Any cord can be removable if you pull hard enough

The funniest thing about the cable is they engineered a proprietary connector and then made the plug non user removable. This is so they can attach cords for different regions as needed at time of manufacturing. Apple understands the benefit of modular design but actively chooses not to pass those benefits on to its customers.

I am starting to suspect that Apple puts more effort into designing their boxes than their products.

I love the drop in shots where numerous other staff members are disgusted with that hard-wired cable. It's such an obvious deal breaker, I have no idea how it got implemented.

The "Wow" feeling with Apple before, was, "wow, wonderful easy to use versatile tech". The "wow" then became: "wow, really expensive". Now, the "wow" feeling: "wow, frankly stupid". Sad.

What really gets me is the cable isnt even hardwired, it can be pulled out and replaced. This is apple being apple thinking people are just gonna toss out a monitor that is already overpriced and buy another overpriced monitor to replace it and some will. What will happen is A. most people will avoid it or B. amazon will start offering replacement kits with tool to pull the cable out.

As Linus brought up in the WAN show... engineers spent TIME to design that unremovable cable. It took MORE EFFORT to make it hardwired than it would have to go with an existing normal removable cable. These people went out of their way to give their customers the middle finger and take their money for what shouldnt even be a repair, but just a cable replacement.

It was so simple to not have any controversy, all they had to do was to put MagSafe like in the m1 iMac, and the same arm system as in the ProDisplay XDR

As a man who unboxes a ton of monitors in the course of business, I want every single monitor manufacturer to box them up like apple does. God that would be delightful.

It's really frustrating how it's not full screen with the iPad. You have all this computing power inside the monitor and the iPad and you get a boxed image. That's just sad.

Remember that Alienware monitor with Samsung QD-OLED display that blew away LTT's expectations? That display with a brand new technology costs $300 less than this thing.

Their MagSafe is so good it’s mind boggling as to why it’s not widely implemented.

Apple, I gotta say you knocked it out of the park with this one. Hard wiring the power cable into the monitor, why don't all monitors have this? Fantastic idea Apple, so futuristic, the design of it is just so perfect; you looked at what every other monitor has, a stupid detachable cable and you put that Apple spin on it and hard wired it into the monitor so it can never come out, not ever. Can't wait to get my hands on one of these monitors so I can give that cable a little tug and feel how secure you've made it Apple. Good job!

Thank you guys! There is a HUGE issue with how this s**t has been reviewed so far - they are trying to move it as passable, which is plain ridiculous. No HDR, the most idiotic non-removable cable, unutilized chip (where is FaceID???), no variable refresh rate, moron approach towards stands and mounts and they charge 1400+ for this crap. Tech journalist must hold Apple accountable for such excuse of a product, otherwise they will keep pulling this over and over again. The audacity of them calling it 'accesible' is beyond me - it's a pure money trap for the less tech savy users. Verge gave it 6 out of 10 even though they mentioned it's old ass backlight technology - 6 out of 10 doesn't do justice for such prefatory tactics towards their consumers. To replace your cable, you will ship the whole thing to Apple Care, for which you pay of course, and not be able to use your product whole it's getting 'fixed'. There is a power cable standard for monitors that's being used for years, they didn't had to ducking reinvent the wheel, heck, use the magsafe if you wanna blood suck more cash. Apple needs to be held under the same standard, as other brands, for what they release and media should remind them that. You guys, are the single best review of this display so far and I'm 99% sure it will remain that way. Thank you Andy and all else behind camera for doing the right thing, instead of eating the rotten Apples.

I’ve been daily driving the LG 5K for the past few years. I was hoping for the same thing but with miniLED/ProMotion. Instead we got the same thing with a $300 markup… after 5 years. Nice.

Apple Cinema HD 30" had firewire,usb,dual link dvi, and power all in one hardwired dongle... was a nightmare. I think it's msrp was like 3k too lol.

I believe A13 was included in order to control over 2,000 mini LED backlights, but Apple could not put mini LED at the last moment.

It also has 64GB storage lol. I think they are literally just recycling iPhone 11 for this

The only monitor I've had in eons with any hardwired cable was also a CRT, but it's the VGA cable that's hardwired, it still has a removable power cable. Thank you Packard Bell.

LG V20 has a built in audio converter chip featuring higher resolution of audio that Apple Computers could adapt so that we don't need to purchase an external audio converter/sound card for Audio Production purpose. No body has explained yet about audio converters used in Apple Computers. LG V20 also has always on the secondary display that can be switched off manually at the settings. Dynamic Island of iPhone 14 reminds me the touch bar of MacBook Pro.

I have one in the office for work, but I am having issues with USB peripherals connected via the USB-C on the back of the display dropping out all the time, I am trying to run the one-wire plug and go setup with my M1 MacBook Pro... I do not have these problems using my old Thunderbolt Display at home. So I have a small USB-C to USB-3 hub on the back, connected my wired Apple keyboard and wireless Logitech mouse via a USB dongle plugged in the keyboard, the mouse connection often drops out for like 0.5sec so when I drag and drop something it will mess up. Another annoying thing is I have wired headphones connected to the display via a USB-C to 35mm dongle, the connection will constantly drop out every 30 mins or so and switch to the monitor audio, and the headphones won't be recognized any more, I will have to unplug and plug back in for the OS to see it. The firmware is updated to the latest on both the OS and Display, and still didn't fix it just wondering if anyone else have this issue?

Funny thing is that cable is removable by Apple authorized service providers, but of course you need a tool in order to remove the cable, which the repair centres need to buy :) the ball keeps rolling

I think they are doing these senseless downgrades intentionally to "differentiate our top range products from a lower tier one" and to "give customers a range of imaginary choices"

I was sitting here the whole time seeing the potential of the product, and if the potebtial was engaged on, I would have bought 2 of these on mounts for use in my van setup (I live in a chevy gladiator). Forget stream upscaling, imagine having an old iphone and just pssibg compute jobs to your desktop and its display while out on the go. They could have a home-hub sorta deal and you sync your idevice to your monitor to run private services, or pull services from your desktop for your phone. And then you don’t have console access on your phone, but on your mac at home, etc etc. literally endless possibilities with how apple USED to develop extra technologies into their products (xgrid compute, easy net sharing, fw transfer/disk/external cd mode, and other cool things a powerbook can do with a 2012 mac pro). Its like the cheesegrater line of thinking died and now its all polished and enameled piano black dust and fingerprint covered shenanigans that look and operate horribly or plain ass are designed stupidly like the monitor above. I have even seen the plug in the monitor above used in other tech just fine. Its not like they couldn’t have made a poker plug and you just squeeze in a spring or something, its legitimately that they design their products to be replaced by the same product again to mill money. Thats how they got to where they are in the evonomy anyways. Make a walled garden thats hard to leave and make it even harder to use anything outside of that garden in the garden. Its all been the plan since jobs started getting sick.

if you're going to put the chip from the phone into the display, why not also put the camera in there and have the worlds best webcam? We've always been told that laptop webcams are shite because theres no dedicated hardware for image processing like there is in phones. Now there can be and it still looks like a shite webcam? Whats the point

I’m an Apple fan and even I have to say that they dropped the ball with this display. They should have added proper HDR support and a higher refresh rate. That power cord should be user removable (maybe magnetic like they did on the iMac) and the height adjustment upgrade should be much cheaper. Come on Apple, you are better than this!

The 23/24 ACDs had permanently attached cables as well. Not just power, but power and inputs DVI and USB etc.

The original Apple Cinema 23 and 30 had hardwired power AND DVI in the same cable. 24vdc and DVI - hardwired.

Did you test the speakers at normal listening volume or just maxed out? I've never heard a stereo or set of speakers that sounds good at maximum volume but I've heard plenty that sound great at normal listening volumes. Jus' sayin'...

So strange, you'd expect the product designed to have a great screen, great speakers, and camera would be better than the laptop; but no.

THANK YOU for resonating the frustration I have with this monitor. So many people say this is a great value at $1600 and there is no way in hell that’s true. I’m confident I could pick out a solid display, webcam, mic, and speaker setup and STILL be under the price of this overpriced ips display.

Try the mac mini or studio. I thought these screens had pretty good video quality and are much nicer in person.

I don’t get it. It’s twice as thick as the iMac, costs more than an iMac, and has a non user friendly power cable and mounting options. How does apple manage to make such nice products but consistently with one major incredibly stupid and deal breaking design flaw. This is honestly worse than putting the charging port on the bottom of the Magic Mouse.

It feels like this is Apple’s brand now. It looks so great but they *have* to make it inconvenient somehow, and they would do that to a component that is so simple you wanna go to whoever approved the final design and whack him/her over the head.

For that price they should have made it a full M1 iMac that you can hook an external source up to. Also if you could have the iMac power cord with the ethernet adapter plugged in then it would be much more appealing as a laptop docking monitor.

I sure hope this unit doesn’t sell and they regret this item. I love my apple products but don’t just buy whatever they make. Still waiting for something to replace my all in one and this is definitely not the route I’m taking

Good speakers should be flat where you can hear every detail, after getting into vinyl and music you want flat headphones and flat speakers and use eq to adjust to your liking

the a13 is for center stage and the surround sound mics (neural engine) and 64gb of storage hard-wired inside the PCB, idk why 64gb, only about 3-5GB is used.

First thing I would do after unboxing is mount an IEC socket in the hole on the stand and splice in that power cable. Lol

You've seen monitors without detachable cables? I've been playing with them since the 80's and have never seen one with a fixed cable :o

This is especially hard to look at because Apple had the perfect solution from the G5 iMac: standard power connector with an end on the Apple-branded cable that makes it sit perfectly flush when plugged in. It meets the branding criteria AND lets professionals use existing cables.

Apple requires a dedicated proprietary tool to remove it. It’s literally a spool that’ll yank on it and it releases some lock.

There is a big issue with the display that reviews have not yet addressed. No its not the unacceptably horrendous webcam. The issue is that the monitor runs its own operating system (IOS) to manage the camera, microphone and speakers. Like any device running a consumer based operating system, it can't be run indefinitely without restarting it or you run into issues. If you don't restart your iPad or iPhone for weeks or months you will eventually experience all kind of issues. I got my studio display on March 18. yesterday my camera started acting up, then the microphone and speakers would stop working sporadically. After hours with Apple support it was determined the monitor needs to restart. BUT there is no way to do it, it has no power button and no way to actuality shut it down or reboot/restart properly. So the only way to do restart the display is to unplug it from the power source for a minute and plug it back in. We did so and its working fine again. However, doing it that way means you are crashing the build-in OS rather than properly restarting it. That of course can potentially damage the display just like crashing your computer every time you want to restart it.

A few years ago I walked into an Apple store and looked at some macbooks. An employee came to me smiling and glowing and asked me if I needed help. I asked them what processor the macbook was using (it was some Intel variant) and he looked at me like I was crazy. His answer was "I don't know but it should not matter". I'm sure that many people will buy this monitor just because it was made by Apple. It doesn't matter that there are better alternatives out there, for even less money. My Samsung M7 4k has airplay 2, a built in browser, built in Netflix, youtube , local tv channels, office 365 , remote PC, Mac, decent speakers, HDR (better not) and it is amazingly anti-reflective .......on the other side it is a VA panel with just 350 nits. Nevertheless it costs $300 for 32 inches and it is not 6 times worst than Apple , works AMAZING with my M1 mac mini and every single piece of Apple's ecosystem (although it is Samsung)., plus looks stunning on the metal base.....but I had enough change for a fantastic Fully arm!

If I had to guess, the internal justification for the permanent power cable, is all the problems with the ~2007-2015 era iMacs that if you tilted the display forward, then backwards, it would frequently disconnect the power cable *just enough* to kill power while still looking/feeling "plugged in", and this design cuts down on those tech support calls.

Oh, that attached cable is an absolute deal breaker! I was considering this display up until now. Bummer!
