The Dell Alienware AW3423DWF is a 34-inch ultrawide QD-OLED monitor. It's a similar model to the Dell Alienware AW3423DW, which was released before. There are a few differences, as it has native FreeSync support and a Console Mode that improves the compatibility with the PS5 and Xbox Series X because it can downscale a 4k @ 60Hz signal. It has a Picture-by-Picture mode, as well as the ability to update the firmware, both of which the original AW3423DW doesn't have. Its QD-OLED panel aims to combine the perfect black levels of OLEDs with the wide range of colors of quantum dot displays, but like other first-generation QD-OLED displays, it still lacks a polarizing layer, and the black levels raise in bright rooms.

@@jck_9441 It is outstanding. It looked great out of the box, and so I'm sure I could get it to look even better by playing with the settings, but I was already happy so I'm just using it as is now. If I may make a suggestion, play ratchet & clank rift apart on it. The HDR is amazing. It's one of the best looking games I've ever played. As far as fan noise, I do not hear anything.

watched this review on my AW3423DWF that I have had for about a month. the pixel refresh from the Oled Panel Maintenance even came up while watching the video and I just paused the video, let it run and went and got a drink. I think this monitor is GREAT for HDR and fast-moving games. I play a lot of COD MW2 on this as well as other games and the picture is spectacular. was able to create a custom resolution to achieve a 157hz with 10 bit color and full resolution. just updated the firmware today too which i have read helps with the hdr 1000 mode which i prefer for brighter highlights. This is my first ever OLED besides a phone and i honestly can say i am impressed!

So if i play MMO games i tell others, wait 7m my monitor needs pixel refresh then i can continue. This is kinda absurd as gaming monitor. I have seen reddit threads about 3-4 months burn ins even if they dont use static images. Changing the panel maintenance from 4h to 20h increases burnin risk even faster.

You can get 165Hz 10b RGB with custom resolution, no compromises necessary. Turn off the maintenance nag, the monitor will still do maintenance whenever you aren't using it. The 4h panel maintenance is to ensure near black uniformity it has nothing to do with burn-in. You will only see burn in reports from people that have burn in. People that don't won't go making posts about not having burn in. There is panel lottery just like with any monitor.

I have the original AW3423DW and it's simply jaw dropping amazing. The colors pop, the blacks are deep, and the white highlights are piercing with HDR Peak 1000 turned on. A truly beautiful monitor. I'm happy for anyone who has the chance to experience this either in the original version or the F variant. Well worth it.

The text clarity is perfectly fine, at normal viewing distances. I use this monitor 8 hours a day for work, and then the rest of the night for gaming, and it looks great to me. Text looks as good or better than the two crappy LCD monitors it replaced. I have to look really close and strain my eyes to see the color fringing on text. What I do easily notice are the amazing colors and the infinite black contrast.

I assume it depends on what you had before. E.g. if you compare text clarity with 28inch 4k IPS panel then you'll discover huge difference.

Not true. It's very noticeable. I can understand you coming from crappy monitors yes of course it looks better. But it is pretty bad compared to higher end monitors. It's one of my top complaints of this monitor, fringing is not isolated to text, everything is noticably fringed

Also blacks are not black with any sort of light in the room. Room has to be completely dark to experience infinite contrast. With light in the room blacks turn into purple

Watching this on my DWF after just setting it up. Somehow it appears larger than my previous Acer Predator X34 maybe because of the thinner bezels. I thought it has a glossy screen but doesn't look like it. I went with the DWF despite having a Nvidia GPU because I never use GSync. Fortunately text doesn't look blurry nor did I notice any color fringing maybe because of my viewing distance. This is my first HDR and OLED monitor and I wasn't disappointed.

@@shangrilaw7561 hdr can be run at 165hz 8bit + nvidia dithering. Or it can be run at 10bit 150hz if you change some pixel timings (basically overclock the panel). Zero downsides to 150hz 10 bit so its really down to you and if you'll notice the difference between 8 bit dithering and 10 bit. I rarely see a difference cause most shit seems to be in 8 bit anyways but I leave my panel set to 10bit 150hz

@@abd211m6 they didn't fix it, they fixed the tonemapping that wasn't even that much of a trouble to begin with. Nothing has changed except that. Hdr peak 1000 is just hdr400 with a bit luminosity up but no difference in highlight. At this point, i think they will never fix it, and it piss me off cause it's impossible to buy a DW right now.

No loud fan on my Aw3423dw... I believe the fan curve was changed on newer firmware different from launch window models.. Also there's more of a chance your PC fan's are louder tbh

those are coming. its just too expensive to make them right now. all panels are cut from sheets and the sizes need to match up to make them worth it. they just dont have a qd sheet that makes sense right now but they will soon. and also super cheap qd oled is like 2 years away which is nice

Hi mate, I have this monitor and have been using true black due to the the inaccurate peak 1000 but there is a new firmware update out and I've installed, it's not perfect but a lot better than it was, so much so, I use this now. It depends if you enjoy the image or not in the HDR True Black mode. The main difference between this and the HDR Peak 1000 mode is that True Black has a HDR peak brightness of around 400 nits, which is much dimmer than HDR Peak 1000. However, the overall image is about the same on both if you enable Console Mode and Source Tone Map, even in HDR Peak 1000. Choosing one over the other really comes down to personal preference 🙂

I have read multiple posts on Reddit and Dell about these having terrible coil whine and having to go through 4-5 replacements before finally getting a good one. Do you know anything about this? I'm the type of person to do weeks of research and this one came out the best for me, so I feel extremely disappointed that after weeks of research, I might not get the monitor I want bc of something like this.

I wonder if the processing latency increases when displaying at 16:9 aspect ratio with consoles due to scaling and to what extent exactly if does. The input latency is pretty high already at 60 Hz, but if it exceeds the frametime of 16.6 ms in such case that's really bad. I'm thinking of getting this for my PS5 with a prospect for switching to PC at some point in future, but this issue and the SDR EOTF tracking that is closer to piecewise sRGB target than a linear 2.2 gamma which seems to be appropriate for the consoles is what makes me hesitant.

We use 2.2 for a moderately-lit room but gamma is something that's completely a personal preference. 2.4 would be better for a darker room though!

At max resolution, you can only hit 100hz over DP. But you should be able to create a lower resolution to get 144hz. We just don't have this data at the moment. Sorry about that!

I own this Alienware monitor, and managed to get it to 12-bit color with high refresh rate and honestly, the difference between 10-bit and 12-bit does not seem that major to me. I'm sure a more trained eye could tell, but I honestly can't. Looks damn good though.

Nothing is really supported in 12bit, Dolby vision is the closest you will get and even that has a general setting at around 2000nits which most tv's/monitors can't do

I would still recommend the AWF for nvidia users.. The crazy response time of OLEDs negates the need for g-sync and its variable overdrive. The AWF also has lower input lag and upgradeable firmware. It's the better choice.

got a question. i have the DWF. u mention that on desktop if HDR is enabled on desktop, there is a distracting change of windows. And u mention dont use HDR on the desktop. HOW? because to turn on HDR, i have to enabled it on the desktop. if i dont, HDR is turn off even if the OSD is set to HDR1000. So you mention turn off HDR on the desktop, so if i wanna view HDR content, i have to manually turn it on...then once i am done, i manually turn it back off? That is troublesome.

The ABL is annoying when you have HDR on in the Desktop, and you're using the HDR1000 mode, but it isn't noticeable at all in the Display HDR400 mode. As the Display HDR400 mode is more accurate anyway, and doesn't suffer from the same EOTF tracking issues as the HDR1000 mode, I just recommend using that instead. Otherwise though, you can just use win+shift+b to turn it on or off, but personally I leave it on and use Display HDR400.

I do not recommend HDR 400 and nor do reviewers, if you plan to actually watch or play HDR content HDR 400 is terrible and you get a lot of clipping in bright scenes. HDR 400 isn't even HDR tbh and it seriously needs to be cut out of the HDR certification. There's 0 reason to use HDR on desktop and there's 0 reason to use HDR 400 over the HDR 1000

@@lilpain1997 EOTF still isn't fixed and the ABL hasn't been changed. HDR400 when implemented properly, as it is on the DWF, looks fantastic, and looks especially good on an oled panel. I've used both, HDR1000 doesn't look better, it still looks blown out, and I'd rather not have to switch HDR on and off every 5 minutes. You do you, but I'm gonna use HDR400 and I'm gonna leave it on

DWF is probably a way better buy than the DW. Cheaper, nearly identical specs, and you can update the firmware. All versions of DW's firmware so far are so buggy and basically unusable. After the first panel refresh the monitor becomes unresponsive every time it sleeps, and I have to unplug and replug the power cord to use it.

Aye. A recent update improved HDR, but it still has some EOTF tracking issues compared to the DW, but that's nothing at all compared to the downsides of the DW. The one downside of the DWF is something that can be fixed with firmware and that Dell have shown they're willing to address. Meanwhile the DW will always be a buggy mess, it'll always have that awful fan, it's response time will always be double the DWF's, and it still costs considerably more. It's a total no-brainer, you'd have to be a dumbass to buy the DW at this point.

Almost every game has static hud elements. I would be so paranoid that I'm not sure I would be able to enjoy this monitor with that on my mind. I get the three year warranty on burn in but one day after that warranty you are out of luck.

I own this monitor and while I'm not paranoid, I still take precautions. Watching videos in fullscreen and having a secondary monitor to the side for static elements keeps my mind at ease. The monitor is also very good at trying to do pixel refreshes after every four hours of use and when you set it to standby. Recently, I owned a Samsung Odyssey G9, and even waited to get it after many problems were supposedly fixed. Barely a week after the warranty (1 year) ended, it died. I feel much more confident in Dell's warranty and have the option of extending it which few manufacturer's seem to do. The only other one I really know of that offers that is Lenovo, granted, I haven't checked every manufacturer.

Tbh for HUD elements in gaming it's not really an issue unless you are planning on playing the same game thousands of hours. Mixed usage gaming should be fine, plus most SP games allow no HUD at all or have mods for no HUD. Skyrim is something I recently modded to add a toggle for my compass. A quick tap of X to see where I'm going and I'm off. No health, stamina or magika unless I'm in combat. Same as reticle. That and I don't plan to spen 1000hrs on it.

At 9.40 you mention it’s limited to 10bit 100hz. Not strictly true. This limit is only if you are using RGB colour mode. On an AMD card if you change the colour mode to 4:4:2 it will do 10bit 165hz. IMO 10bit 4:4:2 is the same (or a bit better) as 8bit rgb due to the overall colour depth on 10bit being far higher than 8bit. Even with 4:4:2 samplings you get more colour depth on 10bit IMO Real world performance makes no difference but you can do 10 bit 165hz on AMD cards. Not sure about Nvidia as I don’t have one of their cards.

You can do 157hz 10bit RGB with a custom resolution. You should not use chroma subsampling for desktop and gaming. That should only be used for watching movies.

I've had three of these which all unfortunately had perceivable coil whine. Other than that and the 10bit/8bit story I was generally pleased with the image quality. So if your ears aren't as sensitive or you can live with coil whine, I can definitely recommend it to you.

I ended up getting the DW version for the GSync Ultimate (for single player games). I also use this for productivity. I may go back to IPS for work though, I noticed more eye fatigue with this monitor. Not sure if it's just me or not but I suspect because QD OLED is blue light vs the LG oled

GSynch is pretty much useless for OLED. It really just sucks more power and puts money in nVidias pockets. Another kicker is that the DW cant be firmware-upgraded by the user. It has to be done by Dell for some moronic reason. The DWF is firmware-upgradeable and uses less power for the same picture. The 10 hz more on the DW vs DWF is just Dell leg-breaking the cheaper option through softeware. Some users have glictched the DWF to get close to the 175 hz on the DWF.

@@animaze8043 GSync makes the input lag reduced though is the thing. I actually used to also think GSync is a gimic but the more I used it on and off on games (especially story based and single player games), there is a noticeable difference in how smooth the game feels. I also used to think DLSS is stupid and reduces quality etc. but after using it on and off, it's a big difference and AI is the future. I think there's a real world experience and on paper vs the brain dilemma just like how even if your eyes cannot see, your brain "sees." The latter to me used to seem stupid until I understood what they meant.

Awesome video as always! Right now there's only a $100 dollars difference between the DW & DF. I actually prefer the DW because of NVIDIA G-SYNC ULTIMATE and the very small but extra 10 Hz. I only have a RTX 4080, but the DW just checks all the right boxes.

G-sync has alot of issues on there. It's mind boggling but G-sync modules cause more harm than good anymore. Ultimate ones have gotten significantly downgraded too. There has been alot of testing that shows that the f model actually performs better in everyway. Has better color, less lag, can actually be updated, and not as locked down. G-sync module locks down what the monitor is capable of and if you have any issues that are firmware related (like the ridiculous flickering issue alot of people have with that monitor) then you can't really do anything about it and just kinda screwed unless Dell lets you send it to them and they update the firmware with a special tool BUT alot of people have said Dell usually won't do that unless it's a certain situation that ticks a box for them to allow that as a part of warranty or something, otherwise you pay out the ass. Idk it's just such bullshit that we pay top dollar for a device cause it's supposed to stop flicker and reduce lag but somehow has worse flickering and lag than a monitor without the device. G-sync modules used to be a huge plus but honestly anymore G-sync compatible seems to be the way to go

That can be cleaned up with a driver update within the GPU's. At least you would have it when it is fixed. All in all I think both monitors are great. But with the LG C2 Evo so cheap right now, It makes it hard for me to choose either of these to be honest.

@@MrEdwardz00 nah sadly it’s more complicated than a driver update. The severe flicker issue has to do with the modules and monitors firmware. It’s an issue at the end of the signal chain. Drivers and anything they do are presignal. Plus drivers are pretty broad and any kind of compensation being made to try and help that that would be very specific and be a special driver for not just different GPU’s but for a specific monitor which simply isn’t done and makes no sense to do. Even if that was done it’d only be a bandaid, not a fix. It’d be way too much effort for nothing. Drivers just aren’t meant to have monitors in mind besides the typical graphics card and monitor communications. Idk I got a LG CX I use as a pc monitor and it’s just amazing. Honestly I’d just do that if you found a good deal. If you find 4k too demanding you can also do custom resolutions with borders so you are essentially running a different resolution native without scaling and smearing. That gives your more frames without sacrificing quality, just the image is smaller.

My system should be fine, but if not it gives me a reason to upgrade. I have been contemplating doing it anyway but I should be fine. My Current system is a Ryzen 9 5950x, RTX 4080, 32 gb CL14 DDR4 Ram, Be quiet Dark Power Pro 12 1500 watt PSU, Asus ROG Crosshair VIII Hero Motherboard, and a complete custom loop with 2 Thermaltake CLM360 radiators. I currently have the Gigabyte Aorus fv43u gaming monitor but the input lag is real. I'm dying to go OLED!

There's nothing inherent about a triangular RGB subpixel layout that makes it worse at rendering text when the OS supports it. Neither Windows nor MacOS currently support it, and so both render text as though it was a typical stripe RGB subpixel layout, which causes colourfringing. Sure, if it had a typical stripe RGB subpixel layout, it wouldn't happen, but the reality is that Apple and Microsoft could update their OS to support the new subpixel layout at any time. They just haven't yet.

Text clarity is a total non-issue. I look at text constantly on my monitor, and with better cleartype tuner at 1800 I can't see text fringing until my face is pretty much touching the monitor. I was worried about text clarity too, but I had the luxury of trying a friend's in person before I bought mine, and doing so brought me peace of mind. I get being concerned if you haven't tried it yourself, but it just really isn't an issue.

@@DJSoulbrother It's a bit of both. Yes, if windows knew how to render text with a triangular RGB pixel layout, there'd be no colour fringing. At the same time though, when you invent a new subpixel layout, these kinds of issues are inevitable for a couple of years or so. Sure, Microsoft could fix it at any moment, but Dell were well aware that this would happen. That said, I think they made the right call, cause I can't see colour fringing even a little bit in normal use.

By everyone does their best to avoid stating the fact that QD-OLED uses a backlight. Yes it is probably more confusing to consumers because most consumers wouldnt understand that 99-100% of people cant see the UV-OLED backlight, and in-use its not going to be that different from an OLED. What i'd personally prefer is a many zone UV-QLED same quality, same contrast ratio, but uses more energy efficient LED instead of OLED.

I had this monitor but had to return it because I bought it for the purpose of productivity but since its PPI is 110 due to insufficient screen resolution compared to its gigantic screen size the sharpness is so low that makes text look so fuzzy and pixelated. The other downside of it was its new pixel arrangement pattern that is not supported by Windows text rendering nor Mac. the clear type was not much of help either. texts looked greenish, reddish and blueish instead of being completely white on dark background or black on white. I don't recommend it for anything other than gaming.
