Over the course of a single, suspenseful day, the troubled lives of four desperate people unfold in this resonant film about the human condition - director Hu Bo’s first and, tragically, final feature.
This film is very personal to me. Its not for everyone. But it is for me. And to all the people who felt a personal connection to it, I just wanna give you a tight hug.
Thank you. I couldn't help crying when the movie finished and the theme song started. I see myself in the movie so I also feel a personal connection to it.
A note to add about the analogy between the four characters and the classical string quartet: He associates Wei Bu with the 1st violin; Huang Ling with the 2nd violin; Yu Cheng with the viola; and Wang Jin with the cello. There is counterpoint between the four characters based on their respective roles, but they add up to a complete musical whole.
One of the greats of modern cinema right there, paying respects to young talented blood that its now gone... Cinema lost a genius too soon. He was special and made one of the best films of the last decade.
I think Elephant's ending is much more optimistic however, with the sign of hope being heard in the distance. The whale is a similar sign of hope, but at the end it's laying dead and ugly on the streets, as the old man looks at it in despair. Two of the best films of all time (Satantango also)
It’s so real. Not only in the movie but also in the process of filming this movie. Still feel so bad for the loss of the great young director Hu Bo. But this movie deserves watching.
If it wasn't that long, would it really make the point it intends to make? I mean, watching something this long with these topics. I think we get exactly the feeling we're suppose to get
