Knew you'd spend a good amount of time on the actors, hehe. Glad you pointed a lot of those things out. When your most compelling character is the only character who is not even alive technically, it's time for a rewrite and a chat with your CD.
@KyleCorwith
@KyleCorwith 22 дня назад
@@hardcutreviews What would have made it compelling? Having a mixture of an age group on that crew. This could have brought some conflict between the generations. And imagine having a father with a couple kids-how horrific it would have been if one of the kids died because of a xenomorph.

So I definitely agree with you Kyle about the cockney british accents not really suiting the whole Alien vibe of that universe. The RP british accent of Ash, David (fits well for sophisticated android characters), Kane and Clemens works because it's clear, precise and you can hear wtf they're saying. You spoke my thoughts when it came to the noticeable difference in quality of the acting compared to Sigourney, Skerritt, Holm..etc who had the maturity and naturalistic acting style to help you completely buy into their characters compared to what felt like a Disney channel version of Alien this time around. I don't think it's just an age problem though, I think you're either a compelling actor at 25 or you're not, getting to 29 (Sigourney's age in the first) won't suddenly change that and I credit Prometheus with at least casting some amazing actors on the level of the original in terms of skill and maturity (Rapace, Fassbender, Theron, Marshall-Green, Pearce). You mentioned hoping for a release of the practical effects version of The Thing prequel and I was thinking the cast of that film would've also been a great fit for a film like Romulus - Winstead is the right age and proved sufficient skill in that and 10 Cloverfield Lane, Joel Edgerton and Ulrich Thomsen also both very convincing as a pilot and doctor with gravitas and boy do you need actors with gravitas for a franchise like Alien which was supposed to be the more mature sibling or cousin to Star Wars (basically Star Wars for grown ups) when it first released.

@KyleCorwith 22 дня назад
@@thetalentof Reading your comment just blooms the fact that we are not short on great actors out there-at least older ones, evidently. So many possibilities with a better cast would risen the quality of Romulus to me.
@thetalentof
@thetalentof 21 день назад
@@KyleCorwith 100% yes, the only actresses I can think of though that have the craft down as well as the screen presence / gravitas to lead a mature Alien movie other than Noomi Rapace would be Vicky Krieps, Sylvia Hoeks, Hong Chau, Jodie Comer, Rebecca Ferguson, Betty Gilpin, Rachel Brosnahan or Andrea Riseborough. I know it's been a rough year so far Kyle with all these subpar, lacklustre remakes (Twisters was absolutely a remake, I'm with you there) and sequels such as this one but allow yourself to take a chance on Doug Liman's 'The Instigators.' Now Liman did a poor job of 'Roadhouse' in my opinion but honestly, 'The Instigators' was not only the biggest surprise of this year but the most fun I've had in the movie theatre since 2022 (The Lost City / Top Gun: Maverick). Casey Affleck's comedic timing constantly caught me off guard, it's not a laugh-out-loud movie but I never imagined going in that I'd still be chuckling so much and his banter with Damon as the straight guy and Hong Chau as the likeable tag-along just worked so well. My expectations were low but it's easily my favourite movie of 2024 (so far), I liked it just as much as Shane Black's 'The Nice Guys.'
@KyleCorwith
@KyleCorwith 21 день назад
@@thetalentof Saw ‘Instigators’. Yes, you’re on point, they have some solid witty, buddy-movie back and forth chemistry going on. However, I just didn’t care about the plot-not resonant enough, or emotionally connective to the main characters. I’ve mostly forgotten about the narrative. Mayoral corruption, I recall. Meh.
@thetalentof
@thetalentof 21 день назад
@@KyleCorwith Yeah the plot was lacking for sure, Mayoral corruption indeed (Ron Pearlman doing shady dealings, good casting I guess), it probably seemed more impressive as my expectations were very low going in (especially after Roadhouse), I just found the characters charming and funny in an endearing way that we don't see so much in movies anymore (Casey Affleck especially has never really struck a chord with me before so that was doubly surprising). I found myself rooting for the characters which I haven't done in a movie for a long time - I think it helped that I watched it right after having to endure 'The Union' (Wahlberg / Berry), another bland actioner from the generic, ChatGPT-esque Netflix conveyor belt.

I totally agree. After the first two movies, the series moved away from Lovecraft which was the whole point of the original Glad you mentioned how uninspired the characters were given the cast. Good take!
@KyleCorwith
@KyleCorwith 22 дня назад
@@OffTheCover It’s come to attention that they should have had a collection of different ages on the crew, even a family amongst it. That would have brought up the drama, the conflict, and the horror-stirring up the audience’s empathy-if cast well.

I didn't like it much. I gave it a 6 out of 10 mainly because of the use of practicals. I wont care to watch it again or to buy it. The first 1/4 of the movie I enjoyed, and a few other bits. Overall it is quite a weak movie that's all over the place, but people are propping it up hard I think because the rest of the Alien sequels have been garbage. People are saying it's the 3rd best Alien film but that's not saying much. I actually liked Resurrection more.. Romulus felt like a well funded fan film. What they need to be doing imo is emulating Alien 1 and 2 ONLY.. THOSE are the apex movies which should be continued properly. If they cant do a film that is on that scale of greatness then why are they bothering? There's no reason we cant have a movie that's as good as the classics. No reason whatsoever.. Unless they are purposely making weak/bad films.. Disney is doing that with Star Wars so maybe it's the same deal with this franchise.
@KyleCorwith
@KyleCorwith 22 дня назад
@@robzreelz And we’re seeing what you’re referring to with the inclusion of a very young cast. Why not have a mixture of ages on that crew? That actually could have spurred on some conflict between the generations, right?
@robzreelz
@robzreelz 22 дня назад
@KyleCorwith yeah that was my initial complaint I had when I saw the trailer for the first time. I guess they can't show masculine men with facial stubble anymore. Everyone could pass for a teen or early 20s - which for an Alien movie is bizarre and amateur. It has agenda written all over it. Also each person almost is a different nationality, which is fine, but it just looks like they were hitting their DEI quota. There's also an angle of feminism woven into the story with the main character saying she will 'fix' Andy.
@KyleCorwith
@KyleCorwith 22 дня назад
@@robzreelz Yep. And can you imagine how much more of a turn out this would have gotten if someone like a Sydney Sweeney was the lead-you know, some with sex appeal who doesn’t look like a near-adolescent? It would only fixed one aspect of many, but, damn, it would have helped.

Just like the Terminator franchise, the Alien franchise has two great first movies, and the rest are mediocre to straight-up garbage. They should just stop making any more new Terminator and Alien films because they have no more new ideas. The Mad Max movies, on the other hand, are still great! I just got Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga on DVD after seeing it in theatres 14 times. I love that movie, and I hope it does well enough on DVD for George Miller to give us the Mad Max Wasteland movie. I want that Mad Max Wasteland movie!

@@DannyKnightblade45 Wow, 14 times exhibits an affinity I couldn’t match up with. Yes, I will love to see a ‘Wasteland’ movie-hopefully bringing back Max. When compared to the Alien franchise, Mad Max has had a much better track record.
