One of the most acclaimed and ambitious feature debuts in recent memory, Hu Bo’s award-winning masterpiece is a testament to the power of personal filmmaking. In this excerpt from an interview accompanying the film’s streaming premiere on the Criterion Channel, programmer Aliza Ma offers some invaluable context on the rebellious era of Chinese filmmaking that gave rise to it and the sociopolitical turbulence that serves as the story’s backdrop.

An incredible masterpiece that's very moving in its depiction of an existential quest for something better or more. It's very sad and kinda depressing but the way Hu Bo follows these 4 characters, these 3 generations, makes it emotionnally rewarding for the viewers. The film plays brilliantly with time. The way we perceive it, the way it's displayed on screen and of course the way it's shot in these beautiful long takes very close to the face of the chatacters... You definitely feel these 3h40' in the guts. Saw it 2 times in a theater in Belgium. The more you dive deep into this existential quest, the more you'll get moved by Hu Bo's intimate and personal work of a lifetime. Definitely check out this superb sensory experience.

If you find yourself on the fence about watching this movie just do it. This video doesn't really convey how crazy the long takes with a blurred backround are. No film like it.

I don't remember when I added this film to my IMDb watchlist, but reading these first few lines about it on Wikipedia made me sad: "An Elephant Sitting Still (Chinese: 大象席地而坐, "Dà Xiàng Xídì Érzuò") is a 2018 Chinese film written, directed and edited by Hu Bo. The first and last film of the novelist-turned-director Hu, who committed suicide soon after finishing his film on 12 October 2017 at the age of 29, it is based on a story with the same title from his 2017 novel Huge Crack."

I’m six years younger the Hu Bo. I’m a filmmaker as well and I’m sad a filmmaker from my generation dead at 29 I’ll be that Age next year. I’ll be honest I have my moments we’re i hope to be dead before 30. But there a lot of people I promised to live for. I read the filmmaker was upset about about having to cut his film and that’s what pushed him to end his life I think there’s more to the story but I understand the feeling making movies keeps me sain I also loose my mind

The movie had several technical faults. On one intance, you can see an actor passing below camera to get to a right position. A few times, it sounds like you can hear the camera crew coughing and making other noises. On some street scenes, you can see random people staring into camera. Why are these things in the movie? Was it a stylistic choice, amateurish film making or perhaps the director just didn't care. Nevertheless, it was an interesting immersive experience.

Could someone suggest more films and film makers part of the degenerate generation she mentions at 0:46 ?

I think she refers to the Post-Sixth Generation independent filmmakers. There is a distributor called dGenerate Films which brings independent movies into the US, so I think they are called like that because of this. You can check their catalog and philosophy here: www.dgeneratefilms.com/
