I didn't want to comment but feel it's necessary given that this video is meant to dispel myths. There are a couple glaring errors. 1) You're using and EDR correction file for your colorimeter that isn't designed for your panel. It's visible whenever you show Calman charts. This can cause measurements to be incorrect. 2) There is some sort of tone mapping happening which is obvious in your calibration chart at 4:25. That dip at 65-70 is evidence of tone mapping. 3) You can't just measure to D65 Whitepoint as Calman defaults to and call it inaccurate. Many manufacturers use an alternate whitepoint due to metamerism. LG does this with their OLEDs and so does Sony. You need to measure against the whitepoint Samsung/Dell are using. Or you can use a spectro and figure it out.

What's why I'm skeptical about the measurement data in all reviews, as soon as they showed some pictures about how they did it there is problem.

This is the type of premium Dell needs to focus on with their Alienware brand. Also it's cool to see gaming monitors to become the technology ambassador for monitor technology. Who knows, maybe the first serious microLED product would be a gaming monitor.
@e21big

To be fair, it's may be uncommon for people who watch CNN with icon on the corner 7 hours a day everyday - but it's super not uncommon for people to have taskbar on their monitor for at least 8 hours everyday (unless you don't have work to do.) The kind of burn-in inducing workload is far more demanding on a monitor than a TV. QD probably perform better in that regard, but we'll see. The fact that Dell is confidene enough to give you 3 years warranty knowing full well that it's will be used as a monitor and not a TV is pretty reassuring.

my overall first week experience with this monitor is as follows : 1. if the game supports windows auto-HDR feature, a small confirmation pop-up notification appear on the lower right corner of the screen and when it does, your game would shine with colors and perfect HDR experience. if the pop-up notification doesn't appear, you would have a basic and not professional level HDR experience. I played Ori & the Will of the Wisps and Hades and with windows auto-HDR support, it really is an enjoyable experience, particularly with 2 to 5 percent window 1000 nits brightness that this monitor supports, small specular highlights really shine magnificently. 2. the monitor has slight flickering and brightness-shifting issue in the loading screen of the monitor. 3. with HDR turned-on, video-recording of your gameplay would be messed up badly. so if you plan to record your gameplay, the only option is to turn-off windows HDR and play your game in SDR instead, which is really sad. this is also applicable when working with video-editing software like Adobe Premiere. Overall, I am satisfied with this monitor, its wide-screen form factor and satisfying-level of curvature. if your main intention is to play video games with this monitor, it is absolutely a very good choice to buy it but if you plan to record your HDR gameplay with geforce experience feature, your recording would be a mess. if anyone have found a way to record their HDR gameplay without pircture getting messed-up, please share it with me. thanks.

As someone who's had the Alienware AW3418DW for like 3 years now, I gotta say the black bars on 16:9 content stopped bothering me a long time ago. You jus get used to it. And I imagine true black bars will be even less of an annoyance. The bigger downside is a lot of movies/shows are stuck in 1080p since most don't have support for 1440p.

There are a few things I find ironic given he's debunking stuff. 1. He's using an EDR correction file for the C6 colorimeter that isn't designed for the panel. It's visible whenever the Calman charts are shown. This means his measurements must be taken with a grain of salt since the EDR they used could be making things worse, or better. 2. He says that the monitor isn't tone mapping but there is some tone mapping happening, which is obvious in the calibration chart around 4:25. That dip at 65-70 is representative of it. 3. Using D65 whitepoint as Calman defaults to will cause inaccurate results if the panel is using an alternate whitepoint. They need to use a spectro to check if Samsung/Dell are using one, then measure against it if they are. LG's use of one on the C1 is the same reason RTINGS OOB measurements are bad.
@JumpRopeLift

OLED burn in is not linear. Once you see any at all it gets worse faster. TV use is one thing, but monitor use is another. There are people who live in front of their computer. They do all of their work and play on the same display. 3500hr is 291 12hr days in front of the computer. The goal is to have it last 5+yr and never have to do any weird tricks to hide the task bar to reduce burn in. Yeah okay, if you're not going to be using the monitor for an hour while you step out, you should turn off the display like you should for any to save power consumption. I believe new TVs have better burn in protection yes, but we're acting like a TV that doesn't burn in visibly after 3yr means burn in is not a problem. I do not agree with that assessment at all, even if those 3yr were spent on desktop use. I don't believe in short upgrade cycles on screens unless there's truly something amazing around every corner every 3yr. For both the planet and my pocketbook. Every time somebody asks 'is burn in a problem?' on OLED gaming subreddit people downvote it because ofc it's not a problem. Every time somebody makes a thread saying their TV burned in, people laugh at them and say that's not what OLED is for. But it's possible things really do change this time around. I'll be watching with great interest.
@PantsaBear
@PantsaBear 2 года назад
Because using an OLED tv for 3-5 years at minimum for people is something most people are okay with at this juncture. They say it isn't a problem, because it isn't unless you see 3-5 years as unacceptable for a screen to degrade. I agree that we should move to better TV tech to reduce the burn in while maintaining that great picture, but the people saying it isn't a problem are right. This is where TV tech currently is right now, so I don't see it as "a problem" that a really good looking OLED tv is now much more affordable and can last half a decade at least if you heed the OLED warnings of TV manufacturers and take precaution. Not everything you buy is meant to be used ignorantly and last 10 years with no thought being put into taking care of it
@loki76
@loki76 2 года назад
We will see how the Burn in works out on QD-OLED.. Samsung seems to be using "real-time ISC (image sticking correction)".. That is supposedly in real time checking every single pixel and measuring it's electricity use and brightness level. There are several ways to handle it.. A few hidden pixels outside of view is used as benchmark. Also in order to hide or mitigate the wear and dimness over time for the worst pixel they can either push more electricity to it to push more brightness or they can reduce the brightness of the other pixels. So depending on how long it can last in many thousands of hours they have some leeway in reducing brightness to the lowest brightness pixel. That way the "burn in" or permanent ghosting can't be seen even though it actually exist. It's just some pixels get used more and age faster and get dimmer. But if this RT ISC works well then yes the screen might lose some nits over time or they push the aging pixels harder to keep up and find some balance across all pixels. Would be interesting to see how long that would last before the brightness has dropped a percentage large enough over the years that you notice. To me it all depends on how long the Blue OLED can last. Also in normal use pixels aren't sitting at 100% max brightness/electricity but fluctuate. That said if I get ANY OLED I still pay the BB warranty so I can feel "safe" for 4 years with replacement.. It's just super annoying it's so expensive. But at least I know I have 4 years and even longer if burn in were to happen at year 3 and replaced then you have 6 years.. I would buy a new TV personally after 4-5 years anyway.
@shadowthrone3695
@shadowthrone3695 2 года назад
I totally agree, if nowadays is acceptable that an expensive tv lasts 5 years then ok burn in is not a problem. The majority of people though not enthusiasts want to keep their tvs much longer than that

Hi @Caleb - I watched your video and read several articles with first hands on test and especially the German media is quite negative about some issues with color issues appearing in locations where bright content like text is shown in front of dark backgrounds. They complain about visible discoloration on the top of such text/elements and at the bottom, which the address to the LED layout being a triangle shape. Did you experience this as well and if yes, how bad is it? From the articles I read, you would assume it to be such an annoying presence of discoloration, that it would totally ruin the overall quality of the picture. Is that a thing?
@user-mp4bs5gy7w
@user-mp4bs5gy7w 2 года назад
1. Most people don't care how its pixels are arranged. We hope it can clearly display text. But in the short picture at 01:27, we can see that its text display is very bad, and there are color edges up and down the white font! 2. Please do not use the 16:9 mode to measure the brightness of the 21:9 display, so the measured value will be higher than the real one. In the last frame of 05:41, we see that the instrument has detected 100% brightness, but the screen does not display all white. 3. If you think aw3423dw is really dark, you should put it together with a90j C1 and face the light. A90j and C1 will be much darker than aw3423dw. This means that the surface coating of aw3423dw is not excellent, and QD OLED becomes LCD in the place with light. My working environment is very bright. Behind me is the window. Even if the power of aw3423dw is turned off, the screen is gray, so I returned it.

I bought this monitor! Can't wait to get it end of June per Dell, big delay. Have some questions DT! 1) Will you compare this display with the LG C2 42inch? Apparently the LG C2 has native 21:9 UW mode. At 42 inches it would produce a 38inch 21:9 display with top and bottom black bars. 2) I mentioned a 38inch 21:9 aspect ratio for C2 oled in UW mode is possible, but what resolution would that be? 3840x1600? I wonder if that too hard to push with raytracing with even 3080ti for AAA titles. Do you think we might get a 38 inch QD-OLED UW in the future? 3) You mentioned the low nits with SDR, is that something that should be fixed with next versions or do you think that was a burn in prevention measure by Dell? Hard disagree with the last point. 16:9 TV content? Sure, you get the black bars. But the movies with 2.4:1 cinematic aspect ratio going from edge to edge look absolutely stunning on this monitor. 😃

That is interesting observations but I do disagree on ABL. I have a G1 but it is still obviously dimming when there is larger portions of bright stuff on the screen. If I look at a shadowed wall with the sun just barely in the frame the sun looks nice and bright but as soon as I fill the frame with only sky, clouds and the sun, everything gets darker and especially the sun doesn‘t stand out anymore and is almost as dim as the clouds surrounding it. And that is with HGiG and having the game settings properly calibrated. I‘m eager to see if the A95K which should be the brightest possible QD-OLED with that heatsink is able to significantly improve that.

I know you wanted to gloss over the pixel arrangement, but like how can you ignore that that diamond layout is infact a detriment to pc use? like no one was complaining about it being pentile, they were complaining about the arrangement meaning that text and other high contrast straight line elements, which are very common on a PC end up with some unsightly green fringing from the examples ive seen online, since you know usually the rgb is a rectangular shape on PC monitors.

Valid concern. That being said, as someone who’s had the monitor about a week now is a non issue for me. Looking at the monitor IRL can tell hints of it (if looking) while taking a picture exacerbates the issue. Similar to how some people can perceive stutter, lag, etc. There's a certain threshold for everyone and if it actually bothers them. To add to this, whoever gets this monitor I hope you aren’t sensitive to this issue. Because everything else this monitor provides is amazing.

Well, it (2:08) might not be a PenTile display but it is most definitely NOT an RGB-stripe display either! Sensitive people (like myself) would be very disappointed to unwrap this and realize it's not an RGB-stripe! This is not an ideal pixel arrangement! 3:16 - I completely disagree with this statement! First off, there are a lot of people who have excellent eyes. Otherwise a 4k screen would not make the slightest amount of sense for a PC display at 27" or so. This display is a standard resolution for an ultrawide and one CAN see the pixels. Pentile is a horrible pixel arrangement in per personal opinion and this one is only a slight improvement. The space between the pixels is way too large, meaning the fill density is much lower than on an RGB-Stripe display. Also, the diamond arrangement of pixels can lead to really odd visual artifacts when displaying solid colors. EDIT of EDIT: Ahh, fair enough! You actually talk more about the pixel arrangement and it would seem it's also not your favorite arrangement. One can clearly see in this (3:55) section how absolutely terrible the font is being displayed.

Agreed! They really missed the mark in not making this a regular RGB-stripe arrangement :( Might be a dealbreaker for me... My main concern is cleartype: it assumes RGB stripe, so will maul the handling of all fonts :( But as you mention, there are other issues aswell with the weird arrangement...

Kind of related but unrelated ABL (auto brightness limiter) is definitely still an issue (hopefully not with this monitor though). My LG C1 48" I used as a PC monitor was sooooo annoying with the ABL I had to change so many settings to make it tolerable but still annoyed me in the end with the constant dimming and brightening. I'm almost ready to pull the trigger on the Alienware AW3423DW so hopefully this is not an issue like with my LG C1.

I was an OLED early adopter. My LG 9600 and E6 both suffered from burn in < 1 mos and in 4 yrs, respectively. The LG C1 is doing well so far, but don’t believe anyone who claims burn in is a thing of the past. I didn’t abuse my prior tvs or use excessively. It’s hard for me to believe a computer monitor with significantly more static images isn’t at a similar or increased risk of burn in.

The thing about brightness is definitely something most people don't understand. As you said, when you are using an OLED TV you want it to be bright, but as a monitor 2000 or even 1000 is too much. I've been using the CX48 as a monitor and i have to turn down the brightness to like 20-30% or i will burn my eyes out.

People dont understand that Monitors are not only for movies and games , they are also for work and to work in a monitor u need 100-200 Nits brightness and the most Important ANTIGLARE panel , None of those OLED panels have Antiglare panel all of them are just Mirrors , are only usable with no light at all.
@Cxs1a3
@Cxs1a3 2 года назад
One thing about brightness most people don't understand, is it's not about "brightness", but more about bright detail or gradation in the bright highlights. If a display isn't capable of brightness, it will improperly display a 700 nit detail, the same as 900 nit detail, causing a blown out appearance, HDTV test did a video "why your oled is not bright enough".

I feel for a TV burn in was less of a concern than as a computer monitor. I owned a 65" LG B6 that was a great tv and i was not worried about burn in watching normal content. I am using a 48" C1 as a PC monitor and I love it. I have a 10 year old 64" Samsung flagship plasma that has thousands and thousands of gaming hours on it, along with thousands of mixed usage such as movies, Netflix, etc...with no burn in. My 15 year old daughter has been the primary user of the plasma for the past 4 years and she games on it almost everyday...with no burn in. As was mentioned in this video, for burn in to occur you literally need to have the same static image on every day (for thousands of hours cumulative) for burn in to occur. Even with gaming you do not have this occur because you have cut scenes or you go into menus, etc. Also, my C1 has the EVO panel so although I do not get the full benefit of the EVO panel as I would if it was a G1, it's longevity will be improved because the EVO panel is made to be pushed harder than what the C1 does.

@@blindsay I have my taskbar set to hide until I hover over it... also, I use my PC for mixed usage including gaming. Obviously there are situations a user can create wherein they could eventually induce burn in... my point was that thru normal usage and with a few precautions, burn in should not be an issue for most people. If you know, or believe, burn in would be an issue for you, than you are best to avoid OLEDs, as no one knows better than yourself how you use your computer. Having said that, from my perspective, I am more than happy with the C1. So much so, that I moved both my PS5 and Switch dock from the TV room to my C1. I love the picture quality and the size...in fact, if the C1 had been available in a 42" I would have gone with that however I am glad that option wasn't yet available, as having now used the 48" C1 as a PC monitor, I will never go to a smaller screen. PC gaming now has the console experience for me. Keep in mind, the C1 does not have a display port so it requires a GPU with HDMI 2.1 (which I have) to fully utilize the 4k at 120hz. Given I do not play multiplayer, let alone competitive gaming, 120 fps is enough for me. I went from the very nice 27" 165hz MSI MAG274QRF-QD to the C1, as I wanted 4k HDR gaming on a larger screen...so for me, the 48" LG C1is exactly what I wanted!!!!
@blindsay
@blindsay 2 года назад
@@bilbobaggins7527 I definitely understand your point but for me I dont want to have to buy a monitor that I have to modify my use around. I work from home and aside from the taskbar of my machine I am constantly remotely connected to other machines with taskbars or other static elements. Also as you mentioned the hdmi connection, I only have a 2080S so I am still on HDMI 2.0 so I need a screen with displayport. I have the Alienware AW3420DW right now so this new one would be a drop in replacement. Also Dell specifically covers burn in under the warranty in case it does happen (which is less likely with the new one anyways)

I'm gonna get shot for this, but I've had SEVERAL LCD monitors with very permanent burn in, as in images stuck on the panel that are NOT going away that developed over time. And an LCD TV who's panel currently has a bunch of stuff seared into it somehow(namely a channel logo we havnt watched in months, a RU-vid video logo I watched TWO YEARS ago and a bunch of blobby stuff along the bottom and sides of the display, it shows up on everything at this point and we are replacing it shortly) . I also have an OLED and I've had Plasma. I've had no burn in on the OLED despite playing a bunch of games on it for hours on end and only at the end of my use did the Plasma start getting some Permanent stuff on it. I think from personal experience the burn in risk is probably a bit overkill, but I can see if you're using it as a monitor the risk being greater.

rtings didn't record any major color inaccuracies with the monitor, and it comes with good factory calibration. Rtings optimized calibration only adjusted green, and only down by 1%, not casually cranking the green down by 12% in the menu... I don't think using a colorimeter to pull a spectral power function out of pure white is the most informed way of measuring color accuracy. Green is used by the brain to interpret brightness more than other primaries, with blue light being the least. If you want to measure color accuracy, you need to use the colorimeter to compare the color coming from the display to what the signal maps to in the respective color space. That mapping is the whole reason there's a color space. That's how every review source I've ever read does it. In a lot of your reviews you use the word "processing" like a magic bullet.

I still take issue with the dismissal of the matt effect screen implying worse quality black levels and therefore perceived contract in a room with ambient light. Indeed I see that Vincent Teoh has actually shown it to be noticeable in his review of this monitor. It's basic physics and is something that was very apparent a decade ago when we had matt vs gloss LCD tvs.

Regarding ultrawide and black bars: • The PS5 now supports ultrawide • Most movies are in ultrawide resolutions and they have been a joy to watch on this display with no black bars. You get more black bars on regular 16:9 TVs. They’re just on the top and bottom rather than the sides. However, for no good reason, most streaming services don’t support ultrawide displays (Netflix can), but there’s a chrome extension that works around that.

10:16 not really. Movies are typically 2.35:1. I made a habit of transcoding my bluray movies/TV series to consoles and if it were my Xbox 360, I'd crop the letterboxes as much as I can, scale it down from 1920x816 to 1892x804 while adding letterboxes to the left and right to fully accommodate the 1920 width so we get 1920x804, then transcode to Xvid/AVC/VC-1 and have the Xbox 360 stre... Or squash the image and the ultrawide display re-stretch it back and there you go. Retro consoles using the full real-estate of the screen. Movies are ultrawide, start treating them like what they actually are, the problem is those BRs are encoded with those black bars so transcoding just to post remove them would worsen the quality.

Thank you for the interesting video, personally I am also considering whether to purchase the AW3423DW. The German magazine "c't" has published an article where unsightly effects can be seen on edges with very high contrast. They attribute this error to the sub pixel arrangement of the QD-OLED, have you noticed such effects, that on a window with a bright background on the edges a kind of shadow is created with the wrong color ? As far as I can tell from the reports, you have to be relatively close to the screen to see the flaw.
@kadajawi6567
@kadajawi6567 2 года назад
I suspect Heise / c't overblows the issue. I've had the Samsung Galaxy Book Pro 13, with a 13" RGB OLED screen. There the color fringing is rather obvious (thanks to the low resolution), but even so at most I find it mildly irritating. Given that the resolution of the Alienware is much higher and viewing distances are too, I doubt most people will be bothered. But everyone will be different. Btw., to me the effect looked like something my glasses also introduce, or camera lenses: Chromatic aberrations.
