Another thing i noticed about how fast the offspring grew, as it feeds on Kay, you can see it continue growing as its tail grows while it's feeding off her.
Would have been a more nuanced use of a callback if the line was delivered in the following way: "Get away from her, you." Turns to Rain then turns back to the dead xenomorph. "Bitch".
My theory on the facehugger gestation period is that the facehugger knew it was being tampered with and sent signals to the embryo within to kickstart its process prematurely in order to survive a potential threat trying to eliminate it. That could be why the chestburster had a harder time breaking through the ribcage, because it was premature and weak and consequently it cocooned itself in order to try to finish its growth properly. It IS a perfect organism after all that is supposed to be able to survive any environment through rapid evolution.
Yeah man. I like that theory, but you also have to think these particular face huggers were being engineered so maybe they just had unique properties that the aliens in the first movie didn't exhibit. People are making up some dumb reasons why the movie was 'bad'. Calling something like that a 'plot hole' is pure idiocy, because it was obvious why they were different. Or at least how they could be different in that respect.
The movie was absolutely incredible, that 3rd act was insane. David Johnson stole the show. This is one of my favourite movies of the year. Fede deserves the opportunity to dive deeper into the story of Rain and Andy.
@@raidersofthelostpodcast_i disagree with everyone here. I am a huge fan of alien and aliens. I know those movies and canon inside out. I WANTED to love this film: Here is what I will say I loved about this film: the opening 20th century fox fanfare fut short - always cool. the set design. Amazing, alternate retro-future world. The droid was a much bigger part of this story. The scene where they reset him, and he goes blank and stares up at ceiling, is very well shot. What i disliked: the decision to use the british accents - they are so thick I really could not follow what they were saying. The story is convoluted as fuck. I could not follow what is going on, and which way the story is going. The very inconsistent thing is the droid - is he or isn’t he on their side, after they reset his hardware? I never really felt it was clear. I think turning him into an enemy, would have been an excellent script decision, until they switch him back at the end, and as a result, he saves their lives. Alot of the canon is ignored - how facehuggers do not come from eggs, they were not successful at latching onto their hosts. The one that does latch on, a chestburster comes out MINUTES later. The alien who almost kills rain at the end wraps his tail around her, total plot armor. The aliens are viscious as fuck. They stick a tail through your abdomen. I don’t have a problem with using CGI to imitate the actor who played the first droid from the first film, i just thought it would have been way better if it was Ash, and maybe the entire ship IS the nostromo, after it was blown up, and what is left. The final act with the humanoid alien; it was just disgusting and lame. A humanoid alien? Why would i care? Why is this more fearsome than the xenomorph? Total flop. Xenomorphs were not a big part of the film, but they should have been. 6/10
Damn dude did you actually watch the movie? Many of the things you claim not to be explained are explained in the film. Sounds like you need someone to walk you through it. @@vitamindealer7915
I thoroughly enjoyed ALIEN: ROMULUS... It was TERRIFIC... and I say this a 1st generation ALIEN fan of 45 years... Producer Ridley Scott and co-writer/director Fede Alvarez have delivered a knock-out punch with ALIEN: ROMULUS, an unabashed love letter to the entire ALIEN fiim series, yet at the same time, a wholly satisfying stand-alone effort as well... It is a more than welcome addition to the lore of the ALIEN saga... I LOVED IT! ALIEN: ROMULUS is a very thrilling and engaging film... Director Alvarez (who I was totally unfamiliar with) was an excellent choice to helm this film.. His visual aesthetic fit hand-in-glove with the styles that Scott, Cameron, and Fincher brought to their films... The movie has more than its share of tense and exciting "soon-to-be classic" set-pieces... The dynamic character relationship between Rain (Cailee Spaeny) and Andy (David Jonsson) was a highlight, giving the film's narrative the emotional anchor that it needed to warrant my investment in the story... Both actors (who I had also never heard of before) are great, and you really care for their characters... The production design and cinematography is impeccable, and the music score is very effective as well... The practical effects are fantastic, as are the CGI elements (and unlike some, I thought that the SFX execution of Ian Holm as Rook was excellent, and a welcome addition to the plot)... And as a fan of the ALIEN Prequels, I was so thrilled to have this film connect to them. All in all, ALIEN: ROMULUS was a winner all the way, and it reminded me of EXACTLY why I love this series SO much. Here is my ranking of the 9 ALIEN films... The Top Tier (the Holy Grails of the series)... #1. ALIEN (10//10) #2. ALIENS (10/10) ALIEN and ALIENS are both true cinematic CLASSICS ... They will ALWAYS be the absolute best ALIEN films (I think ALL fans of this series believe that)... The first is the ULTIMATE Sci-fi "monster in a haunted house" movie, and the second is the ULTIMATE Sci-fi "war-action" movie... However, of the two, as good as Cameron's entry is, Ridley Scott's 1979 film ALIEN will ALWAYS take the #1 spot. ALIEN is simply one of the GREATEST movies EVER made. It is PERFECT...It is ICONIC... It's a MASTERPIECE. The Middle Tier. (and a very IMPRESSIVE Middle Tier, at that).. #3. ALIEN 3 (9/10) #4. ALIEN: COVENANT (9/10) #5. PROMETHEUS (9/10) #6. ALIEN: ROMULUS (9/10) ALIEN 3, PROMETHEUS, COVENANT, and ROMULUS are all AMAZING as well... Even if NONE of them capture the original BRILLIANCE and ORIGINALITY of the first two, they DO come SO VERY close, and ARE all "Damn Good" movies... They are equally good for DIFFERENT reasons, each adding richer depth and nuance to the lore of the series... It's hard to decide, but as of THIS moment, I've given them this ranking (which IS interchangeable). The Bottom Tier (true misfires)... #7. ALIEN RESURRECTION (5/10) RESURRECTION is a BIG disappointment compared to the first three and last three stellar films of the series... Although the story is interesting, and there are things in it that I DO enjoy very much, the dialogue, acting, and direction (more often than not) is unfortunately "so dumbed-down" that it seems like a cheesy Cannon film from the "80's... That misguided tone definitely HURTS it.... BUT, it IS a "masterpiece" compared to the rest, which are SO BAD that I will break down this tier to an even LOWER level.... The "BELOW Bottom" Tier (we're talking "basement-level" here, folks)... #8. ALIEN VS PREDATOR (0/10) #9. ALIEN VS PREDATOR: REQUIEM (0/10) I don't even acknowledge ALIEN VS PREDATOR and ALIEN VS PREDATOR: REQUIEM... As far as I'm concerned, these films don't even exist... Both are bombs and TOTAL GARBAGE... I hope that both films get attacked by facehuggers and that xenomorphs explode from inside them... I first saw the original ALIEN in the theatre in 1979 when I was 12-years-old... In fact, it was the VERY FIRST R-Rated film that I EVER SAW in a movie theatre... I had to literally FIGHT with my mother and father to get ONE of them to take me to see it... I put up SUCH a temper tantrum that they eventually caved in... My father lost the coin toss, so HE took me... During the now-classic ultra-violent chestburster death scene of John Hurt, my father turned to me, worried about the well-being of his son, and asked me if I wanted to leave... "SHUT UP, DAD... LEAVE ME ALONE!", I angerly whispered back annoyingly under my breath, "I'M WATCHING THE MOVIE!"... Yes, it WAS scaring the hell out of me... But I was ALSO absolutely LOVING it... So we stayed... and that day I saw a cinematic CLASSIC. I was TOTALLY TRANSFORMED by what I was seeing up there on the screen as I sat there in the darkness. I had NEVER seen ANYTHING like that before. It blew me away... Sigourney Weaver's Ripley joined other recent film heroes of mine, like Luke, Leia, & Han, The Man of Steel, James Bond 007, and Kirk & Spock, as a new favorite... But most importantly, just as 1977's STAR WARS, 1978's SUPERMAN, 1979's MOONRAKER, and 1979's STAR TREK had ALSO done, 1979's ALIEN absolutely CHANGED my life... This young 10-12 year old was FINALLY getting to see TRULY GREAT filmmaking made by TRULY VISIONARY master craftsmen and artists... Not cheap, juvenile GUTTER TRASH like "The Apple Dumpling Gang" and "Petes Dragon" ("Ughhh!... How did I survive that rubbish?")... Not to mention the fact that ALIEN had the honor of being one of the very first films to introduce me to the amazing musical genius of the great Jerry Goldsmith! An amusing side note: When ALIENS came out in 1986, I was 19-years-old, and had a job as the Assistant Manager at my local movie theatre... Well, I can not tell you HOW MANY NIGHTS that, AFTER the theatre was closed for the night, my friends and I would have... ehem... "private midnight screenings" of ALIENS... Good times! This has been an AMAZING week... I NEVER dreamed way back then in 1979 that... 45 YEARS LATER... I would STILL be going to see brand new ALIEN films... AND... with Ridley Scott STILL serving as director and/or producer... How COOL is THAT?!? They say that in space, no one can hear you scream... But that won't stop me from screaming out my love for ALIEN: ROMULUS... To all those involved, I scream out... "THANK YOU and BRAVO!"
1:00:18 I loved that he took more time with the chest burster. It was like a bird/reptile cracking its way out of the egg, or an insect out of its cocoon.
I didn't care for most of the cast, but I can get past that, What bothered me most was the beat down of fan service. I was so frustrated by the end of this movie. From the uncanny valley CGI bringing back a character, the out of character lines that were simply pulled from previous films, to recycling the climax of Resurrection with the New Born (which I have hated for 26 years)...The constant recycling all pulled me out of this story. I was just depressed by the end of this, with the thought that all we have left is to recycle even the bad ideas.
It wasn't CGI, it was an animatronic with a voice actor. The uncanny valley was intended serve as a "hybrid" version of the pre-jump cut plastic version to the post-jump cut real version from the first movie. People have often complained that effect looked terrible so I believe this may just have been a way to offer a tribute without using today's CG to make it "perfect".
@@TobyRawal The only bit that gave me pause was the initial close up shot of him. Once it settled on him for subsequent shots I didn't find it too jarring. People are exaggerating. It could've been better, but it wasn't THAT bad. I mean, christ, it's just one effect that was a bit janky. People are so spoiled today. Do we not remember some of the movies from the 80s that weren't employing the most convincing effects but still had a particular charm to them? So what that it wasn't perfect? Get over it. It served its purpose.
As for the scene where Navarro get face hugged and more or less immediately gets bursted, I read it as rook having experimented on then aliens, and made them much more streamlined and efficient. its one of the many things the ai was up to in the lab.
Two words. Only two words. That's my only gripe with this awesome movie. Had Andy said: "Get away from her..." and left it hanging there, that would have been perfect!
I was worried but it was better than I expected..my only issues weren't that huge... definitely an improvement over what we've been getting....I wish they waited to show us the chest burster X-ray until the theatre instead of the trailer.. but again...small issue
I think the fact that they always gives us a time frame, like 40 minutes before they reach the asteroid belt or at the en the 10 min they have for something (my memory is no good lol) they could not take many hours for the xenomorph to grow and all. So they were kinda obligated to do everything fast.
The people calling Romulus 'trash' are such posturing agenda driven goofballs .. It's definitely not without its problems, but I had a blast watching this thing. A few callbacks didn't ruin the movie. They just want to set themselves apart pretending they're the 'real fans' as they're 'too smart' to be manipulated by 'key jangling' and formulaic plot lines. The movie knows exactly what it is and does it wonderfully. I hope people stop listening to these idiots exaggerating about how bad the movie is. It's a solid spook house ride full of beautiful production, solid core characters, and lots of suspense and dread. If people are still on the fence about seeing this movie in the theater ... They should just go check it out for themselves. The negative reviewers are full of crap.
On the piece about how the alien embryo is implanted, I always thought that each facehugger has a physical alien embryo. This movie had me wonder if it actually isn't the case, but each facehugger has the black goo instead and it doesn't need much time to drop the seed to get an alien inside.
My ranking 1. Aliens 2. Alien 3. Covenant 4. Romulus 5. Prometheus 6. Alien3 7. Resurrection Although i love all of them, and despite being the last on my list, Resurrection is my most rewatched out of all of then 😅
The rook scenes, there where some shots that didn’t look quite there, but the majority of them worked for me , and the voice and performance where great. I liked that it was an ash model I think if they had not done close ups or maybe given him more of a damaged face, and had more a static rubber mask, a-little like bishop when he is turned back on in alien 3 could have worked better for closeups. The voice and performance were really great and I kinda loved that. Familiar and grounding in the Alien ( 1 ) timeline, it makes sense in universe as science model same Android. I also liked his call back lines as that makes sense from an A.I, “you have my sympathies” the repetition of this line for me brings home how much it’s the programming and how he is truly incapable of sympathy. Making it more creepy and inhuman. The stock A.I response to the equation of my actions are going to kill you. Anyway. I would be happy with a whole film in universe or maybe long format limited series just exploring the androids and life as a Colonist. Loved it.
Andy delivering the Aliens line is a top 5 moment in Romulus for me. Basically got a standing ovation at the viewing I went too. I'll NEVER understand the hate for this re-use of the line, especially from Fans of the franchise. It's RAD AS HELL.
I found it odd how easy it was to leave the mining planet, no confrontation or anything. And Romulus was so close, how has no one ever scavenged it before? Still an incredible movie
If Andy had done the joke from Pulp Fiction that would have been great! If throught the movie he keeps trying to tell the full joke but gets interrupted right before the punchline of ketchup then in that moment hes standing ontop of the zeno and just says "Ketchup"
I have a theory about the fast reproductive speed of the face hugger in this film versus the others. The xenomorph that the face huggers were harvested from was of human descent, Kane. Whereas the face huggers from the first film are most likely non-human. Also, in Alien3, Ripley’s chest burster is delayed because of cryogenic status Ripley was in. Anyway, I’m fine also just enjoying the film and understanding that things don’t need to be completely grounded. It allows for fun conversations like this to happen! 🤓
Yes, this is what "fans" wanted, the same ones who complained so much about prometheus and covenant that we weren't able to finish Davids' story connecting with Alien (1979). This was just a mashup of all previous movies combined to satisfy the nostalgia fans who are unable to process anything new. Thanks to them we'll never know how the derelict ended up on LV-426, thank you "fans"!!
I dont think they made it clear that the Space jokies created the aliens. I almost got the vibe that they did the same as the humans who EXTRACT the goo from the aliens. So i feel like we still have the question of if the goo is from the aliens or if the aliens are from the goo.
Have watched it 3x now. Wasn't thrilled with it after the first viewing because of all the call-backs. But it gets significantly better with repeated viewings. Technically, it is superb with perhaps the only exception being the AI used for Rook and related decision to use Ian Holm's likeness. The call-backs are less bothersome but still annoy. However, the muscular narrative pushes everything past the annoyances nicely. There will obviously be a sequel. All in all, it's excellent. Andy and Rain are great characters and the actors portraying them were superb. Both have wonderfully expressive faces, particularly their eyes. Fede and company hit this one out of the park.
Interesting thing (I suppose), Fede Álvarez actually confirmed that Bjorn is the father of Kay's baby. My question is, though... Why? Is it similar to a lot of historical incest where they did it out of convenience or necessity? Was it a spur of the moment under the influence thing? Are they even related? Kay is Hispanic and has an American accent, but neither Bjorn nor Tyler are Hispanic, and they clearly have different accents, indicating a separate childhood (because accents are learned, not inherited? Is Kay adopted or a step sibling of Tyler's? Many of those options mean she's not actually related. But we wouldn't have to question any of this if Fede didn't do it. Also, it's technically possible that in the future world of this film that incest is socially accepted. Doesn't seem likely, but I haven't been to either the future or inside of an Alien movie or game or anything else, so I can't say for sure. I just think it's weird that Fede went down that route.
For me the gestation time of the face-huggers has always been situational. I think of it similarly to the walking dead’s virus infection rate. It varies from person to person, and in this case, species. It gives it a level of unpredictability which is great for tension building and storytelling. Did I mention I loved the film btw? Valid criticisms aside I’m glad you guys enjoyed it as well. Alien is back!!!
I was very very skeptical. I appreciated that no scene felt particularly safe, it's always off for some reason. Also love seeing the cross stitch still being appreciated
Very well made movie scared the holy shit out of me especially the last part of the movie OMG!!!...loved both AVP films, and in an odd way both prequel films...the rest are classics, the assembly cut to alien 3 was a much better film, the only one I did t care much for was resserction..
First viewing was awesome. But I keep rewatching this movie and seeing more and more things I never saw. This movie is packed with little easter eggs and little moments. I just Figured out Bjorn and Kay were a thing on viewing #6. I just never saw that little embrace before, I guess I was hyper focused on the insanity of the moment with Navarro. Also I just noticed Andy places his Hand on Rain to keep her stabilized on solid ground during the Zero Gravity shoot out. a bunch of blink and you miss it moments. Well done. Really strong entry in the Franchise.
I was first skeptical about another Alien movie - until I saw the trailers and the director they chose who has a talent for creating high tension and suspense. The sets they used look very impressive, but I'm not sure if this will quite reach the highs of Prometheus or the first 2 films. The original Alien is a flat-out masterpiece. I watched it in theaters when I was a kid, and it left such a strong impression on the entire audience. It was one HELL of a movie, and downright terrifying. Ridley Scott created an amazing hybrid of science fiction and horror, and the other creators involved also deserve high praise. The unique lifecycle of the alien was a marvel in itself. Very creative, with loads of surprises. Aliens was also an OUTSTANDING sequel. A lot of movie-goers prefer Aliens over the original with its military action and, well... the fact there are MORE aliens and the tension of the movie starts much sooner. But I still prefer the nuance of the original, along with the cast and claustrophobic feel. Both are amazing movies, but for me the original Alien is still the best. Prometheus had some very grand ideas, and its ambition was quite something to experience. I really liked Fassbender as the android David, and I also liked how the movie presents the Engineer race and how they possibly started life on Earth and other planets. Ridley Scott, like he did with Alien, uses the "less is more" approach and doesn't spoon-feed everything to the audience. My main complaint with Prometheus lies with the ridiculously stupid choices two scientists were making, along with some cheesy cliche "run away from a ship in the same direction it's approaching", and some other funky old-age Weyland exchanges that just came off awkward and didn't seem to work. The pros still outweigh the cons in my book. The "black goo" and digital recording which showed footage of a harrowing event is worth the price of admission alone. It added some fascinating mystery and folklore to the Alien backstory. I won't even bother discussing the horrible Alien 3 & 4 films. Alien Covenant was also a disappointment and left me feeling more frustrated than anything else. On the positive side, at least Prometheus and Covenant took some risks. I just think the risks paid off much more in Prometheus than Covenant. Still left with more questions than answers, and I don't think the civilians David killed were the same Engineers we saw in Prometheus. They looked very different and were more primitive. They didn't have the muscular tone nor the cold black eyes. But they did look like a 2nd or 3rd generation "knock off" of the Engineers. Perhaps they were an experiment (like us humans on Earth), or race of people they attempted to make in THEIR image. It would still be nice to have a 3rd installment, if anything to bridge the gap between Prometheus and the Alien timelines. My list from most to least favorite: Alien - A+ Aliens - A (extended version - A+) Prometheus - B+ Alien Covenant - C Alien 3 - D Alien 4: Resurrection - F AVP (I'm not even going there, but ironically may have liked it more than Alien 4) I should also mention the terrific video game Alien: Isolation! It takes the same vibe & feel from the first 2 Alien movies, and it's quite a terrifying ride! You will also notice a lot of the sound effects were smartly lifted from the original film(s) - for a great nostalgic touch. If I could place the video game in this ranking, I'd give it an A-, which ranks somewhere between Aliens and Prometheus. So I am pretty excited about Alien: Romulus. I already heard about the needless "fan-service" and how it goes overboard "winking at the audience" with elements lifted from the first 2 movies (even to the point of ripping off a well-known famous line or two). I'm sure I will cringe at these moments, but hopefully the good is SO good I won't much care about its problems. I also hear the final act goes bat-shit crazy, and that's probably what I'm most excited about. I hear it's quite polarizing and people either love or hate the direction the 3rd act takes. I will just go in with an open mind when it comes time for me to see it. I do hope they explain why the entire cast is a bunch of young "Tik-Tok" Gen Z folks. There is no way the government (or even Weyland Industries) would entrust a novice group of kids on a valuable mission with billions of dollars of equipment and machinery on the line. That's a huge problem, but hopefully they provide a good answer. Even if the horror scares are crafted to perfection, if the plot and characters are a pile of crap it's hard to overlook.
Sorry, but not in the least. What the fans want are interesting characters that we can care about and a plot that is not a retread of everything we‘ve seen before. Alien: Romulus is a nice-looking but empty package. “Prometheus” and “Alien: Convenant” were not only original, their actors had weight, seriousness and experience
A lot of the fans, myself included, enjoyed some of the characters like Andy and Raine. Even Bjorn, though an unbearable ass, had a backstory that was kinda interesting and had direct implications on his character and how he acted towards Andy.
Sorry, dude, Prometheus and Covenant had the most air-headed characters possible. You're probably quite alone with your opinion on this. But I agree that Romulus characters were also bland and shallow. All three movies are heavily plagued by bad writing.
Thought they did a great job with this film, wish it had more blood and they would stop trying to introduce a new alien. But Fede, great job with the set feeling how it did in that era, the Alien felt real and bringing back the chestbuster alien instead of CGI
Just to say the pathogen doesn’t have to end up at the colony for aliens at all, as the events of Aliens take place entirely due to the crashed ship on LV-256 the ship from Alien. .carter Burk directing the colonists to the coordinates of the ship he gets from Ripley’s report. Great review guys and I’m pretty much with you on your whole take. Edit: you know the Reeboks are based on the ones Ripley wears in Aliens :) the foot on the ladder was a nice homage, watch the end of aliens its a recreation of that shot
I’m curious why fede went with the Romulus title, as it’s the first king of Rome -Romulus and Remus which were brothers and ultimately Romulus killed Remus and became king of what would be Rome. I noticed that they had one half of the ship Called Remus and one called Romulus just didn’t get the connection. Would love to know what anyone though about that.
The only fan that the director was trying to impress was Ridley Scott. The story started strong, and then somewhere after the 40 minute mark, it went into pathetic fan fiction. It was an alien film that was self aware, that it was an alien film. Call backs to Alien, where all over the set design, and the dialogue. I was extremely disappointed by this addition to an already tainted franchise. I'm Sick of prequels to this series, as they cannot seem pull their heads out of Ridley Scott's ass. The black goo needs to be written out of the series. Its just a maguffin to push the plot forward. One of the main pounts of Alien was its mysterious origin. Now every time a reference to Prometheus and the black goo, comes up, i want to hurl up chunks. This movie was pure member berry content. Dont even get me started on the last act, with the hybrid alien baby with the head of an engineer.
I'm going to be pretty mean. The film opens with the recovery of the drone, which has grown a cocoon around itself to survive in space: according to Rook, later on, the Nostromo event happened 20 years before Romulus, and also the experiments on the drone. So, it's fair that they found the drone, because Ripley continued the journey with the shuttle, but I find it strange that the company didn't trace some signal to head to LV-426, especially considering how Rook knows in detail what happened two decades earlier. The company knows that there is a wreck ready to be plundered, or at least the presence of other xenomorphs, yet they prefer to proceed with a reverse engineering operation (how?) on a single specimen. The part of the mining colony is, perhaps, the aspect that I liked the most about the film, but even here there is no shortage of illogical parts: given that I would have preferred that they had kept Andy's nature (great fantasy with names...) secret until halfway through the film, seriously, in a colony completely dominated by the WY, some kids have picked up the Romulus signal? And can they take off without any authorization? It would have been enough to have the leader of the kids say "don't worry, the company won't give us any trouble. I got a special permit to extract minerals from a satellite of the planet, but we will take advantage of this free exit to approach the station", or something like that. The facehuggers were used well, but the bullshit continues, for me, of having the embryos implanted at supersonic speed and having the facehuggers themselves survive... in the first film, they couldn't separate him from Kane. In the second, the doctors at Hadleys' Hope had to kill the guests to detach the faces...and the kids manage to detach one. Granted, Andy directed them, but that doesn't mean these faces aren't too fast. The chestburster isn't bad at all (in fact, I'll get it out of the way right away: the effects are good, both the practical ones and the digital ones, even Rook/Ash didn't bother me much), but the germination is too fast: okay, by now the audience knows that an impregnated human is doomed, but the characters don't. You don't have to play with the audience's expectations, but with those of your characters: it would have been interesting to create a situation like that of the impregnated colonist in Alien 4, just to give an example, where the Chinese girl helped out until the chestburster was born and then they lost an indispensable member. They could have even had the birth at the worst possible moment, just to add more tension. Bjorn is really a stereotype on legs: let's say that all the characters are flat, except for Andy and his sister, but that fell into so many clichés that I thought "Really? Are we still on this path?". I mean, you make fun of and threaten the one who has to be your nanny for 9 years. How was it possible to obtain the faces from the drone? Actually, even worse....how was it possible to obtain the biological technology of the engineers, from the drone? The Drone germinated inside Kane, he is not a deacon or a pure xenomorph. This, which potentially could have been the juiciest part of the film, was thrown in there, without much explanation...and it also remains a little sensible. I mean, from the genetic material of the drone they obtained not only the goo, but also the schematics for the amphorae of Prometheus...but how the hell advanced is the WY technology? And speaking of technology....but the blue hologram present in the nest? Yet another case of a badly made quote, and not explained within the film (what is it? Did they study the wreck? No film in the saga, not even in Cloning aboard a military ship 200 years after the events of Alien, had similar technology). Until the arrival of the hybrid, I don't have much else to say... I can grant that the protagonist can shoot xenomorphs with assisted aim, and the acid sequence is cute. I also found the "EH! You wanted!" moment with her and the drone funny, which seems to save her to, clearly, take her to get impregnated... even if from the context it really seemed like he was saving her ^U^ The way the victims of the nest were shown was worthy of a RU-vid walkthrough in some haunted house, I laughed like an idiot. The hybrid.... guys, worst beast of the saga so far. It would have been better to make a xenomorphic monster, like Fifield's alternate mutation in Prometheus. And finally... come on, this universe is getting a bit too crowded, without considering that a girl and an android in possession of black goo are headed to the Space Canaries. We're talking about the substance present on LV-223, still present in the laboratories. And WY knows about Weyland's expedition, Rook reminds the audience... so, why the hell didn't they go and get the goo from there?
Whoa so much to break down here! Thanks for all the insights. I think at the end of the day, Alien movies will never stop. But we can hope they remain artistic and well made. None will ever top Alien or Aliens, for now, but who knows. Maybe the next one will be the best of the franchise
Super late, but i figured out a way they could’ve incorporated Ian Holm as ash, without the beat CGI. They could’ve made the practical synthetic that was torn in half mangled beyond recognition. The face is damaged as to where the audience thinks it’s just another synthetic. When they link rook to Andy, the face reveal could’ve just been on the screen which looks much better, because all of the movie he could’ve just been on a screen and it would’ve worked perfectly.
I wouldn’t say this is exactly what I wanted. Yet again we have an ALIEN movie where the Aliens are an afterthought. They get minimal screentime, barely kill anyone & are sidelined for a Resident Evil reject in the final act. The threat does not feel increased even when multiple adult aliens show up. They just run into pulse rifle fire and get mowed down like zombies in a video game. Baffling decision. Movie looked pretty nice generally and had some fun ideas, but I wouldn’t rate it much higher than Alien Resurrection, from which this film basically stole its third act.
Just like you're copy-pasting that 'insightful' criticism. My mind is blown. You should talk about how bad the Rook CGI is and cry some more about the "Get Away From her you B" line .. We haven't heard that one yet either.
@@Fiveash-Art This has to be the Top “Tell me you’re a fanboy without telling me you’re a fanboy-comment” of the day 😂 Btw, how can you possibly know that I’m not the first one who posted this insightful criticism and everyone is copy-pasting my statement? 😂
@@GoranKlintenheim Wow.. How original another "tell me you're a .... without telling me you're a ....." .. Very clever. I love your copy-pasted quips. They're so interesting. You're a bot dude. Just wake up and realize it.
@@Fiveash-Art Haha, is this really you thing? Not having anything interesting as a comeback so you just regurgitate what others write and try your hardest to be as ironic as you can? I get it, you live this channel and you loved Romulus. And you get hurt when someone has anything negative to say about one or both of those thing. We get it 👍 Now move on with your life 😂
I was so relieved this movie is great in my opinion. Had faith in Fede, but really want this to succeed to get more films. My theater did laugh at the “Get away from her” line, felt awkward. Other than that, I really don’t feel like the fan service moments were forced at all? The movie is fantastic and stands on its own. Bringing the franchise back to what made it shouldn’t be a negative, don’t understand why it’s getting so much flack. Favorite film of the year so far, great video!
So 2 things. When I saw the movie I couldn't get over the question how did they get facehuggers..... and also if that xenomorph survived then you know for a fact that the queen lived after aliens lol
The next Alien film should serve as both a sequel to Alien: Romulus and Covenant where our survivors from this most recent film come in contact with David on the colony planet from Aliens or with the ship he was on at the end of Covenant. We also see how the colony planet became infested with Aliens. Not sure if it is possible or not but It would be PEAK.
This movie is damn good, nice story, a good new cast. The only bad thing was the CGI work done on the ash character or rook they dropped the ball big time on that. If they got that right it would have been a stronger 8/10 for me. There is never going to be 10/10 alien movie going forward. Alien and Aliens are both 10/10.
Loved it but got a lot of questions or gripes at some magical-plot-events. Big chap creating its own coccoon while in space seems kinda iffy. Chestburster creatong a giant wall womb is also a bit much. To be clear , I’ve always gripes about the trilobite growing to hundreds of pounds of mass in Prometheus. Also , how did that shuttle craft not do permanent damage to itself while playing bumper cars with the space station. What is the timing of when Big Chap got loose & when they 3d printed all those chest burst era. And why did WY make so many face huggers if they didn’t have a safer storage scenerio. Because we do see those face hugger apparatus all over the space station. Finally , I question why the heck that preggo decided to take an extra shot of one of those vials. What would’ve happened to her had she not taken that extra dose? Did she self inject a different strain/recipe vial than the original one that Andy was told to use?
Its already been established in Alien comics that the xenomorph can survive in deep space The wall womb was to help it grow into a full xenomorph as it did not have the proper gestation time as the facehugger's process was intercepted, hence why the xenomorph struggled breaking through the ribcage. The thing about the xenomorph is that they adapt and evolve extremely fast as is seen in the novels and comics so this is one of those rare times we get to see that a directors interpretation of that process on screen (also it was very HR Giger esque) As far as I'm aware, she dosed herself to save her own life as she was bleeding out.
without watching the video and only basing my comment on the title: This movie was great until the end. The stupid hybrid baby thing was awful and not needed. the black goo would have been perfectly fine left in the tubes and we could have done without the baby. Then the movie would have been perfect.
Na .. I liked the Hybrid .. thought it was disturbing and a clever way to connect it to Prometheus. What did you want? Another Queen? That would've been lame.
@@Fiveash-Art No I don't think it needed a Queen. It for sure didn't need that hybrid either. They could have left it with that Black Goo that Rook extracted and rediscovered in those tubes that he wanted to send back to the company. That was a clever way to link Prometheus. They went overkill and made it stupid with the hybrid.
I think the direction is great. I think the production/fx teams brought their A game. Where this movie fails is the script and characters. Except Andy and the main girl, no one else in this movie has any personality. The characters feel like card board cutouts. There was no great lines in this movie. The only lines that are memorable are the lines they recycled from previous movies. I don't like the black goo in the franchise. I'm not a fan of the prequel, so the prequels being brought knocks points off for me personally. I'd prefer to pretend the prequels didn't exist for the simple reason that I preferred the mystery surrounding the origins of the Aliens and space jockey more then the explanation we got. Spoiler: It really bothered that the company didn't even bother trying to salvage the space station, or the research. They didn't even send anyone. For me it's a 6/10 at best. Even as we were leaving the theatre, the person I was with said to me "I would never watch that again." I thought that was a bit drastic, but the more I thought about it the more I agree with them. Good watch once, but I didn't like it enough to want to spend more time on it.
I saw it for the first time today, and I'm gonna be honest. I thought it was alil weak. I expected a little more, I guess. IMO I'd give this a 5 1/2 out of 10.
This was not the movie I wanted. Prometheus and Covenant are the 3rd and 4th best movies in the franchise. This is nothing but cut and paste line, situations, etc from earlier and better movies. Heck, the script to Resurrection was better and more original. The characters were more memorable
As far as horror remakes , i would say TCM & Evil Dead & thats about it!!!!! Alien 3 is my 1# favorite in the entire franchise , i don't care about all the hate it gets because they just ain't real true Alien fans & im not the only fan that feels that way either!!!! I also loved Covenant even though most people hate it but idc about most opinions anyway because most people are dumb or lazy fans or sensitive & have low IQ levels so their opinions are completely irrelevant anyway 😂 I honestly think the original trilogy is all perfect to me , i love all three films the same for separate reasons & i think they are all completely different while still complementing each other perfectly ❤ Alien : Sci-fi/Thriller/Horror Aliens : Sci-fi/Thriller/Action Alien 3 : Sci-fi/Thriller/Drama Perfect mix of genres in each film❤ Alien : Resurrection is basically good up until after the underwater sequence & then i literally just turn it off every single time!!!! Prometheus is good but i actually like Alien : Covenant a bit more!!!! Btw....Covenant actually has the very first "Zero G" scene in a Alien film !!!! The final Xeno death in that film is all 0 gravity!!!! I haven't seen the new one yet but im sure its good because i like every Alien film , i just like some way more than others obviously
I just watched the second movie for the first time then I watched he'd romulus again for a sec I get how some people think the movie quites were annoying and I Def agree rooks face was god awful but a shitty cgi face and some campy quotes really didn't ruin it for me I like it!
I suppose I am the only one who did not like it. Apart from the facehuggers, everything was meh. Too much contrived nonsense and laughable plot armour. The characters were atrocious. It was the first alien movie where I was rooting for the xenomorphs to wipe out everyone. But the xenomorphs themselves would rather hiss dramatically at the last moment instead of attacking. It was complete nonsense.
Personally I love it! Yes there's lots of fan service between the lines and familiar scenes but I expected that from Fede. I would love to know if he wanted that many call backs or if the studio did. Overall I think it's a solid film and is exactly what the franchise needed. People lost their minds when Prometheus came out because it wasn't like any Alien film we've seen before and then proceeded to hate on Covenant when Ridley tried to return to form. It's a catch 22. I really do think this film evens out the franchise. Alien and Aliens are undeniably great but everything after is pretty mediocre until we get to Prometheus. Romulus is another solid installment in the franchise and a step in the right direction. Maybe if it does well the next film will have more freedom to explore new ideas.
I could've done with less of the Ian Holm deepfake, but if my biggest complaint about the film is when it was stealing from other films, that just means the rest of the film was really good.
It don't believe it was actually a deepfake. It was an animatronic with minimal visual effects voiced by a voice actor. The apparent middling quality of the Rook character was almost a tribute to the notorious jump-cut in the original Alien once Ash was neutralized.
@@devenparghi9214 The face was unmistakably CGI and not just a really convincing prop (animators tend to neglect chin movement when making characters talk) but the voice was an actual actor. I haven't checked but I wouldn't be surprised if it was the same guy who voiced Ash in Alien Isolation. (Okay I checked, it's not.) Oh yeah and that jump cut in the original. All they needed to do was cut to a brief mid shot of Ripley and Parker with their arms reaching below the screen as they worked, then cut back to Ash. It's one of the very few things in Alien that bugs me in terms of filmmaking quality.
@@reloadpsi With the budget they had do you think they could have done a better job to fix the residual uncanny valley? Or was it intended to demonstrate that androids can age from the date of manufacture (like David in Prometheus) to better fit-in with human crews?
@@devenparghi9214 Oh no nothing like that, I just think it's still an evolving tech and what we got was the best there currently is. CGI is always gonna have that little bit further to go, that little thing that ages it in a few years' time, that's just how it is. (I also think I've misused the term "deepfake.") Disney have some of the best CGI I've ever seen, and as soon as I saw CGI Ian Holm I turned to my friend watching the film with me and went "yep, that's Disney's contribution," not as a knock, but as an acknowledgement of their tech. They wanted to be the best 2D animators back in the day; now they wanna be the best 3D animators. That said, it would've been more impressive if it were in the film less so you as an audience member would have less time to scrutinize it, though I have to admire the confidence of showing the model in full light as much as they did. I've said this a lot elsewhere but I think several of Rook's lines could've been given to Andy instead.
It would not surprise me if there is a directors cut. The last 5th of the movie had a breakneck pace which felt like something may have been edited out. It would be interesting to check out a painting shown at the beginning of the movie that appears to be "abduction of the Sabine Women". The background relates to the story of Remus and Romulus does align itself with the movie script somewhat. Overall I thought it was a good solid horror movie. The overall atmosphere gave me Silent Hill vibes.
I just came here from an interview with him where they asked if there would be a directors cut. He stated that you he film he put out is the he directors cut…and he basically doesn’t do them since he releases his movies finished with not really anything left out. I’m curious if he is bullshitting, gonna see if I can find en Evil dead or don’t breathe directors cut because I felt the same way as you. Feels like some shits missing
Okay so I finished this vid about an hour ago, and went to another Alien vid on someone else’s channel, and a thought struck me. If they, in Romulus, found the living Xeno from Alien…… It’s possible that the Queen from Aliens is still out there right? I wonder if that cocoon could survive reentry to a planet. Queen Xeno is gonna go start another colony somewhere out there. Or. And hear me out… a Predator ship finds the Queen and uses her to breed prey. AvP completely canon to the main timeline 😂
I enjoyed the movie but I agree there were far too many lines from the previous movies. I did love the look and feel of the movie on the whole but I agree that Rook looked really bad and the ending with the humanoid alien was disappointing and a little predictable. Be interesting to see where the franchise goes from here. 3.5*
Not exactly. I didn't want lines from other (better) movies repeated out of context just for fan service. I prefer the fan service to be much more subtle. Just make a good movie. No need to copy and paste.
Exactly, now canonically Ripley wasn’t the first to use that one iconic line. I wanted to love this movie, but all we got was the exact same thing we’ve seen before, but not as good.
@@ZeonZakuBrigade some people do just want a dedicated homage love letter in 50 years ppl arnt gonna be with a notepad and paper checking to see what this movie did in terms of other movies but when you do look into it it’s nice that all the dots connect
I thought it was cool in the scene when they showed the capsules with the black goo the musical theme from Prometheus played for a few seconds. I thought that was a nice, subtle way to pay homage.
@@ZeonZakuBrigade ppl complain about this franchise being too different with Prometheus and covenant and then when it’s literally as close as it can be to the other movies ppl have a problem as well, you can’t please everyone ig
I hated it... especially the ending. 1.5 h of intrusive fan service and 0.5 h of what was the worst of Alien Resurection. Aliens felt only like nuisance not like scare... not like threat. I went out of theater disgusted.
Boring B movie with average acting, lame music (after Goldsmith, Horner and Goldenthal it was a bit shallow), no tension or the feeling of terror. They advertised this movie that it would go back to the horror roots. Where? Ok, there was a chestbuster scene -which we saw in the earlier entries- and there was a big talk about the third act. Well, it was hilarious. I mean, come on. Fede just repeated Alien Resurrection with another creature. It was a greatest hits collection. 2 out of 5.
