the same online search because I didn't know which way the belt went on. yes you're 100 The Molly belt is upside down. but I tried it both way. it seems to fit me better when it's upside down.lol so I'm really not sure what that means¿ I guess I'm Dyslexic. but thanks for noticing I do appreciate it.

Excellent question.. Synthetic is lighter and will keep you warm. As long as you don't get it wet.

Whoops.. The bamboo is Phyllostachys aureosulcata ‘Spectabilis bamboo... Maybe you have local Hmong from Thailand, They plant it out in the wild and come back to harvest it for food, They make a certain soup out of it, Khaub Piaj, Also, They will harvest it for bamboo shoots. Cut it down, Over a 5 year period, It takes over the entire area.

Rich Mountains thanks for the information rich. I was always wondered about that. plant...everytime I go back there there is more and more so I know it grows fast. I'm thinking about trying to make a shelter out of it sometime this winter when it dries up a bit. Plus I know it'll grow back. So that shouldn't be a problem.thanks again rich...

Greetings from Upstate NY, home of the beautiful Adirondack Mountains and excellent craft hard cider. I have a MOLLE II large ruck also...love it. But, no matter what pack/rucksack I may invest in, my good 'ol trusty large ALICE Ruck (w/ frame) will always be in my inventory. No school like the old school!

+That Man thanks for the tip. But I'm one step ahead of you... last spring I bought an MSS off of Amazon. I swear by it. Unfortunately it's still pretty darn heavy...thanks for your comment brother.
@Thermopylae2007
@Thermopylae2007 8 лет назад
+Bob808Knight If you get a set of "spaghetti straps" the MSS can be affixed to the top of the pack, which balances better than carrying it on the bottom (where you could affix the sleeping matt,) and leaves the rest of the pack free for other items. Something to consider, as I've comfortably slept in the MSS under the conditions shown in this video.

I think it is river cane. When the river floods all the Walmart and Home depot plants wash into the river and get spread all over the country side. It could be bamboo if it flooded withing the last 3-4 years. Real bamboo would be far taller.
@Bob808Knight
@Bob808Knight 9 лет назад
uscgalpha91 I do believe you're right... it is river cane. I found that out by doing some extensive research.another thing I found out it's great for bushcraft projects. I plan to do a couple videos about uses of river cane this summer.thanks for your comment brother

The frame from the Viet Nam era USA rucksack is too wide at the top to fit in the Alice pack. It is Aluminum and lighter; it fits the body way better than the ALICE frame; you can cut about 2 or 3 inches out of the top of the frame and use a dowel rod to epoxy it back together and the ALICE packs will fit on it; all the straps & waist belts that fit the ALICE will fit the VN era frame; and as you know the ALICE pack is OK; I used one of these modified systems in Alaska for years. You may still be able to find one of these old frames, eh?
@Bob808Knight
@Bob808Knight 10 лет назад
PawneeStrider74a I did not know that. Do you have a video on this setup?. I'd like to check it out...if not if you have some pictures you want to upload to my Facebook page that would be awesome. In the meanwhile I'm a start hunting for parts and try this myself...if I run into any problems or questions you mind if I send you a message so yiubcan help me out with this project. Thanks brother.

@Bob808Knight
@Bob808Knight 6 лет назад
Hi bob... I highly recommend getting a frame for your pack and doing The Mods.. Trust me it makes a big difference on how much weight you can carry.. I found the Alice without frame you can only carry 10 pounds... Which is OK for A-day hike.. Not so much for an overnight.. You might check eBay to see if you can't find a cheap one..I wouldn't pay any more than $30.. Talk to you later Bob have a great evening..

Andy Johnson I'm not exactly sure what the plan is.it's hard to tell from the video. So this spring I'll go out there and check it out. I'm not sure if it's edible either.I will have to look it up in my wild edibles book.so I'm sorry I couldn't answer your question at this time.

Bob808Knight That Alice packout looks legit. I'm asking birthday claus for one. (Santa Claus is already bringing me a military sleep system. :) ) We used to make mini rafts out of horsetail plants with toothpicks or small sticks and then float them down the stream. To be a kid again. lol.

Andy Johnson hey Andy I highly recommend the Alice pack..if you notice in all my meetup videos or any video I do distance hiking I used ALICE pack..I do recommend upgrading the straps though. A lot of the upgrade you can find on Amazon for fairly cheap. If you have any questions or need the links hit me up on Facebook and I'll gladly send them to you.

+Bob808Knight Whatever works and is comfortable to you. I myself didn't always think army was always right on some stuff such as heavy items on top inside the ruck. It hurt my back and I put it lower and didnt bug me as much. I thought I hated the ALICE until I was issued the MOLLE ruck. It was bigger but that was part of the problem too. They made us carry even more shit. It was just too bulky and the 1st generation MOLLE with the seperate MSS carrier flopping around while you're on a road march made it bounce even more it seemed.
