@@joshuabanner3675 Hard to say mass extinctions on Earth periodically wipe out specialists and species high on the food chain. Typically all the big stuff dies out leaving small generalists to re-diversify into the now vacant niches. Predatory clades that don't retain some omnivory don't fare well in particular. The real winners where though will likely be based on which creatures adapt to better maintain moisture thus far his forests are wet and these creatures seem to be quite adapted to reproducing in swampy environments which means moisture retention isn't a big problem for them. As stuff dries out a lot of them are utterly f**ked if he is basing things off the Carboniferous rain forest collapse as he seems to be largely. The then dominant flora largely went extinct Lycopod trees(Isoetopsida) dominated throughout the Carboniferous rapidly growing to towering heights before branching out but they relied on spores nowadays quillworts are the last living descendants of these ancient towering giants. Their competitors the progymnosperms actually beat them to the scene with large spore bearing woody conifer like trees but were out competed until the climate became drier and the surviving taxa which by then had evolved hard seeds and thus could live in low moisture environments. These plants grew slower but filled the full canopy thus making things far darker and driving a whole different ecology. Amphibians and "Sea Scorpions" didn't fare well among animals and largely died off with the surviving tertrapods being a lineage of amphibians adapted to breeding in ephemeral water and of course the Amniotes. All these survivors went on to diversify into fascinating forms but pretty much all of those were F**ked when flood basalts burned Carboniferous coal and releasing a shit ton of volcanic gasses and collapsing the late Paleozoic Ice Age sending the world into a hothouse climate for 260-33 Ma. Synapsids the then dominant terrestrial vertebrates including the mighty Gorgonopsids and other Therapsids ruled the Permian occupying all sorts of niches but in its collapse were nearly entirely wiped out leaving only a few small forms behind of which only one would survive beyond the Triassic the cynodonts. The reptiles particularly the stem Archosauromorphs fared far better and would dominate through the next mass extinction with one group dinosaurs particularly dominating the planet. They remain the best adapted terrestrial vertebrates metabolically mammals can't come close though they were far more diverse than we used to think. If it wasn't for a extremely unlucky asteroid impacting into the rich hydrocarbon deposits of Laurentia/North America's continental shelf blocking out the Sun killing everything dependent on the primary food web they would still rule the world. It is largely the same deal for Pseudosuchians crocodiles and their extinct cousins which ruled through the triassic and largely were wiped out only to recover and rediversify untill they were ended by the K-Pg extinction. Look at how they occupied practically everything at one point or another Armored Herbivorus Aetosaurs and bipedal carnivores like Postosuchus of the triassic to the streamlined fluked marine reptiles of the Jurassic and early Cretaceous to catlike terrestrial carnivores, and armadillo like vegetarians, yes they even evolved herbivory more than a handful of times with small herbivore niches partitioned between them and mammals. Ultimately if didn't matter only the secondarily ectothermic modern crocodillians survived the rest like most mammals, all the nonavian dinosaurs and non benthic marine species if you didn't have a low metabolism, feed on a long lasting cacheable food source such as seeds while being small or live in a detrital environment you went extinct. I think it is no surprise that Cretaceous primates (which yes were a thing) were basically the Mesozoic counterpart to modern ground and tree squirrels. It also isn't the most innovative creatures either Have you ever heard of the Weigeltisauridae? These were the closest Earth has ever gotten to a European dragon having managed to develop novel gliding wings supported by bone. Every other gliding or flying tetrapod has modified ribs or arms to form their wings but these guys straight up grew wings. Didn't help them survive the great dying however when their insect prey and tree habitats died out they did too ending the dreams of dragons on Earth. Prime candidate for alternate evolutionary history timelines however. ;) This has gotten long winded but the point is it isn't just about how well adapted you are it also depends on how lucky you are.

@@pokemonareawesomeful Well, they could. A jumping tree-dweller would profit from something that protects them from falling to their deaths. Like, perhaps they start by spreading their legs out when falling to get more air resistance. Those then begin flattening out and becoming gliding surfaces over time, which eventually grow large and muscular enough to allow them to fly, at first just when falling off a tree to get speed, then later on out of their lunge.

In my own personal alien biosphere project i have this icy water planet with large waves and tidal wind darting at breakneck speed so water creatures that usually gets washed up onto ice caps will have to evolve flight via assistance of the strong never ending wind and i made them so they will dart out of the waves and fly across continents and biomes

Tater Tom Well all that would be going on parallel to what's "currently" happening. Definetely would be seeing more specialization, also good chance the middle sized animals would return to the ocean after that ice age, then you'd get your seal and whale analogues. Surprised he hadn't thought of a "fishing" animal that would live along the shores.

Its possible that, as he says that the next video will be based on evolutionary changes based on changing landscapes, that he’ll go back to the aquatic creatures in the newly formed ocean, and how bodies of water surrounded by land might evolve

@@dboot8886 Yeah nor an aquatic ambush predator which on Earth was the niche that drove some lobefinned fish to evolve legs so they could sneak up on prey and they eventually became the Devonian analog of modern crocodiles. Without those hybrid niches that codeveloped alongside terrestrial niches tetrapods would never have existed. I know he can't cover everything though so perhaps a back fill or other interesting branch developments could be in order?

I think there'll be a part coming which focuses on the oceans, but for now, we're on land.

The trees so far are pretty disappointing. They make up the physical space these animals live in. They should have rich visualizations. Right now they're just some boring, identical spread of red palms. Looks more like a plantation than a wetland jungle.

I hope that in one episode the trees are diversified The next episode is about terrestrial climates so I think bib will talk a bit about trees hopefully because they will influence biomes

A return to the ocean would probably be done by the giant spiders and they'd become much like our seals and their family, air breathing swimmers with large fins and no scales. Except these are more spider. So they'd maybe become nightmares of the ocean, all but their 2 front limbs moving to the back and their locomotion in water would be similar to that of squid, while on land they basically drag themself arpund and hop

I think the elastospondyli, they have 4 semi-unused limbs, also, they're not fast, so they would benefit more from flight

maromei limonei I think one of the Malacoformes will gaim flight first as they’re the insect counterpart of this planet, and small sizes have an easier time flying. The Elastospondyli could gain flight, but I think it’ll happen later than the Malacoformes
