Parker never gets any respect imo. He was the first one to suggest that they don't investigate LV-426. He didn't want Ash watching his back because he didn't trust him. He saved Ripley from Ash. He died trying to save Lambert, even with his last words. R.I.P Yaphet Kotto.
@@NoelleMar And even though he'd talk smack to the other crew members and lose his cool with them at times, he loved all of them regardless. They all may have gotten on each other nerves, but they were a surrogate family. Which is why the deaths in the movie have the impact they do.
It won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects, it put Sigourney Weaver on the map, it made Ridley Scott a household name, it made $200 million dollars against an $11 million dollar budget, it spawned sequels, spinoffs, video games, comics, graphic novels, video games and an upcoming live action TV Series on FX.
This film is a triumph of movie design. It was released 2 years after “Star Wars,” but it looks freaking amazing (almost like it was made in the mid-80’s).
At 08:16, Upon making contact, the Facehugger administers a cynose-based paralytic in order to render it unconscious and immobile. After a successful attachment, the Facehugger will insert the ovipositor down the host's throat while simultaneously implanting an embryo. The Facehugger would remain attached to the host for anywhere from less than a minute to 16 hours, keeping them alive by aiding in their breathing to prevent the host from being smothered
I was 20 when Alien was released. I saw it at the drive in with my mom. Since then I've regarded it as the best blend of sci fi, suspence, and horror I've ever seen. The creator design is still my favorite. Our brains aren't made to recognize it, especially in shadows until it starts to move. Right before it kills Brett there's a shot of it swinging in the chains right above him and even though I had seen the movie many times I still didn't see it untill someone pointed it out. The only movie I would place in its category is Pontypool, a small independent film. But only watch it when you have a very good sound system. The soundscape is layered and it's everything. The sequel Aliens is brilliantly written and the seven years we had to wait for it worth it. It makes a very logical genre shift, while discovering new information about the creature.
The fact that Ripley is a woman has nothing to do with it. The robot didn't listen to her because he was following the instructions given to him, the other woman didn't listen to her because she wanted to save a crew member, and the commander was just stupid.
Ripley is beyond one of my favorite characters: she’s competent, level headed, has backbone and grit. Also love to see a cutie and a movie lol and your reactions are always priceless af
The absolutely brilliant thing about this movie, you really do think they're just low-paid space truckers. The dialog, the reactions, the acting, everything is so spot on.
"...and it's only gonna be 6 weeks, so that's good!" Lolololol Just wait for part 2! You know how T2: Judgment Day is widely considered to be the greatest sequel ever made? Many people consider Aliens, another James Cameron film, to be on par with T2! Oh, and check out the Director's Cut of Aliens! It's a much more emotionally grounded story 😚👌 Loved your reaction Journey Marie 😍👽
I've actually heard that The Godfather, Part II was generally considered not only the greatest film sequel of all time, but also of the G.O.A.T. movies, period.
"Nothing at all - zip, zilly, doop." - Ha ha, I'm using that from now on. Great reaction video and if you do the sequel "Aliens" (with James Cameron directing) it's an even better movie.
Haven't seen Alien in awhile. It was real good revisting this as you were reacting to it. I was wondering if you ever thought of coming out with merch ? Id definitely buy it. Support you always Marie, you're wonderful 🙂❤️
"It's got a great defense mechanism. You don't dare kill it." Classic sci-fi horror. The tension is so thick, you will need a sharp steak knife in order to cut it. The voice of "Mother" is so iconic, in my honest opinion. There's something unnerving about a cold feminine voice counting down to your death. It wasn't until GLaDOS that we rediscovered that a computerized female voice can be absolutely creepy. Fun Fact: In H.R. Giger's original illustrations that inspired the look of the Alien, the creature had eyes. For the movie, Giger insisted that the creature have no eyes, thus giving the bleak appearance of a cold and emotionless beast that hunts by smell. Real Guts Fact: The dead facehugger that Ash (Ian Holm) autopsies was made using fresh shellfish, four oysters, and a sheep kidney to re-create the internal organs. Filming had to be done quickly because the organic material would go bad very fast under the studio lights. Bloody Solution Fact: It was conceptual artist Ron Cobb who came up with the idea that the Alien should bleed acid. This came about when Dan O'Bannon ran into a wall with the screenplay on how to handle the last half of the movie. He needed a good reason for why the crew members don't just shoot the thing and kill it but still not make it an indestructible monster that can't be killed. The acid blood was the idea that solved this problem.
Interesting fact is that Ripley was originally written for a male actor, and after they cast Sigourney they decided not to change anything about her dialogue or character. It’s a fascinating idea when you see how much better the movie is with a female protagonist. Love Sigourney and this movie. Its practical effects stand up better than most CGI 😊💚
I saw this in the theater and I can’t explain how this affected us. Nobody had ever seen a movie like this before. I loved your reaction and I’m looking forward to “Aliens.” Also, be sure to react to “Predator 2” as well.
It's funny when people watching horror movies expect the characters in the movie to know they are in a horror movie. In the universe this movie takes place in the characters don't know killer aliens exist.
LOL. That is a good point. I once saw a vampire film that took place in a universe where the word and concept vampire doesn’t exist. So when the attacks take place everyone is clueless as to what it could mean.
I will say that in a lot of horror movies people don’t take the most fundamental precautions that one should and would take, in the real world, WITHOUT knowing they’re in a horror movie. This movie explains it fairly well IMO-they’re not at all prepared or seemingly even trained for any of this (since Parker forgot / didn’t realize it was in their contract). The Captain may seem fairly calm, but his decisions are based on fear. He wants to break quarantine and then leave right away, when the ship is broken, because he’s afraid.
@@cajunsushiThe roles weren't specifically written for any gender, it was just a thing back then that leads would be considered male, Ridley didn't change the characters sex through any social or political ideals, it just suited the role better.
Decapitated, inert, and turned into a body horror extravaganza, Ash's "innards" sprawl about the ship's floor, white ooze dripping from them. This reveals what the "milk" from earlier in the movie was: a sort of diagnostic fluid that helped his interior systems run.
No one in their right mind goes back for the ship's cat when you have an eight-foot acid-spitting monster after you. Saying that this is the best Truckers In Space film.
Guess you don't know cat lovers, I absolutely would, Jones is a ships cat and therefore a member of the crew after all. This iteration of the xeno doesn't spit acid either, that's from the games and comics.
Great reaction Journey Marie ... might I suggest that for the excellent sequel 'Aliens' you upgrade your nutrition to the Snickers bars that made you famous in the UK. 🤷♂
Uh-oh, a youngster is boarding the "Nostromo." What will she make of this "old, long, slow-moving, character-entered, no-DFX" movie? The Company is sending the equivalent of a freighter crew to "do science" on an unexplored planet! 3:10 Canny observers saw Ash's "calisthenics" as suspect. 4:25 The Space Jockey, a mystery for decades. 5:27 Second Officer Kane = Zapp Brannigan. 6:30 How's THAT for a jump scare? 6:39 This conversation has become iconic due to recent events. 7:30 The Face Hugger, grossing out audiences for years. 8:27 Acid blood answered the "why didn't they just cut it off him?" question. 11:07 A Props dept. work ART, made of sea animals. CGI Can't match this level of reality. 13:40 Kane's last meal. 14:40 The Xenomorph, scaring audiences for over 40 years. 16:04 Along came Jones. 17:53 Say hello to Bolaji Badejo. 19:09 How's that for a "syntax error"? 20:19 You're in command, Ripley. 22:45 In 1979, this was my "WTF? Ash ISN'T Human!?" moment. 25:04 Most didn't see this coming. 34:43 Tonight's entree on the shuttle "Narcissus" is Xenomorph Steamed in Shell. 35:27 Correction, Char-Broiled Xenomorph. Now on to "Aliens" (1986).
One of my favorite movies series, watch the Prequel "PROMETHEUS" first and be sure you get then ten min deleted conversation between the Engineer and David u can play it after the movie its here on youtube, then watch the sequel to this ALIENS. I tell everyone to do it in this order but no one does. The series will make much more sense if you do.
25:45, see Ash isn't sexist he is just a robot on a secret mission. Also the Company has known about the Aliens for a long long time. Keep watching the Predator and Alien series as they crossover. All will be revealed.
History lesson.. During the 1930s bllk people in film's played scared of their own shadow,"I'm Not Gonna "N" hear" stereotypes. To the point of during WW2 most Americans didn't think they'd flight...
I agree it's odd they didn't give any explanation for how it got so large so quickly. I've read they cut a scene where it got into the food supplies before we saw it grown to its final size. 🥞
Yep, in the novelisation it destroys their food stores, doesn't eat them though in the traditional sense, the xenomorph is silicon based and as such can 'absorb' organic and non-organic material to grow, it does so very quickly.
@@scottneil1187The crew in the novel also sees and tries to deal with the alien when it is an intermediate size. Their experience of the alien doesn’t jump straight from chest burster to man-sized xenomorph.
I'm glad that you reacted to this first ALIEN (1979) movie! I'm hoping that the 1970's pacing doesn't discourage you from reacting to the second one which has much more of a familiar an exciting roller coaster ride type pacing. This first one was directed by a legendary great director, Ridley Scott. The second one was written and directed by an even more popular director, James Cameron.
9:55 Nope, the reason Ash didn't listen to Ripley wasn't because she is a woman, but because... well, you saw, he's an android, an android programmed to get a xenomorph to Earth, and anyone standing in his, and the company's way, would be "dealt" with, as mother said, crew expendable. This movie is kinda unique, it is one of the few movies with an awesome sequel. They should have left it at two, though. The third movie is ok I guess, even though I am not a big fan of the beginning of it, but it's scary enough, so I guess it does its job as a horror/sci-fi movie. Let's not talk about Resurrection, especially not the ending. I actually prefer the AvP movies to Resurrection.
@@scottneil1187 I have watched it, it was a long time ago though, but if I remember it correctly, the scene I don't like about the beginning of 3 is still there. And they have changed another scene in the beginning, so it doesn't have the same emotional impact. That said, it's far from the worst movie I have ever watched, it does its job. And Ripley is always Ripley. Well, almost always, anyway. Yeah, Resurrection has some cool scenes, and good acting, but at a certain point in the movie, I had a "hmm, ok, that's... odd 🤔" moment, and a few scenes later I thought "no, just no... 🙄" But as a scary sci-fi movie it's pretty effective, I just think they took a few liberties too many with the Alien lore. But then again, I guess it's nothing compared to what other media, mostly comics I guess, have done with it.
Incompetent direct.., er, "Auteurs" wrap everything in shadows to make up for DFX failures. After all, "it's so daring" to waste film on NOTHING, while stunt performers curse as their best work goes unseen.
I also see it as a morality story. Everyone and everything but Ripley succumbs to their faults. If you watch it again, now knowing Ashe is a robot tasked withe getting an alien back to earth, his actions will be understandable. A ship's cat can be the ship's pet, and also kill any rats in the ship. I doubt spaceships get rats, but it's a tradition this crew might enjoy. I didn't catch if you've seen AVP. If not, you should watch the sequel Aliens beforehand.
1:39 Parker comes across as a bit of a douchebag, here, but he touches on a good point. Consider the _modern_ world. We have sailing ships designed specifically for hauling _freight,_ ships designed specifically for carrying out _rescues_ and ships (well, subs) designed for _exploration._ Three fundamentally different types of designs with three distinctly different types of crews, undergoing development in three distinctly different types of _expertise._ You don't go assigning _one_ to carry out a task better suited to one of the _others._
You do when it's a distress signal and there's nobody within hundreds of millions of miles to check it, also, it was written into their contracts they have to do this, they would know this and have prepped.
That's a good point. Except. Any and every ship on Earth's oceans will respond to a distress call to save another ship that's sinking. They ALL do rescue missions whenever needed. Possible exceptions only for super secret military or spying missions, but everybody else will rescue anybody else. Also, on Earth, the nearest ship that might come to a rescue is 4 hours away. In this movie, the nearest ship is a minimum of 6 weeks away, could be much, much more. That changes things.
4:50 "Listen to her this time." They can't really do that. These guys are on a 4 year job. If they investigate the signal they get paid for all 4 years. If they "get the hell out of here" like she said, then the forfeit their pay checks. Could you live for 4 years with no pay? Maybe a better question is, would you want to? Think about it. How much do you make in a year? Multiply that by 4 What if you HAD TO give your boss that much money tomorrow? What if you had no choice, you just had to give away that much money? Or what if all you had to do was walk around in an empty alien ship for an hour or two and you could keep all that money? 36:15 "Nobody listened to her because she's a woman or whatever." Nope, not even close. She's a young inexperienced officer, but she IS an officer, 3rd in command. She's going places, gonna have a great career. But the Captain, Kane, and Ash were never going to listen to a young inexperienced officer WHO IS NOT IN CHARGE. It had nothing to do with her being a woman.
I mean I get it, but at the same time those suits are nice and solid, I imagine you feel pretty invulnerable to 'organic' things after walking across that planet
36:04, in the original script the Alien isn't defeated it wins. Dodging Ripley's harpoon attack, it manages to get back onto the ship. Then it punches through her spacesuit helmet and ends Ripley in a very gruesome manner. Finally the alien then sits down and makes a distress call perfectly mimicking Captain Dallas's voice.
You should also checkout the Ghostbusters franchise. It has Siquorney Weaver from Alien in it as well. Watch it Ghostbusters, Ghostbusters 2; and Ghostbusters Afterlife. There is a ghostbusters reboot film but not nearly as good as the original franchise.
Marie, first off you gotta know one of the directors was Ridley Scott, hense the heroine's name. You can go several directions from this movie. l would recommend " PROMETHEUS". In the original Frankenstein by Mary Shelly, She also titled it The Modern Prometheus... In the movie Prometheus, we are the Alien's Monster. When l saw you were watching this one l knew, Your face would be the major entertainment. l noticed an "Oh F*ck" from you😮!!! Adorable! Also, l always hated that CAT BS. Como sempre, gran reaccion y recomiendo encarecidamente a "NOBODY".😅!!
6:25, agreed. This total lack of self preservation in these characters always takes me out of horror movies. You are on an alien planet and some thing that looks like an egg just opened up mere feet from your face. I would have backed up or started running.
You get the award for the best Alien reaction!!! This is the most I've seen someone jump to an Alien reaction..LOL I highly recommend the sequels: "ALiens" Special Edition, ALien 3 Special Edition, and Alien ressurection Special Edition, and Alien vs Predator.
Yeah the difference between me and them, I will go get a new job, I won't risk my life for money not a damn chance in hell, I won't mess with aliens and as soon as I saw that thing on his face I would have left with the shuttle and left with the cat. I'd leave all the idiots behind who would rather risk their lives.
You're thinking of Aliens. THAT crew of marines sleeps 17 days to get to LV-426. These guys in this movie just slept for about 10 months. Dallas says they are "halfway to Earth" and Lambert says it will take "ten months to reach Earth" so I draw from those two lines that they slept about 10 months prior to waking up right here.
Ripley was indeed in hypersleep for 57 years. When she first meets Company representative Carter Burke (Paul Reiser), she is in the hospital and he informs her that she's been out there for 57 years, at which point she starts to react to an alien birthing from her.@@blakewalker84120
@@blakewalker84120 In Alien 2 How long did it take the Marines to get to LV-426? It takes 3 weeks for the Sulaco to get to LV-426. Mission times are based on the marine camera feeds seen on screen
@@youngtrainingdaywestphilly203 You did not comment on Aliens. You commented on Alien. In Alien, the Nostromo, not the Sulaco, was on the way TO EARTH towing the refinery. When they woke up, Dallas talked to Mother and said "we are about halfway home." Later, Lambert told them that the trip home to earth would take 10 months. You do the math - if 10 months is half the trip, that means the first half was also about 10 months which is how long they were asleep at the start of this movie I guess the Nostromo, a tow truck with a gigantic refinery, is slower than a military ship 57 years later.
