New character's backstories: "3000 pages of text explaining how they went through a psychological drama and torture" Old characters's backstories: "so uuum.. emmm... they sort of like dissapeared in the fog or something."
@@shifting3306 As if most of the male killers didn't also suffer some kind of traumatic or tragic or otherwise unpleasant event, like Wraith, Pinhead, Billy, Blight, Bubba or Trapper. Maybe you should read more lore, idiot.
Technically speaking Blight is not just a great lore character, so far he is THE lore character. Every Blight skin relates to him in the fact that he actively had to fight other killers to inject that, some of those he did while he was still only a surviving human, the others after he took his monstrous form. His lore is probably the greatest overall since it clued us into the fact that there are people across the universe (universes???), that are hunting for the Entity's realm. That and every last add-on he has tells a story related to killers. The umbra salts? He planted them on Spirit and fought to get them back. The rat and the blighted crow? Test subjects he experimented on. The adrenaline vial? Forcefully taken from Legion. I think Blight's going to get more and more lore overall. (That and it would be sick to see new killers with blighted skins)
On a side note, the Blighted skin for the Legion is absolutely terrifying. Not in general appearance, but in its backstory. If you don't know what I'm talking about read the items descriptions for each piece of Legion's Blighted skin.
I don't think with Huntress that she doesn't "know" that the children she takes need food. I think it's that Anna like a unsupervised child just gets caught up in whatever she's doing at the time. Forgetting to feed them till it's too late.
He forgot the part of the lore where it says "As she grew into a dangerous predator, her humanity became a half-remembered dream.". So ofc she didn't grow up on humanity, it was barely there
I really like the long in depth killer lores. People like to say for no reason that they’re pointless, but like, nobody asked you. It’s really interesting reading a long story detailing the killer’s descent into madness. It also helps immerse yourself while playing the killer. Understanding why they use their specific powers and maybe why they perform specific animations and actions while playing them. It’s something that doesn’t have to be there, but I’m really glad that it is.
I’d put Legion very high because it was based on an actual murder by 4 teens in Montana back in the early 90’s. The fact that Legion is the most “realistic” killers, with a real life based lore, pushes them towards the top for me. If Clown had a lore similar to Gacy, I’d do the same with him.
Opposite opinion here - I don't like when they're based on irl murders. "Inspired" is fine. You get enough realizm for it to be believable but aren't basing it on real events. I read this horror lore, and see the game as entertainment, I don't really want to think about real people brutally losing their life.
I absolutely love Trickster's lore because he's one of the only original characters in this slasher game who is an actual serial killer. Arguably, Ghostface does have the better slasher lore, but I loved the creativity of Ji-Woon using his victim's screams in his songs and the dichotomy between his lore and Yun-Jin's. It was a really cool approach to the slasher archetype and I'd honestly love more killers who are just irredeemably evil in the game.
@@SlaaneshM30 I love how not once did he mention the fact that Trickster being a Kpop artist is a reason he like the story. I agree with his overall assessment and I don't really like Kpop. The fact that Trickster is a completely irredeemable monster is a nice change of pace after a string of sympathetic killers.
Can't believe people are still salty over a K-pop themed killer lol I agree with you OP, as sceptical as I first was about whether trickster fits in with dbd or not I have to say his backstory grew on me. I also like how him and Yun-Jin have an actually intertwined backstory and relationship prior to entering the realm, which I don't think has really been done with original characters before (Correct me if I'm wrong)
the reason she was taken as a killer isn't that the entity stalk her her entire life causing all that tragedy with the intent of making her a killer? As with Trapper where he bribed him via his father and various events in his life, but to a much greater extent, which seems to make killers more powerful the more they are influenced by the entity the stronger they seem, at least in my opinion. for it is a good lore because it shows how the entity is ready to follow someone all their life, causing as much pain as possible so that when they enter the realm, they can take on the role of the killer.
Personally, I find the Legion's lore has such incredible potential and is what drew me in to DBD. I don't play the game but Legion as a concept really interests me
Legion as a concept is really interesting but their actual lore annoys me. Why would the Entity want them? They don't have a high kill count and are not really exceptional in any way. Their one and only direct kill was done partly unwillingly by some of them so it's not that they even have a love of being evil for its own sake.
@@DestinyKiller I have noticed the entity has tooken anyone who has a well aesthetic or look and also that could be why. just wanted mediocre killer cuz why not?
@@DestinyKiller if i had to guess, it probably sensed frank and julies love for killing and desire to become well known criminals and serial killers, and it snatched them up at the resort, along with jeff, and susie and joey got taken along too
Hey! Great video :) Blight is almost the perfect Killer, great gameplay and power, great lore, great chase music, scary and gross, great design, and honestly, after he defeat and inject his serum on Nemesis and Pyramid Head, he is the strongest killer in the lore of dbd nowadays
I feel that the Artist's lore needs to be fleshed out a little bit more. The crows just kinda went in and out of her life randomly, and they have no connection to her brother either. She might be heavily inspired by a real person though. Lorenza Bottner, an artist who also lost her arms.
I am 100% with you on Artist's lore being *way* too much. There's a certain point of bad things happening to a character where you overdraw on the audience's sympathy. How NOT to Write a Novel calls this Compassion Fatigue; TV Tropes terms it Darkness-Induced Audience Apathy. Plague's lore is probably my favorite, because it gives her an entirely understandable motivation for being a killer. Characters like Clown and Ghostface who are "just evil" are a dime a dozen. Characters like Plague... there are *layers* to why she kills. She's not only wholly devoted to the Entity in the religious sense, believing it to be the god who answered her prayers and saved her people, but she also comes from a culture where human sacrifice was *normal.* From her perspective, becoming a killer makes absolute sense.
*Are they* so common tho? I mean, I feel like nowadays there's no such thing as "simply" evil character. Every character has a complicated motivation or a horrifying trauma that pushed them into it. Clown has trauma but it only explains where his impulses come from, it doesn't become understandable why he's killing people. The only popular character I can name that is simply evil nowadays is Michael Myers and maybe The Joker (who still has a whole ass philosophy behind what he's doing). Some people are just sadistic and crave this particular way of control. It's pretty realistic to me, and you can still do a lot of entertaining things with a character that doesn't have a particular motivation.
I had this idea on ranking the killers on who would be the most painful to go against if you were there. So like who would bring you the most pain before you got hooked 3 times. But we also gotta remember that the survivors are buffed to because who can take a huge man with a chainsaw slashing it at you at least 3 times and still be able to run
I adore The Ghost Face’s lore, however, at risk of sounding basic, I honestly love Evan and Billy’s tome lore a lot. It just established so much for their characters. However, I know this is a base lore video so that doesn’t exactly apply here. 😅
My friend. To avoid flashlight saves simply look at a wall when picking up. When there is no wall you can bait out survivors by standing on top of the downed person and listen for footstepts. To be extra save simply make a quick spin when picking someone up in a direction that you think the saving survivor wont expect. Its hard to see these flashlight saves from hard worked downes.
Most of the stories fit the list fine. Here’s my take. Ghost face, in my opinion, should be in the fine character. His story is cool in all, but the lore in DBD makes me tired to read. A prankster who is a killer is cool and he is very creepy, but the lore where he meets the entity makes me sleepy. The Huntress should be on the great list. Huntress was a girl in pre WWI who was struggling to survive with her mother. When her mother died, she did not have someone to guide her, She didn’t have anyone to teach her how to be a mother. She killed soldiers/families as a hunter because she felt a need to protect her and her mother’s lands. Which in my opinion, shows how much she respected/loved her mother. She kidnapped kids, as that was her attempt to be a mother, but she failed to realize that they needed food everyday, or they would die. This makes her character more interesting, that’s because she had no want to teach her how to probably be a mother, her attempts of being a mother were futile. I do agree, that the twins and the spirit do deserve sympathy. The Spirit deserves it a little more than the twins. Charolette and Victor had to watch as their mother was beaten with a club and taken away by the black veil as children. The reason to why they kill, makes sense as they were hunted as kids just for being the way they were, And to make things worse, a judge, had stated their mother gave birth to the spawn of Satan (referring to Victor). Rin, The spirit, was killed by her father due to his grief and him blaming the mother and the brothers death on her. Rin, did not deserve to die, as grief is said to blind a man, and unfortunately, it blinded her father. A character who is killed by a loved one, is much more likely to gain sympathy then a character whose loved one was killed in front of them. These are just my opinions. For the most part, I agree with list.
Trickster's lore is just stunningly cool. He's a diva, yes. But there's a wonderful bit of obfuscation the lore does as to whether he killed his bandmates, or just declined to save them from the fire. Additionally, he and Yun-Jin have a very interesting dynamic, wherein she is both frustrated by him AND desperately trying to trust and protect him. This, in turn, leads Ji-Woon to resent her for stifling his 'freedom'. Their lore chapter was very clever, too! The way Ji-Woon nearly got caught, but managed to twist his own crime and frame himself as the victim. That is some brilliant, quick thinking for such a narcisstic little twat. Additionally, the little touches in his design are just great. When he is stunned by a palette, he has to take the time to fix his hair. He doesn't clean his bat, he twirls it in a little flourish. Being somewhat twinkish, he practically prances around the field, and even has difficulty lifting any survivor he knocks down.
Yeah, Carmina's was trying a wee bit too hard. It's not implausible, but man, it's just so much. Mom left, alcoholic dad hates her and blames her for it, she lets her brother die, tries to kill herself, cult member kidnaps her and her friends, cuts her hands off and cuts her tongue out, and she kills the cult guy and her friends with crows. It feels like they were just trying to be as, "She's a tortured artist with a dark past," as possible. Would've been better, in my opinion, if they had never mentioned the parents, had made the cult just attack her because they notice her whole crow deal, and had toned down the edginess of the cultist's monologue. That way, she would still attempt suicide after letting her brother die, explaining the crow thing, she'd come out of that, revealing herself to the cult and would then get her friends killed as the cult attempts to turn her into a killer like they did with Charlotte and Victor, allowing her to keep the whole self-induced scapegoat role. It wouldn't be perfect, but it would be a bit better. As all great writers know, "Less is more."
I think Spirit’s lore and Plague’s lore are the best ones I ever read. Also early congrats!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉U got to 100k subscribers!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉 Eat some Ramen noodles!!🍜🍜🍜🍜
Hey Azhy, great video as always! Will you ever make a speculative video about what the killers would say to their past selves, before they were taken by the entity? Like words of advice or warning they would give? Keep up the good work, man!
Oni has one of the best if not the best lore and backstory he killed anyone that dared to call him a Oni because he ultimately knew he was and eventually became the thing he hated
Would be neat if u ranked killers based on how much pain they feel just by existing, like myers and huntress dont feel anything, but blight and pinhead must feel so much pain just walking around
I personally find the artists lore empowering, i recently was in an accident that mangled my foot, and it was cool seeing bhvr release 2 latino characters like me, one who had suffered like me but came out stronger from it
I would personally recommend you not finding your strength through killing people and pledging yourself to a Dark God, but otherwise I see where you’re coming from 😝
So, when's the Survivor lore tier list coming out? If Dwight's story isn't number one, I'm rioting. Like, Yui, Elodie, Felix? As if their stories can compare to, "Dwight was an absolute nerd, he got a job, got wasted, and now he's running away from Killers." It's beautifully poetic!
Most pf the licensed characters’ lore is SO lazy, it’s sad. When Nemesis came out, I was kind of expecting to get an exact point of the plot where he and Jill were taken, instead of a vague answer.
There’s not really a point in them writing 500 paragraphs and original stories about a character that you can literally just play another game or read a game wiki to learn about
My God, he's right. Reading the Artist's lore was almost draining to me. It's like the creators were trying to force me to feel bad for the character. One bad thing after another. It's just...too much.
Just here to drop some appreciation. Love your videos and the thought/work that goes into each one. Keep up the good work! A day with a drop from you is a good day :)
I wonder if the entity was experimenting with the Legion and whether or not adolescent teens could have the drive to be a killer without breaking down and seeking help from others.
To be fair, you can still be a doctor without being a medical one (which is dumb to me but whatever). I agree though that we need more dialoguec especially with the Legion. I don’t care how close you are to someone, you are different in some ways. Different morals, beliefs, style, thought process, etc. Like okay, we know the main 2 Legion members are worse, but what about Joey and Susie? We know next to nothing about them. They are unironically just faceless masks. A skin, and nothing more. You could remove them and nothing would change. Which is a shame, because Susie and Joey have way cooler base costumes than Frank and Julie.
i’m not sure if you’ve done this, but could you do which perk is the best for each survivor / killer? so for meg, it’d be either adrenaline, quick and quiet or sprint burst, and so on
I'm not sure if I've even read Hag's Tome Lore. I don't have it all unlocked yet and I only read all of the first book. I've got the second book fully unlocked and I think maybe the third, and then five. I'll have to check all the Tomes later... . I think with Huntress she might be giving the children RAW meat. That's really the only explanation I can come up with because Anna really should know that animals need food and water. I get she's not traditionally educated but there's being ignorant and then there is being dumb, and you can't survive in the wilds by being dumb.
Imo opinion I would place hillbilly's backstory with leatherface, it's just fine and it talks about quiet sad story of a discormed child that was never wanted, which we can even see in real life. Anyways this is a great video, keep the hard work up 👍
I was gonna say a ranking for each of the killer's motives to kill in or out of the realm, but I'm not sure if that could be done for every killer. Also, love the video
BRUH. You put most of the licensed killer's on the lowest possible ranks for having the worst backstories even though they were left intentionally basic at best because they already come from alternative source materials that already explain their lore pretty well, The Game developers at BHVR most likely had to make them vague at best so people could go out to explore the original source games and/or movies on their own without the DBD lore pages spoiling too much (assuming they haven't already explored them). When the Halloween chapter came out I actually went out of my way to watch the first movie, and kudos for Nightmare on elm street, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Hellraiser, I even checked out a playthrough for the Resident Evil 3 remake, Silent Hill 2, and marathoned All of Stranger Things to check out the lore for myself. I'm sorry the developers didn't copy/paste all of the licensed killer's wikipedia pages on their lore descriptions.
your videos are so good I would be interested in hearing ur theories for upcoming chapters or details (for example, what do u think the Ringu is going to be like) who do you think should be added from movies or books? (I think Dracula would b so awesome)
honestly the artist is not even so impossible, the mother who goes away and the father who is an asshole are directly connected, and the brother who falls in the end is an accident that could happen And then from there on it is direct or indirect influence of the entity, so personally he finds his Role to be quite good, it would be nice to have more of a view of her personality.
I think for the demo they didn’t put the lore because they don’t wan to spoil anything I think that might be with every license except for GHOSTFACE because he is not the full licensed one
The lore for the older characters is straight to the point and leaves blanks for you to fill in as to why they are the way they are. Kinda like real serial killers that were never caught where you will never truly know. Wraiths lore is probably the best lore in the game for its setup of who he might be. Nurses lore is also one of the best. It’s not what’s unclear about the lore that makes it worse, it actually makes it way better. There is twenty pages of lore about characters like oni, artist, twins, spirit, etc where all the killers reasons, motives, weapons, and asses are described in so much detail where they might as well make a movie about all this shit. Oni fans lore is great, don’t get me wrong. But he isn’t a ghost of a mysterious rage or a warrior who burrows his feelings that aren’t useful. He is a cool samurai with a sword who’s pretending to be a killer, the only thing I know it leaves blanks on is the possession part which is the most thought provoking thought. Ghost faces lore is great because it’s original and while telling every inch of his pattern of killing, that adds to the story while still leaving you to fill blanks. Spirit has some good lore.
i just now realised that we have many killers from past like oni and plague but all surviorsn are from the present day pretty much. i got an idea for a chapter that has a psychotic killer and a survivor from the same era. their stroies dont interfere until the end where the survivor kills the killer in self defense with luck and thats when the killer is drafted and the survivor dies right after in some way.
It's really not the creators fault when the characters like Myers and Demogorgon are lisenced, so any lore that that they can contractually come up with is a list of things not-to-do, their hands tied up and a kick to the rear.
The Hag's lore needs more. I would have liked it better if the reason she became a Killer was magic related more so than random cannibals. That seems so far fetched and extra that a more simple black magic does bad things to you would have worked better
I think that the point of her story Is that the Entity just kinda of decided ti focus Fire on her, Maybe Because it wanted to create a faithful killer who would do anything for it, and maybe also because the more it follows a person for their life the stronger they become in the realm.
