The thing is no matter how advanced the explorers have been throughout history, there's almost always at least one thing they're completely baffled by that the natives don't even think about. So I feel like there'd be at least one thing that extraterrestrials would be surprised by. The idea that cracking a certain advanced technology means they must know about everything we find simple is kinda oversimplifying the nature of technological/cultural progress. And intelligence in general. For instance, I think it's possible to imagine sort of advanced life out there with some sort of weird instinctual or distributed intelligence would be confused at the concept of explicitly planning something in the future. I think this is interesting stuff to think about.

he's got kind of a point though, what if the aliens had only focused on certain things instead? Like they have complete and total mastery over space travel and figured it all out because all of their species only worked on that specific science, they wouldn't know shit about things like playing a guitar or medicine because they didn't do science the same way we did with people doing their own things instead. Yeah the odds of a species not only being sentient enough to communicate and develop enough knowledge to be able to travel through space and do things with it that is currently impossible for us only having those specific fields of science be highly developed is really low, but its still not impossible for that to happen. Or what if the aliens ended up being introduced to humans in a completely accidental way? Like some shit happened with their planet and it caused them to know that we exist and have all these things and they're still just in like medieval times, they'd freak the fuck out way harder than we would

@@Penquinn14 I always liked the hypothetical where extraterrestrials are weird fungi that are clearly able to solve problems and work towards goals, but aside from that are barely sentient in the way typically think about. And the idea that they also are to some degree aware of and confused by what we do is a classic reversal you'll see in scifi/horror media. That's obviously an extreme example, but there's also stuff like difference in advancements between civilizations throughout history - just because you're the first person to get a boat somewhere else doesn't mean you know everything they would. A similar notion to that can be employed in Scifi too - for instance I haven't watched a ton of Star Trek but I've seen examples of it playing with these sorta concepts often.

There might be different brain chemicals for every sentient being. Like imagine Laughing being crying, anger being horny and happiness being the face you make when constipated. Though what I mean is, aliens might be extremely motivated to advance in technology that is extremely 100% safe and self-sustaining that it's insane to them that humans took deadly chemicals and let it drive their world. Like, cars are powered by fucking explosions, and they go fast enough to kill someone yet not fast enough to safely teleport without harming anyone in its journey to the destination. The fact that we settle for deadly combinations and complicated solutions and odd playthings without the extreme motivation that they have for research and building (that might be as strong as the endorphins and the pleasure we get from sex) would just make them livid.

This is assuming that aliens would be somewhat comparable to us, and not like giant sentient electrical storms or something

Colonizers were literally confused about natives language and technology, now Imagine that with a bigger scale, and thats assuming aliens would even be similar to us, they may be composed by elements that we don't even know of

They might be hyper-intelligent fish men. There's no guarantee they're just basically smart humans coming to help us or giant tentacle monsters coming to kill us. We probably should be more open to the idea that aliens can be smart or dumb, regardless of if they have ftl travel. You don't have to be a genius to fly a plane, it's a learned skill.
