Aligning objects and verts with Machin3 Tools

I wanted to cover something that seems to cause some confusion, the different aligning options within Machin3 Tools. They are fast, effective and have some great extra functions but.... which tool is which and where they are found can be a bit confusing.

For the last 48 hours I have been trying to get Align verts to work with Machin3tools. This included: uninstalling and reinstalling Machin3tools. Uninstalling and reinstalling ALL my addons. Upgrading to Blender 4.2 Upgrading to Machin3tools 1.9 Uninstalling and reinstalling Blender 4.2 Turning off every Keybinding for Alt A on EVERY addon and the default (which is deselect verts). Then, when I've finally after stewing in my failure, I come to youtube to watch Gator Chis videos when I notice the thumbnail for "Aligning objects and verts with Machin3 Tools" in my reccomendations. On a whim I click it and... sure enough... at the 1:32 second mark I hear "But also, and this is where the confusion comes from, there is an align pie as well..." Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go quietly stare into a rainstorm while a grandfather clock ticks loudly in the background.

Sorry to hear all you've gone through to get it working. Glad I could help sort the problem for you. Hope you don't feel you need to spend too long staring.... I find the process is sped up by listening to "Hello darkness my old friend" 😉

Don't worry, it's normal with addons from Machin3... they are so complete that they can be overwhelming 😅I noticed my understanding of these addons is growing with my knowledge of Blender. Keep pushing 💪

That Vertex alignment is so good i'll have to get machin3 tools now!

The tools and pies it have save so much time. I don't know what I would do without it now.

At 7:59 yeah you can use machine tools to align those vertices, but this is also done easily without it, and without having to "guesstimate" the exact z-position. Simply select the vertices you want to align and in this case press S (for scale), Z (for z-axis) and then 0. This will put all the selected vertices on the same z-axis. However the z-axis position will be sort of like a median point of all the vertices selected, whereas Machine lets you choose bottom or up, to either align towards the bottom or top vertex.

Yep, I also find that's quite hand to ensure that you have a perfectly flat face but if you have Machin3 Tools I think this is generally faster.

Haha. To be fair until recently I didn't know. I assumed it was a group of people from the quality/range of the add ons.

Machin3 Tools - Align - "Other Functions": At 9:00: With regards to the problem using the "Align Straighten", yielding a result where the straightened vertices do not line up with the adjacent edge ones, here is a solution. A better way to achieve this is to select your verts or edges and use the Add-on LoopTools' Gstretch function (comes with blender, but needs to be enabled). In the "Adjust Last Operation" (F9) panel (the one that pops up in the bottom left of the 3D view), set the Method to "Project" and the verts should be straightened AND lined up with the others!

Love your videos, but your example of manually aligning the objects using native options is the most laborious way possible! In native blender, you can select both objects and then right click on any of the location values (or rotation, or scale values), then select Copy All To Selected. Machin3 Tools is still easier, but it's not that rudimentary without it!
@ArtisansofVaul
@ArtisansofVaul Год назад
Thats totally fair and correct, you're absolutely right you can do that. Though (and this has been a big revelation to me so thanks!) I did think you could only copy the "total" location (so x, y AND z) not just one of them, which wouldn't really give the same result. Though having a look at it now you can select "Copy single to selected" which I had no idea about. So thats some good new knowledge!

6:19 in Maya its called snapping "retain component spacing" easy and much faster and versatile. I miss these options in Blender. While working with Maya it felt so simply, nothing special, but compared to Blender it was just awesome

Snap Base makes this a bit easier now as well. But I find just hitting AltA pretty fast.

Great and important tutorial but you forgot the most incredible feature of it which is align to edge in align pie. Select two objects in obj mode, then in edit, select 2 edges that you want aligned together. Than menu appears align to edge, and this feature is not in any vanilla blender or else, and can even be impossible to achieve manually in some cases. Suggest u try it up!

Thanks a lot! I'll totally have a look at that! Does it orient/rotate them too? I'll be checking that out when I'm home.

Just stumbled upon this! Another great bite-sized explanation video ΛₒV! Thanks for sharing! Machin3 tools offers so much functionality. I'm barely scratching the surface in my knowledge here I'd wager! At around the 4:50 mark (when trying to set the origin to say a selected face), there is a native Blender way of doing this (to my knowledge, I don't think there is an imbedded add-on that needs to be enabled for this - but I'm not 100% sure). With a face selected, simply press Ctrl + Alt + X (this brings up the origin menu - which I kind of equate to Shift + S for the 3d cursor one) and swipe straight up to choose the option "origin to selected". Of course, having the Machin3 Tools add-on is still worth getting/using, as it's feature set is far more vast in making life easier than Blender's general functionalities. Cheers!

Great tip man, thanks so much! I'm curious about this as I was trying to help someone in nature Blender to find a way of moving the cursor to a face (or a selection of edges) and the cursor orienting to those face or edges. Is that possible in this menu?
@norm_olsen
@norm_olsen 9 месяцев назад
@@ArtisansofVaul To move the 3d cursor to a face, select the face, press Shift + S and choose "Cursor to selected" (or just swipe straight down). Is this what you are looking for? Oh, missed the orienting part.. hmm.. that's a good question!
@ArtisansofVaul
@ArtisansofVaul 9 месяцев назад
@@norm_olsen yeah that doesn't orient the cursor which could be useful for setting it as the rotation axis.
@norm_olsen
@norm_olsen 9 месяцев назад
@@ArtisansofVaul The only solution I can come up with in regards to cursor orientation is to attack this issue in two steps. Select the cursor tool from the left hand side panel (just below box selection), then press N top bring up the right hand side panel, and from within the Active Tool panel, enable "Surface project" and choose "Geometry" from the orientation dropdown menu. Then click place the cursor on the desired face (which should now be orientated correctly), then Shift + S and choose the cursor to selection option. As for edges though, this I am not sure unfortunately :(

@@norm_olsen 👍🏻 I think Machine Tools being free makes it the easy solution in comparison. But thanks so much. 👍🏻👍🏻

A great help, as always. What I really would be interested in is how to use rigged characters as basefor clothing them, then pose them as wished and print the figure. Could you do a tutorial on this one? That really would be great. Greetings form Germany
@ArtisansofVaul
@ArtisansofVaul 2 года назад
Nice suggestion. I will probably need to break this into different parts as it might be a lot for one tutorial, I did already have rigging on the list but I can add the clothing too. Though I would say that for 3D printing I normally sculpt most cloth instead of using physics systems to make them move when it is on a model.

Is there a way to turn off the machine tools pie wheel changes and get back my ability to use 1 2 3 to switch between editing modes? I like what Mt is capable of but can't stand all the UI tweaks
@Bad.Rabbit

I actually like a lot of the pies, but I'm a huge keyboard shortcut guy so I need my 1 2 3 back lol
@ArtisansofVaul
@ArtisansofVaul 2 года назад
There is. Go to the add-ons menu in preferences and then on the drop-down deactivate the Modes Pie. BUT.... You might want to see if you can get used to it. It really does speed everything up when you're sued to it and Machin3 Tools then allocates the 1 and 3 to being the smart vert option and the clean-up tool. And they are absolutely fantastic to be able to have at a fingers reach.
