I’ll watch The Fabelmans soon, but Tár and Women Talking aren’t coming out where I live until march so I’ve only watched 7 of them so far, but here’s my ranking: 7. All Quiet On the Western Front (I really like this film so it feels wrong to put it last, but I just really enjoyed all the nominated films that I’ve watched) 6. Elvis (My dad is the biggest Elvis fan so I’ve grown up with his music and seeing videos of him and I was truly amazed by Austin Butler’s performance) 5. Top Gun: Maverick (Fantastic blockbuster and even tho I enjoyed Avatar more on the first watch, this one was way better on a rewatch) 4. Avatar: The Way of Water (Basic story obviously, but I was completely in awe watching this) 3. Triangle of Sadness (One of the funniest films of the year imo and I really appreciated the three parts in different ways) 2. The Banshees of Inisherin (loved everything about this film except for the ending being a bit too abrupt for me) 1. Everything Everywhere All At Once (Not even close, one of my favourite films of all time)

Haven’t seen all of them. Just gonna rank the ones I have seen. 1.) EEAO 2.) Banshees of Inisherin 3.) Tar 4.) Triangle of Sadness 5.) Women Talking 6.) Elvis 7.) Top Gun Maverick Going to see Avatar tonight. I considered waiting, but just wanted to put that out there. I’m expecting to rank it at #8 tbh but I’d love to be surprised and have it ranked much higher. Still feel so burned that Decision to Leave got snubbed, it deserves to be here so bad! Looking at this list though, it was a pretty good year for movies. To clarify, I also don’t hate or dislike any of these movies.

1: Banshees - 10/10 2: EEAAO - 9/10 3: Tar - 9/10 4: Top Gun: Maverick - 8/10 5: Avatar: The Way Of Water - 7/10 6: The Fabelmans - 6/10 7: Elvis - 5/10 Haven’t seen Triangle, Women Talking, or All Quiet yet. Obviously, I don’t think Elvis should even been in consideration for Best Picture, I didn’t even think Austin Butler was as amazing as others say. Tom Hanks was really cringe, and it was also way way way too long. Snubs: Nope - 10/10 The Northman - 9/10 The Whale - 8/10

1. The Banshees of Inisherin [great piece of literature and those powerhouse performances, that cinematography and that score 👏] 2. Tar [another literary masterpiece with Cate Blanchett at the center ruling the roost, meaningful cinematography and great direction] 3. EEAAO [Yeoh to Hsu to Quan to Curtis, this film has memorable characters and even more memorable style of filmmaking] 4. All Quiet on the Western Front [flawless in the technical departments, does the narrative better than recent war films like 1917 which was a visual masterpiece too] 5. Triangle of Sadness [Ostlund's "The White Lotus", great dialogues and a smooth narrative with great comic elements, overlong though] 6. Avatar: The Way of Water [visually astounding, does the character study better too this time, too stretched in the runtime] 7. Top Gun: Maverick [perfect runtime, smooth narrative, brilliantly executed exciting moments but not necessarily a screenplay-driven film, not textual or literary, hence placing it here] 8. Elvis [Austin Butler, Austin Butler, Austin Butler and great design elements] Yet to watch The Fabelmans and Women Talking, so not ranking them yet!

I haven't seen Tar yet, but here's how I rank the other 9: 9. Avatar 8. Elvis 7. Top Gun 6. Triangle of Sadness 5. Women Talking 4. All Quiet on the Western Front 3. Fablemans 2. Banshees of Inishirin 1. EEAO I just don't get the massive love for Top Gun - I really enjoyed it, it was a fun action flick with some great fighting sequences. BUT pretty much zero character arcs, limp dialogue, bare bones story line, no real threat (no one can accomplish this! then everyone accomplishes it) and although it was a great action flick there are other action movies I've enjoyed as much or more.

I’ve seen 5 of these movies and here’s how I’d rank them. Also other than The Fabelmans and MAYBE All Quiet on the Western Front, I honestly don’t really have an interest in watching the other best picture noms. 5. The Banshees of Inesherin - 65% (Look, it’s well made and all but the story just never grabbed me) 4. Everything Everywhere All at Once - 89% (I do wanna rewatch this movie as I felt pretty overwhelmed while watching the movie but this is still great) 3. Elvis - 92% (Biopics can be hit or miss for me but this was absolutely one that worked for me) 2. Avatar: The Way of Water - 95% (Sure, the story isn’t all that great but the visuals are an absolute spectacle and the emotional moments really hit for me) 1. Top Gun: Maverick - 95% (So much better than it should’ve been and I hope this movie wins the Oscar)

I watched a lot of movies last year. Everything Everywhere All at Once was by far my favorite until I saw Babylon. I think it's the best movie of the year. Nothing has touched me the way Babylon did in years. The passion and love for filmmaking just oozes from the screen and that damn rattlesnake scene is one of the most chaotic things I've ever seen. @Wes Bradley-Taubner lmao “bitchslapped”. You might be taking the Oscar’s a bit too seriously lol. I still think EEAAO is an overrated movie, it’s basically a dumb action movie that has a lot of heart and great acting. Except for Best Picture, I loved most of the categories that they won in. All Quiet on the Western Front deserved the technical awards they got.
@123rockfan
@123rockfan Год назад
@Wes Bradley-Taubner “clearly it can’t be a dumb action movie if it’s winning awards”. “Oscars don’t decide how good a movie is.” That’s one BIG contradiction you got there….
@123rockfan
@123rockfan Год назад
I guess dumb is too strong of a word. But when it comes to it’s themes of existential nihilism, it’s really simplistic and paper thin. The movie easily could’ve been a simple drama about an Asian American girl coming out to her conservative mother. But they turned it into an action movie about the multiverse to appeal to people who don’t like pure dramas. That’s not a bad thing though. I just don’t think it deserves Best Picture. To be honest, I hated it on first viewing, but I rewatched it last night and I actually appreciated it way more

I haven’t seen Women Talking or The Fabelmans. Here is my ranking: 8. Avatar 2: I don’t care if it’s saving theaters. This movie is 100% style over substance. This movie actively irritated me. 7. Triangle of Sadness: Dolly De Leon was the only reason to watch this movie. So basically I enjoyed less than 1/3 of this movie. I personally find Ruben Ostlund to be extremely overrated. 6. All Quiet on the Western Front: On a technical and objective level, this movie 100% percent deserves a nomination. But on a personal level, this movie did NOTHING new. This movie has won best picture before. How many anti-war movies do we need? Apparently 1 ever 1-2 years. These are getting to be indistinguishable from each other. I’m over this genre. 5. Elvis: Like every Baz Luhrman movie, this is better the more you watch it. This had one of the best performances of the year and some of the best sequences of the year. 4. Top Gun Maverick: I didn’t really like this movie, but it deserves to be nominated, but I don’t want it to win. The fact this got a screenplay nomination irritates me. But other than that, the nomination is deserved and I hope more movies take risks like this. 3. Tár: Great acting. Great cinematography. Impeccable direction and editing. Fantastic script. Perfect nomination. 2. Banshees of Inisherin: *See notes on Tár, but this has more humor and Jenny.* 1. EEAAO: Originality, resourcefulness, talent, and passion are all on full display in this movie and I haven’t been so happy for a movie nomination since Mad Max Fury Road.

The Fabelmans-special because the plot is only half the story, with the other half being the character development implied by the character going on to make the film 3. All Quiet on the Western Front-brilliantly made, but I do feel like it kind of fails it’s message (war did not look as horrible and arbitrary as it needed to) 4. Women Talking-fantastic screenplay, but might as well have been an audio drama 5. Triangle of Sadness-interesting commentary in its concept, failure to deliver in its conclusion (that ending was such a cop out) 6. Avatar the Way of Water-simply fun and impressive 7. Elvis-cool editing and a great performance make it a fun watch 8. Top Gun Maverick-such a standard movie 9. Banshees of Inisherin-such a great concept that just goes nowhere 10. EEAAO-I hate this movie; it uses euphemisms to downplay the daughter being suicidal, then rushes to give the borderline emotionally abusive mother catharsis. I hate it. 1-4 are the ones I am cheering for.

I still feel like some peoples' criticism of Top Gun's picture nomination just because "its just a action block buster" is such an undermining take. Its one of the best made of its kind, it is not only critically acclaimed, it is the most loved by audiences and earned 1.4 billion (making it the most well rounded movie of 2022 in terms of reception). Top Gun most certainly deserves its spot, imo it deserves to be in the top 3 in best picture. Not every movie needs to be an immense character study, edgy noir, filled with extremely profound and nuanced messages. When a movie does exactly what it needs and wanted to do at an all time level, it deserves to be praised

The fact that movies like Babylon, Nope, Crimes of the future or even the overhated Men didn't get any recognition (except Babylon, it got a couple of nominations) is insane. But who cares, it's the same thing that gave Top gun Mmmmmaverick 6 nominations, maybe it's even good that those movies were snobbed

Everything Everywhere All at Once 7. The Fabelmans 8. Women Talking 9. Tar 10. Avatar: The Way of Water The last two are movies, I disliked. The others I liked or even loved. Banshees was actually my favorite of 2022.

I haven’t seen Triangle of Sadness and Women Talking yet but for the other 8… 8. Elvis (Austin Butler is great, but pretty by the numbers biopic with Baz Luhrmann’s style, and I don’t like Baz Luhrmann’s style 😂) 7. Avatar: The Way Of Water (I know I’m in the minority, but for me it was basically more of the same as the first one. Amazing visuals, so-so story & characters. All style with very little substance.) 6. Tár (Movie’s not my cup of tea and it’s way too long, but it is well made admittedly and Cate Blanchett as always is fantastic and probably will win Best Actress, even though she wouldn’t be my pick.) 5. The Fabelmans (Good movie, a little schmaltzy and I wasn’t a big fan of Michelle Williams’ performance, but still a solid film from Spielberg even though I don’t think it’s one of his best.) 4. All Quiet on the Western Front (Truly a terrifying, bleak, and brutal experience) 3. The Banshees of Inisherin (I get it’s not everybody’s cup of tea, it is very slow burn, but man Martin McDonaugh’s dialogue is once again amazing and Farrell & Gleason are fantastic.) 2. Top Gun: Maverick (Can’t believe I’ve seen some backlash towards the Film Twats on Twitter, but what do you expect, they do this for every popular movie. Talk about an impressive sequel, especially coming from someone who didn’t care about the first one. Also the fact that this didn’t get a Cinematography nomination baffles me.) 1. Everything Everywhere All at Once (What else is there to say about it? It’s fantastic, it’s weird in the best way, creative, phenomenal performances. I know it get too silly for some, but I adore this movie man. Also like Top Gun, I’ve seen people bash this too and say it’s overrated, which I shouldn’t surprise about.)

I’ve only seen four: 1) Everything Everywhere All At Once (Incredible, 10/10, loved it. PLEASE let this win Best Picture or at least a good number of major Oscars plus acting nods) 2) Top Gun Maverick (also really good, not something I’d usually go for but it really surprised me. High 9/10) 3) Banshees of Inisherin (solid but not the director’s best IMO. 8/10) 4) The Fabelmans (pretty good still, just nothing really exceptional to me and a little schmaltzy. Low 7/10)

I've only seen 4 of these. 4. Tar(Cate Blanchett was very good, but this felt like it was trying so hard to be nominated for several Oscars, with the way the story plays out. The credits being at the beginning made no sense to me and Tar's descent into madness didn't work for me or make sense) Everything else is awesome. 3. The Banshees of Inisherin 2. I know this is done, but comparing movies or trying to decide a best movie is a flawed concept. Top Gun is a fun movie, but is the writing all there? Or Avatar is a visual fest but if you look at just the writing only, would it have the box office it current has? Woman Talking might have some of the best acting and dialogue, but it will not be seen by many. There aren’t too many movies that are hitting all cylinders/all the beats. Everything Everywhere has a lot of them, but has stuff that would turn off older viewers.
