@@MashITTech Sure thing. I ended up returning my M17 R3 earlier this week after 2 days of evaluating it. The fans at 100% emit a high-pitched whine/whistle like a tiny jet engine. Very taxing on the nerves if one is not wearing headphones/earbuds. My research shows that the R4 does it too since it's the same fans. Sticking with my M15 R1 (with RTX 2060) for now which doesn't do that.
Definitely thinking bout getting this beauty for the portability. I’m a fan of dell / alienware. Rarely have they let me down. My alienware aurora r6 is several years old and still going strong.
People always tell you to get a desktop but this is great for coding students like me it’s like I’m carrying the power of a beast desktop on my backpack.....
EXACTLY ! Im actually searching for a good laptop quite polyvalent for all type of programmation from web dev to game dev so i can code everywhere and everything without any problem and all of my friends are making fun of me cause I want to spend a lot of money on something not as performant as a desktop but they dont know the power of being able to carry our swiss army knife absolutly everywhere !
Its also great for work! Im looking to replace both my work laptop and gaming laptop (current acer predator m17) with this. The size compared to my acer with all the power is just great, perfect to go to work with too
Just bought this. It's on sale at Best Buy for $2050 with the 3070, 16gb ram, and the 1tb ssd. All dimensions are smaller compared to what I had before which was the 10 pound dated 17r4 with the 1060. People complain about the weight of this laptop but coming from an older version, this is half the weight.
@@Marcos-nk8zi I've had it since Tuesday and it runs like a dream. Been playing New World MMO. Was surprised to see no bloatware. It's not only lighter than what I had before but all dimensions are smaller yet still a 17.3" screen. They had the sale beginning of month, and now again but only until the 18th. There was only one store near me that still had them, and only 2 in stock. I'm sure AW is trying to clear them from retail in prep for new models.
@@whanethewhip that’s good to hear man I actually went and snagged the x17 from there instead of the m17 and it’s working like a dream, picked it up for $2600 too after tax since it was on sale
One of the best reviews I've seen on this laptop. I appreciate the time you took to comment on the sound of the fans and even showing the meter. It helped answer a question I had about a high pitch fan noise I get on my new m17 system. I used that same sound meter program and saw a spike indicating the high pitch noise. I'm glad to see that is not the case with all the m17r4.
Hi.. I've waited for a review on this laptop.. seems to me.. you are the first to prepare breakfast... thank you.. thank you. Ordered this same spec but the 144 hz screen. And 32gb ram..
Thanks mate, and it makes a nice change, we are usually late to the party 😂 I think the 144 is a good choice for most people as you get the option to switch to Optimus and get improved battery life 👍
This laptop is a beast. I have it. It is amazing. Perfect for massive graphic 2D files and will play most games at their highest settings. You do need to constantly have it connected to a power source or the battery drains quickly if you are playing a game. Lots of color customization options for the mouse, keyboard and even the frequency of the lights. Its like having a portable desktop that will last for years.
@@infinite_xiao5483 AGA also does not work on Alienware GSYNC laptop displays because the monitor is physically connected to the internal GPU and you cannot disable it to run the external GPU. I learned this from personal experience 4 years ago with the A17R4. I wish Alienware would be more transparent about this. It’s a pretty big deal.
I ordered one but with UHD as not for gaming only photoediting. When ordering talk to sales chat and ask for any deals, I got £500 off Get an external battery with high AH
I have an XPS 15 from 2017 and I purchased the M15 R3 in Jan. The color was off some on the M15 R3. I had to manually make it more accurate to match the color of my XPS 15. The M15 colors were warmer. Once you match the colors then the screen is great. I ultimately return the M15 since the 3070s were coming out.
140 Watts!!! Amazing. I was worried that they capped it at 115 w when it was announced, but I have the r4 3070 i7 laptop on hand and the performance was surprising me! I know why now 😁
Yeah, it really impressed me too especially as last years was capped at 115w! It’s been given the highest allocation of watts nvidia allow on a laptop 👍
A feature or lack thereof, which is not mentioned by dell is that there is no windows hello support. Ie face recognition. Something I think really should be supported on a new laptop of this spec…..and price point. Prior models of m17 seemed to have supported it, but it’s missing got the 360Hz screen….
Thank you for this! I went for the 3060. I’m using a laptop with a1650 so honestly anything is an upgrade for me. None of the games that I want to play (or in the future) really warrant paying for a 3070. I couldn’t really care about 4k. I want 1080 and at least 144fps. 3070 definitely seems “future proof” but I’ve had this laptop for years and there hasn’t been a single game I couldn’t play.
I'm still using a 1080 and the difference between it and a 3060 is negligible. The 3070 on the other hand is more close to the 3080 in my opinion with the 3080 being only 10-15% better, not to mention the added heat and fan noise. Definately not worth upgrading to the 3080. I think the 3070 is the sweet spot.
@@MashITTech I didn't realize how much demand there is for this card. Apparently crypto miners are buying all of them. Not gonna mine on this lappy but I suppose one could, till it burned up :)
I just bought this same exact laptop today, I dunno why I'm watching this review lol. This is the best review for it though hands down 😀 Edit: purchased for $2,225 with tax.
Excellent review! I just picked one up today on sale… replacing my 4 year old desktop… having gotten it $400 off I couldn’t be happier! You won me as a subscriber as well 👍🤟
I own the Alienware 15R4 non-OC version, The problem with the laptop are: - common usage cpu throttle and in-game throttle - the fan can’t keep the GTX 1070 colder under 95 degrees Celsius, - the keyboard sometimes doesn’t respond - battery 99wH last only 2,5 hours These are the only problems that Alienware laptop usually have
Great review I am definitely going to get this laptop. I am using an HP and it gets very hot when I am DJ'ing with it I need a laptop that has better cooling. This M17 should work much better.
Haha I have ordered a lot of dell laptops over the years and they have never delivered over the weekend. They normally email you the day before they deliver 👍
Just order me one of these. I went for the i9 32gb ram 360hz screen 1.5tb ssd and nvidia 3080. I first gaming pc ever so I’m a complete noob when it comes to computers but I am looking forward to learning. I cannot wait until may 5th when it comes in!
Hi Evan, congrats! Hope you enjoy it. If it is your first gaming pc then check out my tweaking tutorials for m15r4 as they are essentially the same machine and if you have quest when it arrives just ask away 👍
Hey, I just upgraded from Asus X750jn to this laptop. I absolutely love it! It's insanely fast, the design is awesome, and when I've decided to download some games on it, I barely experience any lag. I'm normally play games on consoles, but I absolutely love this laptop. Oh, and just a curious question, how does this laptop compare to the likes of the PS5 and Xbox series X?
So. I've used a cheap $400 Toshiba laptop for the past 10 years. I've always drooled at the Alienware stuff since I was a kid. I finally splurged and got an m17 r4 with the mobile 3080 16gb gpu. I'm beyond excited, and If that toshiba lasted me 10 years... this will last me 100!
I just got the alienware M17 R4 with 16gb ram, a 3070, rgb per keyboard, 360hz refresh rate, 2 512 gb ssds, all for 1400$ off of the alienware refurbished site after taxes, and I am shocked to not see one scratch or blemish or anythiing! Not everyone"s experience will be the same, but its definitely worth the risk, because you better believe I was ready to send it back. I used the DPA so i didnt pay a dime out of pocket.
I usually thought alienware design is rubbish for their gaming laptop line up, but this iteration since r2 are simply gorgeous. Those design is exquisite, cant believe something gammerish can look asthetic like this, no other brand can do this.
The overall turn off I got from this laptop is the "hybrid power design". Basically it's dell's way of saying "Hey we're shipping this laptop out that's capable of reaching near-pc speeds but we implemented this 'feature' so your laptop is in a constant stage of charging." To summarize, they ship these laptops with inadequate chargers and it ultimately throttles your system regardless of temperatures...
Thank you so much for the review. It was really informative. Hopefully when the new 45w i7 8 core CPUs (if rumours are correct) arrive in a few months, this laptop will be even better. It will be really interesting in a few months how Dell will update the Alienware M17 and the XPS 17. Thankfully I can wait till June / July before deciding.............
I have a M17R3, i7 10875h or f, 32 GB of ram, white, 2070 super, 360hz 1080p and I fkn love the performance. I gave it to the wife though because she had tech envy. I recently got a Ryzen R10 build so I'm good lol
Was about to order this but they no longer offer the 4k monitor on the m17 r4 and the 51m r2. Hope they bring their 4k UHD screen back would like to buy it but dell and their horrible customer service can't give me an answer why they're gone. Their customer service is horrible. They're all from India.
I have the RTX 3080 version of this laptop (32GB RAM, 4K). It performs brilliantly. Insanely fast gaming and productivity. I paid ~ $3k USD for it and regret nothing.
Finally there is nice a gaming laptop without optimus! I have had so many problems with newer (and faster) machines where the system "forgot" to change the graphic card, or g-sync didn't want to work... I rather have the nvidia card all the time.
I got this Alienware m17 R4 w/3070 laptop to be able to use for creative purposes and am seriously contemplating sending my laptop back. It is an amazing laptop when the fans are below 25%. Even with nothing running in the background, simple internet browsing and office work will trigger the heat to rise and the fans to kick on. The fans emit a constant high pitch whine when the CPU reaches about 62C (CPU fan at 31% and the system fan at 41%). I have overclock disabled, thermal at quiet, and power at balanced. But the high pitch sound is maddening. I've tried everything from manually setting the fan offset to 25% or smooth line to keep the fans low until about 70C but unfortunately, the computer overrides the settings and there is no way I have found to keep them off. Another observation is that in the task manager, the command center and windows apps default to use the NVIDIA GPU and the device manager has the intel driver hidden. I suspected using the Nvidia was the cause of the temps rising and fans, but disabling the Nvdia driver, as a test, did not keep the fans low so it appears the main issue is the factory fan offset and CPU temp. Just be aware that if you have a quiet room and want to use this for dual work/play purposes the fans may be irritating.
Hi Craig, I completely agree with you on the fan noise, this is the biggest downside of the alienware (and most slim gaming laptops). Have you tried undervolting the m17r4? I have almost finished editing a video on thermal performance on the m17 and in the video I undervolt and run on the quiet profile and fan noise is much reduced.
@@MashITTech I've been experimenting with the command center fan settings and throttlestop. I haven't had any crashes in windows with a -240mV core and -100mV cache. Speed shift is at 128 and also enabled in TPL. I can mostly keep the temps between 50-60C if I have turbo disabled or set the turbo limit to the baseclock of 2.2Mhz. In the command center, I've go a smooth line fan offset to keep the fans always running around 20% to hopefully keep them away from the annoying 30% or greater. I'm going to do more testing on if g-sync is contributing to the CPU temps as well.
@@MashITTech I just learned this laptop has a mux switch fn+F7. I know it is supposed to boost gaming performance by removing the Optimus overhead, but surprisingly after engaging this, I found my CPU temps dropped further than with throttlestop alone (disabled turbo, cache and core undervolt). My CPU and GPU both stay around 42-45C and the fans are no longer randomly turning on (was happening over 50C). My theory is that the CPU no longer has to do graphics processing so it runs cooler. This is a good workaround for those like me wanting to use this as an office laptop during the workday without the noise of the fans on video conferencing. Mux switch may be a good test for content on your site.
Thanks for the review. I recently ordered the 2021 m17 with 8-core i7-10870H, 32gb RAM, Nvidia rtx 3080 16GB, 1tb m.2 SSD, 360hz screen with sRGB and gsync. Have been looking for reviews and this is the first comprehensive review I have found. Totally agree that the price is very high for these laptops, but after watching your video, I'm very excited to recieve my laptop and look forward to the blazingly fast performance. Sure wish I could have gone with the i9 processor upgrade, but it was an additional $500 I just didn't have.
I don’t think you will See much benefit with the i9 as they just run too hot. I posted a follow up video if you are interested where I look at power profiles, tcc and undervolting 👍
Bad move I would say, why didn't you wait 1-2 month for the new Intel Gen 11 Tiger Lake CPU? You are basically run a superb system on a last Gen CPU 10 month old, which in this case will be the bottleneck of your system
@@ravenmcclaw1725 that may be true if I were going to be getting into OC, or really heavy gaming sessions. I won't be utilizing the laptop to its fullest extent, so the top tier i7 with the cooler temp is good for my purpose.
Hello I know you commented a while back but I just received this laptop and my battery life is like an hour and 15 without gaming and I’mjot sure if that’s how it’s supposed to be and it run hot along with that maybe I don’t know what I’m doing but the F1-F12 isn’t working like I can’t turn the volume up with the button or do the brightness did you have that problem or should I take it back
2500 Pounds?!?!?!? WTF man you could get the same spec in North America with only roughly 2500 USD! My heart literally clentched when I heard that 2500-Pound figure
The price is crazy! Dell just had a 20% voucher which has now expired but at least that made the price more reasonable. The price on gaming laptops is getting more out of hand year on year 😭
Not a actual problem you think about it. They make more money in the UK so if its cost the same 2500 “money”, they are probably paying less then people on the US 🤔
Ah well done mate, at least they refunded you. What spec did you go for? And yes, I am doing a performance deep dive video next so will look at this as well as undervolting and the alienware profiles👍
I had the 144hz last year and it was still a great panel plus you should have the option to swap between gsync and optimus so you can have better battery life if you need it
wow, what a beast! I am desperate to get the 3080 in but I have blown my months budget for laptops! I will try and get one next month though as I would love to see how it compares against the 3070. Hope you enjoy your laptop when it arrives and please let us know your thoughts :)
@@MashITTech Alienware just announced M15 R5 with Ryzen 5000 series. Idk if they have 3080 but they have 3070, 1440p option. RAM is also not soldered. Please review if you get the Ryzen version :D
I will be ordering the ryzen version the second it is available to order 😂 I have heard it is only 3060 and 3070 but let’s hope they add more options later. Will get the 1440p too
So I just got off the phone with a Dell Representative and they are saying the CHERRY MX KEYBOARD IS OUT OF STOCK! Anyone else’s order was delayed because of this and now have to cancel?!?!
Waiting for the 1440p version to buy. 1440p 360hz in a laptop sounds too good to be true honestly, but I'll wait and see! Even if the 1440p is 240hz I'd still be impressed. 144hz maybe not.
I have no idea why people CONSTANTLY complain about the fan noise. Gaming laptops are to a point now, that they are similar and or better compared to their desktop counterparts. Meaning, they have A LOT of high tech, heat sensitive components jammed into a small space, so they need to be cooled appropriately! If the fan noise bothers you all so much, do what the rest of us do and get a external fan! It is quite simple. You lower the fan speeds on the laptop internally and use the external fans to balance everything out. Problem solved. I love my M17 and could care less about the fan noise. Headset, duh? Also, if any of you are bothered by the price tag. Look at what a 3070 costs. That is not factoring in the cost of the CPU, ram and the brand name. It is a great price! My M17 easily keeps pace with my desktop and it is running a 2080, 32gb ram and a i9 109k! That is saying something.
Hi Russel, you make some good points, thank you. I am guilty of not liking loud fan noise but as you say once you are wearing a decent headset you don't hear it anyway :)
Hopefully you will enjoy it! I have loved my time with them (hence all the videos). I do need to get some msi’s in though too but there is no stock anywhere at the moment
BTW there is a new option in the R4 BIOS to Limit the CPU power so that should keep the fans under control, all the heat on that thing mainly comes from the Intel CPU
Yes that’s the TCC setting, I have taken a look at it and will include it in the upcoming video. Not sure it’s as useful as just using throttlestop but some people may want to use it
So I'm a proud owner of an m15 R4 with this same CPU, and a 3060, 16GB, DSotM Chassis, 144Hz Advanced Optimus Screen, 512GB SSD, 4-zone RGB keyboard. I purchased it for a great price of $1,465.00 USD. It's an awesome little laptop, and with your help I was able to tweak some excellent performance out of it. (10714 Cinebench R23 multi-core, 9090 Time Spy, with temps well under control and reasonable fan noise) This weekend I was able to purchase the m17 R4 with the same CPU and a 3070, 16GB of RAM, DSotM Chassis, 144Hz screen. 512GB SSD, and the per-key RGB keyboard for a phenomenal price of $1,565.00 USD. I feel like I stole the laptop! The m15 R4 will now move to the wife. She is quite happy and so am I! I just wished I was allowed to upgrade the RAM to 32GB, but the sale configuration would not allow me to. (Oh well...) I have a delivery date of May 19th. Not to bad for a May 2nd order date.
Good review. Keeping me sane whilst I wait for mine. Got a bargain M17 R4 with i9, 32GB, 3080 and 2TB...£2223! (No VAT as in Guernsey, plus discount code from work!) Replacing my old gaming desktop so hope it is as good as it looks!
wow that is a good price! let me know how you get on with it when it arrives. I have done a few tweaking videos for this (some on m15 and others on m17 but they are essentially the same except cooling is better on m17) might be handy unless you are already familiar with undervolting, TCC and msi afterburner
@@MashITTech Yea, it was a great price. To be honest, I wasn't really looking at laptops but I guess like a lot of people, trying to find stock of a 3070/3080 to build desktop seemed to be nigh on impossible- even going straight to distributor. Delivery for laptop is this Thursday apparently. I'll definitely go through your vids on undervolting etc. New to me. The thermals are the only thing worrying me...well that an a failed DIMM...seems rather silly they've chosen to solder them on. Beginning to think I should have taken the extra warranty!
Yeah, I have been wanting to upgrade my desktop for ages but have now just given up and upgraded my area 51m instead! Hope you enjoy the laptop when it arrives, let me know how you get on with it and ask away if you need any advice 👍
@@MashITTech well, the laptop didn't last long. Received today and I'm returning it! Nothing visually wrong with it, and games run ok but one thing I didn't seem to factor in is me being left handed and the constant clicking on the offset mouse pad as I WASD. Also, screen slightly offset to my head due to way I angle the laptop. Feel disappointed as laptop looks and plays amazing- I'm just a knob haha. So just placed an order for the Aurora R12 desktop with a 3080 and i9 KF, 32GB, but just 1TB. Order just confirmed. I've gone a bit Alienware mad for the first time ever. Picked up keyboard and mouse too. Honesty, it's a wonder they make any money. The PC was £1900ish...20% Dell advantage discount plus another 20% off as no VAT. Then on the keyboard and mouse I got 25% off plus another 20%. The Dell monitor went from £470 to £253. So all in for £2400 - give or take....now just have to wait until Aug 3 at the latest apparently. Hoping I get my money back on laptop haha. Wife doesn't know yet 😳. Cheers for your contributions though. Hope channel grows big. **Edit** just reading Alienware Reddit and people are saying if you're order an R12 with a 3080, don't expect it before November lol! Sheeeet. Doomed. **edit 2** and now I'm reading the R12 has RAM issues, and has done for a while with no fix? Urgh. First go at buying pre built and I'm regretting it!
These laptops can barel6 handle 1440p with games. If you play competitive games 1080p is alot better. If all you play is single player games than yes 1440p is better
The tool is called riva tuner and comes with msi afterburner which is a must have bit of software, it allows you to overclock and undervolt. I am just doing a follow up video on the m17 r4 performance and I will show off the msi afterburner more in that video
Ah the joys of high dpi scaling. Open msi afterburner, grab a magnifying glass 😂 choose settings, go to the far right tab and change the skin to the large version, hit apply and it will increase its size for you
They took my upgraded power supply and put in a less powerful one then returned the15r3 completely crooked. Mind you it was a brand new upgraded power supply.
Thank you. As per the R3 (which I just answered you on) the ram is soldered on so cannot be changed. You can add more storage though as it has 3 m.2 slots for SSDs
how is the display clarity compared to razer laptop ? i wanted to see that inperson but its not available as showcase anywhere. im concerned about display clarity and cherry mx keyboard.
Dell could make this so much better if they didn't solder that RAM and put a Mux switch on all models. I have a clevo with G sync and mux switch for example. Also, Dell needs to look at Eluktronics from the US on how to do a command center. There's is super customizable and clean, pretty much the opposite of Alienware's. Nice review though. Never seen this channel and pretty impressed!
Thanks Jonathan, I couldn't agree more with your comment. It feels like they are put minimal effort into each release but charging a fortune! command centre has not changed since the first m15 and poor then. I love the look of the machine and it performs well but it really could be top tier
I think mine is about a week away, really looking forward to getting that in and seeing how it compares to this 17! I do love the keyboard layout and size more in the 15” but prefer a 17” screen! When are they going to start using foldout displays 😂
@@MashITTech Yeah, thanks for doing the m15 vs m17 comparison. The centralized keyboard layout tipped the scales for me. Keep up the good content dude.. keen to see anything on the Alienware command center 👍
That’s a difficult one to answer because the way dell works the fan profiles means that the temps remain the same but fans spin lower. What I will try and do is run it on max fans and perform the test then I may be able to answer you
@@MashITTech Thx a lot, Mash for the fast respond!!! You made my day!! Yesterday i ordered the full package, but i need the option of more RAM für video editing. I canceled now my order ;-) THX!!!
Thank you 😊 there is a link description where I test different usb c chargers but if you want the best charger get the dell 130w usbc charger for xps. Fan noise between 15 and 17 is very similar but slightly lower on 17. I am working on a m15r4 video at the moment and then will compare them
Hey , can you explain which panel has the MUX and which has Optimus ? and the Pro and cons of both . I was looking for 144hz with gsync , which tech do you think it has, MUX or Optimus
@@avinashchaudhary514 The 144Hz will have both a MUX and Optimus (just like the R3 did) The MUX switch basically switches between Optimus mode (for greater battery life) and dedicated connection to the GPU (for full performance) You might be getting confused with "Advanced Optimus" which does not require a MUX switch, but none of the Alienware laptops use Advanced Optimus just yet
Thank you Ryan for explaining this, I am still really confused as to how Optimus was different from Advance Optimus!!! Me being an architectural student need great battery life for classes as well as rendering power for projects , what would you recommend?? I was looking as Asus Strix as well
@@avinashchaudhary514 Check out this link for an explanation between Optimus and Advanced Optimus: jarrods.tech/nvidia-introduces-advanced-optimus-g-sync-for-all/
@@avinashchaudhary514 If you want to stick with Alienware though, definitely get the 144Hz G-Sync screen. Users report between 4-5 hours battery life in Optimus mode when just browsing the internet. The Asus Strix though using the Ryzen chipset reports 8 hours battery life when just browsing! The Asus however only has Optimus, so gaming performance might be slightly reduced
Haha thanks mate. We only started 7 months ago so I guess we are still the new kids on the block. We haven't managed to get any of the ROGs in yet (supply issues in UK) but we will.
Many thanks for your review, I find it precise, honest and one of the best I've seen so far. I have an offer to buy one, but with 144Hz screen and 3060 Nvidia card. In your opinion is it worthy to get one for 1,600 GBP in the UK, I got massive discount, however I'm still not sure as it got 16Gb ram and 1Tb SSD. Many-many thanks for your advice
Love the review, super helpful, you talk about the keyboard but did not mention if it was their mechanical key version or the reg, on the fence with this laptop and the ROG Strix G17 G713QR, just don't know if the wait for the ryzen 9 5900hx will be worth it over this lower intel.
Thank you :) Unfortunately the cherry mechanical keyboard was not even announced when I did my review so I wasn't even aware of them. I love mechanical keyboards though so I will get one in as soon as soon as they launch in the UK. I haven't tested any of the 5000 series amd cpu laptops yet but I do have a couple on order, so reviews will be coming soon.
Finally someone with the rtx 3070! Can you please tell me the max tgp of the vga? You can check this in the Nvidia control panel system information (the button is in the bottom left corner),.it displays it with the latest driver. Also, is lcd overdrive enabled in the bios? If you run ufo test can you see overshoot ?
Sorry, I am a bit late but thank you Ekryzm for answering. There is no overdrive in BIOS, I tested UFO thoroughly and no overshoot. It gave me a really crisp UFO image at 360hz!
Really good video, I'm choosing from M17R4 and MSI GE76, I think I will choose M17R4 then. But not sure if I should wait for a 1440p resolution on this laptop since I don't play fps games.

Hey there, thanks for the nice review. I am looking for a good gaming laptop right now.. how about the fan noise on this one? Some people report really annoying fan noises? Can you compere it to other newer gaming laptop and is this one worse? Thanks in advance :-)
Hi, glad you liked it. The fans aren't the most pleasant but I would put it on par with other slim gaming laptops like the Razer Blade etc. If you follow my tweaks with TCC and undervolt/multipliers you can drop the temps and fan noise considerably without loosing much performance (and still performs better than most other laptops with the 10870h chip)
Just got this laptop and didn't realize the battery life sucks. Only lasted 1hr 20mins on a full charge while browsing. Any tips to make it last longer when browsing?
If you like this one it is all about getting a good voucher from Dell. I just got an Alienware X17 with 30% off as I waited for a good voucher. Alternatively the legion 7 is very well priced if you can find one for sale
Thx for the great review. I look forward for the more in-depth review, because I‘ve ordered my r4 just 2 weeks ago and expect delivery next week. I do have a question though which you can maybe adress in your next review: is it possible to use an Thunderbolt docking station with a dedicated power button to start the laptop?
Thanks, currently working towards the in depth performance video. Hope you enjoy your alienware when it arrives. With regards to a thunderbolt dock, no I have not managed to get a power button to turn on the laptop, I have only managed to get this working on business class machines (ie xps 9500 or thinkpads)
@@MashITTech Thats too bad because on my setup the laptop is not so easily accessible and I really hoped that it would be possible to use a power button on my docking station... But thank you anyway and keep the reviews coming - especially when you get the Alienware 38“ monster 😋
You can just sleep your machine when not in use then wake from external keyboard. Or do you turn your laptop right off when not in use? I keep telling myself I don’t actually need the 38” but I know I will end up spontaneously ordering after a couple of beers
Check out the m15r4 and m17r4 I open both up and show the internals. Basically, you just remove a few screws on the base and lift off the cover. There is 2x m.2 80mm SSDs one will be populated unless you have the RAID version. There is also a 30mm m.2 but there are expensive and harder to get hold of
Lenovo Legion 5 pro is available for about 1800 bucks with the same 140w 3070 but also ryzen 7, 1440p 165hz goodness, 16:10 screen, better thermals and eshutter.
Yep, I have one on order. The only downside to the 5 pro is the chassis has a lot of plastics so it’s not quite as premium. I have the legion 5 and love that machine but taking that thing apart is not fun with all those plastic clips
